Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Grampa Funnyfinger's Exotic Timepiece Cafe: Cloudy With a Chance of Labradoodle EditionRunt lamb, bullied by bigger siblings and rejected by his mother, is adopted by people and eventually becomes a leader of other orphaned lambs. A shepherd's puppy goes out for his first day of work. His instincts to start bossing around sheep kick in immediately. Friendly stray cat makes himself adoptable. Cat hugs dog to stop him from howling. I don't know if the cat was trying to comfort the dog, or if he was just annoyed by the yowls. Teaching a cat a quick coin trick. In case you missed it: Cat wants you to know he is available to receive treats. Let's get him, guys! Guinea pigs chowing down. This dog is a big fan of Roadhouse. Freaky: juggled balls as seen from above. They look like they're just floating. Just a seal washing up on the beach, barking at a dog on the sand, who is also barking at the seal.Inman: Real life superhero brawl. The superheroes get rekt. Criminal attacks bus driver, and then discovers the bus driver knows how to defend himself. Store owner counter-attacks criminal with a wine bottle. I've never seen someone smashed in the head with a bottle before. Not for real. Kumala's charm offensive. This is not Inman, but the inevitable Inman playcall on this combination of lane-merging and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu will be great.

Hey, gang. I've been Empire1 on line for a lot of years, mostly to avoid being mistaken for a rock star of a birth same name, she and I share, and being mobbed by her fans. I think I'm well enough known here, I think I'll go back to my real name, at least on the HQ, though with a formerly known as to avoid some confusion in my sig. A few of you, those I've corresponded with, know it anyway, and given our current surveillance culture, so does Bob an NSA. (Waves to Bob) This is the thread I've been most active on of late, so the announcement is repeated here. I've found some nice and affordable First Communion rosary centerpieces at Amazon, so if anyone wants a rosary with one of those, let me know. Also, I'll be finishing the last of my earlier requests after today's mail arrives (to go out in tomorrow's), so if you want one, now's the time to ask! Kind of interesting that Woke ESPN is not outgageously outraged over the Patriots dumping Cam Newton for Mac Jones, the (white) rookie. I kind of have a feeling they'd normally be running around with their hair on fire.
Buuut...Newton's an anti-vaxxer, and that seems to trump the race card. Woke ESPN keeps relentlessly hammering that nobody wants Newton because anti-vaxxer. It's his own fault, you see. So, best I can tell, vax status now trumps race among the Woke. It's hard to keep up with them. Posted by: Guy Smiley at August 31, 2021 07:02 PM (Bmy3R) 121

MoronRobbie, think you're right - a quick web search with images reveals that small clubs very much like mine are called billy clubs. Mine has the leather lanyard wrapped around it just above the handle area, like the ones I've found. And several of them were described as billy clubs from police and private businesses in the 1920s/30s. So, a good match.
I keep it in the handy yet very concealed location with the bedside gun. The nightstick's out in the office next to the printer. The aluminum baseball bat (bought used for $15 at a sporting goods store) is in the garage next to the reloading/work bench. I think many people forget about intermediate tools like these for the unlikely defense/trouble scenarios around the house. Many advantages in some situations. I think blackjacks are mostly considered to be leather, with weighted ends, jointed - also called saps. Billy club, truncheon for these small wooden weighted clubs. All those I found online that were like mine were labeled billy clubs. It's a cool bit of history, though the history will remain lost. Pretty sure there was a cop in the extended family. "Ethnicity" was the same as gave rise to the term "paddy wagon", so, cop in the family pretty likely. fun fact: Pistols and swords were banned in most european cities in the 18th and 19th centuries, as were most other weapons. But people carried knives, because a knife could just be a tool, and also walking sticks, because, obviously, they're clubs in disguise.
That may explain the popularity of metal shodding on the grip of walking sticks. Clubs opened up teaching the martial art of stick-fighting. The french form of it is called, I think, "Le Canne," for obvious reasons. Posted by: ace at August 31, 2021 07:18 PM (0G13K) 220

