Unexpectedly, September Job Creation Numbers Collapse, Missing Expectation of 500,000 by Over 300,000

Let's Go Brandon.

The U.S. economy created jobs at a much slower-than-expected pace in September, a pessimistic sign about the state of the economy though the total was held back substantially by a sharp drop in government employment.

Nonfarm payrolls rose by just 194,000 in the month, compared with the Dow Jones estimate of 500,000, the Labor Department reported Friday.

It would take a miracle to spin this as good news.

You asked for a miracle? I give you the N - Y - T.

You mean Biden's recovery is slightly better than Obama's recovery?

Great. Green Shoots Part IX. Jobs created or saved, y'all!

5 You know what will help?

More regulations, more threats of punitive administrative action against the private sector, and increased chaos in every sector of the American societal construct.

That'll get those private employers to hire more.

21 It's weird. There's a labor shortage. No one can find the workers they need. Yet despite this, unemployment keeps climbing. So what gives?

I can think of a few possibilities. First, the extended benefits made not working lucrative - but those are largely over now. Second, the long periods of unemployment and benefits may have become habit-forming and the lower benefits, if they're enough to live on, are "good enough" to keep people out of the workforce. Third, the work environment sucks, HR departments are Nazis, there's a vax mandate and employment is such an unrewarding, annoying, pathological and hateful environment that people don't want to be bothered and are opting out rather than put up with it.

There are surely other potential answers here, too. These are just the three I can think of quickly and easily while I enter hour six of my call. Of these, I wonder how big a factor item three is. If it is significant, that is terribly hard to fix.

If you want to work at Bob Evans, or some fast food place for $15-17 an hour, those jobs are out there.

A lot of people used to making > $50K a year, are looking for work. They aren't going to work at Home Depot, Bob Evans, etc. for this. And have to get a vax, too.
What a deal!

Depressing employment is easy. You just let your inner freak flag fly as a government bureaucrat.

Encouraging employment is harder. You can't flex your muscles as a government bureaucrat anymore, and every time you do you end up getting "unexpected" results. It's weird. Maybe if they try a bit harder...

I had some outdoor work on my house. Scheduled to happen in January. Just happened last week. Why? Three reasons, two of which are entirely due to the COVID response and general fuckoffery.
1. Couldn't get fill dirt because the winter and early spring were too wet. Not the government's fault, they don't control the weather (though they claim to be able to)
2. Couldn't get window wells from their suppliers. Took a month or two to get them in stock
3. Couldn't find labor and they have been running two crews instead of four. Pushed back everything by another few months.

#thanksJoe.

My MiL lost her job a few months back. She hasn't been able to find anything since. We've come up with an arrangement with her where she will come to our house for two weeks out of every month to take care of the youngest grandbaby during the week. The only real reason she's not doing it full time is because her own mother lives next door to her and needs a whole lot of regular attention.

105 And you cannot discuss this with most people.

Point out that we, within recent memory, had low gas prices, low unemployment, the lowest black unemployment rate in decades, domestic oil production. . .

But the moment you say "Trump," the person you are talking to goes batshit crazy. The MFM have turned them into Pavlov's dog the moment Teh Donald's name is uttered.

At this point, anyone who complains gets - depending on whether or not they're friends - either a "well, this is what you voted for," or a "Fuck you, you wanted this. No mean tweets, remember? So empty your wallet, get a second job to pay your bills and shut the fuck up, assmunch."

Screaming bitch interviewer lays right into me, obviously has not read my letter or resume. "Can you work an eleven hour shift without breaks six days a week? How will you get to work [from my house four blocks away, as I explicitly noted in cover letter]"? I tell her, look, just call my previous supervisor at the number on the nice resume I sent her. 182 What they refuse to mention is that times have changed. I don't know about you, but I am JUST old enough to remember when companies would OFFER free flu shots. They'd simply offer them and if you wanted one, great but if you didn't...great. That's because they were smart enough to understand that not everyone could get the flu shot even if they were required to. (I have NEVER gotten a flu shot without being subject to a battery of questions which you had to answer in the affirmative or the negative before you could get the shot.)

