Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | CDC Head Rachel Walensky: Hey, I've Got a Great Idea. Now That the Covid Pandemic Is Diminishing, Why Don't We Wear Masks Forever to Reduce Infection By the Flu and Even the Common Cold? Those of you who said "they're addicted to the pandemic" or "they will never let the pandemic end," collect your winnings. Spoiler alert: Your winnings consist of a box of drug store masks.[The ABC News tweet] linked to a story from contributor Jay Bhatt, a doctor and public-health professor, arguing that people should resist returning to normal after receiving their vaccine booster. But of the five reasons he lists for continued masking and social distancing, two of them are "it's flu season" and "other viruses are out there." One of the reasons why I have tried to avoid making the argument that we don't mask during flu season, so we should not be masking for COVID-19 given that vaccines are widely available, is precisely that I was always worried that at some point, somebody would respond, "Well, we should be masking during flu season!" It seems that moment has arrived. An analogy that just occurred to me: Viruses have what I'll call an unstable core. This term is not accurate but it works for the analogy. Their genetic code is not well-guarded against misreplication and error. They reproduce sloppily. They lose chunks of their genetic code in replication. They also just grab up any stray genetic code in their vicinity and incorporate it into their genetic core. That's what makes them so incredibly changeable -- so mutable. It's also the mechanism that allows them to suddenly become virulent and lethal. It occurs to me that many, many people today lack a stable core. They do not have much by way of a core of fundamental being inside of them. The old pillars that provided strength and solidity to people -- church and family being two of them, friends you actually know in the real world being another, engagement with thought longer and deeper than scrolling through twitter Hot Takes -- are largely absent from many people. The genetics of their psychology and personality are thus not well-guarded against mutation, and like a virus, they readily pick up pieces of Identity and stray strings of Meaning they find floating in the medium. They incorporate these new pieces of Identity and begin infecting others with it. Suddenly lost and lonely people are all Non-Binary Femme-Trending Anti-Racist Equity-Working Science-Believing Fat-Positivity Graysexuals who believe Black Lives Matter and that Hate Has No Home Here. And many people have incorporated an exciting, potent new string of personal meaning, the "People of Pandemic" string, into their identity code. Being a Person Who Is Very Very Concerned About the Pandemic is just as serious (or, just as trivial) a personal commitment and identity choice as being Non-Binary. It defines them. It determines who their kinship group are. It makes a tribe, it makes a culture. It cleaves them from one mass of humanity and connects them strongly with another mass. It determines what they believe about a great many other things. You automatically know what all Pandemic People think about CRT, for example -- it simultaneously doesn't exist and is critical to teach children. We live in viral times. People themselves have now become viral in most essential sense of the word. Having no fundamental spiritual DNA, they now mutate dozens of times a year, becoming more virulent with each mutation, and spread their diseased Codes to the other Viruses who look like people. This pandemic won't end. It can't end. If it were to end, the Viral People whose primary code is being a Person of Covid would themselves end.

This is the old saying that "When you get rid of religion, you don't believe in nothing, you start to believe in everything." Humans have a natural religious impulse that is hardwired into us and helps drives not just our belief in the supernatural but in the way we organize our societies and our day to day lives. The number of people actually addicted to the pandemic, the ones who will force it to continue out of some kind of proactive sense of meaning rather than an overinflated sense of fear because they believe propagandists, is small.
The problem is that instead of like what would happen in previous years and generations when they would be relegated to the fringes of society, ranting on street corners about the end of the world, they have control of the culture. ++++ And even that is hugely optimistic, since it depends on perfect behavior and sanitation habits. Nobody does that, because it is a monumental pain in the ass. No one has good mask habits, and without those good habits efficacy collapses. Even if she weren't outright lying, it is a very sunny interpretation of potential. Anna Puma's comment at #7 couldn't be more accurate. I spent about 7 years in northeast Asia in the 1990's and many of them wore masks to ward off getting sick. Masks do work if worn properly but there was no mandate there, just a cultural thing. As an American, I take offense to almost any mandate or new law the democrats propose or enact as well as most of those from Republicans. Masking is very much a midwit-friendly solution. Midwits are to smart enough to know about germs (they exist!), smart enough to know putting something between you and germs is usually better than not having something, but not smart enough to run the risk-reward calculation for societal-wide cloth masking.
To help out the midwits we probably need to make up nice sounding numbers that purport to assign a nice simple value reflecting the benefits of non-masking so they're simple minds can properly evaluate the benefits of non-masking. We just need people to start putting out papers/studies saying things like: "Masking reduces the societal benefice index by 75% and it will raise global temperatures by 4C by 2120." The drug store masks that almost everyone actually uses reduce transmission by 10-12%, tops.
___________ That's probably only true if an infected person coughs or sneezes right in your face, while standing directly in front of you. The cloth/paper masks gape open on the sides, so you get no protection from even big droplets there. And the masks only stop the large droplets, not the microscopic ones, so even if you're wearing a mask and some infected person coughs or sneezes directly at you, you're still not really protected. Then there's the fact that lots of people wear the masks on the bottom part of their faces, without covering their noses, which makes them even less likely to do any good. Use a Sharpie to write the most vulgar or insulting things on the front of your paper masks if forced to wear one. My current favorite is "People who make me wear this are RETARDS."
Here in Commiefornia, it is required to wear one in a medical office. I go in without one and make them provide it. Then I surreptitiously take my pocket knife and slice it open in front. If I go to a place of business and am told I need a mask, I turn and leave. On the way to the exit, I've been chased down by store owners or managers offering me a mask so that I am worthy to stay. I decline and make it clear that my business is going elsewhere. I rebel where I can. Posted by: Stu Podaso at November 09, 2021 12:32 PM (YDeRc) 172

