The Morning Report – 10/15/2021

Good Morning all. The incomparable J.J. Sefton is going to be out of pocket for a few days, which is a good opportunity for all of us to appreciate just how amazing his daily report and link-alanche is. He puts out the best aggregation of links in the conservative blogosphere. I don’t know how he does it, but I sure am grateful. He won’t be away long, so don’t touch that dial.

In the meantime, here are a few things going on:

The same people who shuttered “non-essential” businesses and locked down the economy are now coming for your single-family home.

NYT Suburbia.JPG

Having eradicated so much liberty under Covid, you can bet that the left feels confident they can forcibly re-shape our housing habits. These words from the NY Times are honest, but chilling: “But the process will be difficult…”

Pol Pot smiles. I think he’d say the process wasn’t that difficult, just messy.

*****

In a Kurt Schlicter column linked by J.J. this past Tuesday there was this great quote:

“There is no conservative principle worth honoring that makes us less free. I find the notion that we are somehow morally obligated to accept serfdom because the entity exercising mastery over us has articles of incorporation instead of a flag to be baffling.”

Liberty is about liberty. There is no principle that requires free people to surrender their liberty, be it to a government, a religion, or a cartel of monopoly businesses.

Along those lines, “Safety-ism,” combined with panic, and mixed together with an inability to understand probability and risk, will lead us to a world of subservience.

--------------------

Jesse Kelly - Panic - 2.JPG

--------------------

Mollie - Masks - bicycles.JPG

--------------------

In my former neighborhood in Austin (my wife and I have since decamped to a politically conservative area), I would constantly see young parents pushing or jogging their children in strollers, on the asphalt of fairly busy streets, with their backs to oncoming traffic. (Even when there was a sidewalk!) Plus, they usually had ear buds in. These are the same people who will not let non-organic food touch their children’s lips, and who wouldn’t drive one block in their car without their children strapped into their car seats. Such people are not capable of properly assessing risk for themselves, yet these types of people constitute our ruling class.

*****

Although I’ve quit caring about pro football since the NFL embraced on-field anti-American tantrums, the inevitable abolition of football due to safety-ism is going to cost a lot of lives – a heck of a lot more lives than the very rare on-field deaths.

Teenage boys and young men (of all races, and throughout human history) are aggressive, competitive, sometimes violent, and tend to gather in packs of their peers. That is why they make great soldiers and athletes when their energy is harnessed into a team effort, led by a responsible older male.

Football is a pressure release valve for young men, while also teaching them so many lessons about discipline, teamwork, sacrifice, leadership, etc. Misguided safety-ism has football in its crosshairs. We’ll regret its loss when it’s gone.

*****

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is all over Twitter and Social Media advocating for left-wing causes, condemning America for being racist, and in his spare time, deplatforming Twitter’s competitors. It was Jassy who made the decision to deplatform Parler.

But even though he is trying to inflict AOC-friendly politics on the rest of America, he has suddenly realized that it’s hard to live in a city that fully embraces the lunacy that he advocates for.

Amazon CEO, citing ‘rougher’ patch with Seattle, looks to ’burbs

86% of Amazon political contributions in 2020 went to Democrats. Pretty much 100% of contributions from its top executives went to Biden, the DNC, and other leftists. My condolences to whatever Seattle town has the misfortune of becoming Amazon’s new home.

*****

Here’s something uplifting to sign off with. Thanks to the leadership of our best and brightest, we can no longer even harvest our food if China and Taiwan can’t – or won’t – supply us the semiconductors that tractors now need to function. Great job, smart people!

'Desperate for tires.' Components shortage roils U.S. harvest

Manufacturing meltdowns are hitting the U.S. heartland, as the semiconductor shortages that have plagued equipment makers for months expand into other components. Supply chain woes now pose a threat to the U.S. food supply and farmers' ability to get crops out of fields.

See y’all next week.

33 Mornin' Horde!

First world problem - I discovered recently that a new season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine had come out back in August (oddly, hulu didn't notify me of this). We enjoyed the show through the first 7 seasons, and I was looking forward to the 8th.

I stopped watching after two episodes. Apparently, they threw out the scripts they had, and wrote new "woke" scripts. The first episode was so heavy-handed I could barely sit through it. It was about the unfunniest episode of a comedy I'd ever seen. It should have had the "very special episode" disclaimer.

Rather a disappointment...

To borrow from Lawdog, the following should happen.
1. The head of every single government agency should point to the exact phrase in the Constitution. If they can't, the agency ceases to exist and their budget gets redistributed.
2. If such a phrase is found, the head of the agency needs to justify why they should be allowed to stay on the job.

