When In The Course Of Human Events It Becomes Necessary For One People To Have An ONT

Howdy Morons! It was nice to see a bunch of y'all at the TxMoMe last week. Special thanks to host Ben Had and all of the other organizers. I spent some time talking to CBD, he was especially enthusiastic about a method of cooking called sous-vide. He told me that meat is sealed in plastic bags and the food is cooked in a bath of hot water over a long period of time. He said it was how they cooked food at gourmet restaurants. I couldn't wait to get home and try it for myself.

Sous vide .jpg

I dunno. I was expecting it to be better.

Kyle Rittenhouse

I saw this today. I'm not sure if it's from the defense or what, but it does a really good job of demonstrating how this entire prosecution is a politically motivated joke.

I saw some Antifa-type on Twitter claiming that if Kyle is acquitted, they were going to “riot in cities in all 50 states”. Um, if Rittenhouse is acquitted, there will be legal precedent to shoot violent rioters.

Visit Oz

A new commercial encouraging tourism to Australia just dropped.

Australia was always a place that I wanted to visit. I don't think I want to go there anymore. I'm not even sure I'd want to go if everything returns to “normal”.

Well, This Ought To Fix Things

Billionaires back new media firm to combat disinformation

A new public benefit corporation backed by billionaires Reid Hoffman, George Soros, and others is launching Tuesday to fund new media companies and efforts that tackle disinformation.

Why it matters: Good Information Inc. aims to fund and scale businesses that cut through echo chambers with fact-based information. As part of its mission, it plans to invest in local news companies.

Yeah, that sounds like a great idea. How long until “Good Information” is the go-to “neutral” source for “fact” checking in the media?

Although backed and launched by progressives, McGowan says the group could make investments in entities across the political spectrum so long as their editorial standards support fact-based information.

She points to The Bulwark, a center-right news site founded in opposition to Trumpism, as an example of the type of center-right news outlet it could fund.

Oh, yeah, the MSM is going to love these assholes.

Tut, Tut, Looks Like Rain

Wrong Again: 50 Years of Failed Eco-pocalyptic Predictions

It still amazes me that we as a race have somehow allowed ourselves to be brainwashed into believing that A) the biggest problem we face is the weather, and B) that we could actually do anything about it if it was. Boggles my mind, really. I mean, I get it. I heard the dire warnings growing up (back then it was global cooling and the “coming ice-age” ). As I came of age I suppose I believed by default, but as I started paying attention, I noticed that the goalposts were always moving. I noticed that any study that disagreed with the orthodoxy was dismissed, not disproved (by then it was “global warming” ), and as it morphed into “climate change” it stopped even pretending to be anything other than a religion for rich white liberals. Now? Now it's nothing less than the best illustration of my favorite H.L. Mencken quote:

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Indeed.

If You Look, They Will Show You Who They Are

Here's a couple of screenshots from an interview with former representative from Tennessee, Democrat Harold Ford Jr. The meme captions tell the tale, really. He's got a painting of Mao on one wall, and a pedo painting by artist Kim Noble. (Lets be fair. Noble is a truly disturbed individual. She suffers from multiple personality disorder, and many of her personalities paint. When she paints as Ria Pratt, the paintings have themes of sexuality, abuse and pedophilia. You can see her work here). I have no doubt that Noble was severely abused as a child, which is the source of her disorder and the Pratt paintings. However, Ford chose that painting to display in his house, and that says an awful lot about him.

Good luck if you go looking. After having ours for a while - and assuming I only needed it for two people - I'd probably try to start out with a Scamp (or Casita, but they're tough to find cheap) if I could find one for a similar price. The AC on top blocks visibility anyway, so you might as well have one you can just pull into a walmart parking lot and take a nap in for a couple of hours while you're on a trip.

We'll still keep the pop-up, but I've got my eyes open for a larger one once the kids move out.

90 A double up, Memphrica is both the most miserable city in Tennessee and the home of Harold Ford, Jr.

We always used to laugh at how his campaign team would try to make him look as white as possible in all of his campaign ads, using soft, white lighting tones in the commercials. The pictures above demonstrate the same technique.