The issue is one of politics and greed. On one part, there is the greed being pushed by the donor class. Every time there's a calamity, medical, insurance, and safety all get extra cash. Then there's the politics. The idiots in charge have no idea what the backlash of dropping the ruse will be. They don't know how people will respond and with the pressure from donors to keep going, they are having their decision making skewed. I really do think at this time we are watching the spineless government class fighting their own ineptitude and stupidity.

Ace - I'm sorry - but those masking effectiveness percentages are not even close to reality. Surgical, cloth masks do nothing. There is one study from Indonesia? maybe that suggest they have some efficacy. And strangely, discussion of it just disappeared. Nothing else reports any efficacy at all. Flu studies have been done forever - and no studies found any effect whatsoever. You can even find those flu studies on the CDC website if you look hard enough. And all mask producers say their masks don't stop viruses.
And to the N95 - one, it must be fitted. And two, the filtering must be appropriate. I am unaware of any long term control studies just evaluating N95 masks - but if their public usage effectiveness was much beyond 10% I would be shocked. Data - provided by individual state health departments -show no positive impact in mask usage in curtailing covid spread. In fact, there is a slight positive correlation between heavy mask usage and covid spread. But that's just correlation. We all know about that. For various reasons, I am having to deal with medical issues for two close relatives and thus multiple hospital visits, rehab hospital visits, etc. for the last several months. Now, this is simply one area that is in a nominally red state.
There IS a severe staffing problem from what I have observed in both hospitals, nursing homes, and rehab hospitals. It is particularly acute at the lowest level for custodians, various medical assistants, etc. But you also see some nursing shortages as well. The result is sub par care for your loved ones. If you have loved ones in medical facilities such as hospitals or nursing homes/rehab hospitals, you might want to check on them on a more regular basis. This is especially true if they cannot advocate for themselves due to medical conditions. Posted by: whig at November 09, 2021 12:38 PM (9hXN1) 219

Where is she getting that fantastical, farcical, medical misinformation claim that masks reduce the spread of covid by 80%? Even the N95 masks that actually work only reduce transmission by 60%. The drug store masks that almost everyone actually uses reduce transmission by 10-12%, tops.
Even granting that masks may reduce spread of virus by X%, how about the Anthony Fauci study of mask-wearing during 1918 flu which showed that more people died of bacterial infection than of the actual flu. Not to mention, how about the negative effects for breathing to anyone with any sort of conditions like asthma. Even granting there *might* be a benefit to wearing a mask, you also have to assess the risk/cost to wearing a mask and weigh that against the benefits. Especially considering we're talking about viruses/diseases (COVID, flu, common cold) which all have 99%+ recovery rates. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at November 09, 2021 12:41 PM (Do5/p) 246

A seldom mentioned negative effect of masks, is they interfere with normal human communication, in more ways than one.
1) speech is rendered muddled and less audible 2) wordless communication is completely killed, a simple smile communicates happiness, contentment, etc. A frown communicates the opposite. Both are negated under the mask. Posted by: gourmand is hungry at November 09, 2021 12:41 PM (jTmQV) 249

What Ace describes loosely follows the 'theory' of memetic transmission of ideas, thought patterns, worldview, which supposedly follows from Campbell's Rule that (roughly) states that the Darwinist drive for self-replication is universal at all levels of existence, to include ideas and belief systems. Dawkins touched on this in his 'The Selfish Gene' book and others have ran with it, with greater and lesser degrees of success since that field of study notoriously lacks the rigor to back up some of the bolder assertions. Dawkins has distanced himself from the whole 'meme' thing because of the pop culture craziness creeping in, but viral comparisons still work in argument.