Posted by: SturmToddler (8D42x) at October 15, 2021 06:55 AM (8D42x)

57 The NYT screenshot is very telling, not only for what it says and implies bit also for how *old* the concept is.

The NYT headline makes it clear: single-family housing is bad for our grand social engineering schemes, yet you regressives like it and thus you, not the plan, is the problem. You need to change and get over yourselves to accept our housing enlightenment.

This is oddly reminiscent of a video clip I saw from British parliament. It was from, I think, the 70s. The slums in Britain's housing projects were becoming catastrophic and there was finally discussion of tearing down the tower blocks because they had become an unmitigated failure. Nobody liked them, they blighted the cities, they were dens of crime and violence and the expanded human misery. Some MP said, "Whenever we asked people what they wanted - houses or tower blocks - the vast majority of people always said they wanted houses. So what did the councils do? We gave them tower blocks instead, ruined their neighborhoods, and made them miserable. They need to be torn down and replaced with houses."

This isn't new. This form of town-destroying, depressing arrogance has been with us since the War.

61 Football is a pressure release valve for young men, while also teaching them so many lessons about discipline, teamwork, sacrifice, leadership, etc. Misguided safety-ism has football in its crosshairs. We'll regret its loss when it's gone.

Organized sports in general, but especially football, has saved lives. There are countless stories from retired NFL veterans stating they were heading down a wrong path in life before their parent(s) got them involved in football.

Unfortunately, the use of getting young men involved in organized sports to change their life path has been corrupted long before safety-ism. Organized football, from at least the high school level on up, has become a business. As such, instead of teaching young men lessons about discipline, teamwork, sacrifice, leadership, etc., many programs are teaching young men that so long as you are skilled at football, you can do no wrong. Countless examples of athletes breaking the rules or breaking laws and not being punished, because the coach needs them on the field.

That lesson is learned in HS and then the young men go to college and NFL and think they can do whatever they want without consequences.

I have already solved the problem of covetous lefties envying my small single-family home: It's a "detached apartment." I made up the description after some friends and I figured out we could fit two of my houses into their apartment.

Suburbanites enjoy their racist, planet-destroying homes, but they'll love their green-spaced detached apartments just as much.

Ehhh, I dunno about that. Engine-management electronics (as opposed to all of the other whiz-bangs) did a tremendous amount of good. Reliability is extremely high. Coil-on-plug is a bit of a pain in the ass sometimes, but it works extremely well in my experience.

But as with everything, "if this was good, more would be better" and eventually it becomes a nightmare. I think the sweet spot for all of this was probably the late 90s to early aughts. You had electronic engine controls that were simple and reliable, onboard diagnostics that made repairs much easier without adding gigantic tooling expenses, and not so much high-tech fuckery that a single bad circuit ruins the car or you end up waiting on pallets of specialized processors to assemble things.

Next few days will be spent blaming it on Trump, the unvaxed, racism and global warming. Also, tell us it isn't happening very much, just a few isolated cases and the regime experts are hard at work to save Christmas.

81 Teenage boys and young men (of all races, and throughout human history) are aggressive, competitive, sometimes violent, and tend to gather in packs of their peers. That is why they make great soldiers and athletes when their energy is harnessed into a team effort, led by a responsible older male.

The elites have been surprisingly open about the fact that they want to reduce the world's population...significantly. They will use this as another means to create gangs to get rid of people and enforce compliance.

82 work out in my neighborhood before the sun comes up. But I wear a light-colored shirt, I don't have earplugs inserted, I walk or trot against traffic (which is sparse at that hour). And if I am going with traffic, I keep an eye out for headlights coming up behind me. How hard can it be?

Yeah. Most of my neighbors are pretty good about this. When light is low, most of them wear something high-viz - usually reflective shoes or a shirt with a reflective stripe. It makes a *huge* difference. I can see those guys from much further away than the handful that don't. Improving your visibility improves your safety pretty dramatically.

Wanna see how much housing as increased in your area? Do the Classic Math. Use the rules that would have been required in the late 90s for most borrowers:
- 20% down
- House is ideally 3x your income, can be pushed to 4x.
- No more than 28% of your gross income on mortgage payments
- No more than 35% of your gross income on all debt payments

How much house could you afford using the traditional, safe, reliable rules? Now how much do houses in your area actually cost?

The China infiltration may go back to Clinton (multipolarity worked out great for China) or even to Nixon (or maybe he wanted to keep Russia in check via China?) ... but at this point China is calling a lot of shots, like softening up our males (useful for weakening our military) plus maybe Biden/Milley are directly working for China?.

