Saturday Evening Movie Thread [Moviegique]: The Evil Dead (1981)

"The most ferociously original horror movie of 1982." — Stephen King

That quote of Stephen King's could not have come earlier than June of 1982 when John Carpenter's The Thing had just been released, which has essentially the same plot—monsters that can turn into anyone kill a group of people one by one—as well as truly ferocious (and revolutionary) special effects, but we'll cut the ole Maine schlockmeister some slack here: His glowing praise made the movie's success possible, launching the career of Sam Raimi and perhaps tangentially the Coen Brothers (who leaned on Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell for their film debut, Blood Simple).

"Here's to a perfectly nice weekend without my so-called 'friends' poking my sprained ankle with pencils."

It's possible The Boy had never seen this—as a toddler he was a huge fan of Army of Darkness, and when he was older Evil Dead II—so I was tempering, somewhat, his expectations. The acting in this film is some of the worst ever recorded, and in a charming intro by Bruce Campbell (for the 40th anniversary showing at a drive-in) he notes that his most famous work is also his worst. (My rebuttal would be that he really didn't turn in a good performance until 2002's Bubba Ho-Tep, so there was a fairly high chance of that happening anyway.) Someone asked him for advice for actors and he said something to the effect of "Do anything because you're going to suck at first."

The girls do better than the guys, and Richard DeManincor (as "Scott") does better than Bruce, but you can see the beginnings of what would become the more successfully hammy and manic performances Campbell turns in for the highly regarded Evil Dead II, which today would probably be called a "soft reboot" rather than an "incoherent sequel". (It is supposed to be a sequel, except Ash dies at the end of the first movie, and even if he hadn't died, why the hell would he take another girlfriend into a cabin in the woods?)

"Honey, if you were possessed by a demon and I had to chop your head off but later I met another girl and wanted to bring her to this cabin, would you be okay with that?"

And you can't really talk about this movie without covering the occasionally shockingly bad special effects: an Ed Wood level lightning strike on a tree (which Sam Raimi got removed from some early cuts); several composites of the moon being occluded by black smoke; the jarring stop-motion animation. Bruce Campbell made reference to George Lucas' Star Wars CGI shenanigans and basically said you won't see any of that here: All the wires are still visible, and you can see the hose pumping blood—which actually leads me to the point of all this, because I never have seen those wires and hoses. I was even looking this time.

From a 20-year-old Sam Raimi's endless well of energy, and his intuitive sense of moviemaking, we get a movie that basically dares you to not take it seriously. Some apologists have suggested that the camp moments in the movie were deliberate, to which Raimi has responded that everyone involved was deadly earnest. This movie is powered by that force: Ellen Sandweiss' brittle emotionalism after being raped by the woods; Bruce Campbell asserting that they can't bury Shelly, whom they've just hacked to pieces, because "she's our friend"; DeManincor's Scotty's decision to flee and leave the injured Linda to her fate. A single wink-wink to the audience would ruin it all.

Bros before She-Demons.

While the opening scenes of the Olds Delta 88 (a family car that's been in most of his movies) are not quite Manos: The Hands of Fate level bad, they're still the sort of rough-cut, badly overdubbed kind of thing you see in horror films all the time. The instant the car hits the rickety bridge, however, the camera transforms into a weapon, a hostile entity—literally, as it represents the Force In The Woods. Dutch angles, shots with improvised tracks (they couldn't afford a dolly), Sam Raimi hanging from the rafters by his legs to get a back-to-front shot of Campbell's head, as Ash begins to realize he's in a demonic madhouse...these were filmmakers taking their best (and probably only shot) at getting noticed.

It not only becomes easy to overlook the film's flaws, it becomes hard not to. I was not particularly a fan at the time, but I liken it today to re-viewing Mel Brooks movies: When I watch them now I see a man whose sole interest is in making me laugh, and nothing is beneath him in that task. I see in Evil Dead a passion to scare me, to win me over, to make good on the promises of the '70s exploitation horrors (which often were quite dull and almost always ploddingly pedestrian in their presentation), and a tremendous amount of care which one doesn't see in low-budget flicks that aren't "arty". The foreshadowing of the demonic peek-a-boo with Ash and Cheryl's flirtatious peek-a-boo early on; Bob Dorian reading the exact description of what's going to happen later on in the film; the Joel Coen-edited scene of Ash securing Cheryl to dismember her, which act he cannot go through with, even if it seals her fate and his; the endless dark basement where Ash gets his first (fake) scare that he realizes he has to go back into later on.

