Marcia Lucas: The Disney Sequels Are Awful and Neither Kathleen Kennedy or JJ Abrams Understand Star Wars

Via Jedi Scum, from a book by a producer of Return of the Jedi and also a former president of LucasFilm:

marcialucassaysstarwarssucks.jfif

Marcia Lucas is widely credited for having saved Star Wars in the edit. George Lucas' cut was disastrous. But Marcia Lucas edited it to be faster and pacier.

That's a fun, short documentary. Watch it if you like Star Wars or movies in general. Or if you like sudden come-from-behind victory stories.

A lot of people don't know this, but in the original script and film, the Death Star was not closing in on Yavin 4 even as the x-wings were sent out to destroy it. They were just attacking it in space. There was no ticking clock. There was no imminent threat to the Rebellion.

They were just attacking the Death Star. In a leisurely way.

Marcia Lucas made up the whole Death-Star-coming-within-range ticking clock . She was able to change the way the ending worked with just a couple of added lines of dialogue and a quickly-put-together graphic of the Death Star coming into range of the planet.

And she thinks the Kathleen Kennedy films are awful.

As HeelvsBabyface points out, this must mean she is a sexist and racist and almost certainly a member of the Alt-Right. She is White Supremacist Adjacent.

Meanwhile, Shang-Chi costar Simu Liu (reviewers say that he shares top billing with two women) is in trouble for "resurfaced" comments, attributed to him, about pedophilia.

The right is angry with him for offering sympathy and understanding to pedophiles, and the left is angry with him for saying that being a pedophile is like being gay.

In the WorldNews subreddit Liu would respond to a BBC article shared in the subreddit with a user submitted headline that reads, "Germany encourages pedophiles to sign up for confidential treatment, even if they have abused a child, and doctors are hailing it as a success."

Liu submitted a lengthy response stating, "I recently did a show in which I played a pedophile, and did a significant amount of research (clinical studies mind you, not the 'method' stuff) on the disorder and how it’s perceived in the media. In the end the role completely changed the way I look at pedophilia and has made me much more sympathetic to anyone who is born with those urges."

He then noted, "From a biological standpoint it's no different than being gay -- a small mutation in the genome that defines our sexual preferences. Depending on what area of the world you were born and what time, it also may have been a perfectly acceptable thing to act on those urges."

"Now, we all know that taking advantage of minors is wrong. Disgusting and vile, even. But with the exception of Germany we are going about it completely COMPLETELY the wrong way. It's like we having learned anything by studying homosexuality -- we're talking about exploring the same "cures" to pedophilia as we were about homosexuality 20 years ago, a la conversion therapy and whatnot," Liu wrote.

This is a Disney star.

But at least they got rid of that "abhorrent" Gina Carano, huh?

20 When you find pedophiles to be sympathetic, but despise anyone who would vote Republican.

It's one short step from treating with zero repercussions to greasing the wheels to make pedophilia acceptable.

Remember, this was the issue they used to break the Catholic Church. Any religious organization has to immediately report to the authorities any abuse, but not if they're getting treated, I guess.

22 And there was absolutely a reason to kill off Han Solo and the others.

In business, if you want to sell your premium product, you have two choices:
1. Make the premium product much better than the standard product
2. Make the standard product way worse so that the premium product looks better

Door #2 is what companies that take their customers for granted choose. And that is analogous to what Disney did with the original characters. The had two choices to kick off the new trilogy and next chapter in the story universe: make the new characters at least as compelling, interesting, meaningful and complete as the old characters, or get rid of the old characters as soon as the new characters are introduced and get the torch passed to them. Disney picked door #2, too, and I suspect that it is because they *couldn't* pick door #1. They don't have the talent, creativity, vision or independence to get there. It doesn't fit their model. So off with their heads.

Yes, she was very responsible for making it a fun, useful, tight, and well crafted little story from Lucas' disaster. Left to his own devices, you get the prequels. Take him out entirely and you get the sequels.

JJ Abrams should not be allowed to direct anything but FX and maybe second unit. He's no good at a full production, and every single thing he's put out proves it. It looks amazing but ends up making no sense and leaving you flat.

My sexuality is immutable, except when it's fluid. Oh and young kids who self-identify as transgender will more often than not self-identify as cis-gender in a few years unless some activists get their hooks in.

BUT DON'T YOU DARE TELL ME I'M NOT EXACTLY WHAT I SAY I AM AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT.

52 The guy isn't even right about genes causing homosexuality. They haven't been able to find anything like that. So they fell back on epigenetics or gene expression during development --- which is basically just handwaving and saying "well it must be something beyond a person's control or socialization."

