Inflation Rises To Highest Level In Over 13 Years

"Transitory," I'm sure.

Heather Long

@byHeatherLong

BREAKING: Inflation was up 5.4% over last year in September -- the highest rate in 13 years.

Prices rose 0.4% in Sept, up from 0.3% in August

Gas, food and goods continue to be key drivers of inflation. Used car prices fell slightly but remain 24% higher than last year.

Soaring gas prices are a major component of the current "transitory" inflation. They've reached a 7 year high.

Over a 10-year period, the shale revolution also created a vibrant and prosperous industry in the U.S. reviving rural areas and bringing top-paying jobs to those involved. Two consecutive presidents had the good sense to stay mostly out of its way.

In fact, former President Barack Obama has tried to take credit for the invention of fracking and horizontal drilling , or perhaps even for putting all that oil under the ground in the first place.

Now, President Joe Biden is trying to throw away the independence, prosperity, and carbon emissions reductions that fracking has conferred upon the nation. All this just to appease environmental extremists whose support he needs and who think it is possible to wish away humanity’s need for abundant energy.

The price of this idiocy is being reflected at the pump every time you fill up. You may have noticed the price of gasoline is up almost 50% from where it was a year ago. It is now at its highest point in seven years.

Analysts have declared that "stagflation" -- a combination of a stagnant economy which isn't growing much, plus inflation -- which immiserated the country in the 1970s under Jimmy Carter is now here.

For months prices have been rising as the U.S. economy has recovered from the COVID pandemic while financial markets have stayed priced for perfection and central banks have clung to the view that elevated inflation would likely subside in short order.

Now, fears about higher prices are coming to the fore, with BofA Global Research analysts declaring in a Friday note that "stagflation is here" and a government report showing U.S. inflation still at a 30-year high as of August. Even central bankers appeared to be starting to capitulate this week, with Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell saying that high inflation could run into 2022.

Rather than dissipating, price pressures are holding consistently firm and could be getting harder to dislodge as time goes on. At the moment, a global energy shortage is also unfolding across the U.K., Europe and China, shaking up investors previously distracted by COVID's delta variant, the troubles of China's Evergrande Group, and the potential for a U.S. government shutdown along with the debt-ceiling debate.

...

"This is the first week that markets realized that global growth could be weak and inflation more persistent," Athanasios Vamvakidis, BofA's global head of G10 FX strategy, said via phone from London. "Energy-price increases were a wake-up call for markets, and the scenario that's now more likely to develop is one in which we get higher inflation and weaker output."

Note that inflation often comes with a growing economy. In that case, it's bad, but the growth in the economy ameliorates it. That would be a case of stronger output combined with higher prices.

But a stagnant economy with inflation?

Let's Go Brandon.

That article mentioned China's Evergrande Group, which is a huge real estate company, highly leveraged, and now possibly on the cusp of being wiped out due to collapsing real estate prices.

And China has signaled that they won't necessarily be bailing them out.

Which could spark a fresh round of global recession.

Which could be the second-worst Asian Contagion of the past few years.

SHANGHAI/LONDON, Oct 13 (Reuters) - The rumbling crisis at China Evergrande Group and other major homebuilders drove debt market risk premiums on weaker Chinese firms to a record high on Wednesday and triggered a fresh round of credit rating downgrades.

Evergrande, which has more than $300 billion in liabilities and 1,300 real estate projects in over 280 cities, missed a third round of interest payments on its international bonds this week, and other firms have also warned they could default.

Rating agency S&P Global delivered fresh downgrades to two of the sector's bigger firms, Greenland Holdings -- which has built some of the world's tallest residential towers -- and E-house, and warned it could cut their ratings further.

The $5 trillion property sector accounts for around a quarter of the Chinese economy by some metrics. In the clearest sign yet that global investors' worries are growing, the spread -- or risk premium -- on investment grade Chinese firms, which tend to have the most solid finances, jumped to its widest in more than two months.

Wait-- "investment grade" firms putting their money into a bubble real estate market...?

This all sounds very familiar to me.

...

