The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

As if we needed any more examples of the Biden junta's catastrophic approach to foreign policy (and everything else), their plans for dealing with the apocalyptic lunatics in Tehran seem to be letting them do what they like and then perhaps fire off a sternly worded letter tot he United Nations once Iran nukes Israel. After all, there are many highly placed people in the administration with clear and unambiguous track records of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism (they are the same thing).

Israel still fears US approach to Iran

“Yes, the talks were good, the atmosphere was very friendly and open, the messages were conveyed, but in terms of substance, the situation is bad. Perhaps even very bad,” he said. “Right now, there is no joint operational contingency plan against Iran should efforts to return to the nuclear agreement fail. And even worse, the Americans do not have any solution whatsoever to such a situation. They do not have a Plan B. They do not have alternatives and what is truly troubling is that they are not really concerned about it. They see events in a completely different way than we do. It’s their right, of course, but it is of great concern to us.

Luckily Israel takes existential threats rather more seriously than the feckless fools in the White House. What really makes the entire situation so unbelievably pathetic and stupid is that if they only paid attention to the actual statements coming out of the mullah's mouths they would realize that the goal is the destruction of "Little Satan," (Israel) first, and then the "Great Satan," (America) next.

President Trump made it abundantly clear that Iran's maniacal drive to destroy Israel and then America was incompatible with modern society, and he reinstated significant sanctions. But equally important he made it clear to Israel that they could act in their own defense, both proactively by degrading Iran's nuclear research and by attacking Iran's expansionist tendencies in Syria and Lebanon. This sent the clear message that America was supporting the only democracy in the region, and that the 7th century esthetic that the mullahs prefer was not acceptable export.

But now we have an administration that has never gotten over the inconvenient fact that Hitler didn't finish the job, and their actions seem designed to beat best passive players, and at worst active participants in the destruction of Israel.

Of course Israel has other plans, and that includes targeting Iranian scientists and engineers, hacking the programs' computer systems, constantly improving Israel's anti-missile technology, and of course continuing its careful campaign of denial of its own nuclear capability, so that the Arab world understands exactly what will happen if Iran succeeds in building nuclear weapons and attempts to use them. And most of the Arab world is happy to turn a blind eye toward Israel's self defense and would rather have a cold peace with Israel than a regional war, complete with nuclear exchanges.

We had a window with which to make a big impact on the ME with Trump in office, but that window is closing fast. China has a huge appetite for oil, with the cash to pay for it. They are cutting side deals with Iran to get their oil, and once their economy gets going strong they'll make deals for everyone else as well.

26 The open border policy in Europe seems even more cataclysmic than open borders in USA. White Christians in Great Britain are considering escape ... to Poland or the Czech Republic maybe. The no-go zones around Paris or other cities were real but ignored 20 (?) years ago. ... Many consider them lost already ...

And I just read some guy at the Pentagon, in charge of ? technology, resigned because he said in his opinion, China already won, and we should have concentrated on AI more than better jets over the last 20 years.

Israel is forced to deal more directly with the warfare side, but the tech side is also being given to China ... Biden has opened doors for Huawei again .. he really does seem to be the pawn of China, and he has children in charge (not adults).

Oh, and ships as well. Ace's sidebar mentions that the Littoral Class ships, which were supposed to last for 20 years, are being mothballed after 13. Unfortunately, the military brass knows nothing about computers; besides, there's no golden parachute in it for them to go to Silicon Valley, so why bother working with them on the problem. They are more comfortable with the traditional military-industrial complex.

39 Israel is certainly better than any of its adversaries. But I'm nonetheless kind of tired of hearing about its problems. I'm in an extreme minority, but I've more or less rethought the U.S.'s role as global colossus. And Israel's Covd policy - vaccine passports contingent on 3 shots - is about as tyrannical as any leftwing jurisdiction in the U.S. aspires to be. I'm happy to sell Israel whatever it can afford but that's about it.

Building on the bitcoin model, central banks are planning to produce their own "digital currencies". Removing any and all remaining privacy, granting total control over every transaction, even limiting what ordinary people are allowed to spend their money on.

From the moment bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies first emerged, sold as an independent and alternative medium of exchange outside the financial status quo, it was only a matter of time before the new alternative would be absorbed, modified and redeployed in service of the state.

It's time to let the copyrights expire on all of these Marvel, DC, Disney, etc. characters.

I could kinda get behind the idea that these were "cultural treasures" which needed to be protected from obscene or absurd or anti-character assassinations, but hell, these guys are trashing their own "cultural treasures".

Might as well let the rest of us in on the fun. They've destroyed any reason at all for them holding extended copyrights.

At least some of the post-copyright stories would stay true to the characters.

You're right about that!

I don't recall it ever being said how Jimmy came to work at the Daily Planet in the first place. College degrees weren't mentioned much in the old Silver Age Superman family comics. I suppose he was originally a coffee-fetcher and general gofer, and got a chance to write a story because he was on the spot as it happened. Perry White or one of his editors liked the kid and his can-do attitude, and gave him a shot as cub reporter.