Now they DEMAND you get this mystery shot against the world's most dangerous and vicious plague, or you can't work there or you are fired if you DO already work there. Quite a few people see this and hear "GET THE POKE OR ELSE!!!" And say "else".

I see this - and what is happening to the supply chain and transportation as a result - as a slow motion general strike. People are going to learn the hard way that getting goods to market and getting things (and people) from A to B requires manpower, and without it, things will grind to a halt...with cascading effects elsewhere. The worst part? This is ALL self-inflicted.

First paragraph is all about recent shootings in the US...seems weird in an article about bringing back 2A norms...

Money quote from meat of the article: "Given the scale of the problem and the widespread interest in reform, you would think that gun violence would be a major, ongoing issue before state legislatures, in local governments, and at the ballot box. Instead, five or more unelected justices on the U.S. Supreme Court are positioned to ban meaningful gun regulation altogether if they personally see fit to stretch the Constitution that far in a landmark Second Amendment case on the docket this term"

Yup. Restoring constitutionally protected rights is now extreme judicial overreach, but killing babies and forcing people to buy something is a government imperative.

My guess was that Manchin told Mitch that unless he extended the debt ceiling, he was going to vote with Chucky Cheese to nuke the filibuster for a one time raise of the debt ceiling.

That would have guaranteed the passage of the $3.5T pay out to Gwinnett and Milwaukee County "outreach programs" that fund the crack hos and their pimps needed to "harvest" dem ballots in the 2022 election.

Everyone in DC knows that the 'walking around' election cash that the Dems use in every election season to get Tricksy and Huggy Bear to bring in the ballot bacon is buried in these budget bills.

Manchin brought in the extension for Chucky and then Chucky vomited on it on the Senate floor, so Manchin got pretty mad at that...but that's who he works for...

237 Money quote from meat of the article: "Given the scale of the problem and the widespread interest in reform, you would think that gun violence would be a major, ongoing issue before state legislatures, in local governments, and at the ballot box.

Posted by: Intrepid Bulwark AoS Liaison at October 08, 2021 01:38 PM (JCZqz)

The use of "gun violence" should have been a giveaway. It is for me. I can never understand while violence via gun is bad but violence by, say, a knife, a car, a golf club, or any other weapon, is perfectly OK. (The UK Parliament, as proof thayt governments compete against each other in terms of idiocy, is OBSESSED over "knife crime", meaning they consider crime with knives bad but crime by other means perfectly OK.)

It was suggested to me by a knowledgable guy that I should switch back to 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps for the dumbbell press. I've only been on free weights for about three months, and I need to build up all the stabilizer muscles.

Those 65 and 60-pounders were a bit shakey.

With 400,000 illegal aliens crossing every month now (that's the official count, so the real number is probably at least 3x higher), we'll create lots of new jobs.

Let's see, we'll need to hire thousands of day care workers, to babysit all the new "American" kids these people will give birth to. And we'll need thousands of translators, because most of the new illegals don't speak English and will need somebody to explain all their new rights and "free" government benefits to them in their native tongue. And of course we're going to need many thousands of new welfare case workers, because somebody is going to have to coordinate all the various different programs to ensure that all the illegals get the various housing subsidies, food stamps, medical care, etc., that taxpayers will provide them. And course we'll need to hire lots of new lawyers to defend all the illegal alien criminals who get arrested for the various crimes they'll be committing here, as well as civil lawyers to help the illegals navigate the immigration courts . . . .

291 I was unemployed for a while after the Kung Flu hit. The shutdowns basically shut down the company I worked for, permanently. I was lucky in that I was almost literally the last person out the door, but I ended up unemployed nonetheless. I figured finding a job would be easy, but it wasn't. For whatever reason, it seemed like even employers that were hiring, weren't hiring. Case in point: I saw an ad on Monster or Indeed or one of those sites for a job for which I was qualified. They said they would be hiring 10-15 people. So, I told a few friends who were in the same line of work as me and unemployed for the same reason, and several of us applied. None of us got a call - not even a "thanks but no thanks" call. Months later, that company was still advertising for IMMEDIATE HELP NEEDED, and I know of at least 7 people including myself who had applied. Zero were contacted. So, what is up with that? I've heard the same about other jobs from other people. Anecdotal, I know, but still. It's weird.

