The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"If it's consensual from the husband, it's not an affair. But it's not different to when I was single, the really big difference is that I come back to my husband at the end of it and I know that he's happy with me doing it so that makes me happy."Rae Nemetsky

Quote II

"To whoever the fuck doesn't like the United States of America, may God bless you, but fuck you at the same time," Rapper Pit Bull

Quote III

“You alone are on high, and you’ve made these decisions, a lawyer with no scientific background, no medical degree.

This is an arrogance, coupled with authoritarianism that is unseemly and un-American." Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY)

Quote IV

"I'd rather them keep a Confederate monument than a statue of Clarence Thomas. That's how much I don't like the idea," Georgia State Rep. Donna McLeod (D)

In related news, St. George's statue was vandalized.
Video released by cops early Monday captures the moment a vandal on a skateboard tossed paint on a George Floyd statue in Union Square.

The clip caught the unidentified suspect ducking behind a nearby statue of the late Rep. John Lewis around 10:15 a.m. Sunday and messing with something in his backpack before he skateboarded toward the Floyd installation.

He is shown hurling gray paint on the face and base of the Floyd bust and then riding off, heading north on the west side of the park.

Two people — apparently an adult and child — were standing nearby as the suspect flung the paint, thwarting the adult’s attempt to take a photo of the statue, the footage shows.

Could the simple 2 stroke leaf blower be the cause of our doom? According to some it is.

Pound for pound, gallon for gallon, hour-for-hour, the two-stroke gas powered engines in leaf blowers and similar equipment are vastly the dirtiest and most polluting kind of machinery still in legal use.

According to the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the two-stroke leaf blowers and similar equipment in the state produce more ozone pollution than all of California’s tens of millions of cars, combined.

And according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency, two-stroke engines expose their operators to unusually high levels of carcinogens, including benzene and other dangerous substances. From an EPA paper:

I wonder what Skippy thinks of the various two stroke engines located here at Casa Misanthrope.

No you fucking jackass, you were not taken out of context. Fauci, The Fraudster, backs off his weekend comments. I believe he's been afflicted with diarrhea of the mouth.

Dr. Anthony Fauci on Monday said that he would be spending Christmas with his family, and encouraged others to do the same, after saying over the weekend that it was too soon to tell if Americans could spend the holiday together.

“I will be spending Christmas with my family. I encourage people — to have a good, normal Christmas with your family,” he told CNN host Kate Bolduan.

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the chief medical advisor to Joe Biden, called reports quoting what he said on Sunday “disinformation.”

“I said something over the weekend that was taken completely out of context,” Fauci told Bolduan. “I was asked what could we predict for this winter for like December and Christmas.”

Mentally ill loser named Sportswoman of The Year.

Despite failing on all Olympic lifts, transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard was recently named University of Otago’s “sportswoman of the year.”

Per the Otago Daily Times “The Queenstown athlete became the first openly transgender woman to compete at the Olympics when she contested the women’s 87+kg at the Tokyo Games this year. The 43-year-old was eliminated from the event when she failed to make a successful lift in the snatch. Her achievement was recognised with the sportswoman of the year award at University of Otago and OUSA Blues and Golds Awards on Tuesday.”

Hubbard said in response to the award “It is not possible for athletes to complete at the Olympic level without the encouragement and aroha of friends, family and supporters. This award belongs to everyone who has been part of my Olympic journey.”

Hubbard was knocked out of the Tokyo Olympics after failing all 3 lift attempts.

HERO TO THE END Hero dad died saving his four-year-old son after kayak capsized by holding up toddler while treading water

A HERO father died after saving his four-year-old son from drowning when their kayak capsized, it has been reported.

Peter Flinch, 33, was forced to hold his toddler in the air and tread water when the disaster struck in Gwandalan, Australia at 5.30pm on Friday.

You can have your cake and eat it to. But, it will cost you.

We are seeing some couples forgo the traditional wedding cake in favor of modern alternatives, like towers of cheese and pie stations, but most weddings in the U.S. still include a wedding cake. After all, it’s one of those long-standing traditions that doesn’t just end that easily.

