Angelo Codevilla, RIP

He was walking when he was struck by a drunk driver. He died of his injuries at the hospital.

This article from January shows his crusading, uncompromising spirit.

Texas v. Pennsylvania et al. did not deny setting rules for the 2020 election contrary to the Constitution. On December 10, 2020, the Supreme Court discounted that. By refusing to interfere as America's ruling oligarchy serves itself, the court archived what remained of the American republic’s system of equal justice. That much is clear.

In 2021, the laws, customs, and habits of the heart that had defined the American republic since the 18th century are things of the past. Americans' movements and interactions are under strictures for which no one ever voted. Government disarticulated society by penalizing ordinary social intercourse and precluding the rise of spontaneous opinion therefrom. Together with corporate America, it smothers minds through the mass and social media with relentless, pervasive, identical, and ever-evolving directives. In that way, these oligarchs have proclaimed themselves the arbiters of truth, entitled and obliged to censor whoever disagrees with them as systemically racist, adepts of conspiracy theories.

Corporations, and the government itself, require employees to attend meetings personally to acknowledge their guilt. They solicit mutual accusations. While violent felons are released from prison, anyone may be fired or otherwise have his life wrecked for questioning government/corporate sentiment.

Today's rulers don’t try to convince. They demand obedience, and they punish.

Russians and East Germans under Communists Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker in the 1970s lived under less ruling class pressure than do today's Americans. And their rulers were smart enough not to insult them, their country, or their race.

In 2015, Americans could still believe they lived in a republic, in which life's rules flow from the people through their representatives. In 2021, a class of rulers draws their right to rule from self-declared experts' claims of infallibility that dwarf baroque kings' pretensions.

In that self-referential sense, the United States of America is now a classic oligarchy.

The following explains how this change happened. The clarity that it has brought to our predicament is its only virtue.

He saw this coming long before most did. From 2010, on America's Ruling Class:

As over-leveraged investment houses began to fail in September 2008, the leaders of the Republican and Democratic parties, of major corporations, and opinion leaders stretching from the National Review magazine (and the Wall Street Journal) on the right to the Nation magazine on the left, agreed that spending some $700 billion to buy the investors' "toxic assets" was the only alternative to the U.S. economy's "systemic collapse." In this, President George W. Bush and his would-be Republican successor John McCain agreed with the Democratic candidate, Barack Obama. Many, if not most, people around them also agreed upon the eventual commitment of some 10 trillion nonexistent dollars in ways unprecedented in America. They explained neither the difference between the assets' nominal and real values, nor precisely why letting the market find the latter would collapse America. The public objected immediately, by margins of three or four to one.

When this majority discovered that virtually no one in a position of power in either party or with a national voice would take their objections seriously, that decisions about their money were being made in bipartisan backroom deals with interested parties, and that the laws on these matters were being voted by people who had not read them, the term "political class" came into use. Then, after those in power changed their plans from buying toxic assets to buying up equity in banks and major industries but refused to explain why, when they reasserted their right to decide ad hoc on these and so many other matters, supposing them to be beyond the general public's understanding, the American people started referring to those in and around government as the "ruling class." And in fact Republican and Democratic office holders and their retinues show a similar presumption to dominate and fewer differences in tastes, habits, opinions, and sources of income among one another than between both and the rest of the country. They think, look, and act as a class.

Although after the election of 2008 most Republican office holders argued against the Troubled Asset Relief Program, against the subsequent bailouts of the auto industry, against the several "stimulus" bills and further summary expansions of government power to benefit clients of government at the expense of ordinary citizens, the American people had every reason to believe that many Republican politicians were doing so simply by the logic of partisan opposition. After all, Republicans had been happy enough to approve of similar things under Republican administrations. Differences between Bushes, Clintons, and Obamas are of degree, not kind. Moreover, 2009-10 establishment Republicans sought only to modify the government's agenda while showing eagerness to join the Democrats in new grand schemes, if only they were allowed to. Sen. Orrin hosta continued dreaming of being Ted Kennedy, while Lindsey Graham set aside what is true or false about "global warming" for the sake of getting on the right side of history. No prominent Republican challenged the ruling class's continued claim of superior insight, nor its denigration of the American people as irritable children who must learn their place. The Republican Party did not disparage the ruling class, because most of its officials are or would like to be part of it.

Never has there been so little diversity within America's upper crust. Always, in America as elsewhere, some people have been wealthier and more powerful than others. But until our own time America's upper crust was a mixture of people who had gained prominence in a variety of ways, who drew their money and status from different sources and were not predictably of one mind on any given matter. The Boston Brahmins, the New York financiers, the land barons of California, Texas, and Florida, the industrialists of Pittsburgh, the Southern aristocracy, and the hardscrabble politicians who made it big in Chicago or Memphis had little contact with one another. Few had much contact with government, and "bureaucrat" was a dirty word for all. So was "social engineering." Nor had the schools and universities that formed yesterday's upper crust imposed a single orthodoxy about the origins of man, about American history, and about how America should be governed. All that has changed.

