That is the information that was presented when I first saw this puzzle, so it would not be fair to withhold it. The trick is to find the "key" first move, which I only found after a long period of experimentation. Which is why it's an 'advanced' problem. So you're job is to make me look bad by finding the solution quickly. I doubt I'd be ever able to see this OTB. 2Q4K/6R1/8/8/7k/8/6rr/6R1 w - - 0 1 Dress Pr0n For the 'Ettes:

It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app. ___________ So that about wraps it up for this week. On another chess note, I got a slightly pleased laugh that the actual Soviet/From Russia-Georgina who the "Queen's Gambit" movie was based on, is suing "Netflix"for being untruthful about her life. The two Infrastructure bills are a huge deal. We'll be living with the consequences forever.
Media focus is on Manchin (D-WV). But Sinema is the key (D-AZ). And she's been MIA and no one talks about her. Assuming no R breaks ranks, and none have so far, the Ds need both to get to 50 to enable Kamala to break the tie. If Sinema stays NO, then Manchin's vote is irrelevant and he'll vote NO to look good back home. If she votes YES, then Manchin will cash in his winning lottery ticket. Is there reason for hope here? Do not kid yourself. This nuclear sub deal with Australia has been in the works for some time thanks to PDT. Smart move as it will free up our subs for other duties and the bucks will go to us and the Brits and not the French and it opens the door to us basing our subs in Australia. Has not happened since WW2.

Two bits of Kubrick news: first, a 4k disc of Clockwork Orange is being released this week. Second, I found an article where Stanley actually *explained* the ending of 2001. He admitted that when you explain it in words, it sounds stupid, and works better in a purely visual medium. I also commented that I've noticed whenever Kubrick was interviewed, he always was very careful to not only use really proper English, but he never used slang or clever turns-of-phrase. Made him sound like even more of an incredible person IMHO. Posted by: qdpsteve (L2ZTs) at September 18, 2021 06:06 PM (L2ZTs) 231

Billy, here's the excerpt, from an unreleased interview Stanley gave in 1980:
"I've tried to avoid doing this ever since the picture came out. When you just say the ideas they sound foolish, whereas if they're dramatized one feels it, but I'll try. The idea was supposed to be that he is taken in by god-like entities, creatures of pure energy and intelligence with no shape or form. They put him in what I suppose you could describe as a human zoo to study him, and his whole life passes from that point on in that room. And he has no sense of time. It just seems to happen as it does in the film." "They had some idea of something that [Bowman] might think was pretty, but wasn't quite sure. When they get finished with him, as happens in so many myths of all cultures in the world, he is transformed into some kind of super being and sent back to Earth, transformed and made into some sort of superman," Kubrick concludes, alluding to the star baby. "We have to only guess what happens when he goes back. It is the pattern of a great deal of mythology, and that is what we were trying to suggest." Yes, I probably should've mentioned this. I doubt the suit is going to go anywhere. It's a fictional story for pete's sake, with the usual disclaimer about any resemblance to
any persons living or dead being coincidental. Reminds me when Bobby Fischer sued the makers of the movie 'Searching For Bobby Fischer' for using his name in the title without his permission. Like his name was licensed property. He was laughed out of court. I think this suit is going to get laughed out of court, too. Posted by: OregonMuse, AoSHQ Thought Leader, Pants Monitor & Social Distancing Professional at September 18, 2021 04:44 PM (qu3rm) ++++ Fischer's complaint was that they used his name without permission, not that they defamed him. I'm for the idea of a serious space program just on general principle, for the challenge of it if nothing else. But it's not clear to me what a manned space program is for exactly. Unless we think we could actually terraform Mars (or less probably Venus), what would we do? We're never leaving our solar system absent some technology so astonishing it would be magical to us.

My favorites are the meeting with the Russians, and Bowman's confrontation with HAL. 2001 is based on Clarke story called The Sentinel. It begins with a lunar survey team that discovers a giant pyramid on the plateau of a mountain whose peak has been artificially sheared off. The pyramid is protected by an invisible force field that only a nuclear explosion can breach.
Then the pyramid immediately sends a radio message out into space. Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at September 18, 2021 06:30 PM (VxC1e) 319

One of the most interesting things to me about 2001 is that the story gains texture and meaning, when you take the time to think about it later.

sock_rat_eez, funny story about the 2001 soundtrack:
The music you hear was all from records Stanley already had in his collection, but he had the idea that the film would need an original soundtrack, so he hired Alex North-- who co-wrote Unchained Melody, among other huge songs-- to create one. Alex looked at the film clips, worked hard, wrote the music, sent his soundtrack score to Stanley, and got paid, but never heard anything else. He wasn't even invited to any premieres. North figured oh well, I'll just go pay to see it myself. So he went to see it, and discovered Stanley didn't use a single note of the soundtrack he had worked so hard to write. I admit it was kind of a dick move for Stan to do that. He made it up to Alex in the 1990s a tiny bit though when a record company (Varese Sarabande?) discovered the lost soundtrack, asked Kubrick if they could release it on CD as "the lost 2001 soundtrack," and Stanley said, sure go ahead. You are all taking my comment way to seriously. What I meant was the only decent restaurants in the country were Indian. British cuisine...wait, I don't think you can even call it cuisine, has to be the most boring food on earth. No matter where you go, there is usually an indigenous cuisine that is unique to that place. Usually involves local spices and vegetables. Even poor third world countries do a better job.

Saw a pic from the "rally" earlier. They were all dressed the same and were obviously LE. I guess the FBI took everyone to Kohl's first.
Posted by: Duke Lowell at September 18, 2021 04:41 PM (kTF2Z) We actually had FBI stake-out a place I worked because of a credible threat. The senior agent looked like a Xerox repairman on his retirement job and his two subordinate agents looked like drug dealers with contacts to the Russian mob. The pics I saw today looked like Treasury agents who normally process background checks and interview people to try and find the UPS store copy machines that are producing $20s, real strack and wearing Sears casuals with identical sunglasses. The Chinese are gonna' do a lot of shit over the next decade to "one up" the White Dragon. (They're tots racist too.)
The bottom line here is that if/when they shoot some poor commies to the moon it'll be a one way ride for 'em. Maybe an Apollo 8 redux, orbit and come home, if they don't use their own shitty Garmin GPS. Celestial mechanics ain't for amateurs.
