Turkey Leftovers GAINZZZ

Repeats for the Thanksgiving break.

Last week I talked about the usefulness of the yoga nidra or "non-sleep deep rest protocol" for getting most of the benefits of a nap if you can't nap. Or this version, with a female voice.

I found out something interesting. I came across a video about fixing terminal insomnia -- insomnia of the waking up and not being able to fall back asleep kind, rather than the not being able to fall asleep in the first place kind.

That video recommended what she called the "A Robot Shutting Down" protocol.

Although I said that the yoga nidra was super-gay, this changed my mind -- Robert O'Neill, the guy who plugged bin Ladin, said that a protocol which is just a very minor variation of the yoga nidra is taught to SEALs for purposes of helping them sleep during stressful situations, like when they're being ferried on choppers to a mission.

It follows the basic "relax and shut down each muscle group one by one" script of yoga nidra before turning to a countdown.

I had thought the protocol was for a semi-nap, not to help you fall asleep, and it didn't really occur to me that it was something you could just do in your own head, rather than listening to someone else's voice taking you through a guided meditation.

I've been doing this now for a week days and my sleep is much, much better. I do it at the beginning of sleep and fall asleep quickly, and I do it when I wake up in the middle of night and also usually fall asleep pretty quickly.

Very recommended.

Two things: You probably have to listen to the guided style of the protocol so that you can recall the basic script easily. It's an easy script to remember the basics of, but I assume that if you're taxing your brain to recall it, that would interfere with relaxing your brain and keep you from sleeping instead of putting you to sleep.

The other thing is that I find it's been working less the past few days. Maybe I've gotten too bored with it and it no longer is in that perfect range of just interesting enough to keep my mind occupied with a boring task, but not too interesting to excite my brain. I'm finding it getting so boring my brain is wandering off, as it does when I try to count sheep. Maybe I just have to vary it up and try a slightly different protocol.

I'll tell you though, for five days, wow, one of the best hacks I've ever tried. It's worked all week, just not as great the past two nights.

Anyone else try this? I think LadyC tried it (nap form) and really liked it.

Last week I added in a restatement of how to do intermittent fasting or time restricted eating. I added that in after the post had been up for like forty minutes, so I'll put that below the fold if anyone's interested.

My GAINZZZ are weaksauce; I was chained to the computer because of the trial, though I finally got out for a hike yesterday. I shed a pound over the week. Sleep was good, thanks to the yoga nidra --or , as I'll now call it, the SEAL Sleep Hack.

What about yo' GAINZZZ? Any PLANZZZ? PROJEXXX?

Any BOOKZZZ you're reading?

Any PROGREZZZ on BOOKZZZ you're writing? Share with the group.

As you might know, my PLANZZZ is to take a week off, until next Tuesday, and WORKZZZ on my own BOOKZZZ. Maybe some SHELVZZZ stuff too.

Below, IF stuff.

If you want to try this, remember, you're already fasting when you're asleep, so there's 6-8 hours of fasting right there. Make sure you don't eat three hours before bed (it disturbs your sleep anyway) and put off eating or drinking calories (you can have black coffee or tea without milk) for at least an hour after waking up and you've got 10-12 hours of fasting as a starting point.

Then just end eating an hour earlier and put off eating an hour later every few days until you start eating at around noon or 1pm, and finish eating at 7pm or 8pm. That puts you on an 8 hour eating window, with a sixteen hour window of fasting, which is a 16:8 intermittent daily fast.

There is a period of adjustment and yes your body's clock will tell you you need food when it's accustomed to having food. You don't actually need food at that time; that's just the time your body has been conditioned to expect it, so that's the time it pulses out hunger hormones to spur you into eating. Your body will retrain to adapt to a new eating schedule in a couple of weeks. Not gonna lie, though, those hunger signal will be distracting at first, which is why it's best to just expand your fasting period by an hour maybe every three or four days (or two hours per week, one hour after three days, another hour after four).