Billy club or truncheon: short, weighted club. Usually by lead inserted into the end, sometimes capped back with wood.
Blackjack: short cylinder of woven with spring in the handle and lead weight in the end. Striking end is usually wrapped rather than woven. Sap: short, flat club made of leather with lead in the striking end. Theoretically less permanently damaging than a blackjack because of the larger striking area. Almost never has a spring in the handle. Palm sap: circular slug of lead wrapped in leather, with a strap that fits around the hand. Meant to be held in the palm, concealed and then used open-handed. Shillelagh: short walking stick from Ireland. I believe they're made of blackthorn usually and have a large knob for a handle. Doubles as a club. Nightstick: police baton. Can cover anything from the newer ones with the side handle or the old-time 34"+ straight sticks. I believe originally nightsticks were only long ones and differentiated from truncheons by size. I think they weren't typically weighted either. Posted by: sigma d00d at August 31, 2021 07:20 PM (hjVwb) 230

My dad was a cop for many years, and one item I inherited from his kit is a slapjack. Thirteen years ago, Afghan interpreter Mohammed helped rescue then-Sen. Joe Biden and two other senators stranded in a remote Afghanistan valley after their helicopter was forced to land in a snowstorm. Now, Mohammed is asking President Biden to save him.
"Hello Mr. President: Save me and my family," Mohammed, who asked not to use his full name while in hiding, told The Wall Street Journal as the last Americans flew out of Kabul on Monday. "Don't forget me here." Mohammed, his wife, and their four children are hiding from the Taliban after his yearslong attempt to get out of Afghanistan got tangled in the bureaucracy. They are among countless Afghan allies who were left behind when the U.S. ended its 20-year military campaign in Afghanistan on Monday. Mohammed was a 36-year-old interpreter for the U.S. Army in 2008 when two U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopters made an emergency landing in Afghanistan during a blinding snowstorm, according to Army veterans who worked with him at the time. On board were three U.S. senators: Mr. Biden, the Delaware Democrat, John Kerry, (D., Mass.) and Chuck Hagel, (R., Neb.). Posted by: andycanuck (UHVv4) at August 31, 2021 07:28 PM (UHVv4) 275

As ace mentioned, they do, or did, make shot-weighted gloves. An alternative to brass knuckles I guess. And there's a shotcap, weighted baseball cap. Lead dust? in the back. The idea is that you grab the bill and smack the target. Saw both of them in a Shomer-Tec catalog, over 20 years ago. When I was a wee lad, of course. Every culture seems to have its preferred style of impact weapons. Some of the design differences are a result of the materials at hand, as well as use cases. For example, in Africa, they have a sjambok (sp?) that's made of rhino hide, I believe. It's long, like a walking stick, but flexible. I don't think it works well as a support, it's more of a whip, but stiffer. Supposedly very painful to be hit with. Cold Steel makes a synthetic one. No idea how it compares to the original. Funny about the merging discussion. When things are very slow/stopped, I've derived probably outsized pleasure and reassurance that people usually "zipper" very politely. Reaction is partly due to the simply terrifying lack of competence, awareness, skill, or consideration of enough drivers (majority? not sure) these days. CalTrans effed up the freeway entrance closest to me somehow, it is now a fairly scary merge, where if the person going straight (also on an on-ramp) doesn't notice/accommodate the merger coming down a slight curving hill, it's disaster (merger has nowhere to go, they put up barriers). Nothing says "love tap" like a good pair of Sapp-Gloves.
Leather gloves with #12 lead shot sewn into "pads" across knuckles, the knife-edge (karate chop) of the hand, and the heel of the hand. Try on a pair of those, make a fist, and now you have hands of steel. But while retaining full dexterity so as to properly wield your billy club, knout, cudgel, baton, shileleigh, hillbilly whacker or whatever other instrument of persuasion you might so favor. Oh, and Sapp-Gloves don't tend to call attention to themselves as a weapon, until used. Then you'll have that assholes (a) full attention, or (b) no remaining attention, at all. I do what AOP talks about at all times, in fact I avoid the slow lane in many situations only because I don't want to deal with merging traffic. But if I'm in the lane I often accommodate the merger, simply, by either speeding up a bit/slowing down a bit. It ain't rocket science. Good merging drivers will match your general speed, but it's easy to anticipate and just leave clear concrete for the other guy.
But since we're talking traffic pet-peeves, how about the seemingly unconscious thing where people accelerate to match your speed when ..... you're trying to pass them and then get over? On 2-lane highways it is of course the worst. But it happens all the time. As someone I know can testify, I have been known to scream "drive one f***ing speed, not 7 different speeds in 2 miles!". New-ish cars - no cruise control? The worst time evah was on I-66, west out of Rosslyn in NoVa. Probably heading out to a hockey game. Guy in right lane's going under the (then, but rarely observed) 55MPH limit. So I get in the other lane to pass. He went from low 50s to nearly 80MPH as I tried to pass, and he wasn't paying attention to me, wasn't deliberate. Jeebus. Withdraw our military prior to getting all of our civilians out and instead send in unarmed diplomats to "work out ways to extract those abandoned by Biden". *** This is related to the brake lights point, too. There are a lot of fast drivers who don't understand that they're generally the ones causing the backups by making other traffic tap the brakes because often they're driving in a fairly unpredictable manner. For example someone zips up to slower traffic and tailgates, and the driver next to and slightly behind the tailgater isn't sure if he's going to jump into the right lane to pass so he covers the brake pedal, then when the tailgater DOES cut over the brake lights come on and ripples behind the tailgater. GnuBreed - jawbone of an ass is unusual because it's very narrow at the chin. You end up with two sorta boomerang looking pieces. There's a smooth section between the incisors and the molars, for a grip. I don't know if they were usually broken apart into two pieces or used as a single unit. I think they were used with the jaw-joint inward, so you'd strike with the blade-like lower jaw rather than the ball that fits into the skull sockets.

