Some years back an engineering class from the U of Nebraska did a survey project of Kansas.

Best practical joke? Not sure...There was a student in college who used to sit at our table. Nice guy. Fairly religious, so he'd bow his head and pray before he ate dinner. He usually had an apple with his meal. One night when he was praying, we swapped out his apple for an orange. When he raised his head, his eyes nearly popped out. He thought a miracle had happened when his apple mysteriously transformed into an orange. Naturally, we repeated this prank a few times (he was pretty naive, but good natured).

April Fools Day, 1985: I sent a co-worker in the Fed Civil Service a fake Personnel Action Notice through the office mail, that reduced his GS Grade from 13 to 11. Big pay cut. Everyone in our work section was aware of what I planned. He believed it. He looked so devastated that after a few minutes the guy at the next desk had to tell him it was fake. I am no longer an American. I signed away my HIPAA rights to day while being berated by my boss for making a mountain out of a molehill over having to be tested at my own cost or lose my job. Actually, it was my boss's boss's boss, and he seems to think that unless I follow every whim and dictate of the Asshole Commander in Thief, I should quit my job so I am not under so much self-induced stress. I asked him if this is what constitutes special accommodated under a Title VII Section 12 Religious Exemption, since Biden has said out loud that I am the problem. I'm assuming that was his point.
At any rate, I took the damned test, signed the waiver that says they can send my personal information and test results to the State and Municipality, and it took nearly 2 hours in line to do so, only one hour of which I was paid for, plus mileage I will never recoup, all so I don't get fired by people who could not give one tinker's dam about me or my situation. I'm drinking, heavily. With my luck, the test won't get back in time for Monday and I will be canned anyway for being in breach of the rules. Never verified it myself, but the best practical joke I heard of was of a guy at a train station on the British coast who had a sack full of bread crumbs and was tossing handfuls out to the seagulls. More and more of them started clustering around him to get the crumbs; then, as the next train pulled up to the platform, he stopped tossing any out. Gulls drew in closer and got agitated, trying to get the bag. Guy didn't get on the train, waited until everyone else had gotten off or on; then, just as the doors were starting to close, he took the bag and chucked it into one of the cars. Gulls flew in after it, door closed behind them, and the train took off.

The mortar section in my company got a new private in. We were going to do an operation (in training) where instead of jumping, we were going to land a C-130 in the middle of a dirt strip and run out the back to hit our objective. They convinced him that we were all going to be hooked up together in a chain and that the airplane was going to land, drop the ramp, taxi, and the soldier closest to the ramp was going to deploy a reserve parachute and be pulled out of the back of the airplane, pulling all the rest of us with him as we ran like hell toward the back of the airplane, then the plan would take off again. So they sent him to the supply room to get a harness for the mortar for an airlanding operation. Of course, the supply sergeant figured out what was going on, and sent him somewhere else, and so on, and so on. Welcome to the company.

This is somebody else's practical joke story.
A guy I knew pranked a friend and coworker that had just bought an economy car. This was before the age of hybrids and teslas, in the mid 90s. So the guy, we'll call him Al, started siphoning fuel INTO this guy's new economy car. Al knew where the new car guy lived and where he parked the car. He did this for weeks. The new car guy started bragging at work about how he got one of those super-efficient cars with a new kind of engine. All kept it up for two months. The new car guy had started talking about conspiracies from big oil and how when the news of these new engines like his comes out there'll be wars. He probably only filled up once during that time. So after that two-month span Al stopped adding fuel. And then started siphoning fuel out. The new car guy took his car into the shop and they said nothing was wrong. The new car guy then told everyone he had to keep quiet about everything because big oil had found out and his life could be in danger. Not really a practical joke, but I once worked at a college. We opened a new school store, and I ended up being responsible for setting up the screens for the new POS system. The store manager and I were both big Simpsons fans, and I had a bit of space left on the screen. So I added an "ANY" key. When she pressed it, a Simpsons quote would pop up. I mentioned a few months ago that I thought I ought to consider giving up my driver's license because I no longer thought myself safe to drive.
Well, it's come to that. My peripheral vision to the left has been poor to non-existent after a stroke several years ago, and I recently realized that my depth perception has (excuse me) totally sunken. I will keep my license for purposes of identification, but I'll be giving my car to my middle sister, who needs one. Fortunately these days, almost everything is available on-line, even if one must resort to Amazon (yeah, I know, but ...). ZOD, I humbly submit an answer...
Fastest and also cheapest remedy is to take the gun to a gunsmith and ask if he can chase the mag tube threads using a die. Then buy a new end cap and try it. If the threads cannot be 'repaired' ask the gunsmith to cut-off the tube end just enough to get back to one or two good threads, or to plain tube, then cut new threads. What is the best practical joke you've ever played on someone?
I'm not sure it's the best one, but it's the one that came to mind. Back when I cooked in a small bar and grille, there was a waitress that used to take a fry off of people's plates in the kitchen to munch on or a tortilla off of a plate of nachos. We call it 'grazing' in the restaurant business. In any event, generally I tell people they have arrived as a professional server when they can finish chewing before they arrive at the table. And walking through the dining room chewing, while not appearing to be chewing, is a definite skill. So one night, I placed a nacho chip strategically in the pile on the plate, knowing it would be the one she pulled out of the pile, and placed a drop of a super hot habanero extract we had called 'Da Bomb' on that chip. Sure enough, she snatched it, popped it in her mouth and proceeded out of the kitchen with the order in hand. She arrived back in the kitchen 90 seconds later cursing and grabbing a glass of water with tears coming down her cheeks. So I had to take my Dad to the ER last night. He's elderly and has stomach issues caused by some of his meds, and he was in severe, barely-able-to-stay-upright-in-the-chair pain. I'd tell the whole story, but I run out of characters when trying to type it. Here's the abbreviated version:
Rural ER, not crowded at all, no ambulances or helicopters arrived during the entire TEN HOURS we were there, they made him sit there in a waiting room wearing a mask and hold a cup of his own piss for over an hour, and then his "treatment" lasted about five minutes, during which they gave him some Ibuprofen and sent him home. Lots of staff, none of them busy. Apparently, many important TikTok videos had to made. Worst part of story and main reason I'm angry: there's a security guard in the waiting room, on a raised dais. He's a shit-tub whose Mom apparently got him everything he wanted from 5.11 for Christmas. He sat there like a warden, staring at people. I got up to go pee. I'm not intimidating, just an average middle-aged guy. He looked at me, and put his hand on his gun. He put. His hand. On. His. Gun. I was unarmed per hospital policy. I have been learning a lot about my neighbors lately. Mynext-doors are pretty white trash. Nice people (at leaat the gparents), but a combo of bad choices, unlucky health issues, bad financial situation...the grandma used to try and be a "cool mom" and her sons are f&&ked up. Overall I've had okay experiences in the ER. The worst thing that happened one time is when all of us in a packed waiting room heard a bloodcurdling scream coming from the back, then sob-screaming. Everybody froze. Turns out a mother had just been told her 24-year-old daughter died.
A little later I was being walked to a room in the back, passing the room the mom was in. We met each other's eyes for a second as I walked by. I've never seen a look like that on anyone's face, ever. They must have given her a sedative, she was quiet, two people sitting right up against her holding her hands. As for doctors, I already had fairly low confidence in doctors in general (too much time arguing with assorted doctors about my own or my kids' symptoms only to have it turn out that I was right and they were wrong. No acknowledgement or apology, of course) prior to 2020. My confidence in them is now basically zero. I'll see a doctor only if I need a prescription.

