Now We Have A Silicon Shortage – Another Economic Debacle Brought To Us By Principled Free Traders™

Here we go again, with yet another global supply chain crisis, blindsiding those brilliant Principled Free Traders™ who never once considered that outsourcing every possible manufacturing job and mining operation could ever lead to empty shelves or lost economic activity.

This time it’s silicon, that amazingly abundant element that is at the heart of modern technology. There’s a shortage of it. And you’ll never believe this, China is overwhelmingly the world’s largest producer, at around 67% of global silicon production. The 5.4 million metric tons it produced in 2020 was more than 18 times as much silicon as the United States produced, which – shocker – has been dramatically reducing the amount of silicon it produces. But of course. Why produce critical materials in the USA if you can outsource them to communist China?

Russia is the second largest silicon producer. So, under the leadership of our best and brightest people, the western world is now relying on China and Russia for about 75% of global silicon production. Great job, smart people!

So just what is going on? Silicon’s 300% Surge Throws Another Price Shock at the World

The shortage in silicon metal, sparked by a production cut in China, has sent prices up 300% in less than two months. It’s the latest in a litany of disruptions, from snarled supply chains to a power crunch, that are creating a destructive mix for companies and consumers. The slashing of output in China, far and away the world’s biggest silicon producer, is the result of efforts to reduce power consumption.

And just what is silicon needed for? Just about everything.

It’s used in everything from computer chips and concrete, to glass and car parts. It can be purified into the ultra-conductive material that helps convert sunlight into electricity in solar panels. And it’s the raw material for silicone -- a water- and heat-resistant compound used widely in medical implants, caulk, deodorants, oven mitts and more.

With silicon being such a critical material, what has US production looked like? It declined 28% in 2019 compared to 2018, and further declined in 2020.

Silicon Production.JPG

For something as important as silicon, you’d think there’d be a push to increase US production. Well, you might think that if you were a normal patriotic American. But if you’re a Principled Free Trader™, your highest priority is destroying American jobs, because not only does offshoring mean abundant cheap labor, but as a bonus you get to mock and sneer at the blue-collar workers you put out of work.

And speaking of that cheap foreign labor…

“Hoshine Silicon recruits and employs Uyghurs and other minorities via state labor programs that aim to place them in factories. Researchers say these programs are a form of forced labor for residents who, faced with the threat of detention or other punishment, cannot refuse.”

Now to be fair, Principled Free Traders™ are quite open about their passion for the cheapest possible foreign labor, and there is nothing cheaper than slave labor. They just never considered that energy disruptions, or shipping bottlenecks, or pandemics, or political instability, etc might ever come in to play.

So here we are. Is there any good news in all this? Here’s a silver lining:

Solar Power May Be The Next Victim Of China’s Coal Shortage

Prices of silicon metal, used to make the material that comprises solar panels, have surged about 300% since the start of August after a top-producing province ordered production be slashed amid a power crunch. China dominates global solar production, with its coal generators powering many of the factories that make clean energy equipment.

Wait. What? There’s a silicon shortage, because of a coal shortage, which is resulting in a solar panel shortage, because it all relies on the burning of coal to make “clean energy” equipment.

A whole bunch of destructive economic fads embraced by our elites are falling apart because they rely on coal-fired energy from a communist country that uses slave labor. The only future role that is appropriate for the ruling class that got us into this mess is for them to be the subject of constant mockery and ridicule. In the meantime, let’s bring home manufacturing and mining operations, and let’s never let our national security be compromised again by Principled Free Traders™ and their political bedmates

For export, capital equipment and food. The US is actually overall one of the less trade reliant countries in the world on account of being such a large and diverse economic union. Small countries have to trade to get the things they can't practically produce themselves, while the US has the resources and technical capacity to produce virtually everything.

Yep. In fact, if it were ultra-conductive, it'd be useless for producing chips. The idea is to take something that doesn't conduct all that well, and dope it with electron donors or acceptors to generate free electrons or holes, whose behavior can be controlled by suitably biasing the doped silicon to make it conductive or not, i.e., to act as a switch.

