  • Them: How long will that take?
Me, thinking: Normally six weeks, can probably get something in two.
Them: Because we promised it would be ready on Monday.

  • Intel's 12th generation Alder Lake desktop CPUs arrive next week. (AnandTech)

Prices have been announced, and the 12600K costs 10% more than the 11600K. It's 20% to 40% faster, so that's not a bad deal.

No benchmark data yet except for the fluff from Intel and random leaks, but it's worth waiting a week to see.

Laptop parts are expected to be announced at CES in January.

Holomyth Season 1. Season 2 is airing now.

(Actually the whole thing was drawn and animated by one slightly crazy Hololive fan. The music is Ina's original song, Violet.)

6 Intel's 12th generation Alder Lake desktop CPUs arrive next week.
---
This generation of x86 CPUs is very promising and if that promise holds seems to indicate that Intel finally is getting its act together. The design of this CPU, with performance and energy efficient cores, validates the design ARM pioneered. Well power consumption for a desktop CPU is of less importance than in laptops I still hope it comes in with some advancements in power efficiency. The days of throwing more watts and clock cycles to make chips quicker we're heading off into the sunset. I can't wait for AnandTech to give this CPU a proper thrashing. I personally want Intel to succeed greatly here. They have been doing a good job of becoming irrelevant for the last several years and none of that bodes well for the overall health of the computing industries.

I read this article this morning. I have mucked around with cheap tablets in the past. In the end they all turned out to be muck and a complete waste of my money. But if you're broke and they are all you can afford they're a hell of a great computer. It is pretty hard to get on the internet using a rock.

17 This story caught my eye. Verizon is partnering with Amazon to provide internet access via Amazon satellites. Elon Musk is building out a system like this right now. For people who live in rural areas this has great potential to give them reasonably performing internet access. Plus it gives me alternatives to get out from underneath Comcast's rotten monopoly. The Musk system is not built out for use over the southern part of the United States yet but the minute it is I will be looking at it.

Perfectly valid use case for that class of machines. My problem is I try to treat them like my desktop and I'm always unhappy with them. I think it fair to say I have unrealistic expectations. Of course none of that has ever stopped me from plowing ahead anyhow.

23 Mornin', volk,

Up not unreasonably early, for me. Last night's rain has blown through, leaving it damp but 66 F. outside, a good 8-10 degrees less hot, as the weather mavens promised. I'm sitting on the floor with Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat, typing on my laptop.

Good news, citizens! The Glorious Leaders have decreed an end to face diapers in the state and city! (At least this week.) LaToya the Destroya says the mask mandate will be lifted tomorrow, in time for Halloween. And at least one suburban parish says no more of that craziness in their schools. I'm hoping all this will extend to the public library, and that I can browse for some books I haven't read 3-4 times in the last few years.

Windows 11 came on my not cheap Surface Pro 8 thingy. From a typical user's point of view I can't see why you'd want to upgrade a perfectly functional Windows 10 machine. At times Windows 11 feels like the whole project was run by an interior decorator, they moved the couch around and now I bust my foot once a day at least. The most glaring thing out of the box is they screwed up the start menu in an attempt to make it more like a cell phone screen but without basic things like being able to put app icons in folders and limiting you to 18 things on the menu. I have worked around most of the deficiencies but it's still irritating. And if you like the shiny saturated colored icons then Windows 11 is for you. Overall Windows 11 is fine but no more fine than Windows 10. And you ever have upgraded a Windows machine from an old version of the OS to a new one... That can be super exciting. Be sure to know how to restore a machine before you start.

26 I also hope my employer will lift this face muzzle nonsense. They did it for about a month this summer. I've been dodging it as much as I can, and have not yet had my ADA exemption (to skip it while in my office) approved. Maybe it won't be necessary. God, I hate all this, and watching my fellow citizens revealed as compliant zombies.

29 Here in Southern New Mexico we are on the verge of going into an Arctic ice age, it is getting down into the low 40s at night. D
On the plus side it's still getting up into the high 70s and on occasion touching 80 during the day. At this rate I may have to turn the heat on by December. I know my life is really hard.

Face masks are still a thing here in New Mexico. I don't think this face mask mandate's going to end until the current governor is voted out of office. That could be another four or eight years.

I'm not upgrading my two windows 10 machines. Fear of missing out causes all kinds of confusion in life and this is one of those instances. Windows 10 is going to get security updates for another 5 years and they're still adding minor feature updates to it. The core things you do on Windows 10 are identical on Windows 11 such things as email, calendars, surfing the web, watching videos and listening to music, backing things up to OneDrive, over the next few years the two operating systems will probably differentiate themselves more and but it's not going to be dramatic for a typical computer user. As a functional manner if you were still on Windows 7 you would be perfectly fine for everything that a typical user would do except that for security fixes; I haven't checked recently but I think Windows 7 is reached its end of life for security patches and that is something

What I hated about my Win 10 Dell machine, and still do, is how "helpful" it continually tries to be. It kept trying to anticipate what I wanted. When I first got it, when I'd hover over a link more than a few seconds, it would open the link even though I hadn't clicked it. I turned off the clicker pad and installed a wireless mouse. It worked much better then.