Evergrande did not pay nearly $150 million worth of coupons on three bonds due on Monday, following two other missed payments in September.

While a 30-day grace period means the company has not technically defaulted, investors say they are expecting a long and drawn-out debt restructuring process.
...

Evergrande's mid-sized rival Fantasia (1777.HK) has already missed a payment and Modern Land (1107.HK) and Sinic Holdings (2103.HK) are trying to delay payment deadlines that would still most likely be classed as a default by the main rating agencies.

"These stories have challenged the notion that Evergrande is one of a kind," analysts at Capital Economics wrote in a note.

While China's policymakers will likely be able to avoid a "doomsday scenario", the overextended property sector will continue to weigh on the world's second-largest economy, they said.

"Even following an orderly restructuring of the worst-affected developers with minimal contagion to the financial system, construction activity would still almost inevitably slow much further."

Tucker Carlson spoke about the nearly decade-long binge of "quantitative easing" -- simply printing hundreds of billions of new dollars and injecting them into the economy -- last night.

He points out that the inflation this causes is bad for most people, especially those who've actually saved money.

But it's good for some people -- like highly-leveraged corporations with lots of debt. They benefit from dollars being made less and less valuable, as it makes their previous debt shrink.

Millions of retirees on Social Security will get a 5.9% boost in benefits for 2022. The biggest cost-of-living adjustment in 39 years follows a burst in inflation as the economy struggles to shake off the drag of the coronavirus pandemic.

The COLA, as it's commonly called, amounts to $92 a month for the average retired worker, according to estimates released Wednesday by the Social Security Administration. That marks an abrupt break from a long lull in inflation that saw cost-of-living adjustments averaging just 1.65% a year over the last 10 years.

Look on the bright side, with the ChiCom economy imploding, this means that they won't have as much cash available to buy American politicians.

Of course, American politicians can be bought so cheaply that they really should be packaged in the family-size 4-pak at WalMart. So it'll be a long time before American politicians are priced out of the market.

There was, especially since the inflation numbers have been completely screwed with (not to mention our profligate spending, which Trump was just as guilty of as anybody else), but the economic growth and the lower energy prices kept that in check.

Now all bets are off, given the Junta in Charge making things difficult for everybody not well-politically connected. And not helped by subsequent supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID overreaction.

Ask your physician about taking the reduced strength aspirin for those over 29. If you have existing bleeding, risk of stroke, or blood disorders or are a young adult with a viral infection such as Coof, then aspirin might be wise but your physician should know. You can also consult pharmacists as most know more about medications and side effects than many doctors. After all, knowing medicines is their primary job.

I've taken the reduced dose of aspirin for years as being in a certain age and from a family with heart issues. Likewise, I've taken Quercetin, vitamin C and Zinc via Coldeeze and D3, etc. for years for unrelated medical issues as a way to reduce body inflammation and risk of respiratory illness.

On purpose? Yeah, but only sort of. What this really is, I think, is not some grand plan but rather the combination of actions taken by people who think they're always right, that the system always works, that they can do no harm because their motivations are right, and that the only response to a problem is more intervention.

It will feed on itself and make bad outcomes even without a grand conspiracy. I don't think there is a true grand conspiracy beyond things like the WEF who want to blow up the world. But even by planning, it would be hard to get this particular toxic brew. There are too many variables. I think this is far more the consequence of every decision being bad, and every decision compounding the consequences of the decisions that came before.

I want the Dems and the NeverTrumpers to lose everything - have their savings wiped out by inflation, food beyond Hamburger Helper too expensive and having to walk ten miles to their doctor because gas is too expensive.

I want these fuckers to suffer. I want them having to sell pints of blood every week to afford grocery money. I want them cutting off their limbs and sucking out their own marrow in order to survive. Fuck them all.

We have the same thing niow, the rules are being set up to support the corporations that invested badly with borrowed money, so they never have to pay the price.

The price is supposed to be paid by us, instead.

164 Yep, fair bet that the insane spending and QE that occurred under Trump were only neutralized by the booming unleashed economy generally - energy, industrial and manufacturing investment and employment.

