The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“This is extremely concerning. The ship and containers are very close to Victoria, BC, and a big storm is forecast to hit tonight. We … are worried this may be yet another environmental disaster,” David Boudinot, president of Surfrider Foundation Canada, an environmental group

Quote II

"You never let the muzzle of a weapon cover something you don't intend to destroy." Bryan Carpenter

Quote III

“I do not have an accounting of what the Chinese may have done, and I am fully in favor of any further investigation of what went on in China. However, I will repeat again — the NIH and NIAID categorically has not funded gain-of-function research to be conducted in the Wuhan Institute of Virology," Anthony Fauci

This is a stunning decision. Illinois State Supreme Court rules 6-0 in favor of gun rights in Cook County (Chicago).

The Illinois Supreme Court ruled on Oct. 21 that two taxes on guns and ammunition in Cook County violate the state’s constitution because they affect law-abiding citizens’ Second Amendment right to acquire firearms for self-defense.

Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis wrote in a 6–0 decision that the taxes violate the constitution’s uniformity clause, while also pointing out that the revenue from the generated tax isn’t directed toward funds or programs that reduce gun violence.

“While the taxes do not directly burden a law-abiding citizen’s right to use a firearm for self-defense, they do directly burden a law-abiding citizen’s right to acquire a firearm and the necessary ammunition for self-defense,” Theis wrote in a 14-page opinion (pdf) filed on Thursday.

“Under the plain language of the ordinances, the revenue generated from the firearm tax is not directed to any fund or program specifically related to curbing the cost of gun violence,” she noted. “Additionally, nothing in the ordinance indicates that the proceeds generated from the ammunition tax must be specifically directed to initiatives aimed at reducing gun violence.”

When whips are outlawed only outlaws will have whips, at least in downtown Reno, NV.

The Reno City Council voted to ban the possession and use of whips without a permit in downtown Reno on Wednesday.

Councilwoman Jenny Brekhus, who said she was not present when the ordinance was introduced, was the only no vote.

Brekhus said that she wants the ordinance applied city-wide and expressed concern that as is, the ban targets certain demographics.

City attorney Karl Hall explained that the ordinance is restricted to the downtown area because complaints to the police were concentrated in that area. He added that there may be areas outside of downtown where whips may be useful

Add one more thing I'm guilty of to my rap sheet. Middlebury hires counseling director who claims 'whiteness' is the cause of 'psychic suffering'

Last month, Middlebury College hired Alberto Soto to serve as its Director of Counseling. In an interview Soto told The Middlebury Campus that “source of all our psychic suffering,” are “whiteness, heteronormativity,” and “patriarchal systems”.

“The body and mind cannot be healed solely by self-care and focusing on surviving,” Soto told the student newspaper. “At some point we must address and identify the source of all our psychic suffering, which is whiteness, heteronormativity, patriarchal systems, etc.”

Soto earned his PhD in psychology at Brigham Young University, a conservative, Mormon institution.

I'm sorry fans of baseball, I just never got into that sport. But I find the World Series being played in the State of Georgia pretty damn satisfying.

ATLANTA — Atlanta is still seething that Major League Baseball stripped the All-Star Game away from their beloved city this summer.

Well, politics or not, there’s absolutely nothing MLB can do to stop Atlanta now.

Atlanta will host the World Series for the first time since 1999.

The Braves knocked off the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-2, winning the National League pennant Saturday night.

Repeat after me says Terry McAuliffe: Donald Trump was not reelected and Stacey Abrams is the governor of Georgia.

Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe claimed that Stacey Abrams should be the governor of Georgia, accusing Brian Kemp (who ran for governor while also serving as secretary of state) of having "disenfranchised" more than 1 million Georgia voters in the state's 2018 gubernatorial election.

"She would be the governor of Georgia today had the governor of Georgia not disenfranchised 1.4 million Georgia voters before the election," McAuliffe said as he introduced Abrams at a campaign event on Sunday. "That's what happened to Stacey Abrams. They took the votes away."

Genius Award Winner and Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day all wrapped into one story.

A woman accused of participating in a drive-by shooting spree the morning of Sept. 30 died last week in a local hospital from the effects of a drug overdose she suffered in jail, Santa Fe police confirmed Monday.

Officers learned during their investigation Brianna Romero, 20, died Oct. 10 at Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center, Deputy Chief Paul Joye said.

Romero was one of three people arrested in the shooting, which damaged several apartment buildings and vehicles on Jaguar Drive and led to lockdowns at Capital High and other nearby schools. She and her sister, Deavonne Romero, 23, and 16-year-old Elijah Gallegos were charged with over a dozen felonies.

