for clarity ... dory is a small, shallow-draft boat, about 5 to 7 metres or 16 to 23 feet long. It is usually a lightweight boat with high sides, a flat bottom and sharp bows ... used for centuries for fishing ... says wiki.

73 There's this neat sense of movement from right to left. The form of the rocks on the beach, the brushstrokes on the cliffs in the back, the clouds, and the men themselves. The clouds are coming from the left, sure, but their movement is stopped by the wind coming from the right, they bunch up and start to fold backwards onto themselves--back to the left again.

This general, overall movement is emphasized by the bright yellow/tan in the men's clothes. I see and feel the force of their lurch leftward as they push the boat into the water. To counter this, the boat, also in bright colors, is a solid, horizontal form. It resists the movement of the diagonals and enhances the force of motion even more.

He's defined by his quest for vengeance and nothing else, and he knows it. He knows he's given up everything else out of his single-minded quest for the white beast of the seas, and he hates himself for it. That self-reflection, in particular one scene with Starbuck at night on deck where he pretty much admits it, is the heart of why I love the book.

I sometimes think I have a good idea if a painter is a severe misanthrope, or hates women, or hates himself by their work. Like that scandi dude, we see a lot of paintings from? Oh yeah, he likes the ladies, or at least one in particular. This guy here definitely has a type. Not judging, I don't see anything maleficient or necessarily disordered in the paintings and as a result would conclude he's a decent enough fellow. But he probably likes musicals and fashion model shows.

141 Looking at the painting some more. I think part of its appeal for me is the juxtaposition of round and straight objects. The clouds and sea-worn rocks, both in the foreground and the cliffs further back, against the straighter lines of the dory and the men's figures, makes for a sense of action. It also suggests the timeless wearing of the ocean, smoothing and rounding, versus the unworn (so far) boat and men. The sea will win eventually but there is a feel of time and continuation in the contrast.

Maybe I'm reading too much in to the image.

Similar to yesterday's discussion about the Mona Lisa. Seriously - take today's "great works of literature" - then take 100 high school and college grads. Have them answer, anonymously, if such and such book was "great". Would they read it again ?

You'll find that most of the "great works" get less than a 50% positive vote. I base this off a lifetime of discussions with people about that topic. They - get this - answer differently in a group.

Because it's mostly a virtue signal.

Natural immunity, on the other hand, recognizes not only the penis, but the landing gear, support struts, the capsule, thrusters, windshield, etc. If the next variant has a different shaped penis, the immune system will still recognize it as a lunar lander."
Posted by: Muldoon

Nice ... thanks.

My vague understanding, previous covids may have provided a lot of natural immunity, close enough so many people were mostly protected from this one ... and the variants.

Also I'm curious ... all natural immunity is probably not equal, as each person produces their own immune response which may be broader, but still may not recognize every part of the lunar lander, but enough parts? ... (some said maybe half the population had enough natural immunity from earlier covids, even if C19 was a modified "lunar lander".)

That diversity is good, as opposed to the mRNA which allows a variant to develop against a mass vaccination that is all the same (and leaky).

395 Reuters Article Headline: "Anti-Trump Republicans to back vulnerable Democratic lawmakers in 2022 congressional races"

It's about a group called "Renew America Movement (RAM)", whose leadership includes former Republican Governors Christine Todd Whitman of New Jersey and Bill Weld of Massachusetts.

RAM will endorse and in many cases campaign for 11 moderate Democrats, nine moderate Republicans and one independent running for the House of Representatives and Senate in the November 2022 elections, including Representative Abigail Spanberger of Virginia and Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, and Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, all Democrats locked in close contests. The group is also supporting Republican House members such as Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger from Illinois, who are among a handful of elected Republicans to denounce Trump and his baseless voter fraud claims.

Imagine this - young college guys and gals, waaay too much cheap beer, and a place named "The Oar House" .

The jokes just wrote themselves.

Toole really captured a lot of the Noo Awlins flavor with that. He dialect-spelled "children" as "chirren," which is the way people say it here, not the "chillun" that usually gets used in stories about the South. He was the first I ever read to do that.