But it's looking more and more like socialization plays a much bigger role and Gen Z is the generation which proves it since 18% of them identify as LGBTQ vs about 2% from my generation. If you look at what kids are exposed to these days being gay is considered a superpower. I expect the next generation of X-men to have one named Cocksuckerine.

The expanded universe had some interesting stories and characters. Rebuild the world (Republic in decay, rogue planet-states everywhere, etc., whatever) and introduce new characters. Those new characters study their history and learn about the fall of the Republic, the ascendance of the Empire, the fall of the Empire and the ascendance of the New Republic that is now on its knees.

There was a ton they could have done. They picked the "kill it all off to make our idiot characters and story look good" path.

You know, I was thinking about something yesterday: how many directors actually do Frank Capra moments?

I am talking about those sequences in a movie which rouse the passion/nostalgia/love/manliness in a positive way in the audience. The sequence where Mr Smith is touring Washington DC in Mr Smith goes to Washington is my example.

I only can come up with Michael Bay: Launch sequence in Armageddon and the scene at the beginning with Hummel where they set up his motivation in the Rock.

He seems to be saying that pedophilia, like homosexuality, is genetic and, therefore, you cannot control having those desires. He doesn't state that acting on them is okay although he does state, correctly, that if you'd been born in a different place/time, it would have been.

I don't see the comments are particularly sympathetic to pedophilia unless he's correct that it's genetic. I can see why the gays would be upset though. Suggesting that homosexuality arises from a genetic mutation could lead to a search for the specific mutation and a greater acceptance of abortion.

I figure he is the stand in for the squares, shocked by the very existence of gays. In the 80s, it was still pretty outre. I mean, it was a HUGE deal for Tom Hanks to play a gay AIDS victim. It was RARE for a film or TV show to have someone gay in it - and if they were, it was often for comic relief I am looking at you Revenge of the Nerds.

At any rate, in the 80s, a Disney character would not - repeat NOT - come out as gay. Not in the film itself, not in interviews after, not in accidental revelations in the National Enquirer.

And here we are today.

"Gay as a genetic mutation" is actually the prevailing (non-scientifically proven) belief. "I was born that way", etc... You can't force a gay man to become straight because it's part of his DNA, is the claim.

Of course, advocates then start bragging about how they can make your kids gay in fifteen minutes or less, which would mean that it isn't in the DNA. But that's not the socially acceptable view.

Liu strikes me as someone who thinks he's smarter than he actually is. But the only thing I get out of his comment is that his screen role in which he played a pedophile caused him to come to the conclusion that they way pedophilia is being treated doesn't work.

One of the early fights between Christians and pagans when the former spread through the Roman empire was the tradition of killing "imperfect" children common in much of the empire.

We are regressing. And at a speed no one could have expected.

151 Its nice having someone with credibility attack Star Wars and Disney, almost anyone still working in the business doesn't dare do it because it would be a career ender.

Something like 3 out of 5 "big budget" movies are from a Disney studio, who's brave enough shut themselves out of that, unless they are already retired and don't care.

155 It could be that the members of the ruling class tho they may not gather for the purposes of organization do have a sort of guide to set their path on the things they do.

One thing in the guide is to destroy any and all stories or examples of morals, fighting tyranny, believing in a God and having faith that are cherished by the middle and lower classes.

You'll notice that in the last 40 years or so Hollywood (the prime center of propaganda creation and production starting in WWII) has taken and produced many many stories that knock all of those stories out by refutation or outright twisting of their meaning. This is not to effect those that hold those principles but to effect the young of those people growing up. And we see the result.

I'd like to say that GL is a pretty good writer overall, but it's been too long since I saw American Graffiti. Empire wasn't really Lucas, that was long-time SF and crime writer Leigh Brackett, with a polish by Lawrence Kasdan. It was the one of the original 3 that sang like a good SF novel.

173 Unless you can consistently argue that sex and sexuality are entirely distinct and that the variables behave independently - and you can't do so, social constructionism notwithstanding, and still maintain "born this way" - then the transexual phenomenon puts paid to the entire "born this way" thesis.

We can easily track transexual identification growing in popularity. It is a fad, and it tracks like a fad (though it is a particularly dangerous one). This development of rising popularity in gender identity logically contradicts the homosexual "born this way" thesis because the two cannot be reconciled. If transexualism is accepted and protected, then a lot of the law around homosexuality is invalid. It is a choice, and it is subject to cure or suppression. If it isn't, and if "born this way" is true, then the law around transexualism is invalid because it is a choice and subject to cure or suppression.

The two cannot be reconciled, and one threatens the other.

I know it's "just me" but I saw that as a philosophical theme in Mimsy were the Borogoves. Then the toys separated the kids from the family, but only when the kids were young enough not to have another value system firmly in place. People do not establish value systems the way they used to.

