Daily Tech News 30 September 2021

Top Story

  • 96% of third-party containers deployed to the cloud contain known vulnerabilities. (ZDNet)

And 63% of code used to deploy cloud solutions is also insecure.

Basically if you follow the latest standards and best practices in deploying a containerised cloud solution, you're fucked.

I use containers - both the old and new servers are containerised - but for isolation, not for deployment. And I certainly don't use third-party containers for production (and rarely even for development).

    Docker... Basically sucks.

Tech News

  • U.S. needs to work with Europe to slow China's innovation rate, says Commerce Secretary Raimondo. (CNBC)

That headline struck me as still more paid propaganda for China from the mainstream press, but that's unusual for CNBC. It's actually a direct quote:
If we really want to slow down China's rate of innovation, we need to work with Europe. ... We have to work with our European allies to deny China the most advanced technology so that they can't catch up in critical areas like semiconductors. ... We want to work with Europe, to write the rules of the road for technology, whether it's TikTok or artificial intelligence or cyber.
That doesn't mean it's not paid propaganda; it's just not CNBC getting paid off. Also the Biden administration has the IQ of cold soup.

  • Phison has shown a new PCIe 5 SSD controller for both server and client devices. (Tom's Hardware)

Toshiba already showed off controllers for server SSDs, but the client models are new.

These will support transfer rates up to 14GB per second. Which is a lot.

  • The users are always wrong. (UTK)

But so are the programmers, and so are the managers. The secret to success is to never try to do anything.

  • Russia has arrested the head of a cybersecurity company on charges of high treason. (Bleeping Computer)

Because he wouldn't roll over for the intelligence agencies running the ransomware gangs.

  • Digital pickpocketing the Apple Pay way. (Bleeping Computer)

Hackers can spend unlimited amounts on your Visa card from a locked iPhone without the phone ever leaving your pocket. Apparently does not work with Mastercard or with Android devices.

Researchers notified Apple of this a year ago.

  • An entirely different attack has been making the rounds on Android. (Bleeping Computer)

Malware embedded in at least 200 apps on the Play Store has been signing people up to unwanted paid subscriptions. The apps have been removed but that doesn't mean the subscriptions have been cancelled, and it certainly doesn't mean anyone is getting their money back.

19 96% of third-party containers deployed to the cloud contain known vulnerabilities.

Back when I was gainfully employed (and those were dark times indeed), the company I worked for decided "Hey, we aren't a software company, so we shouldn't write software. We're going to start buying software from people who know what they're doing. So they laid off a bunch of developers and went on a software buying spree.

At the end of it they were spending more money, had lost control of their business process ("the software won't allow us to do that"), and their money took what had been a core competence and competitive edge of the organization and turned it into a product all their competitors could buy off the shelf. As usual, the people who were responsible got promoted and moved on before it all hit the fan.

But in the end the worst part is they no longer have any idea what's in the code, since it's all proprietary. There are all sorts of security problems just waiting to blow up in their face, and there really isn't anything they can do about it, since the people who understood the company's core business process are all gone.

38 Just some random rambling, but I'm getting sick of the infrastructure scam.

When politicians talk about infrastructure, they're not talking about the interstate highways, or bridges, or anything the feds have a hand in. The support networks of technology, communication, and transport are not things they particularly care about.

They're talking about political infrastructure. The support network of political organizations - unions, megacorporations, NGOs, and contractors run by friends and family - that keep them in public office.

When they talk about spending $3.7 trillion on infrastructure, it's little more than admitting that they plan to dump the money on cronies, who will take their cut and pass it back at election time.

Then in another year or two, they cry great big crocodile tears about the state of our actual infrastructure, and run the same play again. The game ends when the torches and pitchforks come out.

Posted by: Cringe Biscuit at September 30, 2021 03:28 AM

No, that's not what those terms mean. Or, rather, that's not all that they mean. "Cloud" is about stuff "as a service". It's not just that there's a thing out there on the Internet, it's a thing that you can access in an automated way. It's kind of like the difference between having a premium movie channel on cable and watching premium movies on demand. (cont'd)

Your friend is a genius. Instead of sitting through a three hour remote meeting, where some complete tool is droning out a slideshow presentation in color schemes that make the eyes bleed, you just get to go:

48 "Containers" are about virtualization. Using virtualization means that you can do all kinds of nifty things like gather together all of the parts to put up, say, a major Web site for morons, and manage those parts separately from everything else. If you do it right, that means you can reduce downtime in the event of errors or even reduce the chances of having errors in the first place.

It seems to me that most people using the terms "cloud" and "container" don't have a clue about what they mean, but that doesn't mean that the terms don't have a meaning.

We were the top dog in product quality until about three or four years after that decision. Now all the big players have about the same quality (as perceived by the customers) because they're all using the same business practices encoded in the same 3rd party software.

And yeah, the people who made that decision had no idea what they were giving up. There's no way that company can distinguish itself now. Margins would be really thin if not for the fact the whole industry is a cartel.

The ironic part is it cost them more money in the end.

Why was trump allowed to insert partisanship into the previously politic free SCOTUS? We need Biden to pack the court with 4 more liberal judges to make it impartial again. 82 Morning all! Can anyone on this smart military blog explain to me what in perdition FXX is doing with their new Archer episodes? Trivial, I know, but it's so bizarre - they drop their newest episode on Wednesday at 10 PM Eastern, 9 PM Central... and then they air it again and again up until Midnight or so, with an occasional bloc for It's Always Sunny, then back to back programming with the new episode until the paid infomercials take over.

Again, it's not something of earth-shattering importance, but I don't see the strategy FXX is following here. The individual episodes are streamed on Hulu following the Wednesday on-air release, so it's hard to see what FXX thinks they're achieving here.

Per the prison data that just came out, the shots are 40% effective at preventing covid infection for the first two months, about 50% effective for months two through four, and only 30% effective after four months.

Fully vaccinated literally means you're slightly less likely to catch Covid-19 than the unvaccinated but you can still catch it, spread it, and die from it, all while risking side effects. Oh yeah, and every booster that you're now required to get to remain "fully vaccinated" comes with the risk of side effects.

Choose wisely.

Just substitute "Jew" for "unvaxxed."

We bonded because a lot of us were smokers (yes, mea culpa) and from the isolated areas where smoking was tolerated, one could speak freely.

Which is going around the moon to say that these highly competent and professional nurses told me again and again "Do not, under any conditions enter into the care of a hospital alone." This was pre-Covid, so if one extrapolates from there to 2021, then there may not be a word for how Hellish hospital care has become.

I'm willing to bet $1000 that's related to at least half of the nursing home deaths last year. There's no way of getting the info, of course, because it's beyond measuring, but staff brings a meal into the old person's room, sits it on a table somewhere, and comes back later to pick up the tray. They don't give a damn whether the old man ate. They certainly don't sit and visit.

Family comes in and visits, helps eat, helps with bathroom problems, tv, etc.

Lots of old people died from loneliness and neglect caused by the response to covid.

OTC amino acid supplement that's been on the market since the 60's, it has antiviral properties and is being used as a prophylaxis to fight COVID.

There are studies showing it's effectiveness, a number of big pharma companies have been undertaking trials with it and are probably readying a COVID pill utilizing it so of course the OTC version has to be removed from the market.

Anything that's cheap and or OTC has has to be eliminated to continue the Op.
