The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"It would have been nice if he would have come out with a gun. We would have shot him up a lot. But he didn’t because he was a coward. When someone chooses to give up, we take them into custody peacefully."Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd

Quote II

“After all this time, I have a sense of relief and a sense of vindication. I wish I could have remained teaching all this time. Today’s decision validates that I did nothing wrong by being a gay man.” Lonnie Billard

Quote III

“This throwaway culture has marked us. And it marks the young and the old. It has a strong influence on one of the tragedies of today’s European culture,” Pope Francis

Quote IV

“I have certain rules I live by. My first rule: I don’t believe anything the government tells me. Sooner or later the people in this country are going to realize: the government does not give a fuck about them. The government doesn’t care about you, or your children, or your rights, or your welfare, or your safety. It simply doesn’t give a fuck about you. It’s interested in its own power. That’s the only thing keeping it and expanding it wherever possible.”
George Carlin

Quote V

“I just keep thinking what would happen if the commissioner of baseball called up the guy who runs this company, and says, ‘Hey I don’t think we should do this."Minnesota Senator Tina Smith

Quote VI

“The delicate balance between humans and bears has been upset,” and anyone who thinks a bear may have entered their home should call law enforcement,CA El Dorado County sheriff’s Sgt. Simon Brown

Quote VII

“It’s a miracle. He’s just clinging to mum. Anthony Elfalak

Following up Quote IV, Who is a bigger enemy our State Department or the Taliban?

State Dept. won’t give private rescue flights OK to leave Afghanistan
The State Department said it will not formally approve the departure of chartered planes from Afghanistan carrying Americans and allies — complicating efforts by private citizens to complete the evacuation of the left-behind, according to an email obtained by Fox News.

In a Sept. 1 email to attorney Eric Montalvo, a former US Marine who has organized a series of evacuation flights, a State Department official acknowledged that any flights taking Afghan refugees to Europe or the Middle East for initial processing “may require some indication from the USG [US government] that we ‘approve’ of this charter flight” in order to land.

The email continued: “DOS [State Department] will not provide an approval, but we will provide a ‘no objection’ to the destination country government via the U.S. Embassy in that country.”

The surveillance state continues to implement new equipment. How long before these bots roam the sidewalks of America?

Singapore Police to Deploy Snitch Bots That Search for 'Undesirable Social Behaviors'
Two "Xavier" robots will roam crowds in Toa Payoh Central.

If you’re wandering around Singapore anytime soon, take some time to wave hi to your friendly neighborhood snitch bot.

Singapore’s Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX) will be deploying two robots named “Xavier” that the agency says use cameras with a 360-degree field of vision and analytics software to detect “undesirable social behaviors” in real time. First reported by Business Insider, the robots are designed to detect activities such as public smoking, violation of pandemic restrictions (i.e., groups of more than five people), and illegally selling goods on the street. Other behaviors the agency said the robots can snitch on include the use of motorized vehicles or motorcycles on pedestrian walkways and “improperly parked bicycles.”

If the politicians really cared about health instead of absolute control over people they might want to study and pay attention to the following: New Study Shows Breakthrough Infection Risk Not All It's Cracked Up to Be

This is the first detailed data about so-called “breakthrough” infections — positive tests from people fully vaccinated. The data suggests that politicians and public health officials are wildly overreacting to the delta variant’s effect on the already vaccinated.

New York Times:

Here’s one way to think about a one-in-10,000 daily chance: It would take more than three months for the combined risk to reach just 1 percent.

“There’s been a lot of miscommunication about what the risks really are to vaccinated people, and how vaccinated people should be thinking about their lives,” as Dr. Ashish Jha of Brown University told my colleague Tara Parker-Pope.

Of course, this study will be largely ignored by politicians. They will go on pretending that vaccinated people can contract COVID-19 almost as easily as the unvaccinated.

Of course it makes politicians feel better. Because "we did something". Although it won't change human nature or the Religion of Pieces.

New Zealand responds to terrorist stabbings by taking knives off supermarket shelves

In response to a terrorist incident in an Auckland, New Zealand supermarket in which 6 people were stabbed, a supermarket chain said it was removing all knives from its shelves – perhaps permanently.