On the old George Reeves series, 1951-56, it's funny to see how Jimmy and Lois both call Clark "Mr. Kent" most of the time, but he calls Jimmy by his first name or "Jim," and Lois is almost always "Miss Lane."

I've got to admit, I like the reverse take on Luthor: that he sees himself as a hero moving to defeat an alien invader (Superman) who is plotting to take over the world. In the best dramas, antagonists do not say to themselves, "Let's see, how evil can I be today?" To them, their goals and methods are right and necessary -- they are simply trying to do the *best* they can with what they have.

Melodramas and soap operas are something else.

Despite lacking a college education, a number of journalists were still highly educated. Because they read *ALL THE TIME*. I think the problem with Saletan's bet is that he's disregarding the vaccine and mask nonsense. According to the interwebs, most states are somewhere around 50% fully vaccinated (with 60% having had one shot). That's nowhere near what the powers that be insist must happen. They're determined to fire anyone who won't comply. And they've repeatedly talked about boosters. And the pharma companies are developing even more Covid drugs, something they wouldn't do if they expected this madness to pass anytime soon. This will all be an economic and political albatross for as long as it continues.

136 Allowing that to enter the public domain opens up the works to reproduction and sampling, allowing them to potentially reach new audiences that the original author/publisher were unable or unwilling to tap in the original run.

---------------

The author can do that now - shouldn't he have the right to do what he wants?

Personally, I am more of the opinion that personal works should be protected for life of the author plus some period post-death (10 - 20 years). I'd be open to an argument that corporate works should be 25 - 35 years.

==========

What soured me so much on the copyright regime was Irving Brant's six volume biography of James Madison. It's a great, detailed, and eminently readable book, delving deeply and entertainingly into the president's life from childhood through death.

The final volume was published in 1961, and it's been out of print for decades. There are no reprints at all, and no one even knows if it's actually under copyright or not because of the vagaries of how works were grandfathered into later copyright regimes. The only way to get a copy is to spend a fair amount on old copies, and the only copy of the first volume I had to spend $100 on. It was ridiculous.

The work entering the public domain wouldn't prevent the original author from doing it through the rest of his own life. And, there's a natural right issue underlying it all.

If I take a text, copy it out, and return the text to its original owner, the original owner has the original text still. If I sell the copy, the original owner has not lost the original text. What copyright is is a government created right to allow individuals to exclusively realize gains on intellectual property. There's room for that, but it needs to have an end point, even when the author is still alive.

Mozart wrote his music and Shakespeare wrote his plays without copyright protection. The copies that arose in imitation of their work almost immediately was actually a push to keep them producing new stuff.

Also, if the big ticket bills were going to be passed, they already should have been passed. He thinks they can just handwave the problems they have in their caucus away, but they can't - primarily because Biden is an ineffective and incompetent leader at every level.

and his biggest mistake - he blithely assumes that nothing new bad will happen, but we see energy crises coming, international crises aka China, supply chain crises getting worse, not better - he can't accept that everything will be much much worse a year from now than it is right now. And it will be his parties fault.

You mean "continued" enriching uranium. They never quit. The nuclear agreement was a joke, which left Iran free to continue their activities with no observation and no pushback. Israel did an intelligence disclosure after they raided Iranian document warehouses that showed very clearly that Iran lied from the start, had been enriching uranium, had been pursuing atomic weapons and that they never stopped even for a moment, payoffs and corruption from the United States notwithstanding.

Yes. It's like the PIP stuff. Once you go on that, you're eventually going to be fired, or RIFfed, or whatever. No one ever really rallies in Corporate America, except the CEOs, who fail at one job, and move to another, higher-paying job.

Posted by: Chairman LMAO at October 12, 2021 11:35 AM (/TTi/)

247 OK, since it was asked: Jimmy Olsen began as a copy boy at the Daily Planet back in the earliest issues of Action Comics, and just sort of moved up the ranks from there as the plot of the week demanded, much like how somebody at DC got hammered and didn't realize that Lex Luthor was the red-haired guy instead of his bald henchman, so that's what he became. Large swaths of the Superman mythos pretty much follows that path until the 60s, when stuff started getting codified. And yeah, Jimmy's a pretty neat character in the Silver and Bronze ages, capable of competency without Superman in it at all. He had the nickname "Mr. Action" because of it. We've NEVER got to see that Jimmy on screen, which is unfortunate.

I'll note that the DCEU movies, beginning with Man of Steel, did indeed change Jimmy into Jenny before unceremoniously killing the character off. He's race-swapped in Supergirl, which is the least of the indignities heaped upon him there.

249 Regarding Superman, the pattern is always the same.

Retell the story of a beloved character but make it "modern" and "edgy."

Storyline fails. Usual suspects complain that it's society's fault.

When you ask usual suspects why they don't simply make their own heroes, you get a puzzled expression.
