Saturday Overnight Open Thread (11/6/21) Fall Back Edition

The Saturday Night Joke

A woman tries getting on a bus, but realizes her skirt is too tight. As the bus stopped and it was her turn to get on, she became aware that her skirt was too tight to allow her leg to come up to the height of the first step of the bus. Slightly embarrassed and with a quick smile to the driver, she reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little, thinking that this would give her enough slack to raise her leg. She tried to take the step, but only to discover that she couldn't.
With a little smile to the driver, she again reached behind to unzip a little more and again was unable to take the step.
After becoming quite frustrated and embarrassed, she once again attempted to unzip her skirt more in order to allow more leg room to get on the first step of the bus.
About this time, a large Texan who was standing behind her picked her up easily by the waist and placed her gently on the step of the bus,
She went ballistic and turned to the would-be Samaritan and yelled "How dare you touch my body! I don't even know who you are!"
The Texan smiled and drawled "Well ma'am, normally I would agree with you but after you unzipped my fly three times I kinda figured we were friends. - (H/T Iris)

So if the Fabulous Mrs. Mis. Hum. asks to go on a foreign vacation, the response is. No! Hell no!

A Dutch man had to undergo reconstructive surgery on his penis after a cobra bit his manhood during a safari trip in South Africa — causing it to rot.

The 47-year-old victim suffered scrotal necrosis after the cold-blooded serpent, which was lurking in the toilet bowl, attacked, according to Urology Case Reports.

In what the medical journal described as the first case of “snouted cobra envenomation of the genitals,” the unidentified man had to wait three hours before he was flown by helicopter to the nearest trauma center some 220 miles away.

I try to keep politics out of The ONT on Saturdays.......Too good to pass up tonight.

No mental health issues here. Nope. None whatsoever.

I breastfeed my boys aged 5 and 6 in the playground – I won’t stop until they’re ready
This mom still breastfeeds her two boys – aged five and six – before and after school and says she won’t stop until they decide it’s time on their own.

Sheryl Wynne, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England insists that breastfeeding her school-age sons is completely normal as it has cemented a lifelong bond between them and made them “closer”.

The 39-year-old nurses both Riley, six, and Mylo, five, before school, in the evening and throughout the night.

Sheryl claims ‘mommy milk’ is the ‘ultimate parenting tool’ as it helps calm the children and comforts them when they’re upset or ill.

I never had this problem. Why humans are growing taller.

Over centuries, humans have been growing taller.

Now scientists think they have the answer as to why, and the phenomenon is explained by a sensor in the brain.

The discovery made by UK scientists could inform the development of new drugs to help delayed growth in humans and boost muscle mass.

Throughout history, as nutritional health has improved, so have people’s growing potential.

Now about being horizontally challenged........

So modern feminists who have distorted their concept of womanhood find fulfillment in it.
Of course the Pete Buttigiegs and Dr Levines of the Left are gonna mess with that too, eventually

It's refreshing to hear this kind of music again, performed live, after these past 18 months.  Catch the live broadcast on that page, starting at 9:30 AM Mountain Time. Then the video will be available on that same page after the broadcast.

Those of you whom I got to meet at the TxMoMe might enjoy this rendering of God Bless America. Pause the video at 1:27 for a spectacular view:

The acts of days past are lost to time. They are known to you, but unalterable, try as you will to change them.
The future that lies before you is unknown and might exist only for a few fleeting minutes, or continue for decades.
The only instant of time over which you have control is now, so endeavor to live your life today, so that tomorrow you will forever be proud of your actions of yesterday!

metaphysical thought for the night - in a strict mechanistic, physical understanding of the universe, that is true. Existence is the persistent presence of the "now" with no regard for future or past.

but why have their existed some people who have glimpsed pieces of the future? I don't mean extrapolated from current events, or made educated guesses. I mean people who have seen events far in advance that they could not possibly have even guessed at.

the implication is that a strict physical explanation of existence does not go far enough.

Sure enough, two marks, maybe an inch apart right on the buttocks. Well, someone manned up, and did the "suck the poison from the wound" thing. Meanwhile, some people decided a snake in the outhouse wasn't a great idea, so, decided to do something about it. The went out, shined a flashlight in the hole, and, there was chicken, beak about an inch open, fiercly protecting her nest.

Every year, my son's school would send out a survey. Every year, I'd put on it that it was ridiculous for the school to start at 7:30 AM, with his bus pick-up at 7:00 AM, especially since we're told the kids need 10-11 hours of sleep. I always suggested later starts (when I was in grade school, we started at 9:00). Nothing ever came of it.

177 I once read a book about the old time big game hunters in Africa. Someone saw a black mamba hanging out in the latrine, raised the alarm, and everyone came running out with whatever firearms were handy. By then the mamba had taken off.
Apparently, the only thing worse than seeing a mamba in the toilet is NOT seeing it. Everyone was too scared to use the facilities at that point.