(Actually I think it's probably better to just do it all in one go and gut your way through it but everyone says do it slowly so I'll just repeat what the namby-pamby "experts" say.)

I had been on an IF schedule for years and it was automatic and effortless to keep it. But when I went off it, and tried to get back on it, it was a bitch. And I had to go through the nagging hunger pangs again.

It takes an upfront payment in willpower and self-denial. Then the body resets its expectations of its feeding times, and the hunger goes away (or, rather, comes at the new schedule you've set).

Sixteen hours of fasting is recommended because the body begins burning small amounts of fat at 11 hours of fasting and then ramps up to burn a significant amount of fat at fourteen hours of fasting. So at sixteen hours of fasting, you're getting two solid hours of fat burning daily. If you can extend that to an 18 hour window or 20 hour window, that's better, but 16 hours is good.

I don't have much to say either. Most of my exercise these days comes from walking while delivering UberEats.

I did get a bit of a workout recently. I had to get up three flights of apartment building stairs with my grocery cart to deliver an order. (Thankfully it was in a good neighborhood.)

31 Thanks for the info about the robot shutdown thing, Ace. I will look at that because that's my problem right there, walking up and not being able to get back to sleep.

Now I have a tip for you, if you take melatonin. My daughter's friend is in med school and he told her that most melatonin you buy is too high a dose. He says you only need one mg, and too much can have the opposite effect of disrupting your sleep.

So I used a pill splitter to cut one of my 5 mg tabs in fourths, and for the last two nights I've slept 7 - 7.5 hours straight. Too soon to tell if it works for sure, but it's encouraging anyway.

44 Thanks for posting the info regarding possible solutions for insomnia, ace. Sadly, I wake up as early as 1:00AM some mornings and can never go back to sleep. I'm definitely going to look into this some more.

GAINZZZ wise, I'm having the hardest time getting rid of the weight I gained over the summer. These last 3-5 pounds just won't budge. Still sticking with 45 minutes of elliptical cardio three times a week, but I've slacked off on the Pilates part of my GAINZZZ regimen. I'll try cue up one of my favorite Pilates vids on utube this weekend.

BOOKZZZ wise, I'm about halfway through Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, which I halfheartedly read as a kid in the 80s, since everyone I hung out with thought it was awesome. My classical music playlist now has 3480 pieces by 1200 different composers. Spent some time today straightening some mistakes and tidying a bit before adding more.

The latest breathless discovery by the classical music world has been Florence Price (1887-1953), a twofer of 1) black and 2) a woman. The narrative is that she's an undiscovered genius unjustly suppressed by a white, male, racist, sexist establishment.

I recorded her 3rd Symphony, which is tonal, has nice episodes, but isn't particularly well put together. And far from being suppressed because of her race or sex, it's likely the reason she disappeared was that any tonal composer was slagged as hopelessly reactionary by the Modernists.

82 Got a call form Sacred Heart Church this morning about my rosaries, and they are interested. Wonder if finally getting a response has anything to do with me mentioning not getting a response earlier, so giving a bunch to the Presbyterian church for their bazaar? ::evil grin::

At any rate, I spoke to their business manager, who sounds very nice, and he's going to send someone over early next week, since I told him I get lost easily and don't like to drive because of it. We'll see how it goes from there.

BUT this will not interfere at all with me making rosaries for the Horde, so don't hesitate to ask if you want one! I'm retired and make them as a hobby and personal devotion, so it's no extra work, and I particularly enjoy making them for the Horde.

I regularly repeat on these threads:

When sun is below about 35 degrees (so most of fall and winter for most of US) the UVB is absorbed by the Ozone in the atmosphere so you get NO vitamin D from it (Thanks Ralph Nadar!)

In winter you really need supplements. Do not think that low hanging sun is giving you vitamin D.

