Saw an article several years back that compared incomes in the 50 states versus those in various countries in Europe. In all but a couple of cases, people in the individual American states were making more money than even in the most well-to-do European countries.
And when you factored in cost of living adjustments, you were still doing better in the last couple of US states than you were in Europe.

You'll notice that when you compare American and Euro peers the later have smaller dwellings and often flats instead of houses, mopeds instead of cars, and on and on.

Not when you hear the way most people in this area (Central MD) pronounce it. The Baltimore accent adds a pronounced "long A" sound to words that have a "long O" sound in them. Hard to recreate phonetically.
Try saying "tuh-MAYO-nee-um" out loud. That'll get you close

I don't know if PI has mutated over the years but I have noticed the blisters and sores have changed a bit as I've gotten older. It takes much longer to completely heal now. Even if I'm doing the blister packs of Prednisone.

Yup. I grew up watching Jack Krugman on Quincy. It all seemed pretty clean, solving crimes in the lab, etc. But the reality, pretty gruesome, not sure I want to sit around with beers and brats discussing the latest cases.

And yes I do know the country has gotten fatter. My work is fairly lean, and my distance riding hobby I see mostly people that are somewhat fit out on the trails, hikers, bikers and riders like myself. I was struck how large people are when I flew a few years ago. These were not people of Walmart, but business and suburban rich enough to vacation class people.

As for the 2020 election - Correia was an accountant before he started making lots of money as an author (and he is making lots of money as an author). He stated pretty much from the start that the election stank. He also made a post on his blog in which he invited other accountants to state whether they had ever seen anything as fishy as the election in which there hadn't been fraud involved. IIRC, out of the dozens of individuals who responded, exactly one claimed that he had, and that company's records were an absolute disaster.

But they are designing a new downlink set that will be able to be built at "multiples" of that, and will be cheaper.

My other option is DSL. StarLink is faster, fewer service interruptions and for me it is cheaper.
Weather doesn't knock it out like it can with satellite television. Most service interruptions last no more than 2 minutes.
Set up takes 5 minutes, unless you are running it through walls, roof mounting etc. I just had it on the deck for a few months at ground level before putting on the roof and it worked just fine. No checking the azimuth or any of that bullshit. Just plug it in and download an app.

We have a bunch of paper road maps, states and cities, from Mr. Bassman's band traveling days that occurred before the advent of smart phones. We are packing for our move and getting rid of stuff.
Should we donate the maps or throw them away? It seems a shame to discard them, but I don't know if anyone collects things like old-ish maps. I guess I've seen them used as wall decor.

Tuesday. I used a used-up candle-jar that I normally would throw out but kept because it had a fall scene on it. When the electricity went out, it was really handy for the little tea candle, which is in a flimsy metal holder that heats up before the candle is out.
I have THE most useless maps btw. Two nautical maps from the Port Huron-to-Mackinaw Island race in the '70s, pre-GPS. Marked lines and notations - taffrail log? I don't own a boat, let alone sail, but I like unfolding them to look at them, from time to time.

And the Os actually won in the 10th. First guy up dropped a beautiful bunt to move the "free runner" (new rule for extra innings) from 2nd to 3rd. Bunt was good enough that there was no throw. Intentional walk loaded the bases. Bloop single to win.

You can buy an RV specific Garmin, key-in the dimensions of your rig, and it'll keep you from undertall overpasses and width-deprived roads, so as you don't go all P-38 on your RV's roof or sides. You can also get trucker/CDL specific units, with all the truck stops and diesel repair shops. Hazmat routes, too. Good place to hunt for certain desirable cargos, IYKWIM.

My daughter got some day old chicks on Tuesday. So we have 4 chicks in a bin in the guest bathroom shower stall. I selected the green/blue egg layer selection. They sent 4 different chicks and I have no idea what they are except one is a bantam since it's much smaller. It's her SAE project for her Ag class.

Okay. One amusing post-mortem anecdote. First week of med school we were introduced to the cadaver we would spend the next whole semester of Gross Anaatomy with. Being a bit of a rube, I was dressed as well as I could afford, wearing a new pair of suede shoes. When we went to reposition the dissection table, the brim full bucket of embalming fluid under the table sloshed the vile stuff all over my new shoes. It was nasty.
But, on the plus side, those shoes lasted forever!! Every time I wore them someone would remark, "Don't they just look like themselves? So peaceful!"