188 There definitely is a "time" in that space interacts with it in the presence of mass. That's the main reason we're not all floating off and dispersing. Time tends to express itself locally in the coalescing of matter.

On a spiritual level I think of time as a perceivable aspect of the will of God. Indomitable, unstoppable, ever present, but also as the foundation of our free will it empowers our volition. Our choices are instantiated, made manifest by and in time. And the direction of time is towards god.

219 Fake snake bites:

My fake snake bite happened to me while running around in the tall grass fields near my grandma's house late August. This is the time of year rattlesnakes shed their skin often blinding them. So they strike without the customary rattling noise.

I hit something and go down scratching my leg. The blood is coming out pretty good so I run to the house seeking medical attention. As my mom is wiping the blood away she sees two fang marks and lets out a profanity and tells grandma to call for the doctor (this is a small town in the '60s).

Finally getting the blood stopped mom was able to see the bite marks. They turned out to be two moles spaced like a snake bite.

State Farm has been proven to be woke since they flipped the script on Jake. Actually that's why they used Aaron Rodgers. He was woke before his most recent cancellation.

272 Compare and contrast: Same weekend, different events.

400,000 bikers in and around Galveston, TX for the Lone Star Rally, now the 2nd largest in the U.S., after Sturgis. Pretty calm, pretty chill. vs. 50,000 partiers in Houston at a rap concert on the grounds of what once was Astroworld, across Loop 610 from the Astrodome and NRG Stadium. EIGHT DEAD, over 300 injured. Some trampled, some crushed to death while standing, asphyxiated by the pressure from the crowds.

One group mostly above 30 years, hell, mostly above 50. The other? Teens, twenties, some thirties. Think there's socio-political trends in there, also? It is indeed tragic that eight died. But video from throughout the event shows the crowds stampeding security gates, trashing metal detectors, and etc. The "doom" was in the cards, and the hand was just waiting to be dealt.

HOF Kurt is one of the few pro football players I give a rat's ass about. He was literally bagging groceries as he tried to latch on with the arena league or developmental league where the chances of success are miniscule. But his faith in God kept him going until he took two loser teams to the Super Bowl, setting passing yardage records in all three of them until Tom Brady broke them. It's a storybook tale that the Goodell Football League typically undersold.

I hope they do a good job on the movie. He and his family deserve it.

One of the early settlers planted a lot of them here in Oregon, near Rickreall (not that means anything to anyone outside of Polk County) as a hedge for his horse pastures. He got a claim in the bottom land and raised horses and was quite successful because everyone needed horses that didn't want to move goods or plow with an ox.

So if it's an emergency necessary to save lives, how can you justify waiting two months to start it? Must not really be much of an emergency - which means you just admitted you have no legal justification to do it.

The goal of course isn't to actually have the rule stand. That's just a nice side benefit. The goal has already been partially accomplished. Announce that osha is going to do it. Scare people and companies into getting the shot or telling their employees to do it. Now announce the rule is ready and takes effect in January again terrorizes more people and companies to force it. 470 Sharkman -- how was the drive? Are you sick of ABBA yet??

Posted by: Doof

The drive was fine. The new ABBA album is good, but doesn't have the energy of their classic hits. Sounds more like their later stuff, and perhaps a bit too "wordy" in trying to tell complicated relationship stories. Agnetha and Anni-Frid still have beautiful, magnificent voices that harmonize perfectly.

I listened to Voyage (the new one) first, then put ABBA Gold on to compare. Their hits all had that . . . gasp! . . . disco beat, and the cute English as a second language simplicity that made them so catchy and memorable.

I'll never be sick of ABBA. Those two ladies were 12 year old Sharkman's first crushes, and hearing them sing still raises the hair on my arms and back of my neck. Reminds me of when I was young and had the whole world in front of me.

And I finished the drive listening to Megaherz' Kopfschuss album. To balance the electromagnetic forces of the universe

498 ..Never tell me about the glass dish that's coated in evil, they didn't said. Five hours of scrubbing the oven, they didn't said. Posted by: weft cut-loop at November 07, 2021 12:06 AM (1t5dY)

Glass dish, if it'll fit in sink, leave soak overnight in the hottest water you can deliver to a sink-full. Even if you have to toss in some boiling water from the typical 1.7l tea-kettle pot. HEAVILY soaped down with Dawn, dissolved into suspension and not just lurking in blue puddles at the bottom of the sink. Nylon scrubbie next day, and that dish'll clean right up.

Stove is similar. Spray with traditional oven cleaner. Wipe film of straight up Dawn on everything. Let sit overnight, and let time do the five hours of scrubbing. Nylon scrubbie after, and things'll be better. Much better. And never, ever run the self-cleaning function with the racks in the oven. Shiny chrome becomes dulled grey sadness, and can't be renewed.

499 Oops.

Excellent analysis, qdpsteve.

ABBA had a very simple formula that generated almost all their hits. Their last album in the early 80s went away from that formula a bit as did Voyage.