When a terrorist entered an Auckland supermarket last Friday, he started screaming “Allahu akbar” (Arabic for “God is great” and then began stabbing people with a knife. The man was shot and killed, allegedly within 60 seconds of his attack, according to Auckland Police Commissioner Andrew Coster. The terrorist was “a supporter of ISIS ideology,” said New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Just thinking outloud here, I wonder if this knife wielding murderer was known to authorities.

Carbon indulgences, how 16th century.

The world’s biggest carbon-sucking machine is switching on in Iceland

We have to start removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to have any chance of averting the worst impacts of global warming, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said last month.

The fossil fuel economy must be run in reverse, effectively. The simplest and lowest-cost way to do that—planting trees—requires a lot of land relative to the scale of intervention that’s needed. So a handful of companies have been tinkering with “direct air capture” (DAC)—essentially, big CO2-sucking machines.

The Orca launch follows on the heels of a $10 million contract Climeworks inked last week with reinsurance giant Swiss Re. The insurance company was essentially buying an undisclosed volume of carbon offset credits to count against its own carbon footprint. Climeworks hasn’t publicly disclosed its price per ton, but a Swiss Re press release described it as “several hundred dollars.”

But the name of the game is be hit and hit back - Warren Zevon

Five days after being hurt in a boxing ring in Canada, boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata has died.

Groupe Yvon Michel, the organizer of the Montreal event, announced on Thursday that Zapata, 18, died from injuries sustained in a fight with Marie-Pier Houle on Saturday night at IGA stadium.

It isn't only the elderly that are disposable, it is the unborn as well.

Doctors at a hospital in Birmingham mistakenly terminated a healthy unborn baby in a procedure instead of its sickly twin.

The unidentified mother decided to abort one of the fetuses because it was suffering from restrictive growth, which increases the chances of stillbirth and puts the healthy baby at risk.

During the procedure at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation, surgeons accidentally terminated the wrong twin.

The 2019 incident emerged in a Freedom of Information Act survey of hospital blunders.

There are more than two million safety incidents reported in the NHS every year, with more than 10,000 of those resulting in severe harm and death.

For those who still care about the NFL, Tom Bradys spouts off about a new rule change in the NFL.

In a recent interview with the Tampa Bay Times, Tom Brady reiterated his belief that the NFL’s new policy on jersey numbers is going to make it more difficult for him to win his eighth Super Bowl.

The 44-year-old complained back in April when the NFL changed its rules about numbers to allow quarterbacks, punters and place-kickers to wear numbers 1-19, defensive backs 1-49, offensive linemen 50-79, defensive linemen 50-79 and 90-99, linebackers 1-59 and 90-99, and running backs, tight ends and wide receivers 1-49 and 80-89 by calling the policy “dumb” on social media.

Yawn, I don't really care.

It must have been some really good shit. Genius Award.

The Michigan State Police are investigating a crash that has left one person with life threatening injuries.

According to police, early investigating has determined that three people crossed I-94 near Martin Street around 12:50 a.m. Sunday morning.

After reaching the other side, one of the pedestrians turned around and entered the westbound I-94 lanes of traffic. It is suspected they were looking for a dropped item.

Countless caring people involved in Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

In the first operation of its kind in Israel, 1-year-old twins conjoined at the head were safely separated on Thursday.

The twin sisters are expected to live a healthy life following the surgery. The operation took place at the Be'er Sheva's Soroka Medical Center with a medical team of over 50 people, according to the Israeli publication Ynet.

“They are expecting a full recovery,” said Dr. Mickey Gideon, director of pediatric neurosurgery at the medical center. “It was a moment of weeping and laughter with the family. For the first time the family can hold the babies separately.”

I believe that Dr. Ben Carson is the first person in the world to have done that without one of the twins dying. They had done a tv movie about him. Then he came out as a conservative and a Trumps supporter so the left doesn't like him.

The County ME ruled it natural causes on the theory that you get shot 64 times you die, naturally.

This concerned me because I don't have a mask, and have never worn a mask, but the very thought of wearing one of those paper smile suppressors makes it hard for me to breathe and I start to panic and lash out blindly. I did bring along a bandana, hoping that would be suitable.

