Daily Tech News 27 October 2021

Top Story

  • Somehow my day job and its largest customers conspired to schedule four major events in the space of ten days, all requiring different software. Yay.

I mentioned some time ago that I expected October to be insane. At that time I only knew about one of these events.

Two down, two to go. Yeah, working late again tonight. Eighteen hour day on five hours sleep, just what I like best.

  • AMD reported another record quarter. (AnandTech)

Revenue up 54% year on year; net income up 137%. Nice work if you can get it.

But does come with the option, like the MacBook Pros and their spiffy M1 CPUs, to buy a polishing cloth? For $19.00. That's always fun. Just don't drop it immediately and crack the screen. That's always fun too but in a negative way. Phones are cheap paying for the cell phone repair shop is not. Luckily I have one of the best technicians on the planet here in Las Cruces. He can even micro solder. Such a stud.

It is things like this that explain why I never come within 50 yards of an Apple product if I could help it. I even would walk on the other side of the street if it would help. When I lived in downtown Seattle I was in an apex Apple smugness culture. I look back on those days with a fondness like you would for a vomitorium.

31 Mornin', folk,

Up to work out. Supposedly it will rain today and get cool tonight with the promised coolness to last through the weekend. About flippin' time!

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat maintains his low-energy lifestyle. I guess as long as he eats and is pretty much okay with his life, and enjoys our petting and company, he's doing well.

Linda has picked up 3 or 4 modern horror/terror/spooky movies for Halloween. I suspect they will all be poorly lit and with a distinct lack of color. If you're going to do that as a filmmaker, why not just go black-and-white? It'll be a lot more effective.

How do you survive without a smartphone? Do you live on squirrels exclusively? Does it have a cord in a rotary dial? Did the phone come with a polishing cloth?

Being serious, I think about going back to a basic flip phone. There are some advantages but then reality intrudes and I know I can't. And if I'm being dead honest there's not a chance in hell I would ever do that. But I do think about it and I understand why you would choose to go that route.

Posted by: LostInSpace at October 27, 2021 03:18 AM (2YNem)

34 Hi, Wolfus! Glad you get some cools and Chekov seems generally happy.

Saturday "creature feature" really turned me off of horror movies. Like you said: poorly lit. Really sucked when the important scenes were so dark I couldn't tell what was happening. Spook movies seemed to be the worst offenders in that regard.

41 I truly love Pixy's late night tech posting. The slightly aggressive incredulous tone is something I completely understand having spent a life with technology. At some point in your technology career all the shiny fancy joy gets ground off and what you're left with is, "Seriously we're putting up with this nonsense, again?" Sadly computer people are basically drug addicts and they can't kick this stuff not that any of them try. Instead it all ends in the same place. We read the tech press with the mindset that it's a fix and throw waffles at the wall when it annoys us, which is frequently, and go, "Seriously we're putting up with this nonsense, again?

Posted by: LostInSpace at October 27, 2021 03:40 AM (2YNem)

42 Hubby has a notebook that he likes. Forgot about that one, too! It's android based, some off-brand that was a Christmas gift. He likes it for the games-- it's like an oversized smartphone, LOL.

43 One desktop, two laptops with a third to come soon, three smartphones, and a network drive, and we haven't even got to the camera gear and the audio equipment. Like I said computer people are basically drug addicts.

I lived with my grandparents for a couple years while I attended a community college. My grandfather was not an idle man and I can't tell you how many projects we had going on at any given time. There was nothing he couldn't build or fix a direct result of him raising a family in the depression. In those two years I grew up and became the person I am now because of those two. The lessons learned have served me well over the course of my life. And yes now when I have to go do things I don't like doing them because he's not there to do them with me.

Oh boy, oh boy! What could posssibly go wrong...

Of course you know where the main water shutoff is located, just in case they won't budge even after a shot of penetrating oil and need to be replaced also?

I need to replace our kitchen faucet. 30 or 40 years old and leaks ever so slightly. Probably just a washer issue, but it's ugly.

Keep a spray bottle of winter formula windshield cleaner in your truck.

Icy windows? No problemo! Spray it on, let sit for just a moment while you get in and start vehicle... turn on the wipers.

Works great for light ice. Takes a bit longer for heavy ice, but it'll scrape away much easier.

78 Dumbbell Edwards has lifted the edict about face diapers for the state -- for 28 days. Schools, the places that need it the least, still are under the state's thumb. And Dumbbell may slap it back on "if the numbers go up" or some such wording. LaToya the Destroya won't give up her power, though, and the city proper is still being held prisoner. Jeez.

96 Chuckle reading the news from Houston this morning - it seems that though there are 22 active lawsuits and multiple police investigations into sexual misconduct around the Houston QB, the league has decided there isn't sufficient information on the subject to warrant putting said QB on a special commissioner's inactive list - allowing Houston to ship him elsewhere. But I'm sure they will be wearing those pink socks some weekend to celebrate breast cancer - women's voices matter and all.

Gilbert, 76, became eligible for parole after his 75 years-to-life sentence was shortened by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in August, hours before he left office. The New York State corrections department announced that the inmate stood before the parole board earlier this month for final approval.

194 I am afraid my niece will have the shot in her boys ASAP. I haven't seen any of them since May of 2019, and I'm sure I won't see them any time soon. Even her own mother says she's a hypochondriac.

199 Woke up at 130AM because I was a bit hypoglycemic. On my way down the stairs the power cut out probably due to the noreaster. Ten seconds later the Generac cuts over and 22kW of fossil fuel powered goodness came to life. Thank the Lord I didn't do the solar panel nonsense my neighbor tried to talk me into.

200 Good morning! It's a sultry 30F outside and there's a slight breeze. Gonna be a chilly ride in later today.

201 VIA, Good Morning to you. The time spent with the Horde is the highlight of my year. My ribs still hurt from laughing so much.

Hope you are well.

205 " The time spent with the Horde is the highlight of my year. "

Yes, it truly is a special time, with special people.

We were lucky enough to make the NoVaMoMe this year, but alas, we were not able to get our live in alignment to support getting down to y'all's.

Next year...hopefully.