So, we had half the formula for actual prosperity in place. Other half would have been a very tough slog - the electorate is dumbed-down into self-destructively stupid territory, the institutions are generally garbage, and the "elites" are pathetically sub-mediocre (look at the idiotic political views of many "successful" Wall Street types). The political class? Obviously totally dysfunctional.

167 Wolfus, It won't stave off the Coof but it will reduce likelihood of blood clotting from the spike or from vaxxing even.

It's earning less than a percent, while inflation runs, optimistically, at six times that. The only alternatives that can become liquid should I need they money (as opposed to, say, land) are bubbilicious equity and bond markets.

198 154 MP4, I understand wanting the world to burn but a lot of good people are going to be hurt as well. One should always consider the effects on the nameless people in society around you when proposing what should happen. Right now, we have people in power that only consider their own feelings when making policy rather than what will be the consequences and whether it will work. You can see how that is going.

In general, some people are good, some are bad, and most have both good and bad qualities. Note that even the Lord in the Old Testament uses proportional punishment for his Chosen ones with only a few instances of nearly total annihilation.

And why is that good? Interest rates are a control and moderation mechanism, among other things. If the borrower is a bankrupt profligate rotter, he has to pay more. Why *shouldn't* the US government have to pay more and live within its means like I do?

Yes, higher interest and lower credit availability will have dire consequences for the government. If interest rates doubled - which, conservatively, they should - then suddenly well over half the revenue is going to interest. That difference will have to be cut. Sorry, that's the way it is. It needs to happen.

financial assets, unless they are speculative, take a beating in an inflationary period. The only investments that do well are physical assets which are also inflating, most notably real estate. And this explains why we are seeing such a mad rush to buy property across the sun belt states. (excepting the west coast, which people are fleeing)

Remember the panic of 1920-21? Almost no one does. During that panic, there were two camps. The first wanted a massive response - big unemployment benefits, federal support for industrial concerns, government-backed banking, a return to some degree of war-era production and price control, etc. The second said, "NOPE. Let it fall, let it sort itself out."

The second group won out for the most part (the Fed did some intervening). The result was the sharpest economic decline peak-to-trough in American history up to that point. And it was over and fully recovered within 18 months.

A member of the first group was Herbert Hoover. He got his way on their next time 'round the horn.

I never tried that -- I'm not sure it existed -- when I would have my nauseating, near-migraine sinus pain. Felt like a little demon was strangling a nerve in my left eye socket. They began when I was about 12 and recurred at odd intervals until I was about 43. Seldane Rx would knock them out; it had loads of caffeine. Oddly, though, after 6 months of using that, the headaches vanished. One day I found the bottle, but it had expired a year earlier. Good thing I no longer need it, as it's off the market now.

271 And house prices don't count in inflation metrics. They use a concept called "Owner's Equivalent Rent" (OER). Roughly, it means "how much would a homeowner have to pay if he rented the property instead of owning it?" OER ties directly into interest rates and financing, while ignoring actual costs. If the inflation calculation included property - and I think it should - it would be much higher.

Though OER is more honest than "hedonic adjustments."

Then CA needs to be largely eliminated from its current role. The restrictions on trucking from the docks are a serious problem. They're causing massive disruptions not only in port throughput but in the truck market across the country. California needs to be bypassed a lot more than it is. Washington or the Gulf. The Gulf is harder (requires transiting the Canal, takes a lot longer), but it can probably handle a chunk of the load. As long as the bottlenecks remain onshore in the major California ports, the problem will likely remain.

Of course there are the usual protocols: PPE, and accessories. And becoming proficient.
Gather what you can while the possibility is still there to have a chance. Good luck to all, and God bless!
Oh. And try some fun, music, laughter.

Its a company that rymes with willow.

They have perfected a bubble system. They control the pricing system in a geographically closed market. IE you can't really bring in new houses to a given zip code. Espec one that is built in. So they buy 10 houses in a couple of blocks. Then next month buy a house for 50K over the market. The market sets price by last closest comp. willow's 10 houses in that area just went up in price - instant 500K. Imagine this on a national scale. Its targeted. Its effective. And they are making millions. It should be illegal.

