It also sued another mother of a special-needs student who runs a blog that published portions of the records. The documents are billing records showing how FCPS paid Hunton Andrews Kurth, a law firm that hired now-Virginia gubernatorial candidate McAuliffe as a top advisor, to do much of what parents say is the school system’s dirty work, including seeking to dismiss a class action lawsuit filed by special-ed parents who allege that their children were systematically physically abused by educators.

When I cast a vote, I'm not voting for my personal minister. That said Noem's behavior is disappointing. But the real reason why I wouldn't vote for her is that she's a typical politician. No one said being a true 100% conservative 100% of the time was going to be easy. But her constant backing down from the correct course of action is what prevents me from voting for her.

Not only does Siri exist on phones, but it also exists as a standalone "assistant" device. Apple (Siri), Google (OK Google), and Amazon (Alexa), have all released "smart" devices that sit in your home, listening in on everything that is said around it, waiting to receive instructions of some sort. They can be a neat little convenience. But at the same time, they also listen in on everything you say (they have to in order to do their work), have open connections to the internet (so they can pull information off of it), and are all provided by companies that are notorious for collecting more personal information about you than they probably ought to have.
One of my siblings got my parents a "Google@Home" device for Christmas a few years ago. My parents kept it out until my sibling returned home - which was half way across the country - and then put it into storage. I've never seen it since.

From time to time I hear people complaining that the NFT thing is dumb, but they're missing the point. With all due repsect to the excellent art threads (which I do sorely miss due to schedule conflicts), the true purpose of art has never been to appreciate it or to add to the culture. Not to the parties responsible. It exists to help rich people hide money. Same deal with high end collectibles. NFTs are great for that because you no longer have to carry a physical thing between vaults and freeports, you can just drop some dirty money and a decentralized network consisting of other people's computers will protect your investment.
The last couple of generations may not have produced very many paradigm-shift technologies, but they've worked hard to make corruption and graft exceedingly efficient.

This is likely the case. Current polling says he is ahead by 5 among likely voters which typically favors Republicans. But then you have to define likely voters and with the other variables you mention that becomes guesswork. Plus the elimination of Id for voters will have an impact.

The other prisons are less secure facilities for lesser offenders who have a lower chance of extreme violence.

as to the food shortage- experienced that first hand at a smart foodservice restaurant supply store. the shelves were straight outta eastern block yugoslavia. i asked one of the workers what the dealio was. he said one of their major distro hubs got taken out with covid and it caused a massive hiccup in the supply chain. this was in early september. he said he hoped things would be back to normal in mid october.

Starting in the late 90's the JIT (Just-in-Time) started up, so most stores don't have much in stock in the back, maybe 3 day's worth of foodstuffs. In an emergency (think earthquake in Kali), that'll F-up a lot of folks that haven't squirreled away an emergency supply. And for those that did, but didn't squirrel away some 2nd Amendment protection, they'll lose it.

afaik, it is a number of issues; long hauls and weeks away from home, many potential hires will pee hot, etc. As was mentioned above, it takes a special kind of person to do it successfully for any length of time. And they don't seem to be out there right now.
Also, from what I have noticed staffing my own shop - everyone that wants to work, is already working (except for very few newbies coming out of school). So, for me to land a new hire, I have to entice him/her from some other business. It's not easy to get them to leave wherever they are.

Driving across New Mexico with my Dad one summer, a bat hit the window. It's claw got stuck on the side mirror of the passenger side. For the next 400+ miles, that little devil twisted back and forth, until we slowed down and went into a gas station.

I watched "A Clockwork Orange" again last night for the first time in decades. Young Malcolm McDowell was a perfect fit for the role of Alex DeLarge throughout the story and Kubrick made the establishment characters about as unctuous and evil as you needed them to be.
What really struck me, though, was the excellence of the soundtrack, what with it giving "Ludvig Van's" Ninth Symphony prominent attention and an emphasis on electronic renderings of musical pieces, old and new. I had the soundtrack album on vinyl back in the day. For all I know I may still, but I'd have to dig it out of a fairly large cache of LPs that are still in this household.
I read Burgess' book back in the day, too, and liked it.

This is among my primary concerns. Either the feds raid my retirement accounts, or the crashing economy destroys them. And in both cases, if it's gotten that bad, inflation is likely high enough that the money's value is somewhere on par with the Weimar Mark or the Zimbabwe Dollar, i.e., it actually devalues the paper to print money on it. So, how to combat it? I know a lot of people get on the whole "buy gold and silver" train, but in the event of a total Venezuelan style collapse, it doesn't matter. If you're starving and so is the other guy, he's not going to trade you his sandwich no matter how many Mercury dimes you offer him. And in any collapse lesser than that, who knows what might hold value?
That said, I think we're headed for bad times, but not necessarily Mad Max times. I really don't know what to do with my assets, such as they are right now, but I know I should probably be doing *something*.

I think I'm gonna have to take my husband to the hospital. His chest/back is feeling tight.
He came down with Covid a week ago Tuesday. I got it Wednesday. I can't wear a mask, so I assume I will not get to be with him. A mask would just make me sicker than I already am.
In fact, we've been directly exposed to Covid at least half a dozen times without masks and we were fine. This time, my husband went to an event with mandatory masks and came home with Covid.

I miss them too. This year, much of the wetland areas around us have dried up. Now a business is being built in the wet areas so the bugs lose more habitat. It is sad to think that nights full of lightning bugs will only be a fond memory.

It was the Civil War that brought the coffee shortages to the fore, and substitutes, said to be awful. In the South it was practically unobtanium for even civilians. Many letters from home talked about Coffee. Most of the guys said they didn't know how to handle a war without it. They learned to add coffee after the water was boiling, not the preferred method, but a call to March in that circumstance meant the coffee would still be ready to drink.

Blindness does not seem to be a huge handicap for musicians. Canadian guitar player Jeff Healey was blind from a young age, cancer of the optic nerve. Ultimately returned and caused his death. He was a huge talent, and I had the pleasure of meeting him.

Super important -- The Regen-Cov mAB works best if administered within 4 days of symptoms. 70-85% reduction in severity, per Regen's maker's own reporting. I can hunt up a link if needed. If I come down with the Chinese flu, you can bet I'll be seeking a local hospital that has it; fortunately I'm in MS so the gubner ordered it to be used here. It's an IV infusion iirc, so has to be done at the hospital.

I recall a foodie journal went around several years ago and ordered "blackened redfish" from some pretty fancy places. They took samples for DNA analysis. Blame a couple of somewhat famous southern chefs for making the dish so popular.
Guess what? Nearly 90% of those served fishes were not redfish, aka red drum. The feds imposed a strict ban on catching them in fed waters, and the states had tight limits. So -- the restaurants made do, aka LIED.
