NIH Contradicts Fauci, Admits Funding Gain-of-Function Research at the Wuhan Lab
Molecular biologist Richard Ebright posted a letter from the National Institute of Health confirming that they did in fact fund gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab.
At Breitbart:Remember, NIH funded EcoHealth Alliance, which in turn granted the Wuhan lab a subaward or subgrant. This already smells like "grant laundering" to me. But this letter confirms that EcoHealth used NIH money to fund gain-of-function research -- and that Fauci knew it. NIH's records say as much.
Fauci testified to Senators at a hearing in May that the NIH "has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology." However, the NIH's October 20 letter to House Oversight Committee Ranking Member James Comer (R-KY) showed that the NIH grant, which was awarded to EcoHealth Alliance and then sub-awarded to the Wuhan lab, funded a research project during 2018 and 2019 that tested "if spike proteins from naturally occurring bat coronaviruses circulating in China were capable of binding to the human ACE2 receptor in a mouse model." The letter added: "In this limited experiment, laboratory mice infected with the SHC014 WIV1 bat coronavirus became sicker than those infected with the WIV1 bat coronavirus." According to the Department of Health and Human Services, "gain-of-function" research is research that improves the ability of a pathogen to cause disease. Ebright tweeted that in the letter, the NIH "corrects untruthful assertions by NIH Director Collins and NIAID Director Fauci that NIH had not funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan."
I assume that is the ruse Fauci uses to claim that we didn't fund gain-of-function -- that there were terms and conditions forbidding this sort of research, attached to the grant. But Fauci has repeatedly claimed that what EcoHealth funded was not gain-of-function, period.

343 I do not believe that Youngkin is benefitting from poor Biden polling. There really isn't that explicit a Biden-McAuliffe tie other than party. McAuliffe was a reasonably popular governor who is a Clintonite style lib that gives out/promises goodies to all the "right" people. He does not for the most part fly the purple haired freak flag as a Democrat.
With the Loudoun County news happening, McAuliffe was inexorably tied to the bad guy side because he is in thrall to the teacher's unions. Then he stepped on his crank in a debate and someone on Youngkin's team - who had stayed out of the school board thing prior - capitalized. Seriously - a month ago he was pitching a middle class tax cut for Virginians like it was 1998 or something.
Youngkin is right now more lucky than good. He can't count on flipping heads straight for the next 2 weeks so I hope he has some good people helping him along.

I disagree that's the only use. If you identify a feature of a virus, isolate it, add it to a different virus, predict how the changed virus will behave, then test that prediction, that's straightforward and legitimate science.

Viruses tend to mutations that make them less fatal and more transmissible. The virus survives better if it does not immediately kill its host. It survives and makes many more copies of itself if it is easily transmitted to other people.
Delta is much more transmissible than the original virus. That is why it hit us so bad this Summer.
It seemed like the East Coast version of the Chinese Coronavirus was much more virulent than the California version?

I wouldn't have any problem with them just watching it grow, if that had been what they were actually doing.
But that's not what they were doing. They were deliberately altering and manipulating viruses, i.e., adding proteins and spikes and other, non-naturally-occurring things, to the viruses, for the very specific purpose of making the viruses more infectious and deadly to human beings. That is what I object to.
