Caipira Chopping Tobacco
Jose Ferraz de Almeida Junior

This is the sort of work that dances on my personal line between "art" and "painting." The artist is technically skilled and the scene is pleasing, and perhaps even evocative of interesting themes.

But...it doesn't grab me and it doesn't suggest that the artist was passionate or tremendously involved.

72 Whittling away again in Caipirinhaville

Posted by: Warai-otoko at October 25, 2021 08:44 AM (6FeV1)

73 This painting is indicative of several elements of art that reflect the injustice of the world. This is a skilled laborer in the developing world working with his hands to satisfy the appetites of wealthy Westerners while earning so little that he cannot even afford shoes. This slice of life is reflective of the cultural/racial devaluation of people of color that was common in that time and continues today.

But not all is well even if we discount the undercurrent of hegemonic oppression implicitly reflected in this piece. In this work we also see the man occupying space in a manner that is reflective of colonialist ambitions. His legs are spread wide in the common "man-spreading" pose, yet his feet are not parallel. His left leg protrudes further outward, consuming even more space than mere spreading would demand. His arms are out beyond his thighs, occupying even more territory. His masculine traits of enlargement and territorial occupation show how even the oppressed can be oppressors themselves.

Overall, this is a very valuable piece that should be studied but not generally consumed without training.

165 Growth Investor update this week. Interesting comments on Novavax. Reading this reminds me of the movie "The Big Short". Where Brad Pitt's character scolds the young investors for being excited about making money from the crash of the American economy and millions of Americans suffering.

Novavax, Inc. (NVAX) is having a rough October, as the stock has dropped more than 40% in the past four weeks. A significant leg of the recent decline occurred this week following a report that Novavax is facing production delays for its COVID-19 vaccine. The report noted that while Novavax's vaccine has a more than 90% efficacy rate, the company is struggling to produce a vaccine that meets regulators' quality standards.

Interestingly, Novavax has partnered with Serum institute of India and applied to the World Health Organization for an emergency use authorization for its vaccine. If approved, the vaccine could be provided to poorer countries around the world. Novavax has also applied for regulatory authorization for its vaccine in India, Indonesia and the Philippines, as the company aims to provide vaccines to more low- and middle-income countries.

Novavax also plans to file for emergency use authorization for its vaccine in the U.S. by the end of the year. And the company still expects to produce 150 million doses of its vaccine per month by the end of the year, too. Novavax had initially committed to provide 1.1 billion doses globally.

Still, I know the volatility in NVAX shares have been a bitter pill to swallow in recent weeks. You may recall that when I originally added NVAX to the Buy List I noted it was an Aggressive, more volatile stock -- and the company was on the verge of turning a profit. The outlook for third-quarter results is a little disappointing, with analysts' looking for an earnings per share loss of $3.91. But the outlook brightens more long term, as fourth-quarter earnings are expected to surge 213.7% year-over-year.

So, for now, I recommend that we continue to hold NVAX. Rest assured, if the stock continues to grow even more volatile, we will look for a window of strength and exit the stock on a bounce. Hold NVAX.

"No," the man said. "The gun. It is cold. It is not loaded."
The actor looked at the gun and then at the man. Then he looked at the young girl behind the camera. Then he looked at the gun again.
"I have been around guns all my life," he said. "I know guns."
"Fake guns," the man replied. He did not like the actor.
"Real guns," the actor said. "Believe me."
Then he aimed the gun at the girl's head and pulled the trigger. The gun barked and the girl's head split like a ripe melon. The mouth-part of the melon said Aah. Then everything was quiet.

In a truly foreign culture this may be a cogent point. It depends on whether shoes and protective clothing are valued by that culture. Most cultures do have that in their value systems, so it is a safe assumption.

In this case, however, it is not that straightforward. This is a Latin culture that is in the new world (implied by the fact that the scene shows tobacco work) and so the culture itself is the result of colonialism. The relative low power position of the culture due to supremacy and hegemony doesn't negate the fact that the culture itself is the result of yet more hegemony and racism by other colonial forces. As a result, we can know that this culture shares major elements with the colonial culture that created it through oppression, and one element is shoes which are common to all European cultures.

Great question, though. Thank you.

Q: Is this a wealth tax?

A: My guess is no because it's a tax on gains, not wealth.

This is one of those 'it sounds great the first year' kind of taxes, but if the market dives (like so many have predicted) the accumulated losses the second year will leave a huge hole in revenues.
This then leads to Congress trying to make sure the Billionaires keep making capital gains, which leads to an even larger 'income inequality'.