I've been endorsing a variation of that scenario pretty much since the beginning (and have been annoyingly persistent with this theory here at the HQ). Except that I believe the ChiComs released it in order to shut down the Hong Kong protests, which were getting serious enough that even the dumbshit MFM was saying that it was a threat to the regime. Releasing it in Wuhan was the ChiComs being clever, since an HK release would have been too obvious.

And given the typical efficiency of the superior Chinese Communist Party, they lost control of the virus and allowed it to spread. Oops.

Everything afterwards was just the ChiComs taking advantage of the situation, but having to do so on an improvised basis. Which is why so much of their response looked like they were flailing about.

My once little semi-rural town has been overrun by San Jose liberal scum. Funny how the gang-bangers and homeless tend to follow. Like flies to shit. So, now that they don't have to go to the office all the time, they're moving to where they can get a 4-5 bedroom home and something resembling a backyard for the cost of a 2-3 bedroom 1 bath bungalow in Mountain View or Sunnyvale.

I cannot figure out WTF is going on with this market, or really, what's sustaining it. I don't know who is buying the homes being abandoned in town, and they're building sub division after sub division here. At this point it's a giant shell game. If people were actually still coming into the state it would make sense. about 1:3 of the tours I shoot now are people leaving/retiring from CA. CA real estate has been the ultimate investment until now. If it crashes, it's going to crash hard. Make 2007 look bullish.

The Misery Index is easy, but masks another problem. Its formulation is "Unemployment Rate + Inflation Rate"
So right now, it would be 4.8 + 5.4 == 10.2

But unemployment is synthetically low - and has been for a long time - because the participation rate has continued its uninterrupted (except the Trump years) 20-year crash. I like the idea of a Modified Misery Index, which is (100 - participation rate) + Inflation rate"
Right now, that would be (100 - 61.6) + 5.4 == 43.8

Believe them, they meant it, the entire left wing of the generation that grew up in the Cold War.

I don't either. Carter was, best I can tell, the first U.S. President that actively sought to reduce our power. Every other one acted - at worst - out of a distorted view of what was best for the US.

For cryin' out loud, Carter was willing to unilaterally disarm the nuclear arsenal. He didn't give a damn what happened to the U.S.

Some want to give Carter a pass because of religion and ex-navy. Carter was a true vanguard of today's political class, and deserves nothing but scorn.

At its most basic, Shor's theory goes something like this: Although young people as a whole turn out to vote at a lower rate than the general population, the aforementioned type of young person is actually overrepresented within the core of the Democratic Party's infrastructure. According to Shor, the problem with this permanent class of young staffers is that they tend to hold views that are both more liberal and more ideologically motivated than the views of the coveted median voter, and yet they yield a significant amount of influence over the party's messaging and policy decisions. As a result, Democrats end up spending a lot of time talking about issues that matter to college-educated liberals but not to the multiracial bloc of moderate voters that the party needs to win over to secure governing majorities in Washington.

That's a lot of words to say, "The Party's agenda is radical and off-putting and doesn't reflect what people want or believe."

Redfin and Zillow's algorithm doesn't factor for a lot of things. And AI can't do comparatives. As far as its concerned, one block over is the same as you. Except for the freeway sound barrier wall in your backyard and the train tracks at the end of your driveway. Check local realtors that farm your area - often they have a website that's got accurate info.

I do know that in the SF Bay Area, it's not unusual to see something like a 7%/month increase, which is bananas.

It's also further proof, when combined with "moderate" Joe Biden's staying power within the Democratic primary of 2020, that the bulk of the Democratic Party's voting base isn't all that radical.

And yet, the Democratic Party is run by radicals, leaving a huge appeal gap for those kind of traditional voters, probably typified by New Deal Democrats of the Midwest.

Imagine the Republican Party was run by Marjorie Green and Sarah Palin, but the Republican base liked Mitch McConnell more.

410 Tucker Carlson spoke about the nearly decade-long binge of "quantitative easing" -- simply printing hundreds of billions of new dollars and injecting them into the economy -- last night.