This is related to the brake lights point, too. It is not even a macho thing, but you approach someone doing 70 on cruise control. You blink to pass them and get into the left lane. They speed up because they did not realize they were going slower than the speed limit (or flow of traffic) so they speed up. Now, if you are in a fast car, you can pass them no problem, but you may get eyeballed by the police and 'I was doing 90 to pass the guy who sped up' is not a great excuse. So, stay with cruise and merge back in behind them as they speed up? Speed up? Slow down? Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at August 31, 2021 08:14 PM (z4k8L) 480

The cat-o-nine has nine strands because it was made from rope. You unlay the 3-strand braid and each strand is made of 3 smaller strands. Nine in total. While they certainly could be weighted, at the very least the ends were knotted so they wouldn't unlay further. It was used as punishment aboard ships, hence: rum, sodomy, and the lash.

As for changing to the left lane for a turn at the last moment ... nope. I just discovered that there are videos of people with expensive (and sometimes not so) boats trying to exit and enter channels with lots of rough water. It's neat because the obvious "holy cow, what was he thinking?" moments, but also that there's a group of people that are just like us car guys and airplane guys except with boats. The videos will all have the boats named and the engine size listed, and if they can't identify one they'll request it in the comments.
Wavy Boats is one I've been watching, but there are others. Not my world but kind of interesting to see dummies swamp their boats or throw their passengers out, as well as other folks coming in just as smooth as can be. Re: the "choice" gambit...this is more and more a common way of thinking amongst what I think of as the modern managerial (smiley face fascist) class. They want to wield power and crush people like the fascists of old, but they also want to believe they are "nice". So they set up punishments if you don't follow their directives, which usually don't have much purpose beyond making you jump, and if the punishments are applied, well, it was your fault wasn't it? You brought it on yourself. Those were The Rules and you chose not to follow them. Tsk tsk

572 When the reports trickle in on the mass rapes of American women..."But they wanted it."
They CHOSE it - that'll be the magic phrase. I'm seeing it already: vaccine passports that will ban people from riding buses or going into venues - "Well, by not vaccinating, they CHOSE that treatment." I remember once some moron refusing to agree that it was barbaric for able-bodied young people to lounge on bus seats while a heavily pregnant woman had to stand in the aisle. "She got pregnant, so she CHOSE the consequences." I guess those Jews who didn't leave Germany before 1939 chose what happened to them, too, right? ===== I do believe you're right, since blaming the victim is all the rage in D.C. these past two weeks. "Why, those NGO members in the southwest corner of the country could have gotten across three provinces, two fighting zones, and all the unpaved roads to Kabul if they really wanted to!! They CHOSE not to try to reach us until it was too late!" Posted by: exdem13 at August 31, 2021 08:57 PM (W+kMI) 620