326 Treasury Secretary Yellen was far more careful in her wording than Pelosi. The reason being that a wealth tax is likely to be found unconstitutional.

354 My guess is no because it's a tax on gains, not wealth.

I go for minimalism over recyclability, for suffocation, use zip ties. You get to stand back and watch an amusing dance.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 25, 2021 09:29 AM (KZzsI)

Depends on the breed. Most terriers, esp the farm breeds like nothing better than to go on a solo hunt for vermin. Some of the larger breed of herding and herd protection dogs are totally solo and would prefer to do their job without human inference. Just depends on the breed. There's a lot of variation.

Dogs are generally social animals so interact with you socially. Some people don't like that.

Cats are well...stupid as a group. And solo predators. People confuse their solo predator nature as aloofness and deep intelligence. Research has shown That intelligence is just not there. People love their cats and that's fine, but it's a bit like being the guy or gal who gets dumped and keeps trying to get the dumper to love them.

YMMV.

Honestly I don't think people who push for this stuff think that far. Consider the tale of grocery bags.

They started out paper bags which were cheap, reusable, and useful. But THE BRAZILIAN RAINFORESTS!!! THE LUNGS OF THE PLANET!!!1!1!!

So we went to plastic bags, which somehow were deemed more ecological???

But some kid did a science project at middle school, and somehow his wild inventions turned into absolute fact and WE MUST SAVE THE SEA TURTLE SOME GUY SHOVED A PLASTIC STRAW UP HIS NOSE AND PHOTOGRAPHED IT!!!1!!

So we went to reusable bigger bags, which cost customers to purchase, and were too spendy to reuse as kitty litter and trash bags... and still were made of plastic

Testing is justified if it can help develop treatments for people. People are higher than animals.

Wanton cruelty or pointless discomfort are not justifiable and are evil. I don't know what these dog experiments were hoping to achieve, but I have a hard time believing that the degree of mistreatment those animals suffered was necessary or that the treatment they were trying to develop (and its underlying condition) justified it if it was. If you're going to be that cruel and there's no choice but to be that cruel, what you're developing had damn well better be life-saving. I doubt any of that is true, and it was just wanton misery for its own sake inflicted by psychopaths getting their jollies in the third world.

Cats can be incredibly affectionate and loyal, but are shy by nature. They survive by running away and hiding, because they are small and not very strong. But if you're quiet and gentle, they can be friendly.

Cat people don't interact with dogs well, and dogs become disinterested. Dog people don't interact with cats well and cats become defensive, frightened, or angry.

And are filthy. Reusable bags, unless you clean them every time (and no one does) are nice vectors for bad things.

Single-use plastics are a tremendous benefit to human health. They're made and packaged cleanly, sealed up, used once and then discarded. Is this wasteful? Perhaps. It certainly can be, especially if you use a lot of them without really needing them (drinking bottled water at home when you don't need to, etc.).

But they have a staggering public health and sanitation benefit.

Yeah, it crumbles pretty rapidly when exposed to elements. Turns into powder, basically. I mean, its not some supernatural substance from another dimension, its processed petroleum. It will eventually return to its origins, and that does not take 10,000 years like some claim.

Feral and wild cats don't do well in groups but domestic cats have more people skills. Mother cats (queens) creche their kittens with each other and the kittens are very affectionate to each other. As cats domesticated they kept more kitten traits like being able to tolerate each other, as well as humans, which seem to fill the Mom spot in their heads.

Others have covered that answer fairly well, the context was she was protesting the use of plastics because of straws in sea turtle noses or something. In her mind there are people whose job is just to paw through dumpsters and dump recovered plastics into the ocean.

People think electricity comes out of a hole in the wall and chicken and other products come from "in the back" (as in "Could you go in the back and check for more?")

So I have no idea what array of steps goes through her mind as in to how a discarded plastic straw in Sacramento kills a turtle on the opposite side of the world's largest ocean.

She perceives it as her sin, and as you know, sin does not mean someone was hurt, only that one has committed transgressions.
But since she can't think that far she has to emotionalize it, she can't think it through and has to rationalize her guilt by proving to herself what the damage was.

Dave Rubin has a story about how he came out on September 10 2001 and his gut reaction to 9-11 was that he caused it by coming out. But Dave has a brain and actually uses it, unlike yoga pants sin girl.