But it turns out that some newlyweds may turn a little overcontrolling when it comes to who eats their cake and how many slices, exactly, they have. This is what happened to one wedding-goer who recently shared a screenshot of a message they received. The text said “Hey, so we were just looking at the CCTV and saw that you had two pieces of wedding cake.”

The couple announced that each guest had to contribute towards the cake and pay £3.66 per slice! As you can imagine, this unusual approach didn’t go unnoticed and people on the r/weddingshaming subreddit where the story was posted just couldn’t miss a chance to comment on the absurdity of this situation.

And just like that, there was one less criminal. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

An armed customer witnessing a robbery at a Texas fried chicken restaurant last week sprang into action — fatally shooting one gun-toting suspect and wounding the other, reports said.

The wild scene unfolded at Church’s Chicken in Port Arthur at about 8:45 p.m. Friday, KDFM reported.

The duo of crooks fled the fast foot eatery after they were shot. But they were soon located and one died at an area hospital, police said.

The other suspect is expected to recover.

Too Misanthropic? How about this.

William Shatner is our Feel Good Story of The Day.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Star Trek’s Captain Kirk is rocketing into space this month — boldly going where no other sci-fi actors have gone.

Jeff Bezos’ space travel company, Blue Origin, announced Monday that William Shatner will blast off from West Texas on Oct. 12.

Wish I could have got a pic of the scenery south of Chicago. Dozens of windmills, miles and miles of cornfield, much of it harvested, much of it not. Contrast of historic basic necessity and frivolous insane green-mania.

I cringe to admit that my record of going maskless ended today. Wore one for about ten seconds, heading for our table at the Greek Islands. Almost worth it for the great food, as ever, but, oh, how depressing the masses of sheep complying or else! I understand better now, this madness isn't going to end any time soon, is it? If ever.

So the premise is about this chick who was part of a science experiment that escapes. She spends her nights as a costumed vigilante (black outfit, heels, cape, big ole hat) and during the day she works as a male high school teacher. It's a gender bender.
Going into the comic I knew it was pretty R-rated but now that I have a few volumes it's...um...jeezum crow! Like...holy shit! It's basically porn with a plot. This shit is drenched in sex. Wow! Now you're not seeing anyone, uh...stuffing the envelope but the heat is cranked up all the way. I'm not complaining but goddamn I really need an English translation.

Odds on her having been sexually abused as a child and now married to a controlling husband who enjoys degrading her?

San Diego County getting strong thunderstorms. Very unusual this time of year. Crazy lightning. Drove into a hailstorm on I8 and everybody slowed down to 25 to keep from cracking their windshields.

I saw thunderheads forming over East County when I was driving home. Big reddish horizontal color band about half way up the clouds. I realized it was smoke from a brush fire somewhere.

I modestly propose we develop a vaccine against social media.

It should be as close to sterilizing as we can get it. Once you get the shot, your desire to log on to any such sites should go to zero.

There are no animal reservoirs for social media users (although animals are exploited greatly by social media) so complete eradication of the social media plague is possible.

352 Ensconced at the Upstate lair with the senior dog for a semi-work related trip (but mostly an excuse to take a long drive and be a semi-solitary coot for a day and a half). Will meet a potential client in the AM, get some other work done then hang with doggo in the back till mid afternoon when I take a trip to a nearby range and sight in a 30-30 for deer this fall. Then back to the house. Take doggo to the creek and make a dinner + bourbon.

Truth be told solitary jaunts are the best when you know you're only away for awhile and will soon be back to the wife and kids. Or remaining one at home anyway, having sent the eldest Zek offspring off to school this fall. We do miss him, but are very happy that he seems to be launching well into his own life that's his and not ours after all.

Fall makes one elegiac. But not necessarily in a bad way. Night all and God bless.