With all this gamma-ray and cobalt talk, I was reading up its history.
Cobalt60 contamination of steel is common if the scrap used for feedstock in steel plants isn't monitored correctly. There was a large group of apartments in Taiwan that used cobalt60 contaminated steel. 10,000 people lived in these buildings over 9-20 year periods. They all received a large incremental radiation dose as a result. And there was a noticeable difference in cancer deaths among the population in comparison to Taiwan as a whole. That difference being they had lower cancer mortality rates. There's a hypothesis "radiation hormesis" that states that while larger radiation dosage increments above background are known to have detrimental effects in humans, with increased cancer deaths being a result there are some low-level increments that are believed to cause just enough small degradation that it stimulates higher cellular repair activity thus guarding against and some cancers and repairing oxidative stress. My dad had a couple of heart surgeries here and there. Valve repair, AV node shenanigans. Every time, he's gotten a real nerd of a surgeon, so after the doctor does a kick-ass job with the surgery, he's back a week later in their office geeking out over scans and video and data from the procedure.... my dad is curious, and the surgeons want to gloat over what a great job they did, and so.... yeah.

Interesting, Braenyard. The Senkaku Islands are off the Ryuku (Okinawa) Island chain, and like them, haven't always been Japanese. The Senkakus are pretty much uninhabited, so the Japanese wouldn't have to deal with local resentment of the JSDF/US Military or the constant anti-helicopter protests.

My ENT (who did my CI surgeries) is a freaking genius. At ENT stuff, anyway. He's about the only doctor I can think of that I trust at the moment. But only for ENT stuff. (Our GP is retiring. She was going to continue to work part time, but she's being driven out by the company that bought her practice because she won't get the shot, having already had and recovered from Kung Pao Sicken. And our kids' pediatrician recommended the shot after both kids got and recovered from it, so we're done with him.)

Personally, I'm actually okay with the corpo takeover but only if they adopt the McDonalds sales model. Go into the office and above the receptionist there's a big menu of services offered, and you order what you want. No haggling, no bullshit, none of that "it's this price if you're insured and this other price if you're not" nonsense, just all very clearly spelled out right there.
Maybe upscale places like hospitals have the equivalent of a waiter who comes to your seat in the lobby and provides recommendations as you peruse the menu. @Cppthis, I know a couple of docs who have sold their practices. It's the requirement to keep medical records online. Economies of scale -- a small practice has a really hard time being an IT business. I imagine there are SAAS or other providers who can do it for them, but these guys just said screw it, I can't do it.

Had a varied day today. Fired up the high-wheeler walk-behind mower and mowed the leave strip I left at the edge of the road when I mowed the south ditch with the riding mower. May be the last mow of the season, maybe not.
Drove up to the shop door with the trailer with my buddy's car on it, and welded up a rust hole in the "A" pillar, that was revealed when he took the front clip off it. That turned out pretty nice. Drove to the next town, and returned some incorrect parts to the NAPA store. And came back home, and chipped the last of the tar undercoating off the dune buggy floor pan. Well, when I worked as a welder, the bus that powered the welders had an on/off switch that was out of sight of the welder. The guy struck an arc, then, when he stopped, I turned off the main to his mig welder. I could hear the guy banging on his mig welder, etc., so, I turned the welder back on. This went on for a minute or two before I stopped or, he figured out something was going on. Don't remember which. A lot of these kids were never exposed to a lot of music we grew up with. And in the case of a lot of millennials and zoomies, anything besides rap/hip-hop would be novel to them. Top 40 now is a whole nother animal than what Top 40 was back in the 70s and 80s. And as far as kids from other countries, kinda a no-brainer that in some previously restrictive countries, that kids are being exposed to music and movies that are new to them.