Rookies! Before I sold my grandparents farm I had to clean it out. One outbuilding was full of things like old brooms that had the straws worn down to about 2 inches. Dozens of them. Old plastic hanging plant baskets - hundreds of them. Draft horse collars so old they disintegrated upon a touch. During the Depression, Grampa was office manager (and only full time employee) of the local electrical utility's office in town. He had saved all the envelopes that folks mailed their bill payments in. Thousands of them with cancelled 3 cent stamps. And on and on.
I filled two 40 cu yd roll off dumpsters with stuff like that.

I subscribe to two (2) GPS map services, and they both have a system to report map inaccuracies... I've reported several errors in my AO over the past few years and they get fixed at the next update!

A long time ago I worked in my one and only retail job, at Radio Shack. The manager had a freebie box for employees of things he couldn’t sell. One, which I took and had for years, was a transformer-like toy. It transformed between a laser gun and a robot. Pulling the trigger on the gun caused it to whoop and flash lights.
The trigger on the gun was curved and right about in the center. It remained in the center, front, when in robot shape.
In robot shape, you pulled its giant erect penis to make it whoop and flash.
Someone must have seen it during design and production. But no one said anything. (Search “Galactic Man” to see it.)

Mammaw was bad about always having several tubs of various fats. Bacon grease. Sausage grease, etc. She was a fantastic cook and used them in everything so no one thought it odd.
I think her fried sweet corn recipe (lost) used bacon grease for the frying, butter, sugar, salt and some sort of magic because I have never been able to recreate it. That stuff was like crack.

I've also noticed that newer vehicles equipped with that stuff do not have a prominent compass.
It' like what they are doing to society - no peripheral vision. A paper map is 360 degrees that other is straight down the cattle chute.

My dad died 30 yrs ago, my brother and I just left most of the good stuff (4 generations worth) in mom's house at the time.
Fast forward to 8 yrs ago, mom moves to a condo. Brother and I spent weeks agonizing over splitting tons of tools, implements, nuts and bolts, mechanical trivia, old radios, you get the idea.
Two years ago my brother dies in a freak accident at 63 and his widow tells me, "bring a u-haul".
Now I have it all back in one place, and need to implement the Dewey decimal system to find a 1/4 inch socket in that shop.
Again, god laughs.

Rookies! Before I sold my grandparents farm I had to clean it out. One outbuilding was full of things like old brooms that had the straws worn down to about 2 inches. Dozens of them. He had saved all the envelopes that folks mailed their bill payments in. Thousands of them with cancelled 3 cent stamps. And on and on.
My grandfather ran a second hand store in Amarillo. Big old warehouse building stuffed full of stuff. He didn't even know everything he had. My favorite place in the world as a kid. He sold it a few years before he died. That was great, because we didn't have to go through it, but is sucked because we didn't get to go through it!

But it might be a waste. A lot of reviews I read often break down the shortcomings (although truckers whine and exaggerate a lot) and I start second guessing. Company has a GPS with Rand McNally installed. Google Maps has lots of uses and is very detailed (even if I can't rely on it as a truckers GPS). And, of course, the Rand McNally Motor Carrier's Road Atlas.

In my travel experience, it's rare for new roads to be of much significance for me, unless they completely replace old and familiar routes. Used to take Hwy. 93 through Boulder, NV, to get from Vegas to Kingman. Then, suddenly, Interstate 11 appeared, making a big loop south to bypass Boulder. But the transition was seamless, and no hassle at all for me.
And my GPS still shows me driving across trackless desert.

My car has a “zone variation” setting, which I’ve never dealt with.
I did get freaked out once driving from Dallas to San Diego, looked up after about an hour driving and saw I was heading East. Not being familiar with the area, that was possible. Fortunately the highway signs confirmed I was going west. The reading flipped back to the correct direction after Yuma, as I recall. I’ve never had that happen since.
Weirdly, it continued to correctly handle north and south.

