California Bleeding: Walgreens Closes Five More San Francisco Stores, Citing The City's Policy of Tolerated Thieving as the Reason

The pharmacy chain had already closed 17 locations -- in San Francisco alone.

Walgreens is closing five more San Francisco locations as drug stores from the Bay Area to the Big Apple are besieged by rampant shoplifting and lax enforcement.

San Fran shoplifters have been emboldened by a referendum that lowered the penalty for stealing goods worth less than $950 from a felony to a misdemeanor, cops and prosecutors have said.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed the latest closures to SFGate.

...

"Retail theft across our San Francisco stores has continued to increase in the past few months to five times our chain average. During this time to help combat this issue, we increased our investments in security measures in stores across the city to 46 times our chain average in an effort to provide a safe environment."

Meanwhile, San Francisco's downtown is a "ghost town" as office workers move out.

The South of Market neighborhood is home to the headquarters of a slew of prominent tech companies including Uber, Dropbox, Airbnb, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Yelp, and Salesforce.

As much as 90% of the city’s workforce is now working from home, ABC7 News reported. Before the pandemic, San Francisco had the highest building occupancy rate in the U.S., but most of its skyscrapers have now emptied out, the outlet reported.

About 27% of office space in San Francisco is now available, according to a report by CBRE, a commercial real estate firm, compared to 19% of available office space in Manhattan. Meanwhile, San Francisco apartment rents, while starting to rise again, dropped more steeply than anywhere else in the country over the pandemic, while the cost of living remains high at 44% more than New York City, The Economist reported.

...

Several tech giants have announced they are moving their headquarters out of California permanently, fleeing the high taxes, expensive real estate, and stringent government regulation of Silicon Valley.

...

As workers, especially tech workers, migrate out of San Francisco, the city's downtown restaurants and other vendors are left wondering whether business will ever go back to normal.

...

Meanwhile, bars and restaurants are still subject indefinitely to an indoor mask mandate in San Francisco. While the city's current mask mandate will be lifted for other businesses like gyms, churches, and offices, on October 15, the order does not apply to bars and restaurants.

Not only are workers deserting San Francisco, so are schoolchildren.

And the city is upset by that... because the loss of 3500 schoolchildren will result in the loss of $35 million in school funding.

And that is the only reason.

- San Francisco school board officials are discussing a new report showing an enrollment drop of 3,500 students in the last two years.

The drop could mean a loss of state funding to the tune of $35 million.

SFUSD Superintendent Vince Matthews says the district needs to adjust to a "new normal," according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Former San Francisco mayor turned California governor Gavin Newsom is determined to accelerate California's decline. A new California law mandates that large retailers have "gender neutral" aisles.

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a woke law on Saturday forcing stores to have 'gender neutral' sections where traditional blue and pink toys and toothbrushes are banned.

Large department stores must now display products like toys and toothbrushes in gender-neutral ways - a win for LGBT advocates who say the pink and blue hues of traditional marketing methods pressure children to conform to gender stereotypes.

The new law, however, does not completely outlaw traditional boys and girls sections at department stores. Instead it says large stores must also have a gender neutral section to display 'a reasonable selection' of items 'regardless of whether they have been traditionally marketed for either girls or for boys'.

...

Low said he was inspired by the 10-year-old girl daughter of one of his staffers who asked her mom why certain items in the store were 'off limits' to her because she was a girl.

Right. Woke 10-Year-Olds are now supposedly writing our legislation.

Simultaneously, California is banning all gas-powered lawnmowers.

California will soon ban the sale of new gas-powered leaf blowers and lawn mowers after Governor Gavin Newsom signed off on the new law - also on Saturday.

The move is aimed at curbing emissions from a category of small engines on pace to produce more pollution each year than passenger vehicles.

The gas-powered equipment to be banned uses small off-road engines, a broad category that includes generators, lawn equipment, pressure washers, chainsaws, weed trimmers and even golf carts.

Under the new law these machines must be zero-emissions, meaning they'll have to be battery-powered or plug-in.

...

The state budget, approved earlier this year, includes $30million to pay for this effort and help professional landscapers and gardeners make the transition from gas-powered equipment.

But an anonymous industry representative has told the Times that the budget is 'woefully inadequate' for the nearly 50,000 small businesses that will be affected by the new law.

19 The day of the willowing continues, but this is important:

To Jay Guevara: I'd like to see the rough draft of your post, if possible.

I've been thinking it needs to be written from about May of last year, but every time I sat down to do it, I got writer's block.

I should probably return Shirer's book to the library, I think it's overdue. Anyway, to make a long story short: my Dad was a big fan of the book itself, and when he was growing up he _knew_ Shirer because Shirer was a friend of his Dad's.

And one of the things you have to realize is that the patterns used by the communists are all the same patterns used by the Nazis. It's as if they have a common origin. (Which is a valid topic of discussion in its own right). So when Dad would talk to me about what his friends in Venezuela were going through in 2003 or 2005 at the hands of the communists, his reference for the process would have been Nazi Germany and the best book on that was his old family friend William Shirer's.

Maybe if I get the audiobook it'll be easier.

69 Aside from the feces and needles in the streets, housing costs and changes in housing supply have something to do with that decline in student enrollment in San Francisco. It's younger married or at least cohabiting folks who have children who go to school. If those folks are priced out of the market--enrollment drops. If you wind up with a housing stock aimed at young single professionals--enrollment drops. If crime makes a neighborhood not safe for children--enrollment drops.