After the arrests, Deavonne Romero was booked in the Santa Fe County jail, and Gallegos was sent to the San Juan County juvenile detention facility. But Brianna Romero was taken to Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center for treatment of an opioid overdose. It would be the first of two overdoses she experienced while in custody.

After her arrest around 11 a.m. Sept. 30, Brianna Romero was placed in a holding cell at the Santa Fe Police Department’s headquarters on Camino Entrada, Joye said. Just after 12:30 p.m., he said, she was found unresponsive in her cell.

Officers attempted lifesaving measures, including the administration of the anti-overdose drug naloxone, until emergency medical responders arrived, police reports say. Doctors at Presbyterian later discovered a bag of pills, which investigators suspected to be fentanyl, in a body cavity.

Romero was released from the hospital at 5:45 p.m. that day after doctors provided medical clearance for her incarceration. She was booked into the jail two hours later, records show.

The next morning, a guard found her unresponsive in her cell “approximately 20 minutes” after a previous guard check. She was taken to Presbyterian a second time and again was “revived with Narcan,” a Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office report says. But she was still suffering from cardiac events. A doctor found a bag with “clear crystals” in a body cavity.

Sadly, Murphy wins easily again by 5% points. NJ will never get better...like ever.

Virginia will be closer but not close enough - McAuliffe by 3% or perhaps 4% - all from NoVA, of course.

The Dems don't bring in Obama and then lose...that was to motivate the walking around money, meaning the cash that liberal donors supply - the benjis that get crack ho Tricksy and her pimp Huggy Bear to write out all the ballots that the Dems need to win at $1 a ballot - which I have heard from some lobbyist is the going rate.

Everyone knows that the Dems can't lost VA - the GOP isn't even sending money in or any big name GOP politicians to plump for Youngkin because that's not the deal here. VA is Dem territory - and the RNC knows it.

By the way the article is written, it appears that both the Santa Fe PD and Sheriff's Office were involved. It is normally one or the other that has primary jurisdiction. And if the decedent was in a medical facility and found to have drugs hidden in a "body cavity" nothing should stop a search of all other body cavities for additional drug stashes by medical personnel. What a sad situation.

And the SFSO is the same outfit that is investigating the Alec Baldwin shooting. Zero confidence in the SO's ability to carry out the investigation properly. Sad!

The four star thing is not in the military. Not in the military.

It is part of the commissioned core of the US public health service, a uniform service of the US government that is answerable to and part of the department of health and human services. They use military ranks as the US public health service ultimately derived from the Marine corps military medical service in the 1790s.

To get to play dress up and wear nice uniforms and get medals and ranks and benefits equivalent to the military service and all that shit but they are not part of the department of defense structure in any way shape or form.

I found a 21-year old HDD in my junkbox that had the appropriate carrier to fit the chassis. To my astonishment, it booted Win 98SE, and ran fast. But after 15 minutes, it halted with the 'truck backing up' beeping sound. I assume fan has failed, but it's not worth putting a new fan in. Next I try to resurrect two Gateway CX2720s, with somewhat more powerful CPU, and higher RAM capacity.

250 Somebody gave me three old laptops, sans HDs, last week. Today I tinkered with the Toshiba 4090XDVD: i386 Centrino single-core, 64MB ram.

Here's the deal with the AKMOME. I will set aside a week, so it can be a rolling festival. Over the next couple of weeks, I will post an email connection and collect tourist stuff for everyone, and then I will start collecting names or at least numbers. Depending on how many and how long, I will rent a yurt, or set aside some rooms locally, or something like that. Options are open at this time, but if we want to make this last a few days, more the better.

Salmon over the fire, always bacon, reindeer sausages, open bar (sort of, BYOB and pass it, dude, but we will bring local beers), we will hopefully have a well drilled and electric dropped, so bring your camper, or rent one, if you are adventurous and want to stay out on the site.

Start your planning now, folks.

There was a post by the gaffer on the Rust today which I just read. Name is Sergey Svetnoy. He claims he was standing next the woman when she was shot and was with her as she died. He blames the entire weapons dept, the armorer gal chief among them, but everyone else in the chain. Says they were not qualified and didn't know what they were doing and blames the "producers" ultimately for allowing this to go on.

I was sympathetic until the last, when he completely absolves Baldwin, saying he's a victim who will have to live with this for the rest of his life. I thought Baldwin was one of the producers. And he was the last man in the chain, and the one who pulled the trigger.

