Cyberpunk 2020: We Are Already Living in a Cyberpunk Technofascist Dystopia

A very accurate dark prophecy from Carl Sagan:

carlsagan.jfif

Of course, Sagan was a lefty and had the idea, as all lefties do, that it would be the Big Meany Rightists who did all these horrible things.

Rather than his lefty pals -- the ones who are always creating gulags and concentration camps.

As a wise man once said, "Fascism is forever descending upon America but landing in Europe."

And likewise: Fascism is always brewing on the right, yet coming to a boil on the left.

Fascinating thread by Aphilosophae here, which proves, by using real-world photographs, that we're not approaching a technofascist cyberpunk dystopia -- we're already in one.

cyberpunkdystopia.png />

The signs say: "UNLAWFUL GATHERINGS ARE NOT PERMITTED."

Blaring this warning to empty Omega Man streets.

This, I imagine, is a baptism while observing the Megagovernment's mandated six feet of social distancing.

Watching a live entertainment -- or a political speech? Is there any difference in a cyberpunk dystopia? -- while remaining isolated and safe in our Cars:

watchingaconcert.jfif

I don't even know what to say about this one:

elmo.jfif

More at the link.

The thread compiler, @Aphilosophae, concludes:

@APhilosophae

Sep 3

I'm not certain the world we knew is coming back. I am certain that the world we are living in has changed. We can do better than this, regardless of any differences we may hold. Neighbors don't treat neighbors like a bunch of warring factions living in a Huxleyan fever dream.

One more data point indicating we're living in a cyberpunk fascist dystopia:

A Walmart billionaire schemed to build his own designer "woke" city.

Former Walmart executive and e-commerce billionaire Marc Lore wants to build the world’s first woke city from scratch -- somewhere in the US.

Lore last week unveiled plans for his utopia, called Telosa, from the ancient Greek word Telos, meaning "highest purpose."

"The mission of Telosa is to create a more equitable, sustainable future. That's our North Star,” Lore said in a promotional video. "We are going to be the most open, the most fair and the most inclusive city in the world."

Key to the city's plans is Lore's economic vision, called "Equitism," in which the land upon which the city is built will be donated to a community endowment.

Residents, in turn, own their homes on the land and are enriched as home values increase, according to the project’s site, and after a period of "hyper-growth," residents can buy the land from the community endowment.

Another data point:

New "reality" TV show will have "activists" compete. The prize is getting a donation to your stupid gay-ass cause.

All of this crap is performative nonsense anyway; might as well get a performance out of it.

Usher, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Julianne Hough are set to co-host the Global Citizen competition series from CBS, The Activist. The five-week reality series premieres at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, on CBS and will be available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+.

The Activist is a competition series that features six inspiring activists teamed with three high-profile public figures working together to bring meaningful change to one of three vitally important world causes: health, education, and environment.

Activists go head-to-head in challenges to promote their causes, with their success measured via online engagement, social metrics, and hosts’ input. The three teams have one ultimate goal: to create impactful movements that amplify their message, drive action, and advance them to the G20 Summit in Rome, Italy. There, they will meet with world leaders in the hope of securing funding and awareness for their causes. The team that receives the largest commitment is celebrated as the overall winner at the finale, which will also feature musical performances by some of the world’s most passionate artists.

Even *more* dystopic than the mere fact of the event? Go look at the picture. Look carefully.

That event - of "political supporters" "rallying" in their cars for Porridge Brain - was sponsored. Every single vehicle is a Chrysler product, and they're all new. That "rally" pulled double-duty as a marketing op, while the megacorps that suckle at the government teat and subsist on the bitter fat of socialism throw their weight behind their preferred candidate.

54 Would old Carl say anything about black culture?

I mean, the cities are completely fucked, so horrifying as to be out of a sci-fi dystopia from any number of authors, with no relief in sight at all.

Philadelphia...goes from the founding of the coutnry, to a filthy hellhole. Was just there, there is garbage everywhere, and people with bad tats and bad attitudes. A sewer of a city. Baltimore, people graduate high school without knowing how to add or read. Literally, cant read, but graduated. I read that one student made it through four years of HS, but had to be sent back to the beginning to do it all over again...I guess that's good though?

But BLM right? What happened to all those riots, they just ended, with what...they toppled a statue on the head of one black man, ripping his face off and damaging his brain. No apologies, no assitance, a casualty.

But Trumpers! They are the problem!

Would old Carl have voted for the old racist pedo Taliban Joe, would he also have ignored Joe handing over tech to China by way of reinstating the Taliban...

Not that I recall. It was mostly describing mega-corps controlling a unresponsible government that lead to wide-spread crime and decay around pockets of super-tech and wealthy neo-aristocracy.

The only kind of social stuff was the sub-cultures and their weirdness like the Brady Bunch. The Brady Bunch 'gangs' all have surgically altered faces to look like characters in the TV show.

Yeah, it wasn't the best in terms of social predictions.

78 This, I imagine, is a baptism while observing the Megagovernment's mandated six feet of social distancing.

IIRC, the priest himself approved of that pic, saying he thought it was "cute."