You could almost mistake him for a George Zimmerman White Hispanic in those still shots.

97 The sous vide picture looks wrong.
1. The meat (or fish) should be tightly vacuum sealed, with no air or liquid space around it. The bags look very loose.
2. There must be a heating and stirring device hanging on the rim of the pot. This is set to the specific temperature needed for the item being cooked and provides ALL of the warming. It appears that the stove is heating the pan
3. It looks like steam and air bubbles are rising from the water. This means the temperature is WAY too hot.

If you are cooking a steak to, say, medium rare, the controlled temperature in the pot must be 134 F. The cooking time can be 2 hours or more, up to a day or more, as the beef will not go beyond medium rare at that temperature.
Finally, the beef should be taken out of the vacuum sealed package right before eating and seared in a high temperature frying pan for a short time to provide color and flavor.

98 So this happened in my area of operations. A high school senior did a project to install free maxi-pads and tampons at several sites in the school. She was described as "changing the world one period at a time". The entire project was lauded as allowing an open and free discussion about menstruation. But the crowning grace was that it was described as "gender neutral".

Take home lesson: Men who have uteruses (uteri) that slough their linings roughly monthly need tampons too.,

And it seems they completely ignored all the big blue cities.

I don't know the percent of these cities is blue or red. Seems like they were going mostly on income and crime.

Just cause the avg income goes down or stays the same doesn't mean the place is miserable. Crime does have a say in miserableness tho.

Gary In is a miserable place and has been for over half a century. Part of it is because it's a steel town and that literally casts a pall over the place.

253 I think I could name some towns worse than what they list but I'd have to go to the ones they list to make a comparison.

Lots of them in the NE. Not just because they're mostly Dem but also because the industrial age became the technology age and went south and west so towns that once were busy and rich are now poor and dilapidated. Mostly on the numerous rivers where towns clustered for the hydraulic power source.

Milwaukee is increasingly dangerous. Madison is a government \college town so the blue idiocy will be annoying but as far as I know it isn't dangerous. For decades WI politics has been based on if the rest of the state can outvote Milwaukee and Madison. Like how Chicago is blue and the rest of Illinois is red. I'm a broken record, but still the most amazing thing he did - in a night full of amazing things and complete self control - was clear a jam in the middle of the fight between Tony Hawk and the "medic" who was trying to shoot him. That was probably what threw off his timing and was the only reason the attempted murderer only got shot in the arm.

264 "Portland, Oregon."

I watched a 2012 PBS "documentary" last nite, on the meth problem. Conclusion: the "Oregon Model" works to stop meth addiction. So I looked up the meth stats in Oregon since 2012. Nope. It got worse.

The Oregon Model is the one that restricted lawful cold-medicine sales. PBS reasoning: the problem is profits, not law-breaking addicts. They mutter 'profit, profit, profit' like it's the root of all evil. Like Berniebots.

They had a DEA guy on there who claimed he single-handedly killed the Quaalude problem by shutting down manufacture of 'precursors.' So I looked up his report online. The 'precursor' that he shutdown was methaqualone. Nobody told him that methaqualone IS Quaalude, not a 'precursor.' The drug was outright banned.

No point believing any 'documentary' anymore. It's all polemical bullshit spin.

Covington, KY is sadly appropriate. And then the cartels figured out a new way to make meth (P2P meth), which apparently damages your brain much more quickly than the old kind did.

We have it.

It creates so much surplus revenue because college kids don't maintain their grades necessary to maintain the scholarship money that they lowered the grade qualifications. Then they started offering it to non-traditional students. Then they started Tennessee Promise which offers two years of free community college or trade school. Nice they still have a surplus and are figuring out what to do with it as well.

I write my state rep every year and suggest a new program: Pay it to the poor, dumb f*ckers that play the lottery by way of increased prize payouts.

It's too novel an idea for them though. The thought of giving the surplus revenue to the people that provide it is unthinkable.