130 What isn't there a shortage of now? I read about a glass shortage this year, which apparently is going to continue into next year. The silicon shortage probably isn't helping, and there's even a SAND shortage - all things required for making glass.

Distillers can't get enough glass for their bottles. Breweries can't get enough metal to make beer cans. The supply of everything is stop-and-go, lurching from one lack to another. I was struck by a passage from Victor Klemperer's 1930s Germany diaries. He said the Nazi government had announced a nation-wide 'Asparagus Festival', to provide cheap asparagus for the German people, out of the goodness of their hearts, naturally. Klemperer wrote that everyone knew it was because metal shortages made it impossible for get enough cans to process the fresh asparagus from that year's harvest, so it was being sold off at a loss in this way.

I used to be one. All-in all the global trade theory and most of the financial theories that went with them. Then something happened - well, two somethings, and they happened at the same time.

First, I lived in the post-industrial wasteland of Central New York. Some factories open, but many more closed. An angry place in indifferent repair for the most part. Some of this is NY's own doing, of course, but it followed the wider theme. Second, I saw an article in the Wall St. Journal in, I think, 2007 that commented on the notable condition of Washington Mutual paying a dividend that exceeded its net cash flow because the recapitalized interest on ARM loans added massively to profits but not to cash on hand. They financed the dividend payment.

Those two things began a long and fairly unpleasant journey for me that ended with me changing my positions.

The root problem is that the core thesis of free trade at all costs is flawed. The premise is twofold: first, that capital flows are optimized in a free trade environment and will seek maximal efficiency, and second that reciprocity is not needed because increased efficiency is still a net benefit even if the benefit is smaller than is hypothetically possible if free trade were symmetrical. The other major premise is that increasing wealth drives increasing liberalism. In short, that they become free before we become destitute.

The premises are wrong. They ignore two very important things. First, that governments exist and second that asymmetrical free trade is a temporary condition that is obviated by increasing wealth and popular demand for continued liberalization. The latter in particular does not manifest.

Ultimately, unrestricted free trade is a hypothetically nice idea that results in universal optimization. It suffers from essentially the same problem that communism does: it isn't realistic in a human environment. I am still not a protectionist, but I am now a symmetrical trader. Free trade is fine, but it has to happen in both directions.

And the core problem faced here of outsourcing our industrial base is emphasized by the failure of the system to acknowledge that governments exist and are not necessarily free and may not become free. The capital sought optimization and it found it - but at tremendous final cost. Our enemies now control vital industries. We have structural unemployment. We are vulnerable to supply shocks and shortages to a greater degree. Those asymmetrical and even cheating trade partners didn't liberalize, they often became even more draconian. The politics keep getting worse due to increasingly perverted incentives. Other subordinate assumptions - like welfare is as good as a paycheck because money is fungible - have also failed to materialize.

They were wrong. Their premises were wrong. And they failed to realize that capital efficiency is not the most important thing. It is important, but so is the general health of your national polity.

Rather than a single question it's more like a series of questions. Think from the perspective of a country like Saudi Arabia, how do you build a healthy society when comparative advantage means you produce primarily oil and rely on imports for every other good? So there is profit, societal impact, and foreign policy to consider but how each decision will affects things is relatively straightforward.

Markets generally will favor efficiency over robustness(which is why stockpiling for famines was traditionally a government responsibility).

195 Producing elemental silicon of the requisite purity for, e.g., semiconductor manufacture, not so easy.

Also, the method used for making high purity, single crystal silicon is called the Czochralski method. It involves drawing a boule of silicon from a big crucible containing molten silicon, which, of course, requires lots of power. As has been pointed out, the real trick is to control the impurities.

You have to know what you're doing, so I very much doubt that disgruntled Uyghurs are involved.

Yes, and I think there is no universal answer - that whole "general health" problem. Among first-world countries? Sure. Symmetrical free trade with Canada or the UK - places with similar standards of living, labor conventions, etc. - is fine so long as it is symmetrical. With a slave state like China? No way, not even if it were symmetrical. Even without China-side import controls, they're using slave labor.