368 Probably would have been wiser for him NOT to have appointed Hitler as Chancellor if he was actually going to stand in Hitler's way.I

It reads to me like the German conservatives and the Wehrmacht suffered from nobility overconfidence. They were terrified of the German commies and figured the Austrian corporal had to be a buffoon. His SA thugs could beat the Red mobs down and certainly the upper class Germans could control this upstart buffoon...many times they thought about deposing ol Adolf, but he kept winning everything thru 1940 so they figured Adolf had too much
public support. Then when things started to go really bad they were all fighting for their own lives..if they had taken Hitler out in 1939 the world would have only wanted the Nazi leadership gone..by 1942-43 it was unconditional.surrender or nothing

477 Drove home today from sister's funeral last weekend. It was an unbelievably gorgeous fall day in Wyoming. Drove up Tensleep canyon and down Crazy Woman canyon. Saw some snow in the shady spots in the forest. it was nice to just be out there in this beautiful world. But I still miss my sister. And my Dad.

Yes. September 17. It was unexpected, sort of. She had immune deficiencies, which took its toll on her over the years. My brother donated a kidney, and she recovered wonderfully. She was exercising, walking, even working up to jogging. She looked so good, back to her sarcastic self. But then she got a cold (maybe the 'rona, but, who the hell knows), but she succumbed to pneumonia and a pulmonary embolism.

But as a general rule, the more people say Fuck Off, the harder the 'rule' is to enforce. It's like the rule to require NYers to "register" their AR-15s or face felony charges... Fewer than 1% complied. Maybe I have the wrong state but I do have the right result.

And so do they. They do not have the resources to lock us all up. And Smith and Wesson flees Massatwoshits for friendlier climes. Go figure.

504 I don't know if the Chinese would actually do the Taiwan invasion thing unless they know something I don't about how the Taiwan armed forces would crumble. Seems like if they have to level it to take it and the Taiwanese Army fights hard it would be an unprofitable bloodbath. It's been a long time since the Chinese public would believe that Taiwan had any chance of taking China back from the Commies like their idea was in the 50s, and I don't think the Chinese leadership thinks getting a lot of soldiers killed would make the public happy. This is the era of big unforeseen letdowns and I suppose the Taiwan elite could be as bad as everywhere else and fold for a big enough personal payoff but otherwise I don't see it happening no matter what Biden does

512 Quick story.
My mom has a couple of friends. Really good, decent couple. They're late 60s-ish. Lovely people. So last week they were doing this and that and the husband was in his shop doing stuff and I guess working a power saw. Table saw? Dunno. Dude was sawing. So he's doing his thing, wife is doing her thing but next thing everyone knows blood is flying everywhere and he's screaming.
Go to ER, airlifted to San Antonio. Long story short they amputate the index finger but manage to reconstruct his thumb.
Now I mention is because these fine, lovely people (and I truly mean that) were terribly concerned about the pandemic. Took all the precautions and so on. From what I'm told, dude had his accident because of one moment of carelessness.
My point is that there are the things we can't control and the things we can. There's no use in worrying about those things we have no control over. You can take every precaution but ultimately nothing stops an act of God. But we are also surrounded by big dangerous things we can control and THOSE things are definitely the ones to be mindful of. Take your eyes off those things and that's when the really bad shit happens.

Various TV shows would sometimes use them if they wanted to highlight a song but couldn't get the band to perform on the show. I think even Ed Sullivan ran a few of them.

Posted by: Pug Mahon, Keith's Son at October 04, 2021 11:24 PM (x8Wzq)

520 Also, sometimes the "promo films" were actually clips of bands' performances on various obscure TV shows. For instance, MTV would run a "music video" of Santana performing Black Magic Woman in 1971, which was actually the clip of them lip-syncing and pretending to play to the actual single, on a European top-of-the-pops show.

Posted by: qdpsteve at October 04, 2021 11:24 PM (L2ZTs)

521 Taqiy, you're welcome.

At the end of the 1960s, when the Beatles were too huge to bother to show up on a TV program, Ed Sullivan would occasionally run their promo films for various singles, for instance. I think there was one for Hey Jude, at least.

Posted by: qdpsteve at October 04, 2021 11:26 PM (L2ZTs)

522 The bands of the 60s appeared on TV shows, and some performances were filmed for movies, and I have seen a few where the members were filmed lipsynching to the original recording decades later. The Beatles did a few promo films for singles, and so did some other bands. They took that footage and edited it to look like videos often during the era when VH-1 was popular. You didn't used to be able to get practically anything on YouTube

Long before there were music videos, there were musical film shorts called "soundies". Sometimes these were played in viewing booths that worked like jukeboxes. Drop in a coin, and hear the band, and see them play.

