Australia's High Court - that is, our Supreme Court, because our Supreme Courts are lower courts - just pooped in everyone's cornflakes by ruling that if someone posts a defamatory reply to your Facebook post, you are personally liable. (Gizmodo)

That is, not Facebook, and not the person who actually committed defamation.

Now this is Gizmodo and the article is full of vacuous left-wing drivel, but even they see the problem with this, calling it one of the court's "dumbest decisions in recent memory".

Since this decision directly hurts the entire media industry in Australia, though, left and right alike, we are sure to see poorly-formulated and ill-considered legislation rushed through Parliament with bipartisan support to make the situation even worse.

There's more at Australia's ABC - also run by left-wing lunatics - but it doesn't contradict anything at Gizmodo.

Intel's NUC X15 reference gaming laptop seems to get a lot of things right. (WCCFTech)

It comes with (all specs up to) an 8 core 11800H processor, RTX 3070 graphics, 15.6" 165Hz 2560x1440 display, 64GB of RAM, and two M.2 slots (one PCIe 4.0 and one 3.0).

I/O includes Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, three USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports (that is, 10Gbps), WiFi 6 and wired 2.5Gb Ethernet, a full size SD card slot, and a headphone jack.

And it has the Four Essential Keys.

Weight is just under 2kg, which is typical for a full size laptop, though the LG Gram models get well under that.

Price is TBA.

Really the only thing missing is a 16:10 display - it's the more common 16:9 - but other than that it looks pretty solid.
Meanwhile Intel's E-2300 Xeon lineup is here, just in time to be made obsolete. (WCCFTech)

These are low-end server chips based on the 11th generation desktop parts, but 12th generation desktop parts are only a couple of months away.

On the other hand - and it's a pretty important hand - I don't know what the state of support is in sever operating systems for disparate core performance in Intel chips, since the 12th generation parts will be the first from Intel to actually have that.

I moved away from Acronis and over to Easeus after Acronis kept focusing more and more on "the experience" of backing up and restoring your system and I - at the computer hobbyist/enthusiast level - ended up initiating the wrong process on their sh*tty and confusing interface and deleting a hard drive.

Way to go, guys.

Two buttons. That's all you need. Three if you count the advanced options one.

9 I judge most average-consumer focused software on "could my parents use it and not have to call me." We're not talking about things like re-encoding movies in order to move them to an unfriendly, locked-down apple product (that's a joke, guys, calm down), but things like backups and anti-virus programs.

Acronis has gotten shockingly bad, and it's a shame because they were really great around 2005?-2015 or so. Whenever I switched from Norton Ghost.

On a more cheerful note, it looks (repeat: *looks*) like the power is back on in my Da Swamp neighborhood. I've made reservations at a hotel in Hattiesburg, MS, only 2.5 hours' drive from NO. We plan to check out of Birmingham tomorrow, run the ~4 hours to Hattiesburg and set up. On Saturday we'll venture down and see if our places have power and if the A/C and other elements are undamaged. If they're fine, we can run back and return on Sunday. If not . . . well, we're only 2.5 hours away and can check periodically.

News flash: I don't want to go back. If my employer would put me up here for a month or two while I work remotely, I'd happily stay.

Resolution: This is my last f*ing hurricane season in that dump. I can retire and find something else to do somewhere else.

'Twas a very good experience. The Male Room is in a shopping center next to a Winn Dixie. The interior looks like a barbershop in a fine old hotel. The receptionist was pleasant to look at; so was the other hair stylist, a blonde.
Heather had nearly-black hair (she proclaimed she was part Cherokee, like a lot of people do) cut in cute bangs, a roundish sweet face, a few extra pounds and at least one tat on her arm, and a delightful smile. Plus she *knew her business* and cut my hair and beard just as I requested.

$39 for the cut and trim, and $10 for her tip. Twice as much as I usually spend -- but this time it was worth it.
