From Google arts-
A young woman stands at the window of Friedrich's studio. It is Caroline, the painter's wife. With her back to the viewer, she is looking out across the River Elbe to the other side. The bare interior of the studio is composed of strict horizontals and verticals. It seems lifeless and unlived in. The only signs of life are the figure of the woman, the sight of the delicate green of the poplar trees, and the wide springtime sky. In this work, Friedrich has adopted a favorite theme of Romanticism, where the framework of a window links proximity and distance and evokes a longing for the unknown. The outward gaze, contemplating nature, also turns inwards towards the individual's own spiritual center. Posted by: redridinghood at October 12, 2021 08:38 AM (NpAcC) 52
Oh man, do I love Friedrich. His work is instantly recognizable and hits me in the soul.
This type of figure is called a "ruckenfigur." A lone, single figure with his/her back to the viewer. They are looking out at a scene beyond, like here. It presents a sense of longing, missing someone/something, a peaceful aloneness, or something similar but more sublime and indescribable. Posted by: Kris at October 12, 2021 08:39 AM (OyyDO) 53
Either that is a mast of a small boat directly outside or a ham radio antenna.
Posted by: Tonypete at October 12, 2021 *** I think you're right; her window overlooks a river or stream, or a small lake. So she is at a second-floor window -- or the boat's hull would be visible. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at October 12, 2021 08:39 AM (/XOcP) 54

Someone violated the 100 comment rule earlier by talking about some CCP apparatchik who got expelled. Per the Wikipedia entry on him:
An investigation found that Wang lost his ideals and convictions, was disloyal and dishonest to the Party, refused to cooperate in the investigation, falsified personal information submitted to Party organs, used public funds for personal purposes, intervened in judicial affairs, abused his power to seek benefits for others and took a huge amount of bribes, and had a lavish and dissolute lifestyle and traded power and money for sex. Posted by: AltonJackson at October 12, 2021 09:19 AM (/OzFi) It doesn't have to be perfectly level, just damn close so that the bubble in the level isn't all the way over. Solar Storm Expected to Hit Earth Soon Could Cause Power Grid, Satellite Disruptions
A geomagnetic storm caused by a solar flare is slated to impact Earth this week, potentially causing disruptions to power grids and satellite communications, according to the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center. The CME could impact power grids around 55 degrees latitude, potentially triggering power grid fluctuations with voltage alarms at higher latitudes, according to the Space Weather agency. Meanwhile, satellite "orientation irregularities" may occur, the agency said, adding that "high-frequency radio propagation can fade at higher latitudes." The storm may increase the drag on low-Earth orbiters, said the bulletin. Aurora is likely to occur over much of Scotland and perhaps extend into northern England and Northern Ireland tonight Posted by: artisanal ette at October 12, 2021 09:45 AM (uvIpl) 317

Late to the thread. These damn appointments are a nuisance.
I always enjoy it when CBD uses a Friedrich painting. This one is no exception. It is quieter than most of his works, more intimate. Instead of people against a powerful, natural scene, the lady is almost part of the room with the way her clothing blends with the greens and browns of the walls and floor. It is further echoed by the green outdoor colors. Very effective. Her straight posture also matches the upright walls and growth outside. It does continue Friedrich's style of rather stark imagery. I don't know what the pole with the guy lines on the right is supposed to be. It seems incongruent. Far too early for a radio tower. Perhaps a lightning rod? Interesting choice after yesterday's Remington. Posted by: JTB at October 12, 2021 09:46 AM (7EjX1) 323

According to the Marine, "there are two available exemptions, the medical exemption and the religious exemption, both of which you can apply for."
"Problem is," the Marine continues, "is if your [exemption] doesn't get approved, you're going to be ordered to get the treatment again. And then if you refuse after having your exemption denied, you're going to be treated just like any other refusal would be." At this point, the Marine reveals the dark and distressing possible implications for Marines who refuse to receive the experimental mRNA shot. "Everyone who refuses to get this treatment will be subject to a general court-martial convening authority in which they will determine your fate." "A general court-martial is the highest tier of military justice that can be administered, and they have the authority to issue up to a death sentence to anybody whose case comes to a general court-martial." https://tinyurl.com/t4ekbfnk This is not the first to say he would die rather than get jab. After being ridiculed for offering your personal opinion last night I don't blame you in the least for not wanting to offer an opinion on the entire nursing profession. Yes, I caved and got the jab. I, too, had the shot because it was either that or never see my 89yo mother again. Posted by: old chick at October 12, 2021 10:00 AM (sOete) She wasn't being ridiculed for offering her personal opinion - it was the "don't touch your face" thing, which is (while true) pretty much impossible for a human being to avoid. It's not a conscious thing that we do, it's an automatic thing that we do. And the commenter above was extending her an invitation to rant in support of the nurses who are resisting mandated vaccination. The fact that she isn't one of them isn't the point. Disagreement on this blog is nothing new or unusual, especially when it comes to hot-button issues, and medical tyranny and deception certainly qualifies. In normal times, news that massive amounts of evidence of Covid-19 vaccine dangers was presented at the International Criminal Court in The Hague would be major news covered worldwide. These aren't normal times, so the event was completely ignored by pretty much every major media outlet. As far as they're concerned, the vaccines are "safe and effective" because they've all been instructed by the powers-that-be to declare that the vaccines are "safe and effective."
* * * I just read an article reporting that the government of Taiwan says that the death toll number of Taiwanese who have died after receiving the vaccine has now surpassed Taiwan's death toll number for covid deaths. Since they began giving the vaccinations, 849 Taiwanese have died after receiving the vaccines. The number of confirmed covid deaths in Taiwan is 844. The government reported the 849 post-vaccine deaths in a document titled "Notice of Adverse Events After Covid-19 Vaccination." It's not clear if the 849 deaths were all caused by vaccine side effects, or if the people got re-infected with covid after getting vaccinated, or what. It's damn frustrating that we can't get better information! I just finished milling myself a precision straight edge. Made from stress relieved gray iron. Took me 2 days to get it milled as it ain't really easy to mill something 16" long on my home mill. Had to built a 2 piece vise to hold it to the table. Tedious to get the multiple setups true and solid enough to mill. Finished with my shop made fly cutter. Will have to scrape it in with prussian blue and my granite surface plate and shop made carbide tipped hand scrapers. Will likely take me a couple of weeks. I am making a wooden case to carry it around in as it will be too valuable when finished to let get dinged up.