530 and also, clearly Eric Burdon was not actually singing full-on in that video, he was mouthing the words. Singing that requires a lot of effort. So, the video was the band going through the motions.

Still, I love that song. House of the Rising Sun makes the Beatles look like the fags they are.

534 I think you don't see a ton of "promo films" for hits of the 1960s/70s because bands figured showing up to perform on various shows was good enough, as well as their touring.

Also, there was no network or place guaranteed to run those films, so I'd bet a lot of bands, when asked to do one, often said "no thanks."

Then in the 1980s when it was all but certain that they could get their "promo film," now a "music video" played on either MTV, Friday Night Videos or Night Flight (which seemed to run a lot of videos MTV shied away from), they decided, let's go for it.

543 Pug: I believe for years, BBC's program Top Of The Pops was notorious for insisting bands lip-sync their latest hit, even if the band *wanted* to perform live.

So many, many bands put next to zero, or often times actually zero, effort into pretending they were doing anything but lip-syncing. They'd play the wrong instrument, take a nap in the middle of the appearance, etc etc.

549 I was actually lucky enough to see all the original Animals when they got together again in the early 80s and went on tour and put out an album. The new stuff wasn't very good but they did the classics of course and I remember an extended organ solo on Rising Sun that was very, very good.

You know, I bought that album, 'Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted". I thought it was pretty doggone good. Burdon's cover of the Dylan song, "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" is so dark and haunting:

557 Taqiy, the Good Vibrations clip is actually a good example of an early music video/promo clip.

There was no way it could be performed live, with all the effects the band and show wanted to include. The whole thing was made movie-style, segment by segment, with the effects everyone wanted to use, assembled and then played when Ed Sullivan introduced the Beach Boys.

I *do* believe Beach Boys, to keep up the appearance of a 'live set,' did a straight live re-recording of the song at the Ed Sullivan theater, to use as a soundtrack to the segment. But I also don't believe it was performed live in front of an audience, at all. It was a finished videotape being played back.

Because it was all done on videotape, it looked like the rest of the show, so people at home might have thought it *was* a live performance.

Posted by: Sharkman at October 04, 2021 11:41 PM (N1+1o)
--------------------

Lots of people think Japan is a peaceful country. It is not. Japan is a warlike country with a peace forced upon it. It's always been my assumption that, should things get too exciting in the Pacific, there is a plan. Imagine a man in a small office in a Japanese shipyard. A phone on his desk will ring, he'll answer it, listen, and respond, "Hai!" He will then flip a comically large switch from the "oil tanker" setting to the "aircraft carrier" setting, then return to his desk.

The Japanese are smart, violent to the point that they'd give the mullahs pause, and with a long history of killing Chinese in wholesale quantities. We should have urged them to openly rearm decades ago. A strong Japan, with a barely-restrained Imperial Fleet prowling the Pacific, would well serve American interests as well as Japanese.

586 Tossing a few pennies to the Animals thread. The mid sixties version of this band was a killer cover band of Rock n' Roll and the Blues. Where they came up short was on the song scribbling side of things which put them at a disadvantage to the other 60s acts. Still those cover recordings are something marvelous and have completely stood the test of time, the House of the Rising Sun in particular. The links are to a couple of live performances and while the sound is typical 60s quality if you listen through that you can hear what a spot great band they were. The recordings are a cleaned up version of them live and when got put down on vinyl was flat out great. I can only imagine that hearing them live at that time was a *booosh* kind of thang.

591 >> what is the closest thing to a single "perfect" food in terms of protein/fat/carb combination?

I don't think there is such a thing. No single food is going to contain all the macro- and micronutrients you need. That's where the term "balanced diet" comes from (although a lot are full of crap on what a proper balance really is).

I've seen list of basic foods you can survive on. So rather than one food, you can think of what's the minimum number of single food items a person could live off with nothing else added.

Then there could be engineered foods, think Ensure and the like. You might could engineer some "single" thing that would allow you to live off.

