Gun Thread: Headed to Texas Edition!

Handguns
Friday 22nd, 11am - 4pm. The program will cover range safety and the basics of a proper handgun stance, grip, sight alignment and trigger discipline, and will repeat throughout the day. There will also be targets available for those who want to try a variety of available weapons. You are welcome and encouraged to bring your favorite firearm if you like, and please consider bringing a little extra ammo to share since a big part of the fun is the ability to try other Moron's weapons. Saturday 23rd, 11am - 4pm. Open range with the handgun presentation repeating throughout the day. Rifles
Friday 22nd, 8am - 4pm. We start at 8am with a presentation on mid-range shooting concepts conducted in a classroom setting on the carport. Please bring a pencil, copy of the syllabus and pocket calculator if you are interested in participating. The topics covered include range safety, interior and exterior ballistics, practical exercises in computing firing solutions, and working with a coach or spotter. The presentation usually lasts until lunch, after which we will head to the range and engage targets from 50 to 700 yards. There will be separate targets setup for plinking at close range if that's what you like to do. Saturday 23rd, 8:30am - 2pm or thereabouts. Open range. If you want to shoot, get there early as most of us want to head up to the main event and join the party around lunchtime. I will be available until around noon on the range to work with shooters, tell funny jokes, and generally act like a buffoon. Important note In past years, we have tried to limit the size of the rifle class by having people register, and this year we are simply welcoming anyone who would like to attend. If you want to come and simply observe, you're absolutely welcome to do that too. Please be at the ranch by 7:45am Friday, as the presentation begins at 8am sharp. If you would like to shoot, bring a rifle and ammo. It can be any reasonable caliber, but please, no AP or incendiary ammo of any sort. I will also bring a couple of my practice guns and a very limited supply of ammo for those. You can improve your chances of getting a turn with one of them by bringing either .308 Winchester (168gr and up) or 5.56x45mm (70gr and up) ammo.
First is a 1994-95 .38 Colt Detective Special (last of the breed) at 10 yards w/ 130 grain FMJ. Target shows the results of a mix of aimed and rapid fire. Obviously, rapid fire isn't my thing to do with a snubbie at 10 yards.
Next is the HK SP5. Blue target is at 10 yards with a mix of aimed shots and double taps. Next target is at 20 yards, again a mix of aimed shots and rapid double taps. Ammo is 124 grain 9mm +P with frangible flat nosed ammo. Any fails here are on the shooter, not the weapon. The SP5 has the SB Tactical Brace and MP5 diopter sights replacing the end cap and notched rear sight the SP5 originally shipped with. This is one of the best pistol caliber carbines available, but its also got the highest price if one sees what these are going for on Gun Broker.

I should add that it's a 6-inch barrel .22 LR with target sights, which is what I was looking for. It's got a loading gate, extractor rod, etc., but no half-cock.
This puzzled me, but I figured it may have broken. I put some dummy rounds in it for my wife to take a try and she was the one who decided to pull the trigger with the hammer down and make it go click.
Took it to the range, need to adjust the sights and I even put .22 short through it and it was a hoot.

I've used Greek military surplus 30-06 ammo from that era made for the Garand. It was completely reliable and decently accurate. It can also be reloaded. I imagine the Turkish stuff would be fine.
Note: Make sure the bullet size and pressure is correct for the Garand if that is what you will be shooting.

Mrs. Leggy and I were in Boston this past week, visiting the Grandkids. We've made the drive from Indy to Boston and back many times and have always wanted to visit the Springfield National Armory National Historic Site. Today, we did! If you haven't been, it is a must see.
Many M1 Garlands on display and much, much more. We spent about 90 minutes there and could have stayed 3 hours and more!

Some day want to get to the Springfield Armory historic site. I fear we're at the stage, nationally, that non-idiots need to go in and remove that site and all its artifacts, put them in America somewhere, where they won't be Bamiyan Buddha'd by the cretinous massholes (who have their counterparts, in disastrous numbers, in most of the country, not picking on MA).
Sort of like countries being invaded by the Germans hiding, or evacuating (as with gold in a few European countries, to the UK) precious art and artifacts. But with fewer Stuka attacks.