Today's ruling class, from Boston to San Diego, was formed by an educational system that exposed them to the same ideas and gave them remarkably uniform guidance, as well as tastes and habits. These amount to a social canon of judgments about good and evil, complete with secular sacred history, sins (against minorities and the environment), and saints. Using the right words and avoiding the wrong ones when referring to such matters -- speaking the "in" language -- serves as a badge of identity. Regardless of what business or profession they are in, their road up included government channels and government money because, as government has grown, its boundary with the rest of American life has become indistinct. Many began their careers in government and leveraged their way into the private sector. Some, e.g., Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner, never held a non-government job. Hence whether formally in government, out of it, or halfway, America's ruling class speaks the language and has the tastes, habits, and tools of bureaucrats. It rules uneasily over the majority of Americans not oriented to government.

The two classes have less in common culturally, dislike each other more, and embody ways of life more different from one another than did the 19th century's Northerners and Southerners -- nearly all of whom, as Lincoln reminded them, "prayed to the same God." By contrast, while most Americans pray to the God "who created and doth sustain us," our ruling class prays to itself as "saviors of the planet" and improvers of humanity. Our classes' clash is over "whose country" America is, over what way of life will prevail, over who is to defer to whom about what. The gravity of such divisions points us, as it did Lincoln, to Mark's Gospel: "if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand."

Codevilla had just recovered from covid. And then a drunk driver killed him.

Should we riot? I mean, "peacefully protest"?

Isn't that the thing to do now?

And... the Conservative, Inc. Grifters who have shifted their allegiance to the far left are already maligning him. Jim Swift, the Weekly Standard's CGO ( Chief Gay-Ops Officer) who attempted to get Salena Zito fired, reaches into his Bag of Slander to attack the dead before the body is cold:

Julie Kelly
@julie_kelly2

If you ever doubted Jim Swift is a miserable human being who wants you to hate him as much as he hates himself, here's proof.

Look, when Bill Clinton dies, I will have nothing even decent to say. And thus I will say nothing because I am not an animal.

Much to my chagrin, the Late Lamented BFF was right, I am a cockeyed optimist who thinks the best of people because I am stunned, each and every time that this happens, that people act so ugly about those with whom they have political disagreements.

Two thoughts, one funny and one tragic/enraging.

1) Patrice ONeal had a hilarious bit about how if he traveled anywhere dangerous he wanted to take a pretty white girl with him because then the news would report on their disappearance and care if he vanished.

2) HUNDREDS of indians from the local res have disappeared in that area over the years, and there's been zero coverage. NONE. The news did not give a single rat's rear end about them, until a cute white girl vanished.

274 Well it's interesting to see it put in black and white but so what?

We have a lot of pundits telling us where and how were at a certain point in our downward spiral from a free nation to a country of serfs and overseers but no one seems to declare what can be done to reverse the spiral.

Until lately this spiral was less obvious and most were able and willing to ignore it. Now the spiral is present in glaring color and on our TV. Not many can ignore it but then again no one knows what to do and the few ideas of old would be deadly for those who first stand up and make an effort. We saw that on Jan 6 and it's stifled a lot of the protest and national arousal we would normally experience.

"Science" has no volition. It is a process and way of thinking that makes all assertions subject to reproduction, test and falsification. "Science" can't lie. Or tell the truth. Or have an opinion. Or learn.

Scientists, however, can do all of these things. And many scientists lie because their paychecks depend on them doing so.

Is science like a doctrine where all scientists agree or isn't a long accepted notion in medicine in particular that there can be different schools of thought on who to best treat a given condition. I'm wondering, also, if a patient ever came to you for a second opinion? Why'd they bother, eh? Shouldn't they have just done what they were told originally?

Personally I believe that the actual first use of force must be done by those in authority as that would possibly spark the "we're screwed either way so let's fight" reaction. But the Powers that be have been decidely cautious about doing so although they've set up a number of instances where it could've easily occurred by accident.

I believe they will soon take that first step when peoples jobs are at stake or already lost. That means when the vaxx mandate becomes so widespread that it is unavoidable. And that means this winter.

Prepare to make some very important decisions soon.

Some actual reporter went out there and found: There were no reports of aliens/UFOs. The people missing liked to drink, and often went missing after walking home from a bender at the local bar in the winter.

Quite the mystery there isn't it?

332 Scientist is a useless word. Science is a big discipline, if it can really be said to be a single discipline at all. A scientist knows about his own specialized field of endeavor and a bit outside and that's it. And the quality varies pretty greatly from scientist to scientist. Every broad field works this way. But for whatever reason, there's always people trying to claim expertise they lack and demand deference based on their nonexistent expertise.

Yeah exactly. I mean a pediatrician is a specialist of sorts, so they're better educated -- in their area -- but not some sort of super-medic.

Its like all those global warming papers and scientist support: these guys who said "this looks good" knew almost nothing about that area of science. THey were great in molecular biology or structural engineering, but that didn't mean they understood meteorology or atmospheric dynamics.