Yep, there is a full court press to absolve and protect Baldwin.

Baldwin was "the" producer, AFAIK. If the gunshot victim was the actor scheduled to be "shot" by Baldwin in the take of the scene, then maybe it could be passed off as a tragic accident. But when it's camera woman and AD who get shot, by the producer, after he blurts out, "maybe I should just shoot you!", then wanton recklessness enters the scene.

463 Late to the discussion, but I had a thought which I have not seen brought up -- has everyone who handled the gun that day been drug tested????

It looks like the Armourer is mostly responsible, but anyone in the chain of custody needs to be tested and up on charges if there is any evidence of any drugs. Just saying.

I also think Baldwin is not culpable in his role as actor, but is very culpable in his role as producer and the main person with authority on the set as the producer and star. He too needs to be drug tested.

Every time I hear the phrase "reckless discharge of a firearm" (which is a criminal charge), I think of the great country ballad, "Bubba Shot the Jukebox".

The jukebox at a honky tonk played a sad song, which made Bubba cry (he was apparently having woman trouble), so he shot the jukebox.

The Sheriff charged Bubba with "reckless discharge of a firearm", to which Bubba replied, "Reckless hell! I hit where I was aimin'!"

Unless you can prove Baldwin knew for a fact there were live rounds in the gun, and that he intended to fire live rounds at the victims, I don't think you can prove murder in a court of law.

But the facts, as so far presented, easily support a charge of manslaughter or negligent homicide.

505 gotta be at the VA in the morning for blood draws for an upcoming appointment, and some of them need to be done in the early AM, to be accurate.

plus it's likely to be pouring rain, which means traffic will suck more than usual, so getting there an back will take longer...

all of which means i need to get to bed while it's stilll Sunday.

hasta, y'all!

509 Some of you guys act like marijuana is some new thing no one's ever smoked before. Cannabinoids are not carcinogenic. Burning plant matter, of any kind, does create toxic stuff, though tobacco is particularly pernicious. Vaporizing weed, keeping the temp below 370F, cuts out a lot of that. Oral usage obviates all of it. Of course, all recreational substances should not be used when safety is important.

Eh, not necessarily arguing any of that, just saying that long term effects on a very large portion of the population with tons of other corresponding conditions using it constantly over the course of many years has not been studied real thoroughly. Unforeseen consequences and all that.

518 I am not a lawyer. This seems right to me:

459 If the gunshot victim was the actor scheduled to be "shot" by Baldwin in the take of the scene, then maybe it could be passed off as a tragic accident. But when it's camera woman and AD who get shot, by the producer, after he blurts out, "maybe I should just shoot you!", then wanton recklessness enters the scene.

520 ...using it constantly over the course of many years has not been studied real thoroughly...

Not formally, no.

Thinking back on the folks I know who used it regularly? They gradually became worse off-- personally, professionally, financially-- and the more frequently they 'used' the faster they failed. Sad.

YMMV of course.

But this is kind of my point: anecdotal. One thing even about smoking (cigarette) studies: How many other environmental factors were affecting outcomes? If cigarette smoking was the cause of so many lung cancer deaths, there was a story I remember hearing that said that the rates of lung cancer incidence were INCREASING as cigarette usage went down.

The thing about smoking cigarettes- even 10 years ago, I could tell they were affecting lung function (which was a lot of the reason I quit.) But even that experience was anecdotal. Would continued use l have lead to COPD or Cancer? I dunno. It did not on my grandma on my mom's side or my Pappaw on my Dad's- and evidently he had been sneaking cigarettes from my uncle's ash tray right up til the end.

Yeah, definite lack of major, conclusive studies.

As far as *smoking* weed goes, IMO it's generally worse (puff for puff) than cigarettes/tobacco: no filter; you 'hold it in' longer; might have other illicit drugs added if not procured "legally"

On the other hand, one doesn't usually chain-smoke joints.

I don't care if people use pot. It's simply not for me.

system

I used it and it does... Something. For me it mostly just slightly hid the back pain and added another element while making sure that I paid for new equipment, electrodes, etc.

What actually worked in my case (lower back pain) was yoga. You can go to formal classes, but what I did was check out dvds and find the moves that helped. Lots of superman type stuff in my case. I added some standing up balance ones, too because why not.

Like any exercise it isn't overnight, but it really did help.

Another option is a single visit to a physical therapist to ask for advice on how to focus on the area and a printout of exercises. Get started today with yoga, though, and be in it for the long run. There's lots of pretty young things in tight pants online to show you how to do it.
