There is still time left in this Labor Day Weekend to do some projects around the home that will increase its value. Here are some of those ideas.

Buying a house can be a great investment, but only if you increase its resale value while you live there. That means exploring which remodels and upgrades are worth the time and effort.

Instead of losing yourself in a sea of home improvement ideas and dreams, evaluate which pursuits come with the highest return on investment (ROI) to ensure you not only improve your space for you and your family but for potential buyers in the future as well.

Horse, cart, some assembly required. Genius Award Winner.

MILTON — A member of the Clinton Township Fire Department was allegedly driving a horse and buggy while intoxicated on May 30 in Watsontown and attempted to bribe an officer into letting him go, according to Watsontown Police Department.

Samuel Lapp Zook, 19, of Green Pine Road, Montgomery was charged with two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and four summary offenses: Two counts of not having proper lighting, and one count each of illegal purchase, consumption, possession or transportation of alcohol; and operating a vehicle as an underage person with alcohol. The charges were filed by Watsontown Patrolman Christopher Snyder in the Milton office of District Judge Michael Diehl.

Snyder reported that he observed the black horse-drawn carriage traveling southbound at 1:46 a.m. May 30 in the 10 block of Main Street without any working front lights or rear flashing red lights commonly used on those vehicles. Due to the violations and concern for the safety of the horse, Snyder said he stopped the carriage driver in the 400 block of Dickson Avenue just south of the entrance to the Watsontown Boat Launch.

Moose in muddy predicament rescued by men in Timmins, Ont.

Wild animal stuck in mud up to its head was pulled free with straps and Argo ATV

With the help of a couple of men from Timmins a moose is now moving freely in the bush.

Last Wednesday, a friend had called prospectors Maurice Valliere and Pat Greba to come out to the bush, north of the northeastern Ontario city, where a male moose had become stuck in mud.

22 The Taliban is unlikely to be an uncontested power for the same reason that our puppet government was not an uncontested power; such a thing is not how Afghanistan rolls. So, yes, I'd be shocked if some terrorist sites don't show up there in the not too distant future. Question is, will we learn from our mistakes or just piss away more of our dwindling geopolitical capital the next time around.

Sounds Marxist to me.

Close, which is why the lie works. The labor is only tangentially what gives it value. What actually gives a thing value is how much someone else wants it (compared to the effort it would take to do it themselves). But anything of (finite, tradable, non-supernatural) value came to be because someone spent time growing, harvesting, collecting, or manufacturing it.

No, which is what's wrong with the labor theory of value. But when I see you with it back in the states, and want to buy it it, I'm paying for not having to bother taking the trip myself.

Also, I was under the general impression that diamonds are mined, so it's the labor of whoever dug it up that would "responsible" for producing it (I'm not sure how to value the dumb luck of their dropping it where you could find it).

In any case, the way I read it, the point of the quote is anti-marxist, namely if you want stuff other people have produced, you should be doing something productive yourself so you can trade. Where "productive" is determined by the people you're looking to trade with.

Here at the hq, for example, it seems like I have not seen Cannibal Bob for months, and I always seem to ask about him when nobody else knows? It makes me wonder if he's ok.
I am also wondering about Mrs Peel who I read on a previous ONT was struggling with some serious bad feelings.

Labor theory of value is a phenomenological explanation of economics, it tries to explain through logic what is seen. And as such it explains what is happening without any understanding of why.

Once you discard the presupposition of why it works (equal exchange of value makes it totes cool) you can discard the assumptions that are made based on them and you can look at actual facts (any kid will tell you, he wanted the Continental matchbox car more than he wanted his extra pocket knife)
Which is what marginal utility is explaining.

Okay, but how many diamonds in circulation were found for no effort vs. those requiring time and effort to mine? I suspect it's a low percentage.

I'm not sure why we're arguing such an obviously true statement as 'wealth is produced by labor.' A lazy society is not going to be a rich one.

All of DC is competing factions battling for power and grift, and the only thing they could agree on was working together to get Trump out because he was endangering the grift. 256 Nobody would ever have begun mining diamonds, if people had not stumbled over them lying on the ground in outwash from weathering kimberlites.

Okay, but how many diamonds in circulation were found for no effort vs. those requiring time and effort to mine? I suspect it's a low percentage.

I'm not sure why we're arguing such an obviously true statement as 'wealth is produced by labor.' A lazy society is not going to be a rich one.
Posted by: Methos at September 05, 2021 09:55 PM (kOpft)

Just pointing out that the urge to mine for diamonds, and other precious gems and metals, was started by people stumbling over loose stuff on the ground, or in a creek, recognizing its beauty, and hence value, and seeking to find more.

Back in my diamond growing days, it was reputed that the Mongols used to take a sheep carcass (or fleece, maybe) and drag it in the river. Diamonds, being hydrocarbon-based, clung to the fat of the carcass/fleece, allowing for easy collection. I have no idea if it's true, but it's a hell of a story.

