45 I read a biography of Juan Gris several years ago. Of all of the great artists of that era--Picasso, Matisse especially--Gris was the most sincere of them. He believed he could find Truth in art and it's fair to say neither Matisse nor Picasso or many (or any) of the rest ever really gave a damn about truth, much less Truth. I've always privately compared Gris to El Greco. Neither had the raw talent of their contemporaries but both had a kind of absolute conviction that came through in their work and made it worthwhile and lasting.

52 One of the neat things about Gris is that, while Cubism is meant to invoke an image, Gris adds actual textures to his 2D works to enhance the experience. For example, if the forms are meant to be rough in texture he'd add sand or the like to the paint to create that feeling in the viewer's mind. It looks like he might have done something similar to the cookies, but it's hard to tell.

I keep thinking back to those couple of cruise ships at the beginning of the pandemic that had thousands of passengers on board and COVID was making its way through. Not everyone even got COVID, even though tight-quarters like a cruise ship should be the perfect breeding ground.

I think a more honest reckoning would include research into why some people on those ships didn't get it, and extrapolate those %'s over the general population to say X% are able to fight off COVID successfully despite no vaccination or prior infection.

Also it's neat to appreciate how few people are "vaccinated" at any given time. You are not considered vaccinated until two weeks after the second shot, and you require a booster shot (of the same 2019 chemical) after what, five months?

All those people who got their injection back when they were first available aren't considered vaccinated any more, are they?

Probably. These people always exist. There are people who appear to be immune to AIDS, too - just not very many. This is the mechanism through which species evolve to survive plagues. If something really bad comes and wipes out 90% of you, the 10% who are by random chance unaffected or marginally affected are fine and will rebuild out of the ashes. That there are some people who are not susceptible to COVID should be unsurprising. I'll bet those people rarely get colds, too.

Now we know why Diamond Princess happened the way it did. It was never possible for more than 20% of the people on that ship to get seriously-symptomatic Covid-19..."

Because the mass exodus of women from the home caused a surge in the labor force, which meant that individual wages didn't keep up with inflation. Had women not entered the workforce en masse courtesy of women's lib, that might not have happened.

That is an extremely simplistic view of it, though. Women entered the workforce but many at that time (the Proud Career-First Woman thing really hit its stride in the 80s, not the 70s) did so because they had to, and they had to because hubby's wages weren't keeping up with inflation. The large-scale entry of women into the workforce helped mask the inflation problems on net household income, but they did so at that time not so much because they were "liberated" but because inflation was eating their standard of living and something had to give.

Something else regarding Joe - and Ida - bothers me. The last time a major storm hit the Northeast - Sandy - the region received tens of billions of dollars of aid as relief. In NYC, for instance, a portion of that money went to build...a Second Avenue Subway. Not really part of flood remediation, as far as I can tell. All that money spent, and NYC still wasn't prepared for a big storm.

Another grift coming from NYC, and no media is going to even ask any questions about what happened to that last slug of cash.

My admiration of Aussies and Kiwis have gone done a lot during the Chinese Lung Flu. But the Aussies really started the wussification process when the government demanded they start turning in their guns back in 1996 and the Kiwis followed about 2 years ago when a FOREIGNER shot and killed a bunch of people and the government did a massive gun grab.

Someone here said recently that the government of Australia is run by the descendants of the prison guards and the rest of the population are the prisoners, or something to that effect.

381 "Disaster relief" is simply bonus grift that was unforeseen. Honestly, very little, if any funding for project X, Y or Z is used for the stated purpose. It's all grift for the local government to do whatever the state or Feds want.

$4.7M for bike lanes ends up with a county pickup truck with a couple dudes laying cones for a week. That's followed by months of tied up traffic with no apparent work. The end result are some painted lines that do nothing more than narrow the vehicle lanes. For 2 miles.

thousands of minutes, well ... that's an interesting way of phrasing it. i wonder how many thousands of minutes...

i know there's no math, but they're saying the wait time is approaching 17 hours minimum? almost a full day at that hospital to be seen? i find this more than a little difficult to believe.

The funny thing about subverting expectations is that when everyone does it, it becomes the expectation. Nobody any longer expects a painting, sculpture, or architectural design to be good. For a couple generations now.

But the people who make visual arts, such as they still exist, continue pumping out the effluent and calling it avant-garde. Movies are there, now - if an everyday bumpkin like me dreams up "The Transaction," then that's the new expectation.

Same with music, writing, and the rest. It's all yesterday's news, forever.

420 @407: I disagree, by and large. Not all cubism is good, but I view it as a reaction to, say, a still life that is literally still. The subject matter in a painting doesn't move - it's a single point in time.

Cubism seems to be a reaction to that by taking disparate items in a painting and painting them in such a way that suggest movement (or at least the passage of time).

Because the shutters in the painting above are painted the way they are the almost suggest movement. The one on the left is solid enough, but the left one seems like it's a few moments before or after the scene of the painting.

The ukulele/wine glass/bottle are arrayed such that it isn't a single point in time. It seems like more of a hodge podge of a memory, rather than a traditional scene. My $.02 - I kind of like it.

432 @420 -- We'll have to agree to disagree. There are plenty of ways of bringing "movement" to a composition, and this "painting" (it's paint on a canvas, therefore could be called a "painting") displays none of them.

This painting shows absolutely no understanding of perspective, use of color, layout/composition, nor any regard for the elements which should theoretically invoke a response in the viewer. It doesn't give one the sense of a body of water, the joy of music, an appreciation of a nice glass of wine, nor taste of whatever those things in the bowl are supposed to be. The entire thing is most evocative of a trash dumpster, not a beautiful day indulging in a light snack overlooking the water, having just laid down one's valued instrument and paused in the making of lovely music.

I just threw up in my mouth a little. Super hero movies weren't bad, but they created a template and started pumping them with no incentive to invest in the characters. And killing the bad guy every time is cheesier than letting him escape. No effort. Simple, clean ending, which isn't life.