1980 Fashion To Young Women: "I'll swallow your souls!"

The rape scene is somewhat controversial even today, with Raimi claiming to regret it today. I believe this claim; Raimi seems like a rather gentle spirit who was driven to get whatever he felt he needed to on film. I hated it at the time. I had (and still have) a very low threshhold for "rape as entertainment". In retrospect, though, I think it actually adds pretty well to the horror of the situation. Nobody believes Shelly when she says the woods have attacked her, and she doesn't go into details—they wouldn't believe her. (So, if you like, it works as a metaphor for unheard victims.) It's suitably audacious and fits in with the random demonic torture that is the movie's theme.

Joel Coen was working for an editor, Edna Ruth Paul, who was from a time when movie credits were not so exhaustive. She probably deserves considerable credit here as well, given the film was originally nearly 2 hours long. I would like to see the two hour cut, but my guess it would be much, much worse.

Even Joe LoDuca's score—his first—rises above the time when cheap synth tracks and drum machines ruled the earth.

It's just one of those cases where the energy and talent exceeds well past the limitations of the budget and the constraints of the genre, and it was delightful to see it again, 40 years later, with a grouchy, jowly Bruce Campbell still grousing about Raimi and (producer Rob) Tapert poking his injured ankle with pencils to get him riled up before a scene. The Boy was much enthused.

The deer head only has a cameo in Evil Dead, but it's a major player in Evil Dead II.

Warriors was a TV movie I think with Damian Lewis ( Band of Brothers) and Ioan Gruffudd as a British army unit in Kosovo, sad and tough to watch
2nd was another well done movie Kilo 2 Bravo about a British unit in Afghanistan, a patrol gets caught in a minefield and things go bad real quick, based on a true story.

One character, a Dutchman fighting for the SS, describes to an embittered and disillusioned SS trooper why he joined the team. He did it for social justice. His family has worked hard all their lives for peanuts and it's not fair! Someone needs to use force to make the system more fair! Plus he doesn't care for the Jews.

An Army of Darkness diorama made with clay. I have all the supplies on my hobby-desk. The scale for the Raimi Oldsmobile couldn't be the same as Ash, so I would have to be subtle about him being too big to sit and drive.

sometimes copying & pasting from the post on the main page has the same issues...I always scrub the text through the linux text editor (that's "notepad" for you unfortunate souls still using a windows box)

Just watched a great ending to the Columbo!

Yeah, the darker moustache was nothing.

I now think it was in the IMDB spoilers section because it discusses the moustache being darker during the killing when the whole point of the Columbo series is that you know WHO did it -- it's about how the viewer-known murderer is caught so there's no point to it having spoilers about the murderer's identity!

80 I love the heck out of this move, as well as the remake/reboot/sequel whatever you want to call it. This is one of the few horror movies that really hit me - and I'm not a fan of the genre. He did improve on certain scenes in ED2, but also lost a bit. I really loved the part where Ash is coming unglued, the camera movements and inanimate objects, ticking clock - just brilliant stuff on a shoestring budget. And the first mention of fake Shemp! #2 was certainly more camp, and they had an extra $47 to work with.

I can't believe - it seems like I just rewatched #1 and #2, but it was last year for Halloween. Man, time flies. I'm a Bruce Campbell fan, he's terribly terrible and always fun to watch. I own all 3 of the trilogy, but never saw the TV series (Netflix can go you-know-what).

I've lived in the SF Bay Area my whole life. Many friends in HS and college were huge dead heads. I never liked the stuff. "Oh, but you really need to see them live! Their music needs to be appreciated in a spontaneous setting! The studio stuff is so lifeless..." Ok, I'll admit some of the hippy chicks were cute. So, I went. Not once, not twice, but probably half a dozen times. Even a coveted New Years Eve show - all at Winterland, their home port. Not gonna lie, I hated every moment of it. And learned to hate space-dancing hippy chicks on orange sunshine. If the band wasn't tripping balls, they were sorta competent. But the feel good 1 hour endless jams are intolerable. Somewhere there's a banner hanging in an old hippy commune that reads: 89471 Days Since Last Dark Star (you'd get it if you saw *any* show at Winterland).