273 "All wealth is the product of labor."

Posted by: Methos at September 05, 2021 09:23 PM (kOpft)

Add to that definition "labor that creates or adds value" and I am pretty fine with it, as a generalization.
Posted by: Iron Mike Golf at September 05, 2021 09:51 PM (8C7+r)

Labor produces wealth, but value is independent of labor. It seems paradoxical, yet it is. Wealth is material goods. You can produce a good for which there is no demand at all. It exists, it is a form of wealth, but it has no value, because value is subjective. Water is worth very little, and given away for nearly free, but a man dying of thirst would pay almost anything for a bottle of water.

Right. I guess I'm assuming using the term "wealth" generically implies that value. They used fleece for recovering placer gold, too. The tale of the Golden Fleece has a basis in fact.

And dragging a fleece in the river to recover X, is, in fact, mining. You might call it "artisanal mining", but it's an activity engaged in for the purpose of collecting something of value.

352 I dont disagree with that quote. Labor does create everything of value. But labor alone without capital and other resources would not produce shit.

Explain Bitcoin mining. Just plug it in and it makes highly coveted arrangements of binary numbers. Then there is the guy who tells the farmer what crops will produce the larger return, or the engineer who points out ways to be more efficient with labor. And the muscle whose presence provides a level of security to the laborer so that things could be made more efficiently and with far less loss.

There is the "fixer" who clears the impediments to making wealth so that it requires less labor for same value. The explorer who discovers valuable resources. The banker coordinates investors so that labor can have the tools necessary to produce greater wealth more efficiently.

Dittos with educators, insurers, physicians, etc. They all play a role in helping the laborer work smarter, healthier and able to take calculated risks - all working in tandem to generate more wealth.

380 Back in my diamond growing days, it was reputed that the Mongols used to take a sheep carcass (or fleece, maybe) and drag it in the river. Diamonds, being hydrocarbon-based, clung to the fat of the carcass/fleece, allowing for easy collection. I have no idea if it's true, but it's a hell of a story.

If you make it Anatolia, where the locals were doing a kind of placer mining in the Pactolus using sheep fleeces to capture gold dust, yes you are spot on.

It has been suggested by classics scholars that this was the basis for Jason's golden fleece.

GE has been doing it for decades. They make industrial diamonds in a factory. An engineer friend of mine used to work there. GE may have sold the process to someone else at this point, as the GE Superabrasives factory has closed.
10% less expensive? No, a lot cheaper than that. Any industrial saw or drill bit that has a diamond edge was made from industrial synthetic diamonds. These are not gemstone quality. They are hard, not beautiful.

Someone mined the materials and built those graphics cards. Someone built the power plant that supplies the electricity (and likely harvested whatever fuels it). Someone spent the time and intellectual effort to do the math that makes bitcoin possible.

Dittos with educators, insurers, physicians, etc. They all play a role in helping the laborer work smarter, healthier and able to take calculated risks - all working in tandem to generate more wealth.

I'm not sure what you're arguing here. Those are examples of other people whose labor was involved in producing the something. I don't think anyone here is suggesting value comes exclusively from labor, just that the end product thing wouldn't exist without time and effort among the inputs.

433 Also, it's not quite as simple as "Value is independent of labor." For example, My uncle built himself a house (because he was retired and bored and had a couple of sons in the area to help). If you walked up and offered him a million bucks right after he finished, I expect he'd have turned away the offer.

Value is ultimately negotiated between any pair of parties. And opportunity cost is still a thing, for example I might turn down a $10 an hour job because having free time is worth more to me (certainly my uncle would, which is kind of the meaning of retired) than the money you're offering.

So of course I ask her about it. She was great, very friendly and world-weary-funny. "Diamonds. About half a million dollars' worth. In Brussels a rep will come on board before we deplane and get them." (from memory, essentials are accurate)

Go 15 miles outside Chicago or Minneapolis and you start seeing homemade "abortion sucks" roadside posters that the farmers put up in their fields. the more work and prep you put into something the greater the result is. A lot of Austrians like talking about Robinson Crusoe, so he could bail water with his hands when he was thirsty, which is low-prep, high time preference and low efficiency, and would be a slow way to get water to his hut for washing or cooking. He could get half a cocoanut shell, he could build a bucket, he could arrange a dam and a diversion, he could build an aquaduct, or he could do all the things to make plumbing. If he had neighbors he could start a waterworks and have his neighbors pay him lots for running it.

All of these takes greater labor to create greater value in the end. That is the creation of wealth, not the labor itself, but the intentional labor to fill a need efficiently, with a greater return than the input

You are arguing against either "All labor produces wealth" or "All labor is of equal value" neither of which are logically equivalent to " Wealth was produced by labor."

