Boji, a Street Dog That Loves Riding Public Transportation, Becomes Istanbul's Most Famous Commuter

Here's the mid-day Happy Thread. And it's a good one.

boji.png

Boji has become a worldwide sensation.

A train-hopping street dog named Boji is Turkey’s most beloved travel buddy.

...

And it's always a treat to meet the golden-furred, floppy-eared pooch while patronizing public transit-- trains, buses and even ferries -- throughout Europe's largest metro area.

"You take the train and, suddenly, you see Boji," said Metro Istanbul's Aylin Erol. "You just smile and catch the moment, really."

Municipal officials in Istanbul track the drifting dog's journeys through a microchip, they told Reuters.

"We noticed a dog using our metros and trains and he knows where to go. He knows where to get out," Erol explained, and added, "it's like he has a purpose."

Boji's daily treks extend up to 20 miles as he stops through some 29 metro stations, they also said, including one that recently put him on a boat to the Princes' Islands archipelago, southeast of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara.

Records of the pup’s pilgrimages suggest his favorite mode of transport is the city's historic tram lines, but he also frequents the subway. The name -- Boji -- was bestowed by Metro Istanbul workers, who noted that the hobo hound preferred to ride the middle of a subway carriage, called boji in Turkish.

I just got an email from Barack Obama: "Actually, in Indonesian, boji means 'meals on wheels.'"

Obama ate a dog, you know.

There is a paper out that finds some unexpected immune cross-reactivity between poliovirus and Covid. They've found that recent vaccinees of the IPV (inactivated poliovirus vaccine) have a significant response against the Covid virus.

This is just, well shit.

So, would you believe that the IPV, the modern incarnation of the original Salk vaccine might do more good against Covid that the current vaccines?

The effect is only there for a short time after IPV injection, apparently. I'm digesting this paper, now.

125 During the depression, the term "walking on his heels" meant that someone was having a hard time, and had to walk favoring the heel of the shoe because the soles were worn out.

I saw it used in an old movie and it took me a while to find the meaning. So let me share that here to spread the knowledge.

According to John Ringo, that's common to mohammedans, because it's a lot easier to put your shoes on after prayers if the heels are flattened into slip-ons. When you bang your head on the floor 6 times a day, that shit gets old in a hurry.

Also means that out of habit, mohammedan men shuffle their feet when they walk, regardless of the type of shoes they wear.

Huh, I used to see that all the time in Silicon Valley with Chinese and Taiwanese guys (not as often now). I figured it was mostly because they're used to slides back home, but felt compelled to wear Western fashion like Nike's. So this is the compromise. Don't think there's any other reason for them besides not being used to regular shoes. And standing on the toilet seat to squat.

190 That's something I've wondered about. To be an almost universal behavior, there must be some evolutionary factor in favor of it, right? Dogs will often face into the wind to catch scents but where in their evolutionary history would they have found an advantage in facing into a 60 mph head wind often enough to select for it?
Posted by: Oddbob at October 08, 2021 03:40 PM (nfrXX)

I think they like the sensation of the wind on their face and ears, honestly.

Conversely, there would have to be a lot of rats/rodents/vermin in order to support that size population of cats.

Ajax likes wind in his nose. He will stuff his nose in an air vent in the car as much as he sticks his head out the window.

But why? If the evolutionary biologists are right*, such a universal preference should have some purpose related to survival or procreation.

* and I'm not saying they are or aren't...

My mom's cocker loved riding in any conveyance until they got rear ended on the freeway in the white shark (1983 Mercedes 300SD) nearly killing the dogs in the backseat. She was extremely skittish of cars (not golf carts) after that. Her cousin couldn't care less. I figure travelling in a car for a dog must be like the space-pod scene from 2001 A Space Odyssey, except instead of swirling psychedelic colors it's all scents whizzing by.

In a normal world this would be the biggest thing ever. Of course we are in a clown world where evil clowns are trying to create a world wide evil empire of misery, but still, I think we should all go and get our shots to travel to Cote d'Ivoire next month.

210 From a dog's usual perspective (low to the ground, moving at walking/running speed), riding in a car, high off the ground at tremendous speed with so much scenery flying by must feel exhilarating.

211 >> In a normal world this would be the biggest thing ever.

Just imagine: I don't know how long this cross-effect lasts. But suppose, even if it's temporary, it's sufficiently sterilizing. Ie, keeps replication and transmission down enough.

So, all we would've had to do is just give everybody a booster of the polio shot -- which is very safe -- and we could've killed Covid.....

Don't know if that would be the case. Depends on how close to sterilizing and how long the effect is.

Questioning it further: if COVID-19 was genetically modified (Gain-of-Function or other wise), is it possible that some of the modifications were based off the Polio virus, among others?