I used to shoot hard drives to destroy them.
I thought it would be interesting to shoot a 3.5 inch hard drive with my 243, using a 75 grain hollow point slug moving at about 3400 fps, Probably still better than 3000 fps when it hit the hard drive.
I expected the bullet to explode when it hit the hard drive, but, to my surprise, it just poked a neat little 6mm hole through the platters.

My pathetic memory vaguely recalls some really cool and well done holiday "wreath" made of cartridges (?). Something like that. But never garlands (though those would be pretty easy with cartridge cases).
Related, my 3-caliber cigar punch set seems to work well. 30-06, 38 special, and 45 Colt cases, mouths chamfered to an edge. Drilled out the primer pockets to facilitate clearing tobacco plugs out of 'em. Used the 45 Colt on the Camacho (ring gauge 60) today - perfect.

Not true. AZ has them all winter long. When I first moved here there was a car ahead of us, fast lane, in town, 3 lane freeway, that didn't look right. I got over to the 'slow' lane and went on by.
They were backing up to get to the offramp they had missed. (way before cell phones so we couldn't warn anyone.)

Shootin' match yesterday, handgun, mixture of paper and steel. A bit better/more rounds than has become the norm (though still no Rube Goldberg moving targets actuated by falling steel, as used to be common). Used the Springfield XD9, considering how little I've shot it lately, not too bad.
Several of the guys have very high-end and heavily customized guns (serious recreational competitors, go to regional matches, etc), but I'll remain in my "fix the shooter/not the gun" mode - of course it would be nice if I'd get around to fixing the shooter with more practice.
On stages with movement I also keep a strictly practical, as opposed to competitive (time) approach, so I use cover and always move while shooting when that's applicable. Much harder, more fun.

A note on what I said last week, had to inventory safes, go through house for missing armaments, and check off serials, some were missing so had to find out about those. Turned out they were loaners and gifted already. So, if you are getting up in years, take notes about where your firearms are as stuff can disappear and this can cause disappointment if not known. Also follow state and federal laws regarding transfers.
Safety reminder, when clearing a safe, make double sure to be careful and check each firearm as it comes out for being loaded. Follow the firearm safety rules when taking out arms from the safe. Taking shotguns out of safes without knowing if they are loaded is not particularly fun as many shotguns are not drop safe. Ditto for many older handguns and some rifles. Found a Ruger P89 cocked which I gingerly opened the slide to find nothing in the chamber.

Ed L does your clone require +P, or at least fairly hot, 9mm to function? I'd read that "NATO"-designated 9mm (I have a box somewhere) was hotter precisely to work in sub-machine guns. I don't mean the NATO cross on the headstamp, but actual "NATO" in the ammo label.

A couple of MoMe questions. First, is anyone interested in doing a sort of tailgate swap meet? I have a couple pounds of powder that I don't need and I might even be convinced to loosen my steely grasp on a half-carton of Federal GM210M and/or GM150M.
Second, what happens to the collected brass? I would be willing to take it home, sort it, divy it up among whoever wants some, and mail it.

Keeps your eyes open for a Springfield SAR-3's or overstamped 3 with an 8.
Springfield brought them in from Greece back in the day made on actual H&K machines in Greece.
Very collectible and still a little cheaper than an H&K 91 and basically the same thing.
Stay away from the SAR-8's.....different receiver (aluminum?) but they look the same. SAR-8's will not have "Made In Greece" stamped on them.
I like PTR.....quality rifles and worth the money.

whig I follow a more total safety regimen wherein no live round is ever chambered away from the firing line (range, desert, wherever). "Home defense" tools are one rack away from being ready, and of course revolvers (sometimes the bedside gub) have all their chambers loaded. But, revolvers.

