Re: Mington, on topic and worth re-mentioning because it's one of the best museums I've ever visited.
Near the Civilian Marksmanship Program storefront in Aniston, Alabama is a museum named the Berman Museum of World History. At that museum are thousands of guns, artifacts, spy gadgets, oddities like Napoleon's tea set, WWI exhibits giving you a sense of no man's land, etc. And lots of Remington sculptures, old west firearms, a by-golly Gatling gun, and so many other wonderful things. I don't remember paintings but I'd be shocked if there weren't some. It's one of the most fascinating museums I've ever been to, and probably worth a trip to Anniston just for the museum itself. You owe it to yourself if you enjoy western or military history and are within a couple of hours at some point (Atlanta isn't far). As others have said, the "fall" is allegorical. Time was, the range was open and unfenced so the cowboy rode, unhindered, far and wide over the land. Now, it is fenced in and the cowboy must pause and dismount now and then in his wanderings to open a gate between parcels delineated by barbed wire barriers. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at October 11, 2021 08:51 AM (pNxlR) 65
Frederic Remington 1895 work The Fall Of The Cowboy is a starkly accurate reproduction of life in the American West from an artist who frequently conjured his own reality or depicted his subjects with only a passing glance. Remington's reproductions of life in the 'wild' west were less a reflection of life as it was and more an image of how his contemporary North saw the rough and wild South. Yet, The Fall Of The Cowboy is a remarkable document of the debris of a resilient, heroic, and tragic people. Remington's painting portrays a world filled with the trials and struggles of a rural reality battling for survival in a rapidly modernizing nation. Forced to dismount in order to cross a wire fence, the men are shown to be impeded by the excessive demarcating of land and property.

This is such an evocative painting, even if sad. The dark sky, the bleak, cold landscape, the men no longer young and even the horses look tired: it all adds up to a passing of an era. The fence and gate notes the end of open range that the cowboy thrived on.
Yes, it's an illustration for a story but, like most of Remington's art, it goes beyond the specific image. This scene could apply to any people who have done their best and used their skills only to be overtaken by change. Inevitable doesn't make it palatable. I suspect many of us feel this way more and more often. Posted by: JTB at October 11, 2021 08:52 AM (7EjX1) 70

Cowboys are so evocative and such a big part of our cultural history. They are used as a synonym for many things. My mom, for example, doesn't call it "country music." She calls it "cowboy music" and the rest of country music that *isn't* really cowboy music doesn't really count.

I worked weekends during the day behind the concession stand. One day the town drunk and I were the only people inside, There was a Roy Rogers serial playing, In one scene Roy came riding up to some emergency in a house, leaped from trigger, opened the gate in front of the house and ran in. Yay, horsies! Anyway, so I finally popped my Dave Chapelle cherry last night and watched his latest Netflix show. I thought this guy was supposed to be funny? It was less comedy and more social commentary punctuated by the occasional stab at humor here and there. Only one thing he said made me laugh out loud. Now as social commentary? Not bad. He's a very thoughtful guy. But it's billed as a comedy show. It's preachy. It's a stand-up preaching show. This is why I hate modern comedy. "Say the things people need to hear," they say. Fuck you, I say. Make people laugh. Comedy is supposed to be funny. This really wasn't all that funny. Posted by: Robert at October 11, 2021 09:24 AM (1Yy3c) 162

In 1994 or so, I got to meet Mr. Berman and he gave me a private tour of his collection. His basement was set up like a museum. He was a member of the OSS during WW2 and collected a lot of interesting weapons and other things. He let me borrow a bunch of weapons that I drove up to Ft. What stunts did they pull around breast milk ?
Posted by: JT at October 11, 2021 09:56 AM (arJlL) ++++ They did a massive marketing campaign in various African countries to describe how much better for your infant their formula was. They discouraged the use of breast milk in favor of formula. Then they'd give away a couple weeks' worth of formula to new mothers - for the health of the baby, of course. Then when the free supply ran out, mom was likely dry and she'd have to pay full freight for the very expensive baby formula to keep the baby from starving. To poor people with no money. Despicable. The loggers are going to love their battery powered chainsaws.
Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy I actually have an "electric" chain saw, that has to be plugged in. Needless to say we have several long extension cords. I use it to cut down trees in the wood lot in the back of our property. I have a gas powered chain saw, too. But it is always a pain the ass to start if it hasn't been run in weeks. The overall efficiency of an electric or battery powered "anything" is debatable, as to 1) thermodynamic efficiency of the electricity generating source; gas, coal, windmills, solar cells, unicorn farts? 2) power transmission losses between the generator and the play you plug in.