The two guards at the metal detector at the door didn't have masks. The gal behind the check-in window didn't have a mask. That was encouraging.

Then the gal informed me the trials had been cancelled and I was free to go. Worked for me!

I watched Quigley Down Under last night for the first time ever and I must say I was underwhelmed to the point of falling asleep. Well, except that Alan Rickman played a perfect bad guy.

Tonight I watched In The Mouth Of Madness on the strength of a TJM Review. Great (somewhat goofy) psychological horror that was also (perhaps unintentionally) absolutely hilarious. Sam Neill was his usual excellent playing the lead.

Aside from that little problem, since most of the CO2 resulted from burning coal, where exactly do they propose to put all this reconstituted carbon? The weight of the CO2 in the atmosphere is roughly 3,000 gigatons. If a third of that is anthropogenic and needs removal, they'd have to find a place to store on the order of 1,000 gigatons of carbon.

226 Aside from that little problem, since most of the CO2 resulted from burning coal, where exactly do they propose to put all this reconstituted carbon? The weight of the CO2 in the atmosphere is roughly 3,000 gigatons. If a third of that is anthropogenic and needs removal, they'd have to find a place to store on the order of 1,000 gigatons of carbon.
Posted by: pep at September 07, 2021 09:28 PM (ZsR3z)

One thing that they are doing is pumping huge amounts of CO2 from industrial processes into very deep depleted oil/gas reservoir. So deep, the normal pressure is such that the CO2 condenses to a liquid. But, basically, it still consumes a fuckton of energy to compress the CO2 and pump it down, and it's just kicking the can down the road. Sooner or later, some natural process will cause those CO2-laden reservoirs to "burp".

One of the religious positions against the vaccines is based on the use of hek-293 protocols used in the vaccine production. HEK293 is a cell line derived from human embryonic kidney cells grown in tissue culture. They were taken from the kidneys of aborted fetuses. It is a common protocol used in the majority of vaccines we currently use. To simplify the process think of the Hek-293 as an incubator.

245 Buying a vehicle? Maybe.
Biden's new CAFE standards will be kicking in and car manufacturers are already moving to accommodate them.

What does that mean? _ Downsizing,
two examples: 1. A mid size Hyundai a few years ago you could get a V-6, now, a 2.5 four banger with a blower is an upgrade.
2. An F-150 comes with a sewing machine engine if you want a V-8 you buy a Super Duty.

This is an analogue of Carter 1978.
Now is the time to buy your - for the next ten years car. It won't get better for a long time.

In November the 50th anniversary (one year late) edition of Let It Be is being released.

One of the things it will contain is a copy of the album the Beatles originally wanted to release, called Get Back. It was supposed to be a throwback to 50s rock and their early 1960s sound.

The proposed cover for Get Back eventually became the cover of Beatles 1967-1970.

Still, the constant jabber about a virus that doesn't really seem to be that bad. Maybe. Cause a year and a half later, it's still hard to get a definitive handle on what is going on. It's not even clear if the supposed tests give correct answers. The governments nearly everywhere can't content themselves with living high on the hog with confiscated money, they have to keep trying to force everyone to jump like frogs. Any media including sports and hobby media is stuffed full of blatantly ridiculous propaganda. People think they are fighting noble battles because they disagree with the plainly Biblical statements in the religion and somehow they think they should be able to ignore the tenets and still think of themselves as members of the religion. The constant complete attempts at social and lifestyle upheaval to fight a supposed crisis of which there has been no observable evidence in the 25 years they have been going on about it. Why doesn't it all just stop? Why don't people just laugh at them and ignore it?

Many of those Republican base voters carry guns in their cars, and have done so for years. This is why Texas went to Constitutional carry, got voter reform, the in state no permit suppressor law, and the heartbeat law.

Believe or not, legislators listen to people with guns, which is why the Demonrats are trying desperately to outlaw guns.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper signed a bill last week banning the 'Carolina Squat', a popular truck and SUV modification with a raised front and lowered rear.

It's a fad appearance modification, which I would think would be pretty dangerous unless you only drove the vehicle at slow speeds around town. At freeway speeds the air underneath has to lift weight off the front wheels and mess up your grip for turning. I don't think they use hydraulics either like lowriders do so once you set the truck up like that it stays that way

354 @277 This is the tone at every tech site I read, among their commenters. Every single one. They all want us dead.