I *hate* horror movies for the most part. The first Evil Dead is meant to be a horror movie, and succeeds quite well with brilliant cinematography and so many new and fresh ideas for the time. For some reason, Rami decided to do a new version of that film, and decidedly shot for camp like Army of Darkness. Even though there are some literal scene-for-scene reshoots (or even just scenes reused) it works on a different level entirely. I love both of them.

If you like Army Of Darkness, go for ED2 first. You'll find out how Ash lost his hand (seriously brilliant scenes) and how he wound up in the past. Then, for the "teens in a cabin in the woods by themselves" horrorfest, watch #1. Most funny parts are unintentional.

For a while there it seemed like all that showed up on television were test patterns and QM productions. Always nicely done, as I recall it -- watchable, not dull, well cast. But I'm bleeped if I can remember much about any of 'em.

Of these four, I've only seen "Pig" and would recommend.

"Old" is almost certainly awful. If you have a Shyamalan fetish it might be interesting on that level.

"Stillwater" looks to me like the new blackface--when Hollywood pretends it gets people who actually work for a living and believe in Jesus and what-have-you. (See "Eyes of Tammy Faye", e.g.)

"The Green Knight" I noped out on because, yeah, Devon Sawa is a fine actor but it's cultural appropriation. Which I wouldn't gaf about except it's exclusively allowed one way.

MM1 => Death Wish
MM2 => Smokey and the Bandit
MM3 => Escape from New York

(rough movie analogies)

"Evil Dead 1" is straight up horror (with accidental camp). "Evil Dead 2" is horror comedy, just tonally completely different from the earnestness of ED1. "Army of Darkness" is more or less a straight fantasy action picture.

A common backstory of those '70s exploitation horror films is that they were made by industrial filmmakers with no real filmmaking talent, combined with delusions of Hollywood stardom. That's one of the reasons I love the first three Romero Dead films. He's objectively a shitty filmmaker who made shitty films, but he had ONE great idea: the classic Romero Zombie. That idea shined through, regardless of the shitty filmmaking.

Dawn of the Dead is still one of my favorite films, but I'm under no illusions that it's good filmmaking. It's not.

I liked it fine when it came out - but have never come to worship it. There really was some gorgeous cinematography, and some interesting ideas. Vangelis score fit well and was unique for the time. But meh. Don't hate it but don't go out of my way to rewatch either. I think maybe one redeeming factor was back in the day (1982?) showing a gritty, dirty, scary and heartless dystopian future was a fresh take. Now it looks like I wish San Francisco did.

Final Cut this time. I've also seen the Director's Cut and the US release... possibly the international at some point. (Why? I have no clue why I've seen it so many times... either someone else wants to see it or I just wanted to see if I really hated it *this* time). There is no good cut of that steaming shit pile. The only good thing in it is Rutger Hauer, but that's only because I'm biased towards his work in general.

I can't believe they made a sequel and it's even WORSE. How? How is that possible?

I'm like a broken record with this series; it's one of my all-time favorites. I'm re-watching it with my family, and I just finished S1. It went from a standard procedural (with a twist) to something special very quickly; I think that after E3 it went much deeper for me. I love all the performances, and nothing is wasted. My only regret is that S5 was truncated, and it didn't flow quite the way it would have if they did 23 episodes. Still, an amazing series. Absolutely love it.

Totally underrated, I love it. Completely reeled me in. I think the only part that seemed a bit forced/unnecessary was the whole infected dick thing. Not really sure why they felt that was worth all the work for basically a payoff with a nurse towards the end. I really did come away believing it was Elvis and JFK.

I dunno, sometimes when they only have a half-season, they can really pack in the good stuff because they don't have to worry about "filler" episodes. Though filler episodes do give the showrunners the ability to fill in backstory or add details to the world...So there is a trade-off, I suppose.