There's a reason why memetic transmission of ideas fascinates me so. There's a fundamental, apparently hard wired into the brain, need to not only pattern match but to also grab an identity and find an in group so that you can then shun the out group. Evolutional biology is a helluva thing, to the extent we even have the most rudimentary idea about brain structure.

These people need to be introduced to business end of an industrial wood chipper. ___________ The prosecution's theory of the case (apparently) is that Gaige Grossface had the right to attack Kyle after Kyle shot Rosenbaum, because Grossface thought that Kyle was an "active shooter" and was trying to disarm Kyle for the safety of the others present on the street that night. (They're making the same argument about Huber, the guy trying to clock Kyle with the skateboard as Kyle lay on the ground. "Huber is a hero. He was trying to stop an active shooter!") Under Wisconsin law, Kyle loses the right to claim self-defense if there is evidence that he "provoked" the attacks on him. The prosecution is trying to show that Kyle's act of shooting Rosenbaum "provoked" the subsequent attacks on Kyle by Huber and Grossface. --- We have no mandates here, but the hospital allows only one visitor in the room and one visitor in the waiting room per patient. Everyone else has to stay outside. My aunt had a knee replacement a few weeks ago and I had planned to go because I thought I might be able to do something helpful. But then I realized that if I went, her closer relatives wouldn't be able to visit her. Sure enough, her son told me he had to go outside and wait in his car whenever someone came to visit. What? 70 years of research found no significant benefit in reducing transmission, outside properly fitted/worn N95s - IN A CLINICAL CONTEXT - and even that wasn't very impressive.
For flu? Been studied for years - that's obviously what the 7 decades of research was about - and thus there's no public health reason to wear or recommend masks. The CDC itself published a meta-study in May 2020 - how perfect was this, right as their "guidance" was doing a 180 - that summarized the lack of value in masks. NONE of the "interventions" since March 2020 - masks, distancing, lockdowns/quarantines, contact tracing (tho that was comically and quickly abandoned in most places) - have had any impact, other than social and economic. This is what all history on the subject prior to C19 showed us, what all actual RCTs have shown us in the past, and what current gross data indicates, and which actual studies will surely confirm in detail. But...we also know half the hospitalizations for COVID were people in the hospital for OTHER things that had a positive COVID test. So...let's presume that is true of deaths as well...which gets us to 175k deaths from COVID. But...we also know they government claims the flu wasn't around last year...preciously because the PCR test can't tell between it and COVID. How many flu deaths are their normally in a year? 30-80K. If we assume that is the same for last year we get... Posted by: Just ignore the zero flu stuff, they didn't test for it at November 09, 2021 12:55 PM (x+caK) ++++ Okay. Let's assume it is 175 per million doses. The full vaccine course is two doses (non-J&J), so each "fully vaccinated" person has had two doses. The rate is 175 per million, or 350 per two million, or 17.5 per 100,000 population, or 0.018%, not controlled for age and before any boosters. The vaccine cardiac side-effect rate is worse than the mortality rate of the disease for the entire population, and concentrated in the young who have dramatically lower risk. Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at November 09, 2021 12:43 PM (ynpvh)" Actually this is inaccurate. Covid is passed primarily via aerosol transmission. Not droplets. This tracks well with actual spread data showing heavily masked locales actually had higher rates of covid spread than lightly masked populations. Posted by: Black JEM at November 09, 2021 12:49 PM (V6xwG) Yes, you're right, aerosolized spray, but that's still much bigger than the virii it contains, which are bigger than aromatics (which was the point I was trying to make; aromatics in farts can pass through filters that can catch virii because the virii are bigger). == probably not exactly - mortality is worse than a transitory heart inflammation that goes away. Now the rate of each is probably what you mean. they are estimating 175-200 cases of heart inflammation per million shots. Not nothing. Its is probably not more concentrated in the young. Its is probably in everyone. However it is easier to pick up in the data in the young because they have no background disease to offer a confounding alternative explanation. If you are 50 and got the shot, you had as much a chance of getting inflammation - its just easier to attribute that event to underlying cardiac disease due to your age. I can only offer my own limited anecdotal perspective on this, it's a hard no from me, and here's why. My kids go to our local Parochial Catholic School in NJ. They were out of school during the spring of 2020 same as everyone else. We had the good fortune of being able to reopen and stay open the entire 2020/2021 school year albeit with masks. We had a few hiccups here and there, and it was a weird school year especially for our kindergartener, but we were beyond blessed to have returned to a quasi normal. I remember specifically saying to my wife the first day of school... well, maybe with the masks we wont have to deal with the usual beginning of the year kindergarten crud/colds that the kids seem to get each September, with masks, sometimes face shields, and bathing in hand sanitizer what can go wrong? Like clockwork, all three of our girls were felled within 2 weeks of the return to school and they gave it to our son. No covid or flu, just regular colds. Back to school this year, still in masks, same damn thing, and we just had another round last week, with the added bonus of now needing to get covid tests to go back after illness. Still negative, just colds.