The story I read from the Guardian says she was abused by a pedo ring and the cops ignored her, either because they were told to, or because they thought she was crazy.

So..if you are a reporter don't you then go ask the cops for their take? I know it was a while ago...but do they have a complaint on file? In the town/year this happened to her were there other complaints? Arrests?

Journalism - it would be great if anyone actually practiced it.

I'll be a miserable wretch by then, 'cause the lyrics are so depressing.

414 "Comrade gp, you sound like you do not understand that "Diversity uber alles!""

A couple years ago, a local TV channel ran a 20 minute film from 1949 that showed what Rockford was like then. I wrote a comment there that asked "How is it that 1949 Rockford, which was 99% 'non-diverse,' was so much healthier and successful than 2019 Rockford, which is now so diverse and vibrant?" That went over quite well.

Diversity == "less white people"
Inclusion == "less white and heterosexual people"
Equity == "forced confiscations from white people"

Thanks to Ace and the cobs for lightening up on comments critical of black dysfunction. Two years ago, these comments would be deleted. Times change.

Andy and Brandy are collectively as dumb as a box of hair, but their handlers aren't. The "nationwide rioting" would be limited to Dem cities where LE would be ordered to stand down, followed by those cities receiving federal "rebuilding" funds. Win-win for them. No way they show up in any other area where they might meet the business end of a rifle and never be seen again. They are sort of the opposite of the rest of us: San Fran and Shitcago are safe havens for them; rural residential areas are their gauntlet.

422 Lots of them in the NE. Not just because they're mostly Dem but also because the industrial age became the technology age and went south and west so towns that once were busy and rich are now poor and dilapidated. Mostly on the numerous rivers where towns clustered for the hydraulic power source.

I am a big fan of building a city and then letting it rot and decay while building up another. There are a myriad of reasons, but much of it has to do with corrupt government.

A mayor will be proud to name a new building, road or bridge after himself, but no one wants to have their name attached to modernizing the sewage system. So money doesn't go after maintenance.

Its easier to lay infrastructure down when putting in new streets and buildings rather than tearing up established neighborhoods. Things change. A sewer designed for five gallon flush will see low flows replace over time.

Power grids that were designed for a few appliances and incandescent bulbs now must support EV charging. Streets retrofitted for bicycle lanes, garages with different cars and use cases, etc.

Build Better Somewhere Else

424 There's been a world of study that the more "diverse" a society is the less successful it is.

It isn't racial though, it is cultural.

American had a brilliant take on that - force everyone living here to adopt American culture. And so the original Brits and Dutch were joined by French, Germans, Scandis, etc and it all just worked.

Then starting in the 60s we started importing people from cultures less like our own. And in parallel stopped trying to force them to become American.

And the results are...obvious.

466 Yeah, there used to be an orange cloud over the Coke Plant at US Steel in Gary. Pollution controls reduced that big time by the time I grew up and spent a few years in that plant.

Interesting cultural history there when I worked there. They had downsized from 20k+ people to about 9k people. The 'merchant mills' (the facilities that made rebar, rounds, etc.) Were rubble piles, as was the tube mill, where my mother worked in the 50s.

Blacks worked in the Coke Plant, Slavs (Poles, Croats, Serbs, etc.) Tended to be in the trades - millwrights, iron workers, carpenters. And the Irish were on the finishing end of the complex (my uncle was one of them).

The vestiges of this class/caste system were present during my time there.

Yep. This confirms the negative efficacy for symptomatic infection that is being seen in the UK data. They tried to handwave that away as some "error in the denominator", claiming some yada-yada. But there it is right there in the big Swedish study.

And further note that efficacy for severe disease and death drops the fastest and the most for the most high risk cohorts. It does the least for the people who need it most.

529 @503 Re: Russo-Jap war (1905), you know why Japan crushed the Russian navy? There wasn't much of it left after sailing from the Baltic sea, around Africa, to Japan.