And I won't even go to the craziness in the curriculum--although that probably is at least a secondary cause of decline in enrollment.

During this time to help combat this issue, we increased our investments in security measures in stores across the city to 46 times our chain average in an effort to provide a safe environment."
++++
I am astounded that it is only 5x higher than the average. I would have figured it would be higher.

But "46x our chain average" in security measures can mean only one thing: men. Boots on the ground. More cameras and locking arms on the higher-value merchandise wouldn't cost that much. That must mean a lot of security guards. But why did they bother? They can't be arrested or detained, they won't be punished and if the guards try to disrupt theft then *they* will be the ones who get arrested for civil rights violations. So why did they bother throwing good money after bad by paying more security guards to stand around and watch the ravening mobs loot them?

86 Now when Navin Gruesome says small engines are banned, does he mean the sale of new product, or does he mean you'll be fined or charged for using an old one bought before the ban?
If it's the latter, then he hasn't learned from history.

Old product will continue to get used well past the time when it normally would've been replaced, repaired and "repaired" again and again, until they belch blue and black smoke until they crater in the hands of the user.
Then they'll get "repaired" again.

All these tyrants do is create a new class of lawbreakers, and their disrespect for the law will bleed over from this one issue to many others.
Maybe Gruesome wants to create a state of lawbreakers, as honest people are harder to control.
But maybe not as hard to control as outlaws.

157 San Francisco school board officials are discussing a new report showing an enrollment drop of 3,500 students in the last two years.
The drop could mean a loss of state funding to the tune of $35 million.

++++
That implies a per-pupil spending of $10,000. According to the census bureau, however, San Francisco Unified School District spent $17,288 per pupil in FY2019.

So the declining enrollment will result in a budget cut that reflects only around 58% of the per-pupil spending on those students that have left the district. That's a nightmare scenario for deficits, but it gets worse.

The district has around 57,000 students. So losing 3,500 of them represents a decline of a whopping 6.14%. The $7,288 per pupil that is *not* being a cut as a result of the enrollment decline amounts to a net *increase* of around $475 per remaining pupil. That is criminal mismanagement. The cut should be much closer to $60 million than $35 million.

252 But "46x our chain average" in security measures can mean only one thing: men.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at October 14, 2021 02:18 PM (DU+/6)

46x doesn't tell you it was guards... most security is cameras and locking cabinets, once installed cost very little annually. it could have been capital for more locking cabinets... which would be an initial enormous expense.

That's a possibility. Having to add a bunch of equipment in a short period of time would make the annual budget look pretty bad, though it would amortize out decently well over the life of the equipment.

Assuming, of course, that the equipment worked to contain the problem. It clearly didn't. On the plus side, it can be sent from the closed stores to other new stores and they won't have to buy it twice.

So the state requires that your emergency generator, for when the state's idiotic mismanagement of the power grid causes yet another blackout, has to be electric powered.

An electric-powered electrical generator.

If you look at the life cycles of batteries and solar cells, they are the farthest thing from zero emissions. And the more energy dense the battery, the greater the fire hazard, and the higher the price.

The state of CA is basically being run by low-achieving undergraduates having a late night stoned dormitory discussion. They're going to save the world, they've got it all figured out, just ask them.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at October 14, 2021 02:42 PM (DU+/6)

Because journalism is, in a word.. terrible. We don't really know the specifics. Could be a quote on the change in the capital budgets per store, which would reflect the cash outlay not the amortization for depreciation. Of course, it could have meant the P&L budget, which would likely reflect a headcount change... but we will never know from that story.. because garbage...

About 3.8 liters per gallon. So that's about 25,000 gallons.
42 gallons per barrel. So that's about 595 barrels.
About 650 barrels per rail care, so that's about 0.9 rail cars.

In addition to the limits on property-tax increases, there's also the memory issue. 463 I asked my wife this question. She's watched a lot of chef shows, I've watched a lot of chef shows.

When are the best chefs not cooking over an open flame?

I'm pretty sure they are using gas ovens, gas grills, and probably griddles heated underneath by gas (but they could be electric....so coal or oil).

That's why I'm thinking that there's going to be a high-priced gourmet restaurant exception to this dictate.

My daughter was/is the ultimate girl - stuffed animals everywhere, even to this day. When she finally went off to play golf, it was never an athlete thing or a boy thing, she did it because you simply had to do something besides just play dress up.

But a lot of the older ladies in golf, the "tournament ladies", still from back in the "day" - they made it uncomfortable for her. She's had more than her share of "you have beautiful eyes" come-ons in these pro-am things.

Nowadays, in college at least, its much more a chick/girl thing to do than it was back then, and she's happier with it. She'll always be too much of a girls' girl to lift heavy weights or get into that super competitive drive to score low against the competition. But at least it isn't as "manly" for girls as the sport used to be. Sadly, less boys seem to play it, being of the Soi-Variety pack now. They shy away when she asks them to go out on the course...they just want to play putt-putt or see an art film...ugh.

517 Late to the party, but the $10k per lost pupil funding drop is presumably state/federal money doled out on approximately a per student basis. The spend per pupil in SF is $17k, but that incorporates city/county money.

The thing about funding drops for public school system is that while costs often get reported on a per pupil basis, the systems tend to operate at marginal cost/savings (1 more or 1 less student) of essentially zero.

The savings associated with 3500 fewer students this year won't be much of anything (they likely won't close any schools or even layoff teachers or administrators this year, they'll just hope for a bailout at some point ... and they'll probably get it).