But behind the scenes, the prime mover (imo) is still the globalist elites, who plan to own the world. Middle class profits from BigCorp and BigTech have been huge since 1980, but dwarfed in comparison to the oligarch riches. The NWO Build Back Better team runs most of Western Civ countries ... I'm betting they have a plan for dealing with China ... after the deplorables are controlled.

131 This isn't new. This form of town-destroying, depressing arrogance has been with us since the War.

Housing projects and apartments, etc. strike me as desirable for the elites, because it allows them to have control over the masses. Same thing with owning a home in an area where there are home owner's association requirements. Owning one's own home is a form of independence. Living in a project or an apartment or even with the requirements of a HOA, it means that rules can be set for each of those conditions to control everyone in those situations.

i.e. people living in an apartment complex, they all have to follow the rules of the landlord of the complex. Government can set a rule for all landlords and then the landlord will force that rule on every renter in their complex.

Government does not have that power over those who own their own homes. So that's my first thought when reading about this: it's about control. Just as is pretty much every action being taken by governments lately. Nothing is being done to try to improve the lives of people, it's all about increasing government control over people's lives.

Pfft, we all know by now. They will be exempt. Their neighborhoods. Select areas. Just like with everything else these b*stards do or try to do. They don't subject themselves to what they impose on others. And that goes for their friends and benefactors as well.

On that note, I think we're quickly reaching a point where these hard leftist schemes will cause an immense uproar of anger. The kind that starts the beginning of the end of their arrogant plans to mold society to their liking. You can only push people so far, and taking away single family homes is not going to sit well with even the densest among us. I think I'm going to invest in some pike futures.

For the first time ever reading and mathematics scores for 13 year old fell during that period. The very fundamentals that underlies our education system are abysmal failures.

There is no excuse for this other then teachers, school boards and those creating curriculum have failed miserably. They are incompetent and not focused on actual education. partially, this is due to the pussification of sports. hear me out.

when i was playing youth hockey, checking began at the squirt/peewee level. so we were 10 -ish. you learned very quickly, and were TAUGHT, to keep your head up, and how to hit, and how to TAKE a hit.

now they don't start until 14 or 16 and it's a world of difference. the bodies are bigger, the kids are USED to skating with their heads down, and they never learned HOW to receive a hit. i think it's led to a lot of the problems we see now.

___________

I read some of Shatner's comments yesterday, but didn't see anything like that. He was tearful after the flight, saying that it had been beautiful to see the earth from space, and he said it was very moving and he hoped he'd never forget the experience.

One article said:

Shatner noted that after seeing Earth from a distance, he was struck by its "vulnerability" and briefly touched on the notion of keeping our air and atmosphere clean. "But that's a whole other conversation."

I don't think wanting to keep the planet and air clean necessarily means that he buys into the whole "global warming" scam. Almost everybody wants to keep pollution under control, and none of us wants to destroy or harm the earth.

337 ATTN: NJ MORONS-

The church I serve had a program last night on the bill euphemistically titled "reproductive freedom" SB3030A48848. What it actually means is the right to abortion to the 9th month. The bill will allow anyone from anywhere else to come to NJ for an abortion, and our taxes will pay for it. NJ will already become more of a haven for sex traffickers who bring underage and older women here, film them being raped by numerous men a night and then sell the films online. Men pay extra if they don't have to wear a condom, and if they women get pregnant-no questions asked, It will also invalidate the 1974 conscience clause which protected the right of health care workers not to assist at an abortion,

More details here, the names of the sponsors of the Bill and what you can do to help defeat it:

There's not enough ice, especially because the northern ice doesn't count. Most of the arctic ice is floating, and "ice floating in water" has the same volume as "water remaining when ice melts." Seawater is saline and that changes things a bit, but not much. I'd be much more worried about wild dilution and changes in salinity than I would be about sea level rise if the northern ice all melted.

Antarctica is another story, though, of course.

Doesn't really make sense for a person to be in or out of a pocket, so the derivation would be interesting.

388 Football is a pressure release valve for young men, while also teaching them so many lessons about discipline, teamwork, sacrifice, leadership, etc. Misguided safety-ism has football in its crosshairs. We'll regret its loss when it's gone.

-----

This is very true for me and many others I knew. I had SERIOUS ANGER issues as a boy and young man, and having football as an outlet was beneficial in a number of ways -- not least of which was having surrogate father role models that I desperately needed and from whom I learned to become a man.

