  • China has banned cryptocurrencies. (Tom's Hardware)

Well, except for one, controlled by China.

Be interesting to see what happens with video card prices. Hard drive prices are on their way back down after the Chia mining craze fizzled out, but video cards are in short supply even without the miners.

Anyway, I have an RTX 3060 now - albeit a laptop 3060 - which should do for a while.

  • A teenager on TikTok invalidated the garbage research of thousands of garbage scientists. (The Verge)

How it happened is you're lazy and stupid and your research is worthless.

  • Your face is not a bar code. (UCLA)

  • Your butthole on the other hand... (The Guardian)

  • A look at the Asus Zenbook 13. (Hot Hardware)

This one has a Ryzen 5800U, an OLED display covering 100% of DCI-P3, albeit only at 1080p, the four essential keys, two USB-C, one USB-A, HDMI, microSD... No headphone jack and soldered RAM, but oh well.

  • Using Nim instead of Python for data processing. (Benjamin D Lee)

Nim is essentially a statically typed and statically compiled Python. I say essentially because the languages are just very similar, not actually compatible.

There is a Python JIT compiler - it's called PyPy and it works very well - and in this case it's already nine times faster than Python, but Nim is three times faster again.

16 Morning, folk! Didn't intend to be up for another 45 minutes or so, but I dreamed something about driving my current car up a highway and into a pocket canyon with a Corvette Sting Ray (among other cars) parked in it. In the dream, I was enjoying the drive much as I did when I lived in CO and would take morning drives all around the metro Denver area and the Front Range. But I woke up as I drove out of the little circular (?) canyon. Wonder what that dream meant?

The audit has discovered 263,139 ballot images on the election system that are corrupt and unreadable TIFF format images. It is unclear what events could have resulted in this number of images being corrupted. The corruption of the ballot images in the election system only occurs for ballots that were scanned on or after November 1, 2020.

62 21,273 ballot images are entirely missing from the forensics images of the election equipment.
1. This means that there are electronic votes recorded, but no actual ballot images that correspond to the votes. 2. This makes it impossible to fully validate the results or confirm that the Election Management System (EMS) was not tampered with.

Which one, Heinlein's Venus or where I live? About the same!

The Venusians were kind of amphibian, as I recall, and could speak a kind of pidgin. They'd ask for "thigaret?", "cigarette."

By today's warped standards, Heinlein would be called a colonialist. But that was exactly the point of the story -- a kind of Uncle Tom's Cabin set on Venus, with the hero, a lawyer, insisting that the human Venus workers were not slaves. Then he gets drunk on a bet and finds himself indentured. He learns they can't leave until they pay off their debt, and it's almost impossible to pay it off.

119 The last $1,000 bills were printed in 1945 (oh, and they are worth upwards of $20k today as collectibles) and are still legal tender.

$1 in 1945, due to inflation would be worth $14.63 in 2021. Put a different way, a penny today would be worth .07 cents in 1945.

And yet we still make pennies, billions of them a year. And the maximum bill in circulation is the hundred.

Our gubmint makes cents, not sense.

You could buy a brand new briar pipe (admittedly on special promotions, but still) in 1945 for $1. You'd have a hard time finding even a cheap briar today for less than $30, more like $60.