Lucked out today. Someone I know found a box of black English flints he got from Dixie Gun Works decades ago. He no longer uses flintlocks so I was able to get about 60 flints for a few bucks. These are smaller than I use in my rifles but should be fine in the pistols. Considering they cost 2 to 3 dollars apiece these days, it feels like I won a lottery. This is basically a lifetime supply.

Listen; if someone is smart enough and persistent enough, they will manage to break into and steal your firearms. Don't care what it's in or where.
That said, they will have a time limit that they may be aware of and will be forced to move on if your firearms are hidden well and/or well protected from theft as in difficult to move. You can use safes, locking cables, bolts, cages, traps, alarms bells. Whatever to make them less likely to persist in your case due to noise or injury or inability to access. I got with about 50% difficult to find and 50% locked down in some way.

111, I actually keep semi autos for home defense loaded in a fast access handgun safe but all of them have at least two safeties involved whether grip and trigger, safety and trigger, etc. And the models I have are drop safe. Longarms are in loader safe with nothing in the chamber but available at short notice.
But, I was clearing someone else's safe and noting serials etc., condition, pix, etc. for estate purposes. This person had memory problems and people had borrowed and returned some of the firearms so clearing the safe was an adventure.

Range report: decided to try out some different recoil mitigation techniques this morning at ESS so I brought along the .22LR AR (as usual) and a Beretta 92FS outfitted with a .22LR conversion kit.
After 50 rounds on each I came away pretty satisfied. Still need to practice more, was pulling to the left with the rifle and the pistol grouping had a few flyers, but overall it was a good day.

Taurus, which owns Heritage now, also has a model with both a .22 LR and a .22 WMR (.22 Magnum) cylinders that you can shoot both cartridges and it is only slightly higher than the .22 LR only. Dunno if you can buy the .22 WMR cylinder separately. A bit suboptimal on accuracy for .22 WMR but accurate enough at close range.
Their revolvers even have a safety so decent as a first handgun for training people.

Another vote for the Heritage Rough Rider. Probably the best value for 22lr fun shooting. (Besides, I like single action revolvers.) And for under 200 bucks you can get the model with the extra 22 mag cylinder.

If you are willing to accept a shorter barrel length and non-adjustable sights, you can get into something for little over $100. Heritage Arms has a "Barkeep" that's stupid cheap.

Speaking of firearm storage, the firearms that I have been inventorying were stored for over two years with RIG grease covering the outside metal surfaces and inside the bore and chamber. Then the firearms were stored inside sealed plastic anticorrosion bags bought off Amazon. No sign of rust or deterioration despite one of the safes being in non airconditioned space.

And more importantly, one of the safes that I have been checking off the firearms in has Chinese drywall installed as its fire walls with all its corrosive nature (contains anaerobic bacteria generating hydrogen sulfide gas) and not a bit of the firearms inside have been harmed. Course, also have zerust cartridges in that safe as well.
Be careful buying a used firearm safe of a certain vintage--when the big box stores quit buying Chinese drywall due to its corrosion of things like copper pipes and other metals, they sold some to gun safe manufacturers with bad consequences.

If we're talking .22 semi-auto pistols, the S&W M&P 22 is nice, in my experience. Handling/ergos very much typical of larger caliber semis. Shoots about as accurately as you'd expect from a 22 semi. Have fed it or 6 kinds of ammo, only the occasional (probably inevitable) occasional failure to eject/failure to feed - but very occasional.

I like my Heritage Rough Rider too!! I'm trying out my prototype bullet catcher at the range in the morning and I figured out how to make my chronograph work indoors. Very shortly I hope to be able to do load development at home. I've always wanted to make one bullet, shoot it over the chrono, inspect my brass and go from there. Everybody have a great time at the Mo-Me, I know you'll have a blast.

Whig, any advice for firearm related leather goods (slings, holsters, etc.), especially older ones? Picked up a 1943 Colt M1911A1 a while back that came w/ a full set of web gear, including a holster and ammo pouches. I know how to clean and lube the pistol, but I'm a bit lost regarding the leather holster. I came in during the last days of issued leather holsters and these were treated as "semi-expendable" (i.e. turn in and get another if it wears out), but a vintage holster doesn't fall into that category.