If ever any prelate needed to be defrocked, excommunicated and burnt as a heresiarch, that asshole is one.

Know why i think they felt they had to do it? Stadiums full of people yelling "f*ck Biden", with the prospect of even more this weekend. They had to give the bad guys "cover" to declare no more assemblies, but I think its too late, and they don't dare.

92 Key to the city's plans is Lore's economic vision, called "Equitism," in which the land upon which the city is built will be donated to a community endowment.

Residents, in turn, own their homes on the land and are enriched as home values increase, according to the project's site, and after a period of "hyper-growth," residents can buy the land from the community endowment.

This may be the dumbest thing I heard today.

So you want me to build a house on property that I don't own with the hope that in the future I will be able to buy the property my house sits on? What happens if "the community" decides not to sell me the land? I have to move my house? What happens if the "period of hyper-growth" doesn't happen? What happens if "the community" goes bankrupt?

From what I see of today's youth they don't valorize ignorance, laziness, and failure as much as I remember them doing in the late 80s/90s. These kids have their own issues they're are all a little queer but they are more like Chinese kids and quite concerned about success in society.

215 Of course, Sagan was a lefty and had the idea, as all lefties do, that it would be the Big Meany Rightists who did all these horrible things.

One thing the left does to perfection is projection. All the time, with every breath they take. Just think of all the really spot on sci-fi movies of dystopian society, replace the evil Christian fundamentalists with government, and you got it. Of course, back then they were totally anti-corporation, so the ones that were an evil corporation taking over might have been accurate, they just didn't know how pro-corporation they'd become.

One thing Carl couldn't have predicted was social media boy did things snowball in the past 10 years or what? The only movie that pops into my head as being accurate *and* anti leftist is Demolition Man. Boy, did they nail the soy boy happy-joy-joy feelings thing or what?

My grandmother lived on an estate of the McVicker family ( my great grandfather was the grounds caretaker) in NY. Mr McVicker was a film actor though it was his wife with the money. They knew many famous actors and actresses and would have parties and put on plays at the Estate. My grandmother was around six of seven when she recalls that Marjorie Rambeau was at the house and requested she play the part of a butterfly in one of the plays .

That's it but I thought you would know who Marjorie Rambeau was.

They are using some of the catch - phrases and slogans of the Left to energize Stupid youth, who always want to latch onto Stupid Leftist Ideas because they are soooo Progressive. I learned this in college, 'cause I'm soooo smart!
You're not going to catch too many folks over 60 with "man the barricades for racial justice, and justice for LGBTq!"
It's all an ugly game to slip a harness on all of us, abolish freedom and turn the mob against this week's Emmanuel Goldstein. Donald Trump, Tucker Carlson, Alex Jones, the Unvaxxinated, and who knows who is next.
Even some people on the so-called left, like Tim Poole and Glenn Greenwald see this for what it is.

Heh. There was an episode of Stargate where there was this colony with the residents all hooked in to an internet (chip in brain sort of thing), so that they didn;t rely on memory, they tapped ino the servers for info. Something was killing residents, but the db would erase traces of these people, so that no one missed the people - they simply tapped into the db that said "no such person exists." I feel like that's where we are with the internet. It used to be a great knowledgebase, but now that people have become dependent on looking up things online these search engines, MSM, wikipedia, etc. can simply erase history, knowledge, a person;s work/blog, whatever and people forget.

Well, sort of. That is a very weird interpretation of the word. Telos really means "end" or "final." It is the root Teleology, which is a study (or explanation) of things in terms of their end purposes rather than root causes. Partly, this relates to the assessment of *intrinsic* purposes, as opposed to the useful purposes to which man might put something (extrinsic purposes).

It is fascinating that they're calling it this, because it is a study of ends and finality (itself a major cornerstone of socialist theory - the end of history and the end of man as he replaced by the New Socialist Man) as well as a study of intrinsic purposes regardless of man's extrinsic uses.

It's hard to come up with a more dehumanizing name and root word, and it makes me wonder if it was intentional as opposed to ignorant.

297 Sagan was literally a crank. The first experiment provided evidence against his "Nuclear Winter" theory, and he blamed the people doing the experiments.

All of his crap about how "Science adapts" and all he did was hold fast to his un-tested assumptions about how the world would react.

Einstein was never accepted by his seniors. His juniors accepted his theories, until Einstein himself became a crank about Quantum Mechanics.

Most people don't know that when Einstein said that "God doesn't play dice with the universe", it was a tautology and a circular assertion. He didn't believe in God, there was no other person to whom Einstein was attributing this quality, but the *orderly* universe itself.

326 Also, there is no reason to think that a physical dice throw is random. Too many factors to anticipate is not "random".

However, when we get too many factors to anticipate, we often model the probability as random.

Thus random is a mathematical model and not necessary as an occurrence in the world. It's (almost) a confusion of terms. After all, dice rolls happen in Einstein's orderly universe, right?

So, does or does God not "play dice" with the universe?