Most of the consequences of particular choices are reasonably well understood. There are trade-offs involved. Anyone selling unilateral free trade as a free lunch was mistaken or lying. It's not wrong to say that it is generally the most profitable though(for whom it is profitable is another question entirely). Managed trade has a lot of difficulties outside of the theoretical answer to questions though, primarily because of special interests.

416 Luckily my husband has like 300. Plus he fishes some out of the water hazards while he's waiting his turn. And has been known to stop and pick some up off the freeway next to the golf course.

One guy I play golf with is a noted ball hawk. He recently sold 5700 golf balls to a fishing resort owner so his clients could pound golf balls into a field when off the river. I think he got $700 for them.

417 For something as important as everything you'd think there'd be a push to increase US production.

Seriously, that's been the most flabbergasting part of this entire thing. We're watching in real time what happens when we don't manufacture goods in the U.S., and we're still sending jobs overseas.

Till 1913, the federal government was kept lean by subsisting mostly on tariffs. The 16th amendment changed that and opened the spigot for wealth confiscation.

1792 - 1913 , that's 121 years they got by on tariffs, and I'm not talking about the "picking winners and losers" kind like Trump enacted. I'm talking across-the-board on all imported goods.

Repealing the 16th amendment would kill a lot of birds with one stone (oops, those are rhetorical birds, Sefton so don't ban me). It'd starve the beast and force the shutdown of Welfare programs like Socialist Insecurity, as well as culling the thousands of jobs for money shufflers.

And going back to tariffs would be a tremendous boon to US producers.

Uh, her insta is full of pics of herself in bikinis and whatnot.
A see-through dress is not terribly noteworthy. Yikes

419 Industrial production in USA grew strongly till around 2000, and it has been up/down slight increase since that.

fred.stlouisfed.org/series/INDPRO

employees in manufacturing was (call it) flat post WW2 to 2000 (higher 70s to 90s), then declines maybe 25%.

Efficiencies allowed us to produce with fewer workers ... plus we exported production (even as we consumed even more, I'd guess)

420 197 It is so reactive it "burns" in water.

There's some fluorine compound they were investigating as a rocket fuel in the 50s that reacted with pretty near everything. If you spilled it on the ground it'd eat through everything (concrete, most metals, soil, unlucky worms, whatever) until it had all reacted.

Dioxygen Diflouride, or "FOOF" both as a play on its chemical structure, as well as the onomatopoeic representation of how unstable and explosive it is.

423 I think the "Principled Free Traders (tm)" should be sent to work alongside the Uyghurs in the silicon mines.

Posted by: Germanicus at October 12, 2021 04:18 PM (kB491)

424 Silicon is not "ultra-conductive". It's actually a rather poor conductor of electricity; a literal "semi-conductor", in fact. Which is why it works in solar panels.

And there is absolutely no scarcity of the raw materials to make it. It comes from common sand, which is mostly quartz, silicon dioxide, SiO2.

What probably is limited is the refining capacity needed to recover pure elemental silicon from the quartz sand that comprises the ore. And it has to be very, very pure to begin with, then it is doped with precise amounts of selected impurities to get the desired properties of the resulting crystals.

425 hmmm, sounds like the reporter is confusing silicon metal, the pure element, and silica, silicon dioxide a. k. a. quartz.

427 Not much does occur in elemental form. Except for some of the diatomic and noble gasses, I can't think of many.
Posted by: sniffybigtoe at October 12, 2021 02:55 PM (Y5qcH)

Off the top of my head: Helium, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon, Copper, Gold, Silver, Iron, possibly Lead, Sulfur, Platinum, Palladium, and the noble gases. Oh, Arsenic and Antimony, maybe Bismuth?

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 12, 2021 04:34 PM (7+m5I)

428 China is overwhelmingly the world's largest producer, at around 67% of global silicon production.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at October 12, 2021 02:38 PM (YqDXo

Why the hell aren't the globalists exporting some of THAT surplus? I'd trade half the faculty of an Ivy League school for a cargo container of silicon any day.

Posted by: Oldcat at October 12, 2021 04:38 PM (eoQWY)

429 Elemental? Nope. Coke is coal that's been heated to drive off the hydrogen.