143 In Anti-Gainzzzz news I walked around for a few hours wed and by the end my knee started to bother me, really hurt that night, was sore the next day and mostly okay today, in which i walked another few miles. But I'm guessing that will put a damper on my limited lower body exercises as it is. Thankfully the tendinitis or whatever i had in my arm for almost a year seems to be gone, even though that never hampered any upper body exercises.

Not Book Gainzzzzz, but I write screenplays. I have 2 complete and 3 more about half complete, reaching from action, to rom com, ti family movies. Decided to do another once over on one and am trying to trim in down to be 110 pages. That's always one of the hardest things for me, as most scripts shouldn't be much over 100 pages as not many movies are 2 hours long, but i tend to keep writing into that range. I'd love to be able to write something 15-20 pages (i do have a sitcom pilot at 30) since that might be easy to finance myself and film, which you really need to fo if you want to get others to finance the bigger stuff.

They are popular for the anxious (our son had one for cancer treatment) and the autistic. Something about the weight is soothing.

The downside is that they are pricey and I personally think the minky fabric some are made of is too hot.

I made my own small one from cotton fabric and plastic beads (not jewelry beads- the special stuffing kind) from the craft store. I don't use it every night, but I do think it helps me stay asleep.

162 I lost 30 pounds and have been able to remain at the new weight for years, using the S diet.
No Snacks, Sweets or Seconds except on days starting with S.
When I start feeling hungry about an hour before meal times. I am losing weight.
I don't have to change what I eat or do anything fancy. I have just learned to pay attention to the feedback from my body. If I am hungry too soon after eating. I should increase meal portions, if I want to loose weight I have to adjust portions until I have that good appetite an hour before mealtime.
As far as strength, I am pleased to have deadlifted 260 pounds a week after my 71st birthday.
I find it useful to think about a familiar story while trying to fall asleep. Again something that occupies a pleasantly idol mind.

188 Back in the 1970s biofeedback was a fad. I was fascinated by it and got my family doc to prescribe it (this was back when private docs could make their own decisions about things). One of the things they did was put electrodes on various parts of my face and trained me to relax my facial muscles prior to going to sleep. With biofeedback, you could do this not by focusing on the muscles, but on the sound the sensors made when the muscles fired.

In any case, it worked amazingly well. It turned out that the two keys were, of all things, relaxing the tongue (which, thank God, didn't have electrodes attached to it), and the muscles around the eyes.

I still do that 50 years later, and it still works.

i'm totes doing that, eyes and tongue. also I'm finding that when i concentrate on an area, i can feel the electrical energy in that area crackle. not sure if this is because i'm directing more electrical energy there or just more attention there, so i'm sensing it more.

this is what was making the process interesting enough to me to keep me engaged, which then helped me drift off to sleep. the past two nights i've failed to get this kind of feedback and so got bored with the technique and started thinking about other stuff.

Go outside. Spend at least a couple hours out there every day walking around or doing some sort of exercise or work, you don't have to kill yourself just keep moving. The more time you spend doing this the better and deeper you will sleep.

In the Navy, if the power went down, the first thing I had to do was run up and shutdown my radars, so an uncontrolled power up would not cause problems... in berthing, you'd know the power went off because the blowers for Air would quit... thus, silence was bad... and I had to go shut shit down.

To this day, I need to have some kind of fan going in my bedroom to sleep... so I use an air filter...

The effects of [3000 mg] of nicotinamide upon sleep in humans.

(Free PDF on Google Scholar.)

Took 3 weeks to work (on insomnia and increases in REM sleep, the latter as measured by QEEG).

Nicotinamide is an early precursor (among other precursors) that makes the FUNCTIONAL form of Vitamin B3 (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide, abbreviated as NAD+ or less frequently, NAD).

Taking too much Nicotinamide inhibits the formation of Sirtuin 1. That's bad. Source Naturals sells 25mg NAD+ SUBLINGUAL tablets, 60 for around $17 or $18 on Amazon under the name Coenzymated B3.

That's good because it goes directly into the bloodstream.