299 I always liked Han and Luke. They both had appealing characteristics and arcs that people could follow. Both had flaws and grow.

I saw a decent character study on Luke a while back. How even he sees himself as the hero. And part of his journey is that he needs to give up that goal to be the hero if he wants to become a Jedi. And how he isn't even a traditional hero because in each movie he needs to be saved by someone else. How in Return of the Jedi it is a journey for him to be acknowledged as a Jedi like his father.

306 I wonder if Mark Hamil had a drug or alcohol problem because he sure did age roughly.

He had his face reconstructed after his corvette wreck, its why he looks so different between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. I'm pretty sure they added the "Luke gets captured by the Wampa" scene to explain why his face is so messed up.

That didn't get better with age.

307 No, I think that's wrong. The suits made them to make money. The people making them (Kennedy, Johnson, et al) did it to make themselves feel good and to hell with if it made money.
Posted by: Aetius451AD at September 21, 2021 12:57 PM (csEWM)

Quite right, of course. The two things can both be true, however.
Disney doesn't care if original fans like the new movies, only that they make money. As long as corporation can still make a buck off of Leia's bikini, or Skywalker or Solo imagery, as long as people plop down filthy lucre, they don't actually give a shit about anything except making money.

The directors and producers as always in Hollywood, are nuts and sometimes they're genius nuts and sometimes not.
Disney won't let them lose money for their own egos forever.
It's all about the Benji's.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, finding religion in the USSR with Andrei at September 21, 2021 01:04 PM (LvTSG)

My critique stands...Kubrick was dying when production of A.I started...the first 40 minutes or so had a lot of Kubrick's direction touches, it was understated, interesting and played out without trying to play into sloppy emotions...the rest of the film, not so much. I don't think Kubrick directed anything past the first 40 minutes, he might have helped collaborate on the last third, but it bears none of his hallmark restraint and direction style.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 21, 2021 01:10 PM (KZzsI)

He was not supposed to be a hologram. They decided to fit Jabba into the space that the original stand in actor was for him and Han walked around him. So they chose to make him smaller with the idea that from Star Wars to RoTJ his size increased massively. And they had Han step on his tail so they could still include the walk around.

Kubrick didn't direct any of it. He was dead before the completion of post on Eyes Wide Shut, and Spielberg, a friend of Kubrick, decided to make his next project AI in honor of his friend.

There was a mountain of material, including the work of at least five authors Kubrick had hired to help him figure out the story, but he was always stuck on the idea of whether David's love was real or not. He never cracked it to his own satisfaction, so he never developed a completed screenplay.

Spielberg answered the central question quickly (yes, the love is real), and wrote the final draft himself. He directed the whole thing, but the greatest influences on the story from Kubrick are the first and final thirds.

You also see this with people finding someone who will be rotten towards them because one or both parents were. That's their comfort zone and they feel distrusting of people who think well of them or who are loving and generous. Nurture, not nature

They could certainly do articles or stories, but the problem is, it points out the very thing they've been covering up and they know it. If a black girl goes missing, they simply cannot express outrage or anything until the perp has been caught, and either confesses or the trial concludes. And said perp absolutely positively needs to be white.

But everybody knows the chances are 99.997% that it's a black guy that did it. That's why they can't report on any black murders or disappearances, because they know who the perp is, and can't draw attention to the problem. This one is obvious, they know the BF is the guy. If she had been by herself, chances are they'd be mum until the perp was caught.

462 Both genders are guilty of using physical appearance as a guide to who to get closer to or allow to get closer in a relationship.

That and the covert rules of approaching a female by a male esp. these days, approaching a female for anything regarding sex is overwhelming. Not like it wasn't always but now the rules are made up by the female individually and without a guide to what is normal and allowable behavior and speech.

How the human race has proliferated is always amazing to me. Altho actually it hasn't done so well since the rules got so arcane, complicated and covert in the last, oh, 100 years. Esp. after WWII.

And neither gender has gained any points on worthiness except in the hinterlands where there is a smaller group to interact with likely the similar background, outlook and occupation.

Fun bit of info: those with the condition of aphantasia are extremely common among a few specific jobs... social media engineering is one, and another is: scriptwriting.
This puzzled a lot of people for years, but it's not that they're well suited to the jobs - it's that people like that are much more likely to be a certain sort of moonbat, who in turn dominate those industries. And as a side effect the writing suffers quite a bit.

Absolutely. But there's that whole "it was that way when I was a kid, so it's that way now" thing going on. Like everything is static, forever. So the just know they can hand their little kid a tablet and let him watch Disney +, or Nickelodeon and it's all exactly the way it was. Then they're shocked when they find out Blue's Clues has been grooming kids with LGBTQ2+ messaging, Big Bird has a new transsexual friend, Rug Rats have a diaper fetish and the sister is teaching them how to use vibrators and Netflix has a cartoon that teaches kids anal kink...

