Comedy Legend Norm MacDonald Dies at Age 61, After a Long and Private Battle With Cancer

A huge loss for comedy. And for clear-thinking.

I know many will disagree, but I think he was the funniest man alive, and the funniest man of the late 20th century.

The comedian's longtime producing partner and friend Lori Jo Hoekstra, who was with him when died, said Macdonald had been battling cancer for nearly a decade but was determined to keep his health struggles private, away from family, friends and fans.

"He was most proud of his comedy," Hoekstra said. "He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him. Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that 'a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.' He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly."

He gained a lot of weight the past eight years or so, which I now realize was probably due to being periodically weakened and rendered inactive by chemotherapy.

Norm MacDonald's SNL parody sketch of West Side Story.

Norm MacDonald was sexist and/or honest about the small number of women who are funny at a professional level. That assemblage of clips has an interview with James Downey (SNL writer) at around 5:00, wherein Norm does one of my favorite bits: Forcing people to agree with un-PC things.

He does that in this interview with SNL castmate David Koechner. That show has one of my very favorite jokes he ever did.

A related bit is Norm constantly accusing other people of being racist or sexist or having some other type of un-PC belief, when he's really the instigator of all that.

Norm on white privilege.

Norm turned to vegetarianism later in life, but not strict vegetarianism.

Norm always believed that teachers are the real heroes.

Norm MacDonald talking about the pitches he did for SNL that were rejected.

I was just listening to another comic talk about Norm's "Fake Pitches." Apparently there was some tactical thinking in pitching at each show's pitch meeting. If you pitched a sketch in the pitch meeting, people wouldn't laugh when you read the sketch's script at the next day's table read. So Norm MacDonald (and Kevin Nealon) would just offer fake pitches at the pitch session and then write up new material for the table read.

Norm MacDonald was famously fired from Weekend Update, and then SNL entirely, because he kept saying that OJ Simpson was a murderer. And the head of NBC's Sports and Variety Programming (which oversaw SNL) was Don Ohlmeyer, who considered himself to be one of OJ Simpson's best friends.

He famously -- infamously, to the Hollywood Left -- roasted Bill Clinton to his face at the White House Correspondent's Dinner.

And this wasn't a fake Hollywood compliment roast. This was a real roast.

Norm MacDonald talking about 9/11.

Norm MacDonald talking about religion for 13 minutes.

normmacdonald

That's not a real tweet, but I think Norm would have chuckled.

This one is real, from 2016:

Screenshot (465).png

At about two minutes in, the crowd starts to get it and starts laughing.

That's when I got it. When I first saw this, I thought Norm had been in a car accident or had had a stroke, and they were humoring him during his recovery by giving him this slot. I was kind of sad about it.

Then I started to appreciate what he was doing.

He later revealed that he got all of these terrible jokes from an old "Toastmaster's" book of bad jokes from the 1950s. I think it was his dad's book.

From last year: Norm talking about covid.

I am sure this will be mentioned, but there was a Comedy Central roast where every comedian tried to one up the previous comedian on filthiness. When Norm finally had his turn, he did clean, dad joke type, old school comedian burns. It got more and more funny as he kept going, especially as the comedians looked at him in disbelief. Genius way to do the unexpected and kill it.

That performance was top-tier brilliantly funny. To really understand *why* it is so funny, you need a little bit of background.

The Comedy Central Roast series was awful. It was deliberately and maximally raunchy and dirty to the point of bordering on gross. Comedy Central told the people performing at the Roasts to be as vulgar and borderline as possible. It was the whole idea behind their version of the "Roast" format. So what did Norm do? He went up and told G-rated, milquetoast jokes from old joke books. He did it with a straight face and landed every punchline. The real joke is on the rest of the Roast panel - watching it slowly dawn on them what he what was doing.

I find it side-splittingly hilarious, as well as a fairly ballsy move no one but him would have thought of, let along have the guts to pull it off.

Father #1: My son just graduated medical school and is starting his career as a doctor. I couldn't be more proud of him.

105 Had no idea he was sick. I saw him with Dennis Miller and David Spade in January 2020, geez - no one had a clue what was about to hit the world. They all did a set and at the end came out together for a Q&A. Most questions were for Norm.

One guy said he had been in a bad place lately and he watched Norm videos and they helped him get through whatever he was going through, he never said what. He said - Norm, I just want to ask if I can shake your hand. Norm said - come up here. The guy stepped on the stage and Norm hugged him and let him meet the other two. This is why he was loved, not just liked. Funny as hell, but he was a genuinely good person.

God bless him.

Is it cowardly behavior that prevents you from offing yourself...you've already admitted as an atheist that you serve no purpose...so why do you want to exist?

No one that does not believe in God can answer it...

I have been wondering for awhile now about industrial espionage in professional sports this year. If recent variants are as transmissible as people suggest, then I suspect it wouldn't be very difficult to deliberately infect a practice facility, or a visiting team hotel room cluster.

I think at least for me, it depends on the type of cancer. Sometimes, that route actually works. I've known people who are in remission for several years. But for others, it's simply extending your life a few months. At that point, I'm far more anxious to meet Jesus happy and pain free, instead of wondering why I wished I was dead for 6 months to put off the inevitable.

I'd go with some of the crazy alternative routes, because what's gonna happen? It'll kill me?

EXCLUSIVE - Virginia's former Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who is running to win back his seat in November, was seen mask-less on an Amtrak train from New York to Washington, D.C., in late July - skirting federal mask mandates and Amtrak rules.

Fox News obtained photos of McAuliffe on a train from New York City's Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station on the night of July 29. An Amtrak passenger, who spoke to Fox News on condition of anonymity, took the photos, calling McAuliffe's violation of the rules an "absolute double standard."