What Americans generally do not understand is the Fed has been buying, via QE money, $1.5 TRILLION of treasury debt every year. "Tapering", the new word you hear so often scaring the markets, means the Fed will buy less of that debt. If the market has to buy that debt (and Chinese investors buy little of it these days), that means interest rates will rise, a lot.

Suddenly, the Build Back Better trillions of new spending no longer is possible, without driving interst rates into the stratosphere.

Liz Warren wants to get rid of the Fed Chairman to prevent exactly this outcome. She wants to spend, and she wants the Fed to print the money to do it.

434 By insisting on looking at 12-month results, current news coverage, and lack of interpretation by virtually everyone else, is understating the problem.

In the past 7 months (Mar. - Sept.), all entirely during the Biden Admin (surveys are done on the 16th of the previous month, so March, surveyed on Feb. 16, was the first Biden month), prices have increased at far higher annualized rates than the 5-plus routinely being reported today (ignoring a tiny bit of compounding):
- All items, 4.1% - annualizes to 7.1%.
- Food, 4.4% - annualizes to 7.7%.
- Energy, 11.3% - annualizes to 20.1%.
- All items less food and energy, 3.4% - annualizes to 5.9%.

We've got rip-roaring inflation RIGHT NOW, and based on what I see in price changes locally, it's even higher than the government figures indicate.

437 374 I like this idea that illegals are pushing up home prices in California. Like, they show up with $700,000 in cash, right?
Posted by: Jay in Pa at October 13, 2021 01:14 PM (PFNtX)

___

Banks will happily lend $700K to illegals with $0 down. Illegals know if they default, oh well. Banks know if they default, oh well, it's Fannie/Freddie's problem not theirs.

438 Yes they fully intend to create an energy crisis with global warming as the catalyst in order that energy is both unaffordable and rationed according to their dictates.

Yes they know an energy crisis will result in skyrocketing inflation, causing everyone's standard of living to drop, the impoverished will starve worldwide by the 100s of millions the comfortably well off will be impoverished.

This isn't collateral damage or unintended consequences, IT IS THE PLAN and every result listed here is desired.

Then the resulting humanitarian crisis will be used to build a global hegemony of absolute power.

That will be the "start" of the great reset by no means is a 10% global population decline along with reducing the standard of living to < 1800s sufficient. That's just a start to their final goal.

Are actual families moving in, or are corporations buying up one family homes? Because both can drive the market, but only one actually benefits it.

Even if corps are buying them, the houses are rented out. So either way there is demand to support increasing prices.

444 I am seeing houses for sale, they get bought, and then even remodeled, then remaining uninhabited. I have 3 of those on my block.
Come to find out, they are being bought by foreign investors.
Being uninhabited isn't good, one of them got broken in to and the thieves stole all the new copper.
Additionally, there is a huge crime wave with thieves stealing catalytic converters. I have scared off several thieves using a laser pointer and my voice.

Its not just the party - all the executive offices of every corporation, of the entertainment industry have been hiring these same drones to run the business with the same ideological fixation and contempt for actual people baked in by modern colleges. They all have off the wall ideas and hate any contradiction of the dogma, even if their company loses billions.

447 something that I never see mentioned about CA is the water rights to the colorado river. These are currently negotiated through 2026. To bring everyone up to speed and I am simplifying of course

CA has first rights to water from the colorado river. The other states have allocations granted to them. This is significant for 2 reasons which are never brought up

1) northern CA for over 40 years has been dumping its excess water into the pacific ocean in order to "save the delta smelt" instead of sending it to central CA to use for crops

2) CA subsidizes almond growers with cheap water. how is that significant you say. well you water almond crops by flooding the field. its the most water intensive crop you could have.

State legislators profit off #1 by buying up central CA land for cheap and #2 through kickbacks

I mention all of this because you would think that republicans, when in power, could use this issue as a hammer to start curtailing the CA state government's communist impulses.

You were a sucker like the rest of us. It does suck hugely. It is part of the reason why we decided to build, which sweat equity is dwindled just the same as cash savings. U.S. government is asshoe.