----------

The vast majority of "tech news" websites are all owned by the same company. This happened back when Gawker started collecting tech news and video gaming sites. When Gawker went bankrupt, the tech news sites were sold as a complete bundle to their current owner. The viewpoints of the people running those sites has not changed in the meantime, and they all quote each other and reinforce their narratives in an incestuous fashion. People who have different opinions probably stopped visiting the sites when every last one of them came out against the public during Gamergate a while back.

There's diversity of opinion in tech news. But you have to get off the beaten path and go find some of the lower profile sites.

There are plenty of conservatives in comp sci. But a lot of them are forced to keep a low profile at work because of the nature of their co-workers. Others are parts of companies that elements of tech and government are trying to bankrupt and drive out of business.

On the other hand, if your born with XY you can beat up women if you claim you are as well, and society has a much different standard of punishment in that regard.

But I am sure their are no sociopaths who have or will figure that out.

406 Yep, nothing to fear from COVID if you've had the jab but...just ignore Israel, having an outbreak with everyone jabbed plus a booster.

Also ignore the Biden Junta talking about making everyone here get the first booster then did nothing in Israel.

409 364 I was in the jury pool once.

I actually was called in with one other group (I think it was kind 40 to a group) and witnessed jury selection.

The kept asking potential jurors if they had ever had contact with the police. Several were like "No" and everyone else was like "I had a speeding ticket", etc.

I was sitting out in the gallery thinking "Oh shit, I hope they don't get to me".

A bunch of people raised their hands, he brought them up to talk to them. One person was related to the defendant (what are the odds), everyone else gave a bullshit answer of "I don't like cops" or something like that.

He kept all those people for the jury, told them politely they were assholes and were going to pay for it, and sent everyone else home.

418 Regarding religious exemption,

Let me say up front that those who impose a vaccinate mandate as a condition of employment or entry are the moral and ethical kin to the guard outside the showers at Auschwitz.

As a Protestant Christians, even the founding Fathers of the country in which this company exists, believed that we are made in the image of God and thus have unalienable Rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

A company has an economic relationship with me that involves me trading a useful service in exchange for compensation. What the company proposes is that they take ownership of my body, not for 2000 hours a year, but for the rest of my life. I can get the Kill Shot on Monday and they still sever the relationship on Tuesday and I can't undo the Kill Shot - it is with me until I die, and I will suffer alone all of the calamity that follows.

What they offer is on par with what Jim Jones offered his followers.

In law school I got called for jury duty in Boston. No one gets out of jury duty except cops, judges, and surgeons who have surgery scheduled. Anyways, I was a law student and quite eager to serve, especially since it was during Spring break and I had nowhere to go, plus I ended up get $165 + T money. It was a murder trial at the Dorchester Yacht Club that happened just as I was arriving at school the year before. The name sounded familiar but that's it. I was originally seated in the jury box and after voir dire, was the only original member left. The defense attorney's opening words are the best thing I ever learned during law school:

"Shit, fucking, shit." Pause. "You will hear these words during this trial." That was brilliant. No guilty. (Because he wasn't, essentially by the coroner's admission. The decedent was also an I-95 drug-running "debt collector". GRTBR

Mrs. Sock has been called at least half dozen times. It's never convenient because there is no one to cover for her at work. Never the less she has never tried to avoid it. She's sat for two trials. One was thankfully short. The other took three weeks. She would sit on the jury, come home eat dinner and go to the office and work until midnight. She was called this spring but excused because she wouldn't wear a mask. I have never been called in my 44+ years of being a registered voter. Kinda ticks me off.

Later he told me well over half was some kind of dig. I then said since you voted for Trump how did it feel to pay to be the butt of jokes? I detected a small glimmer of understanding.

680 JuJu, I believe Buster's major schtick was, as he was described at the time, being "the great stone face." No matter how crazy things got, his character tried to stay 100% rational.

OTOH, and as I recall, Chaplin's Tramp was constantly desperately trying to stay alive and/or get out of his bad luck slump.

