Daily Tech News 23 October 2021

Top Story

  • Do not use Node.js, under any circumstances, for anything. (Reddit)

Yet another massive package compromise because the entire ecosystem is built and managed by morons. (Not the good kind either.)

I don't know who it was or why they decided we needed something worse than PHP, but that's what we have.

Tech News

  • Apple's new M1 Max has the GPU compute power of an RTX 3060. (Tom's Hardware)

Benchmarks on GPU acceleration in Adobe Premiere Pro are in line with the raw specs listed by Apple, rather than with the synthetic OpenGL benchmarks that put it closer to an RTX 3080.

It's still very, very good for integrated graphics.

The M1 Max is a huge chip - three times the size of AMD's 8 core laptop chips despite being built on the smaller 5nm process. What I think they've done is undervolted it to keep power consumption low, and that is constraining GPU performance (though not CPU performance, since the chip is 80% GPU and only 20% CPU).

In a desktop system with twice the power budget it might perform quite a bit better. Not twice as fast, but better.

  • Intel's discrete GPUs will be available at retail in Q1 2022. (AnandTech)

Finally, we'll have a source of graphics cards not restricted by the limited space available TSMC and Samsung's production lines.
The fundamental building block of Alchemist is the Xe Core. For manufacturing, Intel is turning to TSMC's N6 process to do it.
    Well, crap.

  • The ASRock X570S Riptide has PCIe slots. (AnandTech

Specifically, six of them. Most ATX motherboards these days only have three. With the built-in hardware on those boards you can get away with just one, for a GPU, but if you then add a 10Gb Ethernet card, and one of the slots shares lanes with an M.2 slot, you suddenly run out.

This board gives you one x16 slot, one x4, one x2, and three x1. Which is fine; a PCIe 4 x1 slot is enough for 10Gb Ethernet and nearly enough for dual 10Gb. Plus two M.2 slots, built-in 2.5Gb Ethernet, and the other usual stuff.

  • The Polygon blockchain paid a security researcher $2 million for finding a bug and then not stealing $600 million. (Tom's Hardware)

    Not crime pays sometimes.

  • DDR5 will be 60% more expensive than DDR4, at least initially. (WCCFTech)

Not unexpected, and previous memory generation shifts have been worse.

  • Working in tech kind of sucks. (ZDNet)

On the other hand, these people are idiots:
So pervasive were the feelings of burnout amongst data engineers that 78% said they wished their job came with a therapist to help them manage stress

  • Intel's future depends on making everyone else's chips. (Ars Technica)

    No it doesn't.

  • Safari is the new Internet Explorer. (The Register)

Chrome supports 94% of the 2021 web compatibility suite. Firefox manages 91%. Safari just 71%.

At my day job the UI team curses Safari constantly. But it's the only browser available on iOS. No matter what you install, it's just Safari with a coat of paint over it.

4 "Never eat stale watermelon"

Just the other day, opened up a watermelon that my wife bought...2 months ago. It was still good a sweet! I consider it lucky...

5 I have a project I'm working on with folks in NZ; it's a bitch. Can't send anyone over without them being quaranteened in a hotel for two weeks, and if they come over here, they can't return to work for two weeks after they go back.

7 "working in tech kind of sucks"

Yes it does. For me, it's the frustration of trying to find parts that are AVAILABLE. Embedded processors? Sorry, the ones you want have a 50wk lead time. Motor drivers? Same deal, pal. Inductors, connectors? Ain't you listening?

10 Thanks, Pixy, for the mostly unintelligible Tech Thread.

One day, I'm going to have to buy a ethernet card for my desktop, since a lightning strike took out the motherboard port. My only way to connect to the web. Fuckity.

But I bought a new win 10 laptop instead, and now that prick is clamoring to install win 11.

I've barely got win 10 tamed, and now they want to double screw me with the much moar nosy 11.

Shee-it.

Dunno, but when bread or other pastries go stale, I refer to them as "dwarf bread". If you've read Terry Pratchet's "Disc World" series, you know what I mean...that stuff is so hard, it's deadly.

16 I still have win 8.1. They told me the sky would fall but I have not seen it. In my experience, you need more hardware and more ram to run the new platform. At some point the gain is lost. Sure my comp is bigger and faster. But what do I actually gain from it? What does it do that my old school system does not?

I'm still unvaxxed and win11 free, so suck it TPTB.

Fortunately, I (probably by accident) disabled MS from auto upgrading to win11; I wasn't so happy when win7 fcuked me in the squeakhole, er, auto upgraded me to win8. I let that laptop die.

43 One thing I liked about the company that put together my last two systems- they seem to have deactivated some of the more extreme windows updates. It will download security updates, but does not seem to allow update to change the system in any way.

Something I notice from time to time: My work laptop is a windows machine. I use excel to create work instructions and the format is pretty heavily edited by me to maximize the amount of space on the page (usually 11x17) that can be used. Every now and then on that machine, an update will come through and somehow screw up the template. Has happened a handful of times over the past 4 years or so. I am always left to wonder- what, why?

That is funny! Maybe DS needed the light treatment. But I'm exasperated with all the "reboots" of serious shows into comedies, like 21 Jump Street. I thank Guy Ritchie for NOT turning The Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie into camp or comedy, and staying true to the spirit of the original.

>>If a browser on iOS is merely a coat of paint over Safari . . . what of running Brave (as I am)?

Third-party browsers aren't merely different versions of Safari, they're also slower versions of Safari, because apple requires developers to use a slower, less optimized version of apples webkit, while Safari uses more optimized versions.

What got Microsoft in trouble is they didn't send boatloads of cash to Bill Clinton. Microsoft got snarled up in antitrust because it was claimed that to get the OS you had to use their browser. Somehow this made it impossible for Netscape to be installed on Windows. Magically 20 years later what the big tech companies are getting away with makes Microsoft look like a charity.