Yes, it seems that some of these parasitic treatments might hold some possibilities for cancer treatment. Can't remember the name of the dog-wormer, but there's plenty of videos of people with stage 4 cancers that claim they were cured with $20 de-wormer shit. Also vets saying it cured their dog patients. The harder they fight that, the more likely it seems TBH.

I had testicular cancer. The first couple of chemo sessions were a breeze. Interestingly, chemo got harder and harder every session. I only did three rounds, each round was a couple of weeks long. It was hard, but it was mostly just a grind. They had good meds to keep me from puking all the time.

The surgeries were harder I think. I had a radical orchiectomy (cut off a nut). I had an RPLND (they gut you like a fish, dump your guts on your chest, cut stuff from the back of the inside of your torso, put your guts back in, then sew you up). I had a port installed, then removed. I also had to have surgery to repair a bunch of holes in my abdomen after the sew job of my RPLND didn't hold together. The surgeon told me it looked like swiss cheese, there were so many holes.

266 264 The surgeries were harder I think.

272 I have to admit I missed some of Norm's brilliance. I mean there's superficial stuff, and then there's the deep stuff that you don't get unless you're a professional and your audience is other comics. I think that's the vein he tapped more than most.

Like the Saget roast. He was doing Saget roasting others before he roasted Saget. That was clever and an obvious angle, but only obvious after he did it.

It's why he was a comic's comic more than, I think, an audience's comic. Sorta Andy Kaufmanesque.

My Theory? There is only so much of your immune system, and it is constantly fighting off various threats.

Thus, an antiviral, helping stop a virus, allows more of your immune system to be fighting off cancer.

Which is why I think this current Covid shot is stupid. It 'tricks' your immune system into fighting a virus that is not even there, thus weakening your immune system against actual threats.... like Cancer.

A friend got breast cancer, and they caught it kind of late. She did the chemo for a very long time. And yeah, it builds in your system and your reactions to it worsen. But, she's been in remission for about 5 years. Only recently grew back her hair, and it came in totally curly. Glad it worked for you.

Well, the guy that invented the mRNA process says the same thing. He believes this is entirely the wrong way to use it, and so far all his predictions have been correct. And now people are acting like this isn't something they just pulled out of their asses in a matter of months. Quite a few people have also predicted increase in cancer in the coming months/years, I really hope not. Their whole plan to wipe out the elderly population for the economic benefits could backfire in a huge way when half the 20 somethings are stage 4 in 2036.

Posted by: Broseidon at September 14, 2021 03:23 PM (lQ6B1)

I'd put the also no-longer-with-us Jan Hooks in that category, too. When Andrew "Dice" Clay hosted SNL, and Nora Dunn refused to be a part of that episode, Hooks subtly roasted Dunn for her showboating on the air.

She came out on stage and gave a little monologue about how she, too, was protesting, but by just not giving it her all in the skits. Then she tried to start singing, you know, while she had the spotlight, and Phil Hartman came out to get her off the stage.

It absolutely should not have. The Loral deal was incredibly corrupt, devious, sinister and counter to anything even loosely interpreted as American interests, but Loral was small potatoes compared to what's happening now. Selling some guidance to the Chinese is bad - really bad. Handing entire arsenals of advanced weapons to Taliban for fencing to the Chinese is worse. Getting on the horn with the Chinese and promising to work with them against the United States is far worse. Boasting about that and wrapping it around yourself as virtue is worse still.

Bill Clinton - shitty, criminal, gangland, traitorous Bill Clinton - is the pinnacle of honor and integrity compared to the people we have now.

Yes, sunshine and salt water work miracles for all kinds of skin problems. For some reason I started suffering from psoriasis, it was getting pretty bad. Hadn't been in HI for 5 days and it was mostly cleared up. After 3 weeks, it was gone and never came back.

When I was a kid, I got poison oak so bad once it covered most of my body. There's also a variety of the more "vine like" stuff that doesn't itch so much as it hurts. And you look like a fucking leper. And suddenly, I was 100% immune to the stuff. I could literally roll in it (and did more than once) with no ill effects. My place in the hills was surrounded by the shit - 12' high (no exaggeration).

I don't know if I still have a tolerance to it as I've not been exposed for over a decade. Don't think I'd chance it.

Loral was the moment when a 13 or 14 year old YD said "you know what? My dad's right... there's no defending these Democrats. They are fucking scum. None of them should ever touch power," and I never looked back. I was reading about it in a doctor's office, I remember it that vividly.

I've been fortunate enough in my life to go on vacation the same time and place as many Canadians do. As the song goes, 'you'll have the time of your life'...

So many laughs, so many good memories. Norm was not one of a kind, but representative of so very many of our actual friends to the north.

Posted by: Traitor Joe's Military Surplus, Vaccine and Massage Parlor at September 14, 2021 04:59 PM (dQvv7)

368 I've got to agree that Norm was one of, if not the, funniest comedian of at least the last 40 years. He ranks up there with Kevin Nealon for me, as they were similar.

Norm could easily do a fart joke, but no once could pull off those long strange jokes, where you had no idea where it was going, like him.

He doesn't get ther credit, but he's probably the inspiration for many big comedians (Mitch Hedberg took Norm's routine and just made it stonery)

Posted by: Rbastid at September 14, 2021 05:47 PM (7nVJb)

369 Ace, couldn't agree more, Norm is my favorite comedian hands down. If you haven't seen the Norm MacDonald Show on the interwebs, go to Youtube and check it out, although maybe it's behind paywalls now. The 2 Gilbert Gottfried episodes are my favorites.

370 I'd never heard of Norm MacDonald before this posting, since I haven't watched SNL in decades. It's a shame he died so young (no man is an island, after all), but the snippets I clicked on didn't raise a smile, let alone set me to laughing. I guess I'm not in the target demographic.