People really are not paying a bit of attention. Parents glance over, see bright, colorful characters, puppies, butterflies and flowers, cheerful music and think it's all good.

Not exactly, but it reminded me of the kind of low key road movies which came out in the early 60s.

Mostly family friendly. On HBOMax.

Also, saw a great, fun movie along the lines of "Zombieland" and "Warm Bodies" but with giant mutated insects, titled -

"Love and Monsters" on HULU.

Family friendly. Comedy with lots of laughs and a romantic heart.

Liked it so much that I hope they make an equally goode sequel.

Is that the line now? If you have the sadz about Gabby, you may be a racist?
Just like the media, huh? They MAKE you care about something with carpet bomb coverage, then BLAME you for watching.

539 All the films that touch the main characters from the Original Star Wars have been trash. The writers showed massive disdain for the heroes and the relationships forged and threw them onto a funeral pyre and celebrated it as some modern Sati.
Only Rogue One has any value to it even with the Grrrl Pwr crap it was decent story. Disney just doesn't have any respect for the fans or the material. They're treating it as if the lore can be anything and nothing at the same time. They have the ability to tell a singular story but lack the ability to tell a saga made up of many stories.

Gary (of Nerdrotic) was saying that streaming was a god send (at least in theory) for film companies because it removes instability from the equation via subscription based models.

I disagree. If you make offensively bad shit, then people will eventually cancel your ass, and they will not come back as when you just had a Freddy Got Fingered or whatever.

542 Disney WAS great, once upon a time. Does anyone remember the mid-90's 2-season series "Gargoyles"? (there was no third season, just as there are no Star Wars sequel trilogies).

Star Trek voice actors galore, one hell of a backstory, and a lot of really interesting characters. I LOVED that show

544 (No, I'm not saying the world was perfect, or the Soviets were good, or the people inside the Soviet Union were happy.)

The nominal "good life" the Soviets wanted was something I could agree with at least in parts. It just wasn't going to ever happen, even if that was really their goal, and more importantly that wasn't their goal.

The "good life" the modern left wants is flat out evil. No part of it is good or something a good person could agree with.

Loved that movie! Had a sensibility of another era - no overt snark/cruelty, no veiled political jabs, no social agenda boxes blatantly checked (e.g., the black character makes a point to mention his/her race, or gay couple deep kiss), just a good old fashioned hero's journey.

Dipshits. If Roe V. Wade and all the other SCOTUS BS goes away, abortion will not go away. It will be regulated by the states. Just like in the early pre-ROE 1970's, you send Muffy off to New York City for a week of Broadway, Shopping, and a D&C. Or Juanita visits the "relatives" in California for a week and comes back to a new used car. Rich People have always been able to avoid their responsibilities by Money Whipping them.

555 Compare his understated performance in Chinatown with anything he did beginning around 1980

Same with Al Pacino after The Godfather Part 2

Posted by: JoeF. at September 21, 2021 01:38 PM (mR6Gs)

i think he is pretty good, same with Pacino. That there are two distinct variations of Pacino the actor, not even including the roles, is a very unusual and distinctive thing. i think he is way better than Deniro, and my guess he is better as a person. At least he doesn't shoot his mouth off as often.

That was popular among the libertarian strain of the right as well. Usually took the form of Roe v Wade caused crime to fall. Don't hear it quite as often now that policing has relaxed and crime rates are shooting back up.

Perkins Coie already knows that NOTHING is ever going to happen to them, why would they worry about immunity, they're Democrats, they have total immunity just by existing.

566 Two things I learned about editing back in film school:

1. "We'll fix it in post" (i.e., we can save it in the editing room) is a terrible, terrible strategy.

2. That said, it really is amazing what a skilled editor can do. I've personally watched editors perform miracles with terrible material, and the movie business is filled with stories of films that were heroically rescued from disaster by clever editing. The problem is that many lazy filmmakers come to RELY on this magic. As in many other areas of life, extraordinary heroism and miracles are not a viable strategy.

568 After you've drooled all over somebody, there's little point in tepid criticism. Star Wars was a broken property BEFORE Disney took over and shat all over it. Lucas had already turned it into a farce more than a decade prior. Regardless, Kennedy is a destroyer of culture. She is an instigating, acid progressive. To wit, she is a horrible human being. So who gives a shit if Marcia Lucas thinks she's "a whip smart firecracker" or whatever other dumb frigging thing she can come up with.

569 My comment keeps being called spam by the site. So I'll try again.

Star Wars being save in the edit has been debunked.
