Many years ago I worked at a manufacturing plant where a lot of the guys played slam chess every lunch break. Certain tables in the cafeteria had become the slam-chess tables, with chess sets left out all day. Some damn good players. And unlike regular chess, slam chess is fun to watch if you get two evenly matched players goin' at it.

In the Russian TV series of Sherlock Holmes, filmed in the 80s, they add in a scene where Holmes and Watson play chess. (It's the scene where Holmes examines Watson's brother's watch, and makes a series of disturbingly accurate deductions about his nature). I had to laugh at the different way Russians and Americans portray chess playing:
Americans: White moves pawn, Black moves pawn, White moves another piece. Black hunches down to examine the board... lonnnnnnnng pause before next move. Russians: White - Black - White - Black smash smash smash. Game over. They play very fast, none of this contemplative monk stuff. When playing a game of chess by yourself, do you prefer to stand up and walk around to the chair on the other side of the board, or merely stay seated in one chair and rotate the board?

I like the poses and frowning concentration on the players' faces. The rest is rather Impressionistic, at least to my eyes. I like the muted, limited use of color which puts the emphasis on the players and, to a lesser degree, on the chess pieces.
Don't think I would hang it in the house but it is interesting enough to study. BTW, Daumier was capable of realistic drawing with charcoal and crayon. I find that more interesting than his social commentary cartoons and paintings. Posted by: JTB at September 17, 2021 08:49 AM (7EjX1) 93

Just catching up on the last thread. I saw people asking abut the antibody test and how to get it.
If you have a LabCorp around you, you can get the antibody test for $10. They bill the rest to your insurance, which I think is something like $42, and they tell you if your insurance won't pay, you have to pay. Mine accepted it and I suspect most if not all will, at least if LabCorp is in-network for you. You do not need a doctor's order. You make an appointment online with LabCorp and pay the $10 at that time. I had Covid in March, and had my antibodies tested in July. 0.8 is considered positive for antibodies. I got 770.1. Yep, you read that correctly. Regarding antibody testing for someone who has not had Covid and has been vaccinated, it is my understanding that they will not show antibodies unless they have actually been exposed to the virus. I could be wrong on that, but I think the idea is that once you are exposed, the vaccine is supposed to kick in and make antibodies. Posted by: bluebell at September 17, 2021 09:12 AM (wyw4S) 165

ER work must be high-stress. I'm sure a lot of docs and nurses burn out every year. A couple of years ago they would have just quit or gone on sabbatical like people have forever. But there were no pity-points for that. They can't go away quietly now - they must stay and be loud and pontificate about how we're all disappointing them.

it is my understanding that they will not show antibodies unless they have actually been exposed to the virus. I could be wrong on that,
***** Yes. Yes you could. Vaccination (generally speaking) stimulates production of antibodies. Whether the Ab test is positive or not depends on what antibodies that specific test detects. The mRNA vaccines produce many copies of specifically just the spike protein, so that the antibodies produced in response are specific to the spike protein. Natural infection on the other hand presents multiple structural components of the whole virus that can serve as antigens for the creation of a broader spectrum of antibody production, and quite likely a more robust immunity as well as potential cross-immunity among different strains of the same virus. I haven't spent any time looking into the specifics of the various antibody tests, so take these observations for what they're worth. Posted by: Muldoon at September 17, 2021 09:24 AM (m45I2) 199

Posted by: Muldoon at September 17, 2021 09:46 AM (m45I2) ++++ Nowadays? Neither. Since the mid 1960s, most Ivermectin has been manufactured with Synthahorse from Dow Chemical. Although originally targeted for the glue industry, Synthahorse found various markets outside of the initial intended use. When Synthahorse went off-patent in the mid 1990s, various generics are now available and Synthahorse-based Ivermectin production has been generalized among many manufacturers. They canceled the one fiber festival in OR brave enough to schedule this year. It would have been next month. I went on a minor rant with a vendor about how this will likely be the death of these festivals. Vendors won't sign up until they've actually started having festivals again. Inflation will be up and folks will have less money to spend. OR has had one of the lowest levels of Wuflu yet they are still hysterical about it. The little wooden boat festivals are done as well. The idea that you can't walk around boats outside without catching Wuflu is just silly.

False reporting of Covid deaths?? I shant believe it. I shannot.
== Remember the annual death stat? Well deaths from all/any cause are actually up over 2019. 2019 it was like 2.8 in 2020 like 3.3 million. About 570K more deaths in 2020 than in 2019. Whatever the cause. The stats on death at this point are 300k something from/or associated with Covid. Covid isn't the plague. Its not nuthing either, especially if you are 70+. 85 and up hits you really hard. Its almost as if someone designed a cold virus that culls the population at 8-9th decade of life.