None of the above.

Much of the AI is purpose driven, it must have a solution that is supposed to be computed. Sentience is not possible.

Also you get a time-travel paradox. The whole idea of Person of Interest was to predict the future so that interventions might take place. If the intervention is successful, it will go against the training data resulting in broken correlations, thus corrupting the system.

That is, if A is predicted based on parameters B...Z, and then in interdiction takes place based on this future knowledge, then the results of B..Z are altered decaying the prediction correlations.

My mother loved The Fugitive (though I suspect she was drawn in by David Janssen, whom she said looked just like the young Clark Gable). I was too young to appreciate the series then. Later I got to see episodes on our local PBS station, and was blown away by the quality storytelling and drama. The show was running on MeTV until recently, and I taped them from the cable and watched them. You're right about it still being a pleasure.

The new one is awful. Well, not so much as a movie (again, some great cinematography) but it was one of those movies I was yelling at the screen as to *why* somebody would do something so fucking stupid. So many plot holes and conveniences just to move the plot forward. I'd love to hear a Drinker critique on it - but I think it's just more low-hanging fruit. And being Hollyweird, they simply seem to have a hard on against Harrison Ford.

I was in high school when it first aired; I think I could have counted on my fingers the number of times I missed it during the four-season run. Bought the dvds immediately.

The movie version with Harrison Ford was okay for a movie, but not nearly up to the series. The filmmakers did, however, have sense enough to crib much of the sequence where Tommy Lee Jones spots Ford in the court building from an episode of the series. (But it was better done in the original tv version.)

I'd absolutely agree. I'll take the pretty but obviously fake CGI in eastern movies (or hell, an old school matte) over the modern American stuff.

As for acting, there's an old saw that Alfred Hitchcock directed "Psycho" because he wanted to prove that you could make a movie without a story, and he made "The Birds" to prove you didn't need a story OR acting.

As you said above, the first one would have been hurt by too much campy nonsense, and the main reason the second one is not hampered by it, is because it's just so damned scary otherwise. The audience NEEDED to be let up every now and then, whereas the first one, you could just absorb the horror of it all, with the cheesy effects not slowing it down at all.

There is a terrific commentary track for the first film, Raimi and... I think Campbell was there, but maybe it was Raimi's brother. It's a hoot to watch and listen to them talking about it.

I've been disappointed with "comedies" since then, with the exception of Just Go With It (itself a remake), because the dialog in most of them is sawdust. Columbo made it about How-does-he-catch-'em. The technique was old even then -- it was pioneered if not invented by a writer named R. Austin Freeman before WWI.

If you want a mystery that focuses on "how it could be done," check out the novels of John Dickson Carr, and the short-lived TV series Banacek.

King's comments have nudged me toward a number of things I might have missed otherwise -- EVIL DEAD, for instance, and an oddball little monster movie called THE BOOGENS, and others. Don't care for his politics, but some of his books are long-time favorites of mine, and the man is generous with praise where he thinks it's due. If you're looking for a good source of recommendations of horror books, films, and tv, you could do a lot worse than getting a copy of King's DANSE MACABRE.

Cancelling Brisco was Fox's greatest programming mistake.

It was and is a classic.

I own the DVD set and enjoy it to this day.

The Galactic Whirlpool (I think that was the title) by Gerrod is my favorite Star Trek novel. The idea that they built giant orbiting power stations and then they turned it into a generation ship and the Enterprise catches up to it after all this time. Captured my imagination.

Then I read the fuzzy caterpillar books. Do not recommend.

I do remember the unfortunate (to my mind) infection Heinlein left us with: That all SF writers think they're master philosophers.

His concept of Down's was uncomfortable for me.

307 Never have much interest in old style horror. I'm more into SciFi type horror for monsters.

Reg horror is is just really silly in the assumptions made and it stretches by suspend disbelief too far. We've lived with ourselves for too long for there to be much we don't know about.

Now the Universe is a large place and there there is much unknown and much possible that we have no clue could exist.

308 First edition has the gimmicky cover where you can spin a wheel to find an episode. To have one with a functioning wheel these many years later would be a not so small miracle.