I don't think anyone here is going to argue against the benefits of efficiency in production, though technically in the long term, it will make your product worth less (as someone else can mimic your efficiency and undercut your price if you haven't already reduced it). Which also means some reduction in the "wealth" you're producing if measured in a currency, though the people buying your products are seeing an improvement in their quality of life.

Still, using less labor doesn't change the fact that it's a required input.

Yesterday the shootin' match was, of course, east county. Hot as F. Though really nothing compared to humid parts of the country or world.

Guys (gun nutz, therefore dangerous right-wingers, natch) were lamenting San Diego, the last major metropolitan area in the west that was Not Insane*, slipping in that direction.

*The National Surrealist Party, a bunch of comics who lived in Santa Barbara - Firesign Theater guys - used to use "Not Insane" as their political "endorsement". I remember SB County local race brochures and posters with it back when I was there for a bit, long time ago.

It's a lot less than that. You can get a synthetic ("lab-grown" seems to be the euphemism) diamond for about $700/carat. A crap natural stone will be more like $2,000, and a natural stone of equivalent quality to the lab-grown one will be more like $15,000.

Less labor for a given amount of production = more wealth produced.

I just meant to comment on the difficulty in actually measuring wealth. I think most people would default to thinking of it in terms of net worth (which is skewed for the same reasons that GDP is a worthless measure), which was what I was getting at, when quality of life is more what's actually of value.

Most of them use microengraving, I think, because that can be seen with standard jeweler's magnifiers (loupes, microscopes, etc.)

While you can tell with x-rays and such, most jewelers don't have that equipment on hand.

Had a great gathering at her house afterward. Dozens of folks, family and friends, food and beverages and a multitude of old photos. Mom would have loved it.

Today Milady Jo and I drove back down to help (a little) and visit with my sisters who are going through the accumulated belongings of a long, long lifetime. Picked up some Indian food to take home. Good stuff.

Tomorrow, we are, theoretically, getting a new car to replace the poor old battered 2003 Nissan Quest. Things I hate: upgrading cells, upgrading computers, getting new cars. Pre-spyware vehicle, at least.

Then, Tuesday, the county insists I report for jury duty. "Masks required." Haven't worn a mask yet, due to "underlying conditions." Should be interesting.

524 Rodrigo, I think we are talking at cross purposes here. By prep I mean to include the labor that goes into the tools used to do the job as well. Labor involved in producing things can't exclude consideration of the tools and their manufacture and transportation as well.

If you are cutting hay or harvesting wheat the buyer and the wheat don't care how it is done, but the buyer would like the lowest cost possible. Generally to get the lowest price you have to have the highest production for the most efficient use of your time and labor, and that requires better tools which require more set up time to make.

Robinson Crusoe is used like the physicist talking about "spherical cows" since it tries to get rid of all the muddying parts, and he is using only his labor and his resources and using it on himself. In reality it takes thousands to make a combine harvester, and it makes it impossible to figure all the inputs from the time keeper at the smelter to the guy turning bolts

657 653 Hey Horde, Just finished watching an Alfred Hitchcock Hour with the hubs. Great episode, featuring a very young Ed Asner, RIP the commie prick. He was a good actor though, he actually played a more conservative fellow in a Hallmark Christmas movie. Anyway, what's going on tonight, I only started reading commentary at #600.

CommieWood was filled with commie bastards and still is. Grandpa on "The Waltons" was red through-and-through (and gay. What a combo).

658 South Carolina rich guy whose wife and son were found shot to death a few months ago (unsolved) was shot in the head while fixing a flat tire by the side of the road. You'd think he would be dead or severely injured, no? He has a superficial head wound.

Hinky.

I'm calling it now. He killed his family or had them killed. He shot himself to make it appear he's a target, making sure it was only a flesh wound. Stopped by the side of the road in his Mercedes, how conVEENient.

Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at September 06, 2021 01:31 AM (ynpvh)

668 Ok, here's my idea for a screenplay, "The Transaction."

Jason Momoa is a regular family guy, but he drives a Lambo and he's secretly gay on the side and he's whoring out on Grindr.

He hooks up with some "hot young dude" but it turns out he's getting catfished by Liam Neeson. He's like "no way, old man, leave me alone," but Liam gets obsessed with him, and goes all Fatal Attraction on him. Also, Liam drives a Porsche 911 GTS and he's a retired CIA agent.

Jason gets tired of Liam threatening his suburban white-picket-fence charade of a lifestyle, so he runs his Porsche off the Brooklyn Bridge in an andrenaline-pumping Michael Bay style chase scene. He thinks Liam's dead now, but he's totally not.

Liam uses his spycraft to fully transition into a comely hussy, both to disguise himself as he hunts Momoa, and to seduce the sexually confused husband and father. These motives become hopelessly entwined in a really artistic way.

In the end they fall in love and kill the wife together before living out their shared dream of fundraising for BLM, and you can also donate too with a QR code in the credits.