300 If the vaccine mandate is upheld and my company is forced to comply, we're going to lose at least a third of our workers by my estimates. And they're the workers we can't afford to lose-the production and shipping guys, who basically make the company run. (One of our lower production guys-who's in his 70s-got COVID last fall and the production line nearly came to a screeching halt for the two weeks he was out.) We're a medium-sized company and several states will be screwed if we go under, but that's what will happen if this vaccine mandate gets enforced.

310 "Filibuster" and reconciliation have no relationship.

Reconciliation is a "privileged" matter under the Budget Act, meaning set time for debate, and no need for cloture for any part of it. It is a sort of "filibuster-free" zone in the Senate.

Only restraint on it is "germaneness", whether amendments or contents meet the rules of being relevant to budget issues - a call made by the parliamentarian - whose decisions *do* require a super-majority to over-rule (IIRC).

Everything/anything can happen with reconciliation, without regard to rules of the Senate, and filibuster. If Manchin traded his vote, if was just a straight trade, it wouldn't affect how reconciliation rolls.

So they went down the list and hired...someone else, and months later she was fired for theft. If they were to call me wanting me to work for them at this point I'd tell them where to go.

Posted by: Mister Scott (Formerly GWS) at October 08, 2021 01:50 PM (JUOKG)

No, you can use reconciliation just once, and only once for each Congress elected. So Schumer has to decide, use it for Debt ceiling raise, or use it for the $3.5T budget, but he cannot use it for both. And you must, by Congress rules, have the ability to pay for the budget proposed by raising the debt ceiling first to cover it. So the Dems are stuck. Because if they chose to use reconciliation to raise the Debt Ceiling, clearing the way for the $3.5T budget, the Republicans will filibuster the budget bill, and it will die until next year...

I may be mistaken on this, but I think there's only one reconciliation left in this Congress. I think the gamble was that Mitch was trying to force Schumer to use his one bullet on the debt ceiling so it wouldn't be available for the $3.5T. Now I think what's going to happen is that they're going to try to combine the debt ceiling increase into the $3.5T (or whatever number it turns out to be to satisfy Manchin).

For years I had a standing job offer with a litigation support company in San Diego. I kept telling them that I would need X dollars (which was 2.5 times what I was making), a $1,000 rent allowance, $450 a month car allowance, and a 5% stake in the company to do it. Why? The money was what it would take to just break even to live within a reasonable (15 minute hence one hour with traffic) drive from their office and the ownership stake was so that they couldn't easily fire me two months after I moved.

Lots of companies were on the receiving end of grants and loans that were predicated on the active need of more employees. Not so much on the actual having and using and growing with the new employees. Also, a lot of companies want to get rid of specific people and replace them with specific other people but can't legally do that. They use these incidents to lay off the ones they want, put out useless wanted ads, and then hire the specific people they want while staying within the letter of the law.

336 Walk into the Walmart here and you start at $14 an hour. If I were physically able to work I would be working and use that cash to make extra principle payments on the mortgage.

There's a local little strip-mall, Home Depot, Panda Express, Chipoodle, across the street a bunch of other larger or smaller chain stuff.

Any of the big names will pay you $20/hr if you can stand up for a few hours (yeah, not everyone can...) Some people will take less to work in something specifically interesting to them, or something that gets real tips.

And the turnover's got to be horrific, I don't eat at that Chipotle routinely but the crew is different every time I do. And I mean severely different, not just shift changes.

I'm still futzing with personal projects but maybe I should walk into Home Depot and say "When do I start?" I can pass a piss, I know where EVERYTHING is and what size frammis fits that size epithelium, and I'd be running a department in two months.