My Dad and his older sister don't talk to each other over what happened with their parents (there in the mid to late 90's so that sucks, but I still talk to both). My family (parents, siblings) was torn apart by lies and litigation, and finally divorce of my parents after over 50 years of marriage. Mother and brother split off, the rest of us stay in touch. Worried about my little family, given I'm having so may problems with my kids. I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Yeah, I had to look up Courgette. I happen to like all three of those. Eggplant doesn't have much flavor, but does absorb the flavor of the sauces used in its dishes. I do like zuchinni steamed with butter, salt and pepper. Okra I love deep fried!

Narcissistic personality disorder. But we sort of came to terms. Now I think she doesn't even remember me. Half the time I forget about her, too.
My mother just thought I was stupid and told people that, I was the dumb one in the family. When I asked for $200 to tide me over in college, she said she wouldn't send it because she didn't think I was smart enough to finish college and it would be waste of money. So I got a job so I could eat. And still got my Masters degree.
I was also not a boy, and for that reason I was a waste of resources. When I was young, I wandered off from a campsite with some family friends, and when the folks were packing up to leave, the couldn't find me. I came back a bit later, and mom held me down while dad beat me bruised and bloody because I had inconvenienced them.
Some parents really should never have had kids. I guess I'm glad they did, but it would have been nice if they had given me up to a family that gave a damn.

Cellular ISPs switch IPs a lot, and some (and other ISPs) use a type of NAT (carrier-grade NAT) it's called.
IPv6 with a 128-bit address (split up in two halves) eliminates all these scare address problems. The way it's done now, with IPv6, NAT is not needed. The high 64-bits are a public prefix, and the low order bits belong to each local network. You've got 64 bits for all your stuff, and 64-bits for the public part.

The first specification for how systems should generate that lower order 64 bit IPv6 suffix was based on the MAC address of the Ethernet adapters. This meant that the lower 64-bits would be a unique identifier for every piece of hardware showing up the public IPv6 address space.
You can be sure Bob@NSA had nothing to do with that specification. At any rate, once that became known, they came up with "temporary IPv6" addresses, which are to be preferred for public use. The lower 64 bits are generated at random, and have a finite lifetime.
Unlike IP4, given interfaces have mulitple IPv6 addresses, depending on various factors.
IPv6 addressing gets quite tedious. I've learned enough just to be dangerous.

With IPv6 your home router doesn't have to NAT. It gets the 64-bit prefix from your ISP, and broadcasts that to all nodes on the subnet. They then generate the lower 64-bits themselves, and register it. Or you can do a more stateful approach and have the router itself dole out the lower 64-bits. You can also do both. Which is how I have my network set up.
Your router then acts like a real router for public IPv6 traffic, doing no NATing.
And, if you have multiple subnets, you can request more address space. Here, from Charter, I have my router set up to request a 60-bit prefix, giving 4 bits or 16 total possible subnets. And then you have fun programming you routers to pass those 4-bits to downstrean routers/devices.

Note, I have no real need to do all that subnet prefix shit. It's all just fun and games to play around, and learn how this crap works. The really "fun" thing was dynamic routing. You run some services on the routers where they talk to each other and tell each other the new routes they add, and drop, and all that.
I've got it working over a VPN connection between the new house here and my folks house.
Absolutely no reason to do that, other than playing. But a new subnet can be created here, and the routers, over the VPN talk to each other, and all machines on end then know how about the new subnet and how to reach it.

Speaking as someone who lived in one place for my entire life until last year, I concur. Baltimore is my home town, and it always will be. I'll always be a Ravens fan, and an Orioles fan (no matter how hard the Orioles try to drive me away). There's nothing more beautiful than watching the sun set from the cockpit of a sailboat on Chesapeake Bay, and I can make a crab cake that will make you cry, and strip a blue crab down to a pile of shell faster than a Marine can field strip an M-4.
But Texas is home. I get up every morning and watch the sun rise over my lake and tell myself "You live in paradise". I've watched my son blossom and grow in ways that he never would have in Baltimore, and sometimes I'm so proud that it almost hurts. It's a trite phrase that gets thrown around a lot, but I am living the dream.
And sometimes I wonder what took me so long to get here.

I do still think I could have a relationship, but it'd be tricky. I know I'd have to go really slow. Plus my OCD and some other conditions of mine would have to be negotiated.
I do consider the online thing some good practice. Nothing weird has happened, I'm going really slow with getting to know her, and this person really does appear to be who she says she is. Also doesn't hurt probably that I'm in CA and she apparently is in Florida, for obvious reasons.