Backing up your systems/data on a regular basis is the most fundamental thing that you can do and most people don't do it. I've had cases land in my lap where people didn't do that and they lost a decade of their life. Another thing people overlook is how to hand off your computer systems and all the things that are associated with it in the event of a catastrophic medical event or passing on. I have a complete document drafted which I update regularly explaining how to get at things that people will need when my time is up. When I first started doing the evaluation and data gathering about a decade ago I was shocked and how crabbed into my life technology had become. Today that is even more so the case.

A shame about the magazine going only digital, if true. They used to have some great photography, and you can't appreciate that on a screen the same way. You must be in the southern part of the state; ABQ and Santa Fe are not really inexpensive any more. I've been to Carlsbad and driven through Hobbs, but not much else south of ABQ.

I looked at houses on Zillow in the Las Cruces area. Some nice bargains, but NM doesn't seem to understand about air-conditioning a dwelling for hot, hot weather. I know it's bone-dry there -- but when it hits over 90, I don't care how dry it is, I need cool air.

Regarding the cheap tablets. I had bought a Amazon Fire a few years back. It's okay to use if you are looking for a larger screen cell phone that doesn't make phone calls or texts.
I can watch movies and do internet stuff pretty good.
The one knock that ZDNet reviews gives it is, that it doesn't have access to Gurgle apps or services.

I found that out after I purchased it. Did some searching around, and found you can side load Gurgle Play Store into it.

77 It created some furor but the cutoff for supporting older systems on Win11 saves many the trouble of giving it much thought. The real value for Win11 will be for new hardware that is just starting to appear, beginning with Alder Lake. My newest desktop and laptop are both just a generation too old to qualify and that doesn't strike me as a problem. By the time prices come down or my finances greatly improve, Win11 will be a given to make full use of the newer CPU/GPU and specialized subsystems now emerging. Some of the new stuff will be backported to win10 but don't expect much of that beyond 2022 as the demand fades. Stuff like DirectStorage will probably never work entirely as intended on Win10, particularly on hardware too old to upgrade to Win11, and as a decent amount of software that is designed around it enters the picture, adopting Win11 will have largely happened by default for most. People whining in 2024 about the PC version of a game originating on the PS5 and Xbox Series X not running as well on Win10 as it does on Win11 will come off as old cranks, because they will be.

80 I recently got the 2019 10" Kindle Fire tablet for well under $100. My main objective was to have a display large enough to allow reading while using a treadmill and keeping almost entirely hands free. That it is also a perfectly good 1080p video player and other expected functions is a bonus.

It may not compare well to a brand new $500 iPad but for the price, if you're a Prime and Kindle Unlimited subscriber, it's a subsidized miracle.

Some day, eventually, once Big Pharma has sucked every dollar they can snitch, were some research will show that there were easy ways to stop the spread.

But not until Big Pharma is big, fat, bloated with every tax dollar they can snitch.

190 There is a huge push by ignorant westerners to belittle Christianity because it was not exactly a "religion of the masses" until the reformation.

But Buddhism went through almost the exact same arc, at the exact same time, with Enlightenment being the province of the aristocracy until movements like Pure Land started to made it more universal.

But going by western "Education", Christianity is Evil and Buddhism is Authentic and Wonderful, now go upstairs and read your Chomsky, young man.

The Reformation is largely forgotten, practiced by what some my call the remnant of the larger public. It has been replaced by and ersatz version which I call The American Religion witch share very little doctrinally with Roman Catholicism or true Protestantism. (Some call this Evangelicalism, but that term is also very fuzzy)

If you're a person of the Christian faith and you know and like the old Protestant hymns, you can sing, "When morning gilds the skies, my heart awaking cried, "May Jesus Christ be praised!") It is a good way to start the morning.

There is absolutely zero reason he needs to travel around the world to do anything that he does. With today's communication technology - cell phones with facetime chat; conference calling on computers, laptops, cell phones, ipads, etc - all these "flying around the world to save the planet" people can hold all their conferences from the comfort of their own homes.

But no one of influence directly confronts them on this hypocrisy and forces them to answer.

219 It's universal; all over the world at least.

Sales always promises everything THEN asks the techs/installers when it can get done and of course not when they want.

This sort of stuff keeps happening in a company that allows it. Everything is an emergency and it's all top priority and thus (they think) people rise to the demand and do things faster than they would normally. What they don't see (or want to see) is that the work is done with less oversight or safety or quality control and the possibility of things not working later goes up but then that's Support and becomes THEIR problem and comes out of their budget. Marketing walks off with their bonuses, installers go on to the next emergency and support is left to deal with an angry customer.

This will never improve unless a change of ownership occurs. Get out now and find some place sane to work.

Not to diminish the Virginia students r4ped by the trans, but Anderson is a Denver Public Schools school board member who is accused of sexually assaulting over 60 HS girls, primarily illegal aliens (easier to victimize). The school board is brushing it under the rug via an internal investigation, and Tay is now going for the school board president position.

This is who Garland is protecting. Not the students.
