Top Story

  • Facebook has unveiled a new compression algorithm called Superpack that produces files typically 20% smaller than Zip. (Facebook)

It does this not by using a smarter algorithm, but by generating and compiling a custom algorithm on the fly. If the file is large you can attach the code for the new algorithm to the compressed copy and still save space. The decompression side takes that same custom algorithm and runs it in reverse.

Not mentioned in the article: The terms safety, security, or buffer overflow. The words exploit and exploited do appear, but not in the context I'm concerned with.

7 Mornin', all,

My older cat, Chekov (age 14), is not doing well since the return from B'ham. He is listless, not eating enthusiastically, drinking water (but not flooding the litterbox like a diabetic cat would). He usually sits on a pillow on my lap multiple times a day, but has not been doing that much. He's not stumbling as he did before his treatment in B'ham, but he just does not look good. I'm running him to the cat shop this morning. Think good thoughts, all.

That was part of it: The 6-hour trip to B'ham sent him into a kind of shock so that he hid in the hotel room and barely ate or drank. They treated him there, and he was doing quite well until today. His routine is back to his normal now, but I wonder if there is something else, or it's his age. He was frisking and playing and quite normal the day before the hurricane.

14 i AM so pissed at computers I could spit. I have had windows 8.1 forever, and know everyone says it sucks,. The one thing I learned was to stick with one thing as it gets better.

So i had some connection issues recently and then some other issues. I probably foolishly did a "refresh". I know I used to have restore points but not on a CD or flash drive. We did the windows updates and put them on the hard drive. I have had this one for years and at this time I am at a loss.

The refresh was likely a mistake though there is little I miss losing. Crap, even the fonts are not the same. What kills me is is a I am trying to get back basic stuff like proton VPN and it keeps failing. They keep mentioning some Microsoft .net file. Crap, I dont recall even getting a CD with this PC.

I have tried to update everything with Windows update but that has not been enough. Forget the CD i don't have it.

I was wondering if there was a way to go back to a few days ago or if all of that is lost. And if this .net file is so important, is there a way I can download it with not too much trouble?

Mention, in that article, of an Australian "Deregulation Taskforce," about which I know nothing (except that it was "created in July 2019 as part of the federal government's efforts to reduce regulatory barriers and attempt to spur job creation" and a bit more at a link, touting "cutting red tape"), but I laugh to think of a government *decreasing* regulations. 96 Most of the country is liberal. Not leftist. Not conservative. Liberal. The founding documents of the republic are inherently liberal. A lot of us here, if we really get down to brass tacks, are really liberal. Voters often identify as progressive or conservative because they have been convinced by the kayfabe of the Worldwide News Federation that one or the other is the closest remaining representative of Liberalism.

And yet Liberalism as a political force is almost completely dead, at least at the federal level. The only ideologies remaining in DC are revolutionary totalitarianism in one party, and a gutless barbarism in the other.

A new party that embraced Liberalism and rejected naked power-grab barbarity could gain momentum shockingly fast. I would say that Trump is evidence of this.

Inoculation was already pioneered in Asian and African medicine and was a standard practice but involved serious risks, one of which was the fear that those inoculated would then transfer the disease to those around them due to their becoming carriers of the disease

I am trying to undserstand you and want to go along with it. This goes back to "classical liberalism" and also the types like Rand Paul could win if they reminded people about small government and maximum liberty.

I would be shocked it that platform won even two percent in the next ten elections. I like it, I believe in it, but that won't 'make it popular.

The Left is statist now, they are authoritarians and even accept jackboots. I don't think conservatives are even close to that. Their problem is they are scared and don't know what to do. The Left has made such inroads is it almost impossible to fight back. Some choose one item or the other but they know the overton window has been moved so far it is almost unbelievable.

this is always the problem with the left. they conflate science from today or recent past being thoroughly understood and in use back before it was acted on.

Oh someone might have noticed that using the same stuff as an infected person would cause the disease in others but probably thought that a good washing or hanging in the sun would take care of that.

Besides the Indians were also wiped out in the east just by being around Europeans with their diseases that the Indians had no immunity for as they'd never gotten infected by them.

Correlation does not mean causation.

As TJM said, Newsome will probably go medieval on the state now that he's apparently "won."