Still, beautiful voices perfectly harmonized never gets old. And of course, can you name another band with 39 years between records? There is just the one.

I looked and thought...no way sister. I brought a small bottle of B & B back to our room to supplement my beer. It has worked just fine and I'm sure Jerry would appreciate my consumption rather than it going down the drain.

513 R & T's COTY's failing, is that it focused on great, new, groundbreaking innovations and design concepts. Not on execution.

Chrysler's K car was such an innovation, for an American car company. And we all know how that in this case, "execution" was more along the lines of being stood up against the wall with a final cigarette.

Car & Driver's "10 Best", seems to take a more long term view of how well the design holds up over time and delivers. Or not. And let's not even discuss "Consumer Reports", who evaluates vehicles as if they were washing machine appliances with four wheels. (and the Maytag Washout was a failure from the start, having no traction on the spin cycle skidpad, at all.)

520 Been watching the Rekieta streams on the Rittenhouse trial. Beyond admiring the kids ability to perform under pressure, his ethics in turning himself into the police (maybe not smart, but for a good kid, the right thing to do) and the fact that he is having to endure this show trial, it is remarkable because I think we have done him a disservice. We have played up his ability to shoot these guys in the blink of an eye and show remarkable restraint and precision and not hitting any innocent bystanders. At the same time, he was out in Kenosha that night and the video they have has him constantly yelling asking if anyone needs medical attention (and giving it when it was needed.) He has evidently been dealing with the enormity of taking two lives and had a lot of sleepless nights.

A good man, I think. We sometimes turn these people into marble memes and lose sight of them being people.

537 GM trucks with Dynamic Fuel Management technology have 17 different cylinder patterns for turning off cylinders, which uses the engine's 16 hydraulic valves to open and close cylinders by restricting oil pressure to them when needed.

With the multitude of different cylinder combinations changing so rapidly, the system checks for changes 80 times every second, and there is no way to determine which mode or how many cylinders are actually working as a simple icon on the gauge cluster.

Classic example of stupid government \fascism at work. What does this bring, 2 MPG? How much extra does this make the engine cost? And what's the point of desperately trying to save a couple miles per gallon on a vehicle that costs North of 50k? If you have 50k you shouldn't be worried about 2 MPG. What it is, is that the tech costs yay much and the price plus profit gets added on and the manufacturer can say "nothing we can do, the Feds made us do it" Kind of like an option package you wouldn't spring for that you have no choice but to buy. If the manufacture of a car to 2000 standards was allowed, and priced according to production cost, it would rapidly become the top seller.

And any fuel savings will be completely blown away the first time that magic system gets a hiccup and needs service. Let's do a little math. Assume the cylinder shutdown feature saves you 2 mpg under all conditions. With it, your truck gets 30 mpg; without, 28. First two years, you drive it 60,000 miles. That's 2000 gallons of gasoline at (currently) $3.50 per gallon, or $7000 dollars. Without it, that's 2143 gallons, or about $7500 dollars...

574 ...so the Magic Widget saves you $500 in two years. If the magic widget goes haywire, and it's out of warranty, it's going to cost you about ten times that much to re and re the cylinder heads, and repalce the failed parts.

What I can see happening, is owners trading in the trucks a year before the warranty expires, and taking a bath on the resale value, because few used-truck buyers will want to spend top dollar for a truck due to go out of warranty in a year, with complex, trouble-prone systems.

Maybe the Magic Widget will prove to be stone-cold reliable, but GM's past history with variable cylinders does not prove that out.

Kate McMillan, proprietor of Small Dead Animals. I wonder if Hadrain has met her? She is on the show dog circuit, too. Schnauzers.

580 AOP. The Ford/International 7.3 Diesel was nearly bombproof. As was the Dodge/Cummins 5.9 mechanically injected, non computerized pre-emissions wonder.

GM's last truly reliable Diesel was the 6.2 in the mid to late '80s, and everything depending on electronics since, was subject to GM's suboptimal electronics output from them and until now.

Diesels benefit from a lack of electronics. Even Mercedes "Bluetech" engines are Garage Queens, and I have direct knowledge of this.

I had both 6.2 and 6.5 turbodiesel from GM. The latter had more power, but used more fuel, and the electronically-controlled injection pump was troublesome. I still have both vehicles. Should mount the turbo off the 6.5 on the 6.2; there was an aftermarket kit to do that, back when the 6.2's were current.

587 AOP. I owned a 6.2 Diesel C-1500. Twin saddle tanks, single cab, long bed. Half ton bitch, with wee GM 7.5 in. diff out back.

Very much a 25mpg truck, with Guidon hi-top camper shell and lightly loaded. Wasn't a stump-puller from the low end. And you had to haul ass on the downhills in order to not drag ass on the uphills. But I sold that truck with 285k miles on the clock, and nothing more than a low pressure fuel pump to show for the "big work" to be done.

Rust was it's nemesis. Not the powerplant nor the drivetrain.