In a society where half of children are born out of wedlock and fathers are absent/de-valued? This will only exacerbate the disaster we're already witnessing in our man-bunned, soiboi-ized young males who shake hands like cold, limp-wristed fish ...

It's a game that requires you to play more than just on your HS team, you have to play tournament golf all over the place, in many different states in order to get a ranking, a ranking you will need to play on most college golf programs. Was Shatner already a lefty when it comes to man-caused "climate change" or was this a condition of allowing him to go to space... that he would have to give some kind of sob story about "man destroying the planet"?

Congrats! That said, I still worry about the "testing requirements". Considering the PCR test does not work (yet the FDA and CDC are not going to stop using it until DEC 31 2021 for some reason) and there are a ridiculous amount of cases of false positives. So depending on the post-"positive test result" protocol, I am just as worried about "COVID-19 testing" as forced "vaccination", depending on what is the post-test protocol. Forced 14-day quarantine? Forced doctor visit to get treatment?

Has anyone here been going through the "COVID-19 testing" process at their place of employment? Is there any post-"positive test result" protocol that is enforced?

All I need is a well-built whatever that perform it's defined job and doesn't break down.
Too much complication leads to too many weak breakdown points and extraneous replacement and nuisance.

Also, and more importantly, we absolutely do not need a national smart grid linking all electricity together and putting under control of Our Betters.
We need a very basic, very simple, redundant, well-shielded Dumb Grid. That all but impervious to breakdown or takeover or harm from everything including tyrannical politicians and solar flares.
Dumb is the New Smart. Come on, American Industry. If you build it, they will buy.

518 I loved football through high school but lo those many years ago it was still mostly a game. you could do other things (other sports, debate, whatever) in the offseason. Now if you play at a most high schools in larger classifications it's year round - kids need to be kids sometimes too.
Posted by: Too Bad Costa Rica Sucks at October 15, 2021 08:24 AM (QZ/dC)

i would see that in soccer when i reffed, and it's prevalent in most sports now. one sport only and it's pretty much year round from age 6 or 8. no wonder the kids tend to give up by the end of HS.

when i was a kid - old man rant to follow - i played 4 sports officially and then there was the free time where we played pick up, pretty much everything. i think it was a LOT better for me as a hockey player than had i been exclusively hockey year round.

...I've been saying "safety-nazis". I don't know if I coined it myself or heard it and repeated it but I recognized early on a certain type of people...

Back in my time doing research at DuPont, the technical assistants would advise leaving one or two obvious infractions of the safety rules in plain sight so that the safety nazi in the inspection team could slake his or her thirst to write up the lab for something amiss. I ignored their advice once, went for perfection, and lived to regret the error because the safety nazi of all safety nazis scoured the lab to find something and pounced(!) upon a flaw in the safety eyewashes that took weeks to correct.

521 "And single family homes are just mini homesteads."

working remotely from a somewhat larger than urban lot homestead is not more feasible, but the American Dream of the nice home and yard in the suburbs is under assault. "They" need to destroy that peaceful life, even though many blacks/browns have achieved the better life via that pathway.

Inserting public housing is only destructive of the dream, it kills off the path to safer communities, which seems to be their intent, not "diversity".

525 Late to the party...

I remember FJB earmarking $3billion (I think) for "tree equity" in one of the monstrous bills that are likely to be passed soon. As I understand it, lower income areas in cities are "tree deserts".

So now the NYT wants to do away with single family housing, causing more tree deserts? I guess it would be more "equitable" that way - insofar as nobody would have trees.

Cripes.

546 In the mix of the war on single family housing is that our country's population has basically doubled in my lifetime due entirely to government policy of mass immigration (both "legal" and illegal) having nothing to do with our needs or quality of life.

Everyplace on the coasts and around urban centers is enormously more crowded, with more traffic, with strained water resources, strained school budgets, ever more building, paving and deforestation. For actual "conservationists" this policy of Moar Immigration/Migration At Any Cost has been a complete disaster. And, we will be further punished for being so "selfish" as to want to hold onto a small piece of what was once an American standard of living.

Yep, great point. Those who claim to care about the environment should be adamantly against mass immigration to areas that are already overcrowded. They should be 100% in favor of people staying where they are and improving their areas. It makes little sense to huddle hundreds of millions of people together in one area instead of spreading out those people across the globe.

The solution is to bring successful American living conditions to the rest of the world, not bring the rest of the world to America. But "climate change" movement has never been about logic and common sense, only emotion and control of western civilization.

BTW, I once worked in the transplant department of a major teaching hospital in Chicago. I saw first hand why they call mopeds "donorcycles".