168 Ed L. Whatever you do, do not use neatsfoot oil. Start with brushing off dirt with a soft bristle brush, then saddlesoap and damp sponge. From there apply your conditioning etc. Galco Gunleather makes appropriate cleaners and conditioning products which you can buy from Amazon or other places.

Weasel! Thanks for the thread. Went to the range today with my H&KVP9SK. Everything went really well. Enjoying my Mantis device. A neighbor had a new gun, he was shooting consistently low and left. Using the Mantis we got some ideas about what he should do differently.

176 rhomboid, try one of your local gunstores that handles reloading supplies. Where I am right now has one that has shelves full of powder of different sorts including the 8 lb jugs. No primers though. I am seeing a lot more powder out there but you have to move in a day or so to buy it and then it is gone. Bullets are now in good supply, brass in some calibers is still constrained.
During one of the shortages, the owner of a local gun store explained that he expected it around the 2008 election and thus booked orders for powder at the shotshow for the following year. Thus, he kept in supply of reloading and ammo supplies while others including the big box retailers did not.

I live alone. I have a pistol for self defense if someone forces their way into my dwelling. It makes no sense for it to be locked in a safe, with a trigger lock and the ammo locked away in a separate location. Why even own a gun.

Zerust also makes vapor capsules for safes, etc. and this releases anti corrosion vapors over time into the enclosed container. I can recommend both except possibly in marine or coastal areas. In those areas, I would combine protections.
Another recommendation is Sentry Solutions Tuf-Glide dry lubricant for items like gun magazines after you clean them out.

191 Nurse, I agree with your strategy. I do the same thing in keeping my home defense pistols loaded except keep mine in a fast access gunsafe. When I carry, I have it loaded as well.
The only caveat is if I had a weapon that was not drop safe or longarms in a storage rack for use.

Schmeissers were named after the firearms designer even in the 2nd WW where Schmeisser had nothing much to do with the MP 40 design.

I did buy a few 1-lb'ers of H110, directly from Hodgon, because 1) it's the only powder where there's any chance of near-term problem 2) I just happened to check availability at their site while looking up some load data. I do only the original load for the M1 carbine (110g FMJ and H110, xxg-xxg), and it's a household/friends going shooting favorite. Don't want to run short on that ammo.
No significant retail availability, generally, in my area. Only know of one store that has much in the way of reloading supplies/gear.

Not true. AZ has them all winter long. When I first moved here there was a car ahead of us, fast lane, in town, 3 lane freeway, that didn't look right. I got over to the 'slow' lane and went on by.
They were backing up to get to the offramp they had missed. (way before cell phones so we couldn't warn anyone.)

For those with less patience to restore an old oil finished rifle, LinSpeed sold by Brownells applies quickly and dries quickly in thin coats.
Make sure though you dispose of linseed or other oil turpentine, etc. soaked materials properly as they can spontaneously combust if not handled right.

Whig, the web gear doesn't smell that bad. It smells better than the stuff I got issued at ROTC Advanced Camp. I think I'll leave it alone. All of this is in the safe, which comes w/ a dehumidifer. I've heard that if an old wooden rifle stock is in decent shape already, using furniture polish is OK because these things used furniture grade walnut (mostly). Any truth to that? I don't have any restoration jobs for wood stocks (at least not yet) in the works.

About the .22 revolvers. I bought 2 of the Heritage Rough Riders (blemished) for less than $200. Gave one to my son. Each came with a second cylinder chambered in .22 WMR. I taught my 13yo grandson to shoot with the one I kept. Teaches them a lot about firearms in one gun.
I also have a Ruger SR22 with a suppressor for "nighttime" intruders of the trash Panda variety. Or other intruders the 870 would be inappropriate for.

On a polyurethane protected stock, furniture polish would be fine but some might have materials affecting bluing or color case hardening.