--------

The naval battle you're referring to wasn't the Port Arthur attack, though. The naval defeat at Port Arthur opened the war. The Russian fleet in Europe then sailed all the way around Africa and Eurasia (which was an impressive feat of logistics in and of itself, given the number of coal refuels required), and - just as it was reaching what should have been the end of a very exhausting voyage - went where it shouldn't have gone, and got ambushed by the Japanese fleet at Tsushima Straits.

The Japanese flagship in that battle - the Mikasa - still exists. It's the only pre-Dreadnought battleship still in existence. She isn't seaworthy, though. In order to avoid having her impact Japan's tonnage requirements under the Washington Naval Treaty, the Japanese filled her hull with cement. The Soviets tried to force the Japanese to scrap her after WW2, but the US told the Soviets to back down.

533 I think Japan's decision not to attack the USSR was about a lot more than just the bloody nose at Khalkin Gol. The go-north vs. go-south debate had already been settled in favor of the only sensible course, the one actually forced on itself by Japan once they decided their (pointless) war in China would not be ended to appease the great powers. Go south. The "resource" area.

Factions of course, as usual, but FM Matsuoka and the Army faction focused on the Soviet menace lost out even before the (entirely avoidable) embargoes made Japan's dilemma concrete (a year's worth of oil, or less, on hand). Sorge's espionage products made sense, because Japan absolutely had to grab oil etc to the south if they were to continue their imperial folly. Hence the world-historical* decision to move Siberian divisions to Moscow, where they were key in winning that key battle.

I don't have one. That was my wish list for off-grid living, should i decide to do that. I expect i would have to make do with a 3-way or 2-way fridge from an RV. It would not be hard to replace the propane burner in an RV fridge with a little kerosene lamp. An alcohol-burning lamp might soot up less.

If I were going off-grid here in Arizona, I would look at building a solar concentrator to heat a working fluid sufficiently hot to run the absorption cooler in the RV fridge.

Supposedly she was working with a gun on the ground, then for unknown reasons, suddenly decided to shoot it off into the air. Nic was nearby, apparently taken aback and yelled "Make an announcement! You just blew my fcuking eardrum out!" He then immediately went to the producers trailer to demand she be fired.

They often used copper lines for propane supply to the fridge. Copper work hardens from vibration, and often fractures right inside the flare nut. I'd recommend using a properly-rated rubber hose armored with stainless steel braid. And a combustible gas detector or LEL detector to monitor the fridge compartment and propane compartment would be smart, too.

562 Ha! Ha! Ha! Nice catalytic converter you had there ...
Posted by: LOL at October 29, 2021 12:55 AM (MIODZ)

Catalytic converter thefts could be shut down easily with a few prepared bait trucks. Converter thieves like 4X4 trucks and large SUV's because they can simply roll under with their Sawzall, and don't have to jack the rig up. So dummy up a few converters with a tear gas grenade inside them, and tumbler switch that starts a timer running as soon as the converter gets moved off its normal horizontal position. Set the timer to run for 5 minutes, and then ignite the grenade. Just enough time for bad guy to get the converter sawn off, into the getaway vehilce, and a mile down the road.

Actually, if you just tied them off, limp, around the hot dogs, the trapped air and steam inside would inflate them, once they were dropped inot the boiling water.

anyone who takes election "results" from #Failifornia at face value is not a serious person, because this is no longer a serious state.

i vote in every election. i take my ballot to the polls, and put it in the box myself: i'm sure it gets down to Norwalk, i'm sure it is run through the counting machine, but i have zero faith that my votes are counted as cast.

universal vote by mail, harvesting, Dominion machines, etc... this is a turd world country, and all that matters is who counts the votes.

604 Mornin', folk,

The 50 most miserable cities: Here I am considering Huntington, WV, as a retirement location. Ah, well.

Up early to work out, I'm sitting on the floor typing, with Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat purring next to me as he waits for his breakfast. He's more active and sociable in the morning, rather like me. I haven't heard from the pet crematorium yet about the late Wolf; maybe I can bring him home tomorrow. I'm trying to decide where to put the urn as a place of honor. The bookshelf with the other cats is pretty crowded now.