403 So if you're attacked and shoot the bastard in self-defense, you should be assaulted by the bastard's friends because they were "provoked".
____________ No, that's not what the prosecution's argument is. They aren't admitting that Huber and Grossface attacked Kyle in retaliation for Kyle shooting Rosenbaum, their fellow commie buddy. What the prosecution is saying is that Huber and Grossface heard the shots from the Rosenbaum shooting, and then mistakenly believed that Kyle was "an active shooter" who posed a threat to everybody in the area. So then Huber and Grossface heroically run at Kyle to try and disarm him -- in a misguided attempt to save everybody else from the "active shooter." - mortality is worse than a transitory heart inflammation that goes away. Now the rate of each is probably what you mean. they are estimating 175-200 cases of heart inflammation per million shots. Not nothing. Its is probably not more concentrated in the young. Its is probably in everyone. However it is easier to pick up in the data in the young because they have no background disease to offer a confounding alternative explanation. ...
Posted by: not a bullseye but on paper at November 09, 2021 01:05 PM (56gM4) ++++ Yup, definitely. This is much more of a consideration for the young, and the whole "known risk" versus "unknown risk" equation changes with age, sometimes dramatically. But young people don't usually get heart inflammation and they also don't usually get COVID (kids, anyway) and when they do get it, it is only very rarely severe. Those are lots of unknown risks, but if you get the shot then you are accepting known risks, immediately, every time. I think most young people (under 30, at least) probably *shouldn't* get the shot. If you're older, do your risk assessment. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at November 09, 2021 01:10 PM (DU+/6) 451

When the word "meme" first appeared, that was the analogy used - a "meme" was an "information gene", that was spread from person to person. Soundbites, but with more bite as it were. Now memes are images, typically humorous, but subsuming the role of political cartoons, and spreading more dynamically because of social media. And of course the term "viral" applies to videos. So, yeah. That is what they have always been. The process has simply "mutated", accelerating its cycle as it has been identified, studied, and ultimately weaponized as a method of social engineering. Just be careful of projecting too much functional change within the subjects (people/us), as that is the path to Lysenkoism. Posted by: Sam at November 09, 2021 01:15 PM (ohyxL) 488

Having no fundamental spiritual DNA, they now mutate dozens of times a year, becoming more virulent with each mutation, and spread their diseased Codes to the other Viruses who look like people.
Our culture has no skeleton. The left ripped the bones out of our society and replaced it with jello. They have a religion and a moral code but its not only horribly wrong, but changes constantly. You cannot build a society around an ever-shifting, constantly-changing, "mutating" system of ethics. Nobody knows what is right or wrong from literally day to day in this system. There's nothing to get purchase on to actually build around. This will without possible variation, inevitably collapse. And when it collapses, then the rebuilding can take place. The only possible thing that can prevent this collapse, which we are watching in real time is the intervention of an outside force. Some tremendous catastrophe, an invasion, or the sovereign act of God. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at November 09, 2021 01:19 PM (KZzsI) 508

We've talked about changing attitudes about self-defense and intervening to help others. Reasonableness plays a big role in self-defense claims; so, if the jury is made up of people who've been conditioned not to defend themselves or others, or view violence as unreasonable per se (by, say, zero-tolerance school policies), the defendant is screwed. And there's a lot of those people out there, especially in cities. It's why it's a fool's errand to help others in blue/purple enclaves.