Basically the linseed oxidizes over time to form polymers that protect and seal the stock. BTW, a warning, never refinish Japanese lacquer including Arisaka Stocks without respiratory equipment. They used poison sumac as a base for their stock finish and this becomes aerosoled when sanded. You do NOT want to breath this.
You can tell it exists on an Arisaka stock as it looks like a crude polyurethane or crummy varnish finish.

For cleaning an old moldy wooden stock, turpentine and mineral spirits work fine. Get the odorless mineral spirits btw as the other stuff is recycled usually.

OrangeEnt, I have heard that the Buckmark is a very nice .22 LR semi auto and very accurage. Easier to take down for cleaning than the comparable Rugers (dunno about the newest one).

Lin-duh - For me at least, I interpret Ro 13 thus - kings and magistrates rule by consent of God. So then, believers who render obedience to governing authorities are obeying the one who is highest in command (Our Lord). However, I believe that rulers, in this case Caesar, has the responsibility to make just laws. Caesar is not entitled to obedience when he rules immorally.

Ed. L. a light application probably would not hurt it but the linseed actually soaks in and then hardens the surface protecting it from bumps and scratches as it oxidizes. Where the synthetic type oils hurt wood firearms the most is in the receiver area. On a wood stocked rifle that is used frequently, it is wise to demount the action and treat the interior wood surrounding the receiver with linseed or tung. One, it prevents the wood from drying out and cracking under recoil, two, it prevents gun oils from penetrating the wood and making it mushy. A common source of breakage of old military stocks is around its recoil lug in the stock where the wood gets dry or it gets mushy from absorbing too much oil. A similar place is the back of the tang where the old stocks often split or chip.
The older the wood, the more likely that it is dry inside and prone to cracking under recoil unless treated.

However, if you do want to seal the surface of both wood and metal on a treasured firearm, Renaissance Wax is what museums and firearm collectors use to protect them after applying whatever finish you choose to use. It is always easier to protect against cracking a wood stock than repairing one that is.

Mineral spirits are my go-to for cleaning old gun furniture. Did a very nice job on all the M1s (both sizes). Just a mild rub-down, doesn't remove any interesting features or "seasoning", in my experience.

It's funny to me that Christians insist that Paul must have been right because he's Paul and the letter is right there in the Bible. Have you ever considered that Paul's letter to the Romans is included precisely because Paul was wrong: he preached obedience and nonetheless was executed? Sort of like how modern Christians can't see Job as a criticism of the theology of the historical books of the Bible (bad things happen because of people's disobedience to God) even though at least some Jews have advocated that understanding. Taking the Bible in it's most literal, concrete sense seems questionable to me. Truth can be conveyed in a lot of ways. At any rate, I don't intend to defer to Caesar. If that gets me in trouble with El Jefe, I'll take my punishment.

I would disagree; I would say the lesson of Paul, and of most of the prophets and Jesus himself is that doing the right thing, and faithfully and honestly serving God to the utmost will very often lead to Suffering and Death in this world. And that's one of the big reasons why the Health and Wealth preachers are so theologically wrong.

That's essentially the theology of self-gassing Jews in my opinion. Let's put some meat on the bones: current Caesar wants you to be vaccinated. Yet lots of Christians insist they don't want it. Why do Christians get to disobey? It's not as if the religious objections are anything other than a pretext.

I think so. No one began opposing this from abstract theological considerations or principles. We spent months and months arguing the merits of the vaccine. When people lost that argument in some jurisdictions, then came the religious objections. From people who have been vaccinated for all sorts of things. They don't object to vaccines. They object to this one on medical grounds. I have no problem with people invoking religion to oppose the vaccine, but I'm not obligated to pretend people fervently believe that Jesus doesn't want them to get the jab either.

in the end, I don't think the "obey Caesar" crowd believes what it says. Because whenever you confront them with some disobedience on their part (like not wearing masks or getting the jab, as Caesar has decreed), they come up with some reason why disobedience is okay under these particular circumstances. Confront a habitual speeder with "obey Caesar" and you'll just get a homily about how Jesus can't drive 55.