327 Bladerunner!! Flying cars and sex bots!!

One of the things that really stands out when I read older science fiction dystopias, is how incredibly optimistic they are. Sure, you’re living in a totalitarian hellhole, but you’ve got flying cars, robots, space travel…

They didn’t get that real innovation only occurs when people aren’t scared to innovate. When every new idea runs the risk of accidentally invoking an arcane militarized bureaucracy or a woke lynching, innovation tends to slow down.

371 >>> 283 Lore last week unveiled plans for his utopia, called Telosa, from the ancient Greek word Telos, meaning "highest purpose."
++++

Our society used to be strong enough that it could tolerate some isolated, limited perversion. As long as that shit was confined to Greenwich Village and Haight-Ashbury,, we could could look the other way. Live and let live in

But now our culture is soaked with gay jizz everywhere. Every major institution has been pozzed with GRID.

It needs to stop. The gay shit has gotten out of control and we can't have media and culture and politics centered on nice hetero families. Enough. Gay is an insult. Use it.

Maybe, if you're thinking about Schismatrix by Bruce Sterling. Society has basically split in Shapers and Mechanists. The latter being highly technology oriented and the former being more or less emotional savants.

And the latter was deliberate. In the comic book the ruling government came from the left, and the people didn’t need to be tricked into choosing it. Just a disaster outside their control, some riots, and the left turned against everyone and everything they claimed to have stood for.

The writers ended up having to neuter V’s on-air speech because of the changes they made.

The post-WW2 world is gone--and with it all of it's prosperity, optimism and sense of purpose.
It had a good run. Posted by: Zombie Thomas More at September 10, 2021 04:18 PM (mR6Gs)

The Post-WW2 world was a fiat money world, with the pretense initially of convertibility of currencies to Gold only at the level of governments. The pretense of convertibility ended with Nixon's closure of Bretton-Wood system, and we are now dealing with global fiat currencies that are about to collapse as well.

Fiat creates a high time preference (due to systemic inflation) and disincentivizes any savings for the same reason.

With any view of the past, the collapse will be in two stages, first a period of serious inflation with an attempt to revalue the fiat currency with a new currency (with a haircut like in Crete, new currency like in Argentina or Germany, or repudiation of notes like State banks in the US in the 18th century or Republican France) and followed up with a real development of a hard currency (gold standard under Napoleon, Peru and El Salvador using US dollars, pegging the currency to harder currency with rules about keeping it there, like Argentina)

If his fear of the dystopian future was genuine, then at best it can be said he had blinders on. He never saw, assuming he was sincere, that the evil was coming from his leftist friends.

I wonder if he was alive today -- like David Horowitz, would he see what he couldn't see now? Would he believe in justice and truth enough to stand up against the woke warriors?

I like to think he would be I have little faith he would.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor

I think it was Heinlein's idea of a practical society and government that would work. It was not ideal. He even says as much through a couple of his characters in the book.
The people that could vote and hold office were "veterans" of Federal service. And it was all voluntary. The ethos was that at some time in their lives, they had put the needs of "society" ahead of their own, and thus had skin in the game as far as preserving civilization.
As this was written in 1959, he also had some harsh words for what happened to the North American Republic, known as the United States. Where citizens lost track of their duties as citizens, while seeking every gimmee they could get.
People are still people.

470 > No no, that's exactly what it is, and it's OK. You just have to realize that it has nothing to do with a novel that happens to share the name and nothing else.

If that's exactly what it is, I don't get the love for it.

471 Alan Moore did not write that as coming from the left, it was yet another one of his angry screeds against Margaret Thatcher.

His intro to the book was. But the book explicitly states that Labour had got back into power.

472 >>Yep. Followed closely by Equilibrium.

I was thinking the same thing -- maybe because of how the current government destroys all artifacts of the past that brought joy (or any extreme emotion) - literature, music, art, snuggly puppies. . . The enemy is emotion, and that's akin to the woke's obsession with not being "offended."

Or maybe it's the cool martial arts?

473 Noir is a bit like poetry. Trying to define it is....slippery. And fun.

There's the visual aspect, taken from German Expressionism.

There's the femme fatale who leads the protagonist astray.

There's doom and cruelty, noir is never nice.

There's an ambitious quality to everyone and everything, a tinge, a taint.

Ace in the Hole is a Noir. So is The Strange Loves of Martha Ivers. Notorious is more of spy movie, I wouldn't call any of them crime movies. Though some of the best known noir are indeed crime stories as well.

That and the punishment for people was death by fire. Which is weird.

476 It's like the movie, The Man in the White Castle that some were raving about.
The communists were the heroes.

If you quit where what's her name meets "TMitHC", then essentially you have the book as written, more or less.

I stopped watching after that. The communists as heroes is just something some group of Hollywood Dildoes came up with.

Also the government losing all validity due to abandoning huge numbers of soldiers in retreating from a lost war, without any attempt to recover them

478 Nothing says that reality TVc series is more shit than Chopra being on it, as she's known to be a horrible piece of shit to all the people she sees as underlings on her shows, and she should have been shamed out if this country years ago.

480 So this other activist chick married a Jonas? I hadn't heard anything from her since her absolutely laughable woke Fibbie show "Quantico" for Disney/ABC.

Maybe she can use some of that klout to find out what happened to fellow actress-activist-whatever Zhao Wei