The novel is funny, true. When a Nebraskan member of my writing group commented that she found it completely unfunny, I stopped listening to her. Not because the remark was insulting to NO or NO people (I'm the king of that) -- but because she clearly had no sense of humor at all.

I think we see the house out of the corner of our eye immediately. And it establishes "land" and tells us "the men have come from the land." Otherwise the whole scene could be mistaken for being at sea.

268 Things I remember from reading Moby Dick years before English Lit (American authors) in high school could ruin it for me.
a) Queequeg was a cool guy, definitely not from Kentucky or Ohio.
b) Whaling sounded like messy, dangerous, thrilling work. With some really great songs! It sounded like a great adventure.
c) Captain Ahab's mother didn't love him. (Who names their boy Ahab?!?) Also he needed to switch to decaf, get a hobby. Well, obsessive revenge is sort of a hobby.
d) Revenge is a no-winner story in the end.

EA would have to drop the entire Madden franchise going forward if they investigated the e-mails of everyone in the NFL.

Tom Brady knew what he was doing when he destroyed his cell phone and refused to allow law enforcement have it during "Inflate-gate". He knew then never to trust law enforcement who states they will only search the phone for things related to the investigation.

Gruden should have first pulled a Hillary Clinton and stated "What difference, at this point, does it make?" and then pulled a "The Wolf of Wall Street" and stated "I'm not fucking leavin'!" They still would have fired him instead of allowing him to "resign", but it would have been a great way to go out.

My brother is a Chicago police officer. He told me last year they don't bother enforcing half the laws on the books, because the DA doesn't bother to bring charges. Just like Baltimore's policy of allowing "space to destroy", Chicago is another city where most crimes are not policed, because it's a waste of the officers' time, since the DA won't bring charges.

So the mayor won't have to deal with anything, since the police don't do anything as it is already. She's probably looking forward to getting rid of a bunch of employees who have been getting paid to do nothing.

I honestly think the bigger, yet unreported, item in what Gruden said is that the Tennessee Titans were FORCED by the league to waste money and time on a draft pick because that pick was gay.

The Titans should now sue the league because that issue has been made public. They've lost untold millions of dollars from that wasted pick.

This would be interesting for my brother as, in addition to his day job as a Chicago police officer, he is also in Illinois Air Force National Guard.

So I wonder if his police union would tell him to stay home and then he gets called up to "police" the city anyway as a member of the IL National Guard.

344 330 But I recall out past Chalmette, down in Meraux, they sounded like New Yorkers to me. I later found they call it port city dialect or something.
Posted by: illiniwek

Way back, the mob got run outta New York and settled in New Orleans. Worked with a guy from NO that sounded just like he stepped out of Brooklyn. He'd never been to NY in his life.
Posted by: rickb223 at October 14, 2021 09:54 AM (OCTRt)

the reason for that is pretty fascinating, I think I saw this in the story of English. The reason for the similarity is that in the 1850's, fleeing the potato famine, a huge number of Irish immigrated to port cities around the world, especially New York and New Orleans. The accent is a remnant of how those Irish spoke, which is quite different than today's Irish.

354 There are a lot of theories about why the New Orleans accent can sound similar to a New York accent. I think the best one is just because both cities got the same immigrant ethnicities at the same point in time.

And the mob was in New Orleans first. It was Sicilians that immigrated to grow citrus crops.

we had some back and forth yesterday in the comments on whether California housing prices were soaring just like other sun belt states. Thanks to corporate purchases, the answer appears to be yes, for now. But imagine what will happen to the value of a $750,000 house when a 20 unit Section 8 apartment is built right next to it.
Posted by: Tom Servo at October 14, 2021 09:54 AM (trdmm)

I've spoken with a couple of people that have owned S8 housing, and they hate it. Rents from the gov't don't arrive on time, and they can change policy on a whim, blowing out any projected income you've initially calculated. While one 'could' create S8 housing, it's not the same as 'would' create it.

interesting ... an Irish guy I knew didn't have that accent, but was in politics and maybe adjusted. I imagine some communities stay more segmented and maintain their colloquial accents better. And many speak much differently with their family than in other settings.