372 Two goals remain from the top of the list for the necessary control of the people and the economy; a social system like ID and the elimination of cash.

Knowing what is in someone's account is very important to controlling it. The vaxx mandates will most likely lead to the social system used by the Chinese.

With control of your bank account and cash not allowed or being able to be used will give the social credit system it's teeth.

Will there spring up a black market in cash? Sure but overall it will take time and most people will not have access to it. More likely lots of local barter systems will arise rurally with goods and services being able to be transferred direct with people you know or know where they live. The urban setting is less conducive but will be larger and more organized.

Either way it will not deter the use of a social system to stifle debate or rebelliousness.

395 The very pronounced public opinion skew Codevilla noted in 2009, and the Tea Party revolt that actually occurred in 2010, are critical. But he, like everyone else I've ever read, always just reverts to "class" arguments, instead of pointing out that, in fact, *persistent, and prolonged*, voter action would be required to change course.

So the historic (finally, an appropriate use of the word) 2010 elections, from county to feds, needed to be repeated, since the GOP completely suppressed and negated the results, in terms of policy. Once was not enough.

In the 1990s, the historic switch from Dem to GOP control of the House actually produced some results (all later wiped away, quietly, mostly by Obama Dems, but sometimes with GOP connivance).

But the Tea Party milestone needed to be first of a series, not a one-off "revolt".

403 227 So a good friend of mine who is a Pediatric cardiologist, just posted this on social media.
"If you are not a scientist and you disagree with scientists about science, it's actually not a disagreement. You are just wrong. Science is not truth. Science is finding the truth. When science changed it's opinion, it didn't lie to you. It learned more."

If we are talking first steps it has to be remove the controlled opposition leadership. A Republican party led by Paul, Hawley, and Boebert and Hawley would likely be a lot more effective.

$50k? Yowza. Let's break that down, per Forbes.
There are 44.7 million people with student loan debt, and that debt totals $1.56 trillion. That is an average of about $35k per person. The median is quite a lot lower, at $17k.

So a $50k write-off would completely eliminate student loan debt for a significant majority of all people with student debt. In fact, only 10.9 million people have student loan debt exceeding $40k. So this write-off, if it happened, would cancel completely the student debts of at least 75% of borrowers.

Fuck him and fuck that.

But he, like everyone else I've ever read, always just reverts to "class" arguments, instead of pointing out that, in fact, *persistent, and prolonged*, voter action would be required to change course.

I think it really does have something to do with class arguments. The upper middle class Karen's are a good example of this. They think they are better and smarter than anyone else and the reason they think this is that they make--or have more--MONEY ( or at least their husband's do) than they perceive de classe Trump voters do--especially white non-college.

459 One of the reasons that Angelo Codevilla was readable is that he actually worked as a key congressional staffer to Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (who was another person who had a career before Congress) during the aftermath of the Church Committee hearings about the intel community abuse. Codevilla helped draft some of the key provisions of the FISA law that he came later to regret.

Subsequently, he became a professor of international relations at Boston University and kept his realist perspective on international and military affairs. As the country and academia went left, Codevilla kept his honor and his truthfulness and more or less became noted for bringing a historical perspective on current events such as his Country Class versus Ruling Class thesis.

While I read VDH, Codevilla had a far more varied career and more actual impact on government policy than does VDH. James Q. Wilson, also deceased, was the closest comparison to Codevilla in terms applying academic knowledge to current problems in government.

The country of the United States won't be destroyed. Only the Nation.

The country of occupied USA is necessary for the center of the rule of the AntiChrist. No other country would qualify for world domination. No, not even China as they do not have much of a military, yet. Plus their thinking is very alien to most of the rest of the world in so far as obedience and governance. China works for the most part because of it's racial homogeneity. It's much easier to feel you are part of a Nation when you and all others around you are similar in physical form, language, thought process and education (ancestral basic principles. Formal education comes after that). This also is a barrier to them ruling over the world.

The country of the USA will be the capitol of the World Government. (France will protest but what else it new) And from here will begin the overt rule over the world. The length of time of the AntiChrists rule is not to my knowledge stated. Just certain steps along the way. Some thought it would be a thousand years.

469 There are several issues with student loan debt--one is that most of the individual student loan debt (over 90 percent in 2020) is now held by the government, not private lenders. Since Obamacare passed, direct student loans come directly from the government, not from private lenders (it was part of the reconciliation bill).

Several earlier bills made it much more difficult for student loans to be discharged in bankruptcy--in part to protect the government from paying private lenders off for the guarantee against default and in part to benefit the collection agencies seeking to get commissions on debt collection.

The means used to collect defaulted debt has become extremely onerous and that particularly affects minorities and poor individuals that went to trade schools such as ITT Tech for job education. There is a moral hazard in debt just as there is in immigration amnesty, bailing out large corporations such as in 2008 and before, etc. So in my opinion, any bailing out of individuals on student loans has to be accompanied by a displacement of putting the onus of student debt on universities, colleges, etc. for putting out graduates that cannot get jobs.