683 I did comment #666. That's not going to end well.

RE: SNL - Dennis Miller is damn perceptive and appropriately introspective. These form the basis of his humor which I love.

I remember a couple decades ago watching a call-in show with him on it... No idea what it was but he was on the air taking calls. Someone called in and told Dennis that Dennis had made him laugh a couple times during the show and that he should consider going into comedy.

Dennis was already an established comedian (hence the call in TV show). He said that call made him reconsider everything he'd ever done. He could deal with hecklers and boos, but this guy pantsed him so gently that he was dumbstruck on TV.

I get they assume we are old and pay people to make these choices. But it is odd to me. Why were the pop songs that came out right when I was leaving high school for college decided to be the only songs they play in supermarkets?

I don't think many of them were that good to be honest. Some of them I despise because after a thousand times, they get a bit stale. Didn't anyone make some art before or after that time? Crap, it has been 35 years.

I was country when country wasn't cool. But everyone else listened to them pretty much all the time. Another thing about music is we often link it to certain times in our lives, and even relationships. So I have a soft spot for some of the music from that time, only because of some good and bad times.

I understand nostalgia. But it is odd to me that the supermarkets play the stuff from 86,87, and 88 so often. Most pop is designed to be throw away. But obviously in this case that did not happen.

there is a term for that. If something is one your mind, you notice it a lot. I have said the same about many music references here. So much some care about I have never heard of.

But if you get into a certain genre, or even a country like France, when it pops up, you notice it. I know there is a term for this but I am not going to look it up a this point.

Maybe i only notice these songs for a reason. But really i know that is not the case. They play them all the time as if it was 1987. Some bean counter figured out that that is the best play for the stores. But I agree most this stuff was supposed to be throw away music. I think the singers would be surprised we still lean on this stuff.

761 Joe Biden: "None of them were shouting or complaining. Every one of them were thanking me as if it was something special . . . that I was here."

I hope Joe strokes out on live TV. They will have a hard time muting the cheering.

That's why you cut out the seeds.

764 Mmm cucumbers.

I learned something this summer that you all probably already knew- if you keep your cucumbers in cold water in the fridge after picking (or buying) they stay super crisp. Makes a huge difference

Was just thinking that. I thought yesterday was Monday. Then thought today was Thursday. So I got all the trash ready like its trash day. I take pleasure in that, knowing nothing is getting recycled. No box is getting broke down. I wish I could put an empty box as big as a garbage bag in the bag and set it out.

768 you do NOT want to feed me raw cucumbers if you plan on being near me in enclosed spaces afterwards.

Thanks, guys!

And with that I'm out the door. Another day, another 50 cents

772 Up early, all, and trying to stave off boredom. I've shaved and have about 2 hours before it gets light enough for me to drive to the park to work out. God, I am tired of this camping out! Which, despite being comfortable, is what this is compared to being at home.

776 At 9 this am I go to the barbershop The Male Room. This is the place, I think, that made the national news in May of '20 for refusing to shut down completely in the face of governmental lockdown. I'd buy a haircut and beard trim from them just to show support. But the staff are all pleasant-looking if not downright attractive women -- I stopped in yesterday to make my appointment, and was very pleased. No face diapers and no signs on the doors!

Apparently you also get a consultation about your hair style and other grooming matters. Their grooming tips on their website regarding shaving are more than half right, which is better than I expected.

778 Times says chances of getting COVID if vaccinated is less than 1/10,000 per day. Chances of getting COVID if not vaccinated is not much more than 1/10,000 per day.
To-date 40,280,001 confirm cases in the USA. Since March there has been 18 months or about 540 days.
40280001/331000000(US Pop.)/540 = 0.0000225
0.0000225 x 10,000 = 2.25 chances per 10,000 per day. So yes, vaccines lessen your chance of an infection but do not come close to eliminating it.

779 Thank God this future pedophile was reinstated by the courts. This is so conservative my heart hurts. If we don't allow our boys to be molested by AIDS riddled sodomites we will never win another election. As conservatives we must get on our knees and accept the gift this AIDS riddled homosexual wants to give us or be banded bigots.

780 The "delicate balance" between humans and bears is all pretty much on the side of the bears unless the human comes equipped with a small artillery piece or something.