But, it would probably taste awful and drive you crazy after a while.

I saw the Beatles in 1966. The teen screaming drowned out the band. Still I can remember them blowing up Twist and Shout - I never heard it so good until I heard Springsteen and E Street band blew me away in the mid 80s. Mid 1960s PA systems were geared to halls where people gave golf claps at the end of a song. They never stood a chance against what this music unleased in the audience. By the later 1960s this was more or less solved by using a wall of amps which today is making hearing aid companies lots of money. The Beatles songwriting is on par with anything ever written and their studio work came from a place that is incomprehensible. They were and still are that great.

619 The amp solution was coming in about 1967, with bands like Blue Cheer and Deep Purple who were the first to stack up the amps. But the Beatles had broken up by the time they could take advantage of those innovations.

I know that video well. The songs and the playing are in place very few musicians have reached at any point in music history. I have had the good fortune to hear McCartney and Waters a few times in the last decade or so. The only way I can express how great their talents are is to say they are musical. That is where the poetry of sound exists and it is a rare, rare thing. After that I have nothing. And what is not obvious is the great bands they have at this time do not make them better, they drag their musicians up to their level.

*Genda in post war Japan was part of the delegation that selected Lockheed's F-104 Starfighter for Imperial service. The Japanese for awhile would give each airplane type a name, the F-104 became the Eiko or "Glory."

624 I don't think there is such a thing. No single food is going to contain all the macro- and micronutrients you need. That's where the term "balanced diet" comes from (although a lot are full of crap on what a proper balance really is).

Right, I know that, but what single food comes out of the gate the closest? Oatmeal has pretty good amount of protein for a grain. Peanut butter would be gnarly on an extended basis but it is filling and high energy.

Most "survival" bars in liferafts are some composite sawdust textured concoction.

When Colin Fletcher walked the length of California in 1958 he subsisted largely on mashed potatoes w/gravy and dehydrated meat bars. He also ate a shitload of sugar, or foods/candy containing it. About 4 pounds or so a
week. This makes sense too, refined carbs are just the ticket during strenuous exertion.

Re space turds. See the infamous turd incident during Apollo 10 (dress rehearsal for the actual landing). In transit, someone observed a turd floating in the cabin.

It was mystery, as all three crew members denied it was theirs.

While we know the first man to eat in space, and a lot of other firsts, there are some such "where no man has gone before" types whose identities are kept secret. There is the first man to take a dump in space. They had to carefully monitor all that, and determine the parameters so to speak. And the first man to puke in space.

And, with womyns in space, believe it or not, there is the first woman to menstruate in space. That was a big deal. At first, they used some drugs to suppress it, but then, in some internal feminist furor, they decided to go for it. Some were afraid there would be problems, but some woman astronaut did it, and proved it to work fine.

And then there was the first man, to you know, jack off in space. Now, whether or not that was actually officially monitored is doubtful. It was sort of like, "you work that out on your own. We won't ask, you don't tell".

Wankels are loud. When the tip seal uncovers the exhaust port, combustion is still going on in the travelling chamber. They have a two-stroke sort of rap to them.

I put a mazda 12A Wankel into a Triumph Tr7 for a friend. There was no way at all that the Mazda thermal reactor would fit, so we had an exhaust shop fab up tube headers. The car sounded like two angry chain saws, and the header tubes would glow red hot. but they never failed. He may still have that car.

A final tale before beddy-bye time.

At America's Best Greek Restaurant this afternoon. Chicago rules: masks when you're standing, not if you're sitting holy hell's bells. A couple near us moves from a two-seater to a four-seater table two feet away. They put on their masks when they get up to move, take them off when they sit down. A bit later, a waiter, older fellow, walks by, and the Karen of the couple prods the waiter to pull the mask up over his nose. I didn't get a chance to corner the waiter and say, that's a great nose, be proud of it, don't let the Karens wear you down. Also never got a chance to corner the Karen and pound her authoritarian ass into the pavement. I just left.

Glad to report that, once outside the Windbag City, the State still required masks for all inside, but half the staff at every stop, and most of the customers, were mask-resistant. A small hope for the future.

Okay, really, off to bed now.
