Hey, cat fans,
Had to take the older cat, who had not been eating and was staggering a little when he walked, to the emergency vet this morning. (He *would* pick a holiday to be sick.) He was dehydrated, and his blood glucose was kind of high. But they told me that cats can sometimes spike their blood sugar under stress. He's in the hospital until tomorrow morning for fluids, an anti-emetic, an anti-diarrheal, and an appetite stimulant. Since he hadn't been sick in the slightest before this past Tuesday when we bugged out, maybe this is an isolated incident and he won't need insulin injections, etc. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at September 06, 2021 11:53 AM (quCFJ) 58

Used to practice ritual tackle sacrifice on the coast. Cuban guy taught me how to get fresh bait from coastal rocks, bring gasoline in a soda bottle to splash on rocks, collect nasty biting worm things for bait. Not state approved method, but fishies liked em.

So, the reporter at USA Today who "fact checked" Biden looking at his watch admitted that he was wrong. His "fact check" was insistent that Biden never checked his watch until the ceremony was over.
He blatantly did not, he checked his watch repeatedly. So he did a retraction and said "oopsie, that was an error" ... which it was not, it was just sloppy work because he didn't WANT Biden to look bad and wanted to dunk on the right. But worse, he then went on to get mad at people for pointing out his stupid ridiculous error by saying: "It's easy to dunk on journalists when we get things wrong. I get it - to many, we're just another name on a screen. But behind that screen is a person trying to do their best." The problem is, this wasn't an article that had an error, it was a FACT CHECK that he got totally, inexcusably wrong. But his last line... that's the saddest part. I think he's right: this IS the best they can offer. That's how incompetent and stupid they are. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 06, 2021 12:08 PM (KZzsI) 158

In both Vietnam and Afghanistan it was neither incompetence nor negligence. In both wars the ending was a deliberate and intentional action by Democrats to achieve the end they desired; failure of the US military.
I know people are going to cite Hanlon's razor, and cry "never ascribe to malice that which may be explained by stupidity". However there is such a thing as malice, and the deliberate and intentional acts of government, much as they did during the holocaust, can and do rise to the level of malice. When stupid people do things that turn out badly, they have no explanations for what they did; that is because they never intended the outcome they achieved. When malicious acts become apparent, malicious actors have a whole slew of excuses and narratives ready to try to cover up for their acts, because they knew what the outcome would be. We are seeing the behavior of malicious, not stupid or negligent, people in the aftermath of Afghanistan. A teenager elevated to the purple as a proxy for his father and other warring nobles, he had little agency in the final collapse and the conquerors let him live out his life in peace. The manipulative father, the real power behind the fall, was not so lucky. Civil war, which is pretty much an ongoing thing to some extent at all times in a place like A'stan - that's what makes it A'stan - looks pretty much over, for now. A'stan geeks who follow things closely seem to believe resistance in Panshir Valley has been crushed. District capital taken by Talib.
However, it is A'stan, so this too is a temporary thing, or at least not cut/dried as we are used to. Resistance will remain and flare up, and not just there. Our nearly sole interest in A'stan is/was preventing its use as a safe-haven by AQ. AQ was there, still, and if Trump's deal had been followed - and had actually gone according to plan - that would still be true.
But AQ globally was effectively destroyed earlier, the environment for it to operate or survive also radically altered on the state level. For the most part. Pakistan, Iran, and failed-state enclaves like parts of Syria or Yemen or Somalia will still be there for jihadists and salafists of varying stripes. Biggest loss in A'stan is the close contact with the enemy that is key to intel. But that was likely inevitable, as A'stan was simply not sustainable any longer as a direct US intervention. And without us, as we see, any structure we helped develop was likely to disintegrate as the place returned to mean. Posted by: rhomboid (OTzUX) at September 06, 2021 12:41 PM (OTzUX) 364

Biggest loss in A'stan is the close contact with the enemy that is key to intel. But that was likely inevitable, as A'stan was simply not sustainable any longer as a direct US intervention. I'm still infuriated with that sidebar ivermectin story. Its just one of dozens of stories lately where the press simply lies, or goes with a lie, to push the fear and Wuhan Flu narrative.
Over and over I keep seeing stories where the media claims HUGE HORRIFIC NUMBERS then has to backtrack because the numbers were false, or the percentages are wrong, or they just did a misleading recount. And what's even more frustrating is how the media is treating every single positive test of Wuhan Flu as "a case". Not only are there a lot of false positives, but most actual positives are... people who weren't even aware they had the crud. They imply by omitting details that every kid that tests positive is dying in a hospital bed. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 06, 2021 01:06 PM (KZzsI) 471

I have a question for the Horde:
Why is it people are fine with humans being murdered in horrible ways in a movie, but hate it when a dog gets killed? The most infamous example I can think of is Jurassic World, where dinosaurs are rampaging through LA, I think it is, and T Rex goes through town. She gets to a home where a guy is living and his dog is outside. The dog barks then hides, because horrendous monster. The T Rex tears the place apart and eats the man! You can't see the dog any more, oh no! But then there's a shot of it climbing out of its little Snoopy house and the audience sighs. Who cares about the guy right? As long as Rover lives! Yay! Uh....