Almost nobody in my area of Ohio are wearing masks. It's maybe 5% at most.
-- Only places people wear them are at doctors office or in church. Also at work because required in hallways. Occasional people are seen with them on in public. Maybe they are high risk or fragile in some other way. In general, most people not wearing. I think that 95% is right. t would seem to me that someone being "provoked" into threatening my life would be all the more justification that my offing them *was* self-defense.
That other person WANTS to kill me. Provocation is ridiculous. Grossface is either in control of his own actions or he isn't. "I was provoked" is grade-school playground bullshit. ______________ Yeah, this is about Wisconsin's self defense law, which is a bit weird. Andrew Branca over at Legal Insurrection has been providing the analysis of their law, if you want to read more about it. Historically, most jurisdictions have made some kind of exception for self-defense claims in circumstances where the person claiming self defense deliberately provoked the victim into the first blow. For example, if you call some guy's wife or mother a filthy diseased whore because you're trying to goad him into taking a swing at you so that you can then flatten him, you don't usually get to claim "hey, I was just defending myself. He hit me first." But the argument that Rittenhouse "provoked" the attacks on him by Huber and Grossface is a long way from that kind of situation. Frank DeHaas, in his bolt action rifle book, has the barrel specs of the bolt action rifles in his book including threads at the back which is an excellent reference on barrels for bolt action rifles. Posted by: whig at November 09, 2021 01:27 PM (9hXN1) 527
But its still terrible. That's patently and obviously not what happened, as the video plainly shows.
Andrew Branca covered the whole "provocation" issue at length at Legal Insurrection. Basically, "provocation" has to be supported by actual facts, not just what someone thinks. 412 Xipe, glad that you have a tight Krag--they especially like long heavy lead bullets about 220 gr. That also should lighten pressures. If you don't cast bullets, there are several sources online that do including the Lyman mould 220 gr. bullet for the Krag or Springfield 03.
Try Grafs and Sons for brass and even loaded ammo if you need it. Also the Krag Collector's Forum is another place to scrounge. You can convert British .303 brass but that is a pain. I remember back in the Before Times when every flu season someone would wonder if we should wear masks like they did in Japan, and the Smart People assured us that it was not effective.
Posted by: sock_rat_eez (ahosz) at November 09, 2021 12:13 PM Anthony Fauci himself stated in February 2020 that masks do not work to prevent the spread of viruses and specifically stated that about SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19. Within a month, he completely flip-flopped. Within 6 months after that, he was recommending double-masking. Fauci even published a paper a few years ago of his study of mask-wearing during the 1918 flu, where he found that more people died of bacterial pneumonia - presumably from buildup of bacteria on masks and spreading that way - than died of actual flu. These evil assholes have been lying to us from the beginning. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at November 09, 2021 01:39 PM (Do5/p) 537

Xipe,
Nice. Glad that someone is still making firearms from scratch. I don't hunt so my restoration of old military rifles including from bare receivers was a hobby that I pursued while laid up for about 10 years or so. Too expensive to do that now. Got back to the early black powder Mausers, Trapdoors, and some other foreign rifles before calling it quits. To do so safely required doing quite a bit of research including old archival materials and spending a lot of time on Gunboards, etc. Had everything doublechecked with a family of gunsmiths familiar with old war rifles just for peace of mind. Most of that is plea agreements. The Gov't loads up a case with all the possible charges, leading to ridiculously long prison terms if you are convicted of them all, the offers the defendant an "out" by pleading guilty and seving a much shorter sentence.
No, that 90% conviction rate is for cases that actually go to trial. Next time you get a traffic ticket for something you didn't do, fight it in court without a lawyer, so that you will be truly exposed 100% to the "justice system" without the filter of a lawyer. Before the case, when the prosecutor is trying to get you to plead guilty, tell him "There is something wrong here." You will learn all about the reality of the legal system. By the way when I did that, I got an objection sustained by the judge against the prosecutor, who turned purple with embarrassment when it happened. The judge was delighted to sustain it. After the trial the bailiff came up to me and said "Wow. You got an objection sustained. Good job." I still lost, but I really learned a lot about the legal system.
