Criminal attacks bus driver, and then discovers the bus driver knows how to defend himself. Store owner counter-attacks criminal with a wine bottle. I've never seen someone smashed in the head with a bottle before. Not for real. Kumala's charm offensive. This is not Inman, but the inevitable Inman playcall on this combination of lane-merging and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu will be great.

That's a line about the group of musicians in the area, but there was a Swampers bar at one time. I'm not sure if it's still operating. Honestly, the Wagon Wheel in next-door Sheffield is the best of that type of bar in the area.
And the absolute best I've ever been in was the Chicken Shack outside of Huntsville. A (ahem) private club where you signed a fake name to get in and you could drink and dance to the ZZ Top cover band until 7am if you wanted to.

I keep it in the handy yet very concealed location with the bedside gun. The nightstick's out in the office next to the printer. The aluminum baseball bat (bought used for $15 at a sporting goods store) is in the garage next to the reloading/work bench. I think many people forget about intermediate tools like these for the unlikely defense/trouble scenarios around the house. Many advantages in some situations.

I think blackjacks are mostly considered to be leather, with weighted ends, jointed - also called saps.
Billy club, truncheon for these small wooden weighted clubs. All those I found online that were like mine were labeled billy clubs. It's a cool bit of history, though the history will remain lost. Pretty sure there was a cop in the extended family. "Ethnicity" was the same as gave rise to the term "paddy wagon", so, cop in the family pretty likely.

In martial arts those are called tonfas. Essentially a wooden baton with a knob about 6 inches from the end. It is a versatile weapon.

Blackjack: short cylinder of woven with spring in the handle and lead weight in the end. Striking end is usually wrapped rather than woven.
Sap: short, flat club made of leather with lead in the striking end. Theoretically less permanently damaging than a blackjack because of the larger striking area. Almost never has a spring in the handle.
Palm sap: circular slug of lead wrapped in leather, with a strap that fits around the hand. Meant to be held in the palm, concealed and then used open-handed.
Shillelagh: short walking stick from Ireland. I believe they're made of blackthorn usually and have a large knob for a handle. Doubles as a club.
Nightstick: police baton. Can cover anything from the newer ones with the side handle or the old-time 34"+ straight sticks. I believe originally nightsticks were only long ones and differentiated from truncheons by size. I think they weren't typically weighted either.

My dad was a cop for many years, and one item I inherited from his kit is a slapjack. Black leather, about 10" long (this is already going to go wrong as a description, I can just tell), with spring steel running inside the leather, and a leaded bulge at the end.
Oh, and a handy belt clip too. Ow.

Looking over auctioned "antique" billy clubs, mine's much nicer than almost all of them. Very nice wood, very nicely turned, and the plug in the end concealing the slug of lead is beautifully done, you have to look close to even see it.

ASPs are illegal in Michigan, but legal in Texas (CCW doesn't apply to them in either state). Lockpicks, though, legal in MI but illegal in TX unless you're a licensed locksmith.
Anyway, I need to look into getting a locksmith permit and an ASP.

As ace mentioned, they do, or did, make shot-weighted gloves. An alternative to brass knuckles I guess. And there's a shotcap, weighted baseball cap. Lead dust? in the back. The idea is that you grab the bill and smack the target. Saw both of them in a Shomer-Tec catalog, over 20 years ago. When I was a wee lad, of course.
Every culture seems to have its preferred style of impact weapons. Some of the design differences are a result of the materials at hand, as well as use cases. For example, in Africa, they have a sjambok (sp?) that's made of rhino hide, I believe. It's long, like a walking stick, but flexible. I don't think it works well as a support, it's more of a whip, but stiffer. Supposedly very painful to be hit with. Cold Steel makes a synthetic one. No idea how it compares to the original.

Funny about the merging discussion. When things are very slow/stopped, I've derived probably outsized pleasure and reassurance that people usually "zipper" very politely. Reaction is partly due to the simply terrifying lack of competence, awareness, skill, or consideration of enough drivers (majority? not sure) these days.
CalTrans effed up the freeway entrance closest to me somehow, it is now a fairly scary merge, where if the person going straight (also on an on-ramp) doesn't notice/accommodate the merger coming down a slight curving hill, it's disaster (merger has nowhere to go, they put up barriers). Well done, geniuses!

You will note I said, "when safe to do so". If it's rush hour, and all six lanes are bumper-to-bumper, then it's not safe. If it's slack travel time, then such a maneuver is perfectly safe, and actually enhances the flow of traffic.

When I got my license in 1976, the manual stated that the driver already on the freeway shares responsibility for getting the entering driver on the freeway safely. *Shares responsibility*, now, not "is solely responsible." Of course you wouldn't switch lanes when it's not feasible or safe, but you might have to slow down a bit, or even speed up to make sure the entering driver can fall in behind you.
Again, that was in the 70s. God knows what they teach now.

Reminds me of the NYS Thruway when I lived there, anytime approaching toll booths (and "approaching a toll booth" on the Thruway meant "within 5 miles of"!) Even with EZ-Pass, you were still going to see all those same idiots who were just zig-zagging all over the place a few minutes ago, all bottlenecked up at the tolls.

But since we're talking traffic pet-peeves, how about the seemingly unconscious thing where people accelerate to match your speed when ..... you're trying to pass them and then get over? On 2-lane highways it is of course the worst. But it happens all the time.
As someone I know can testify, I have been known to scream "drive one f***ing speed, not 7 different speeds in 2 miles!". New-ish cars - no cruise control?
The worst time evah was on I-66, west out of Rosslyn in NoVa. Probably heading out to a hockey game. Guy in right lane's going under the (then, but rarely observed) 55MPH limit. So I get in the other lane to pass. He went from low 50s to nearly 80MPH as I tried to pass, and he wasn't paying attention to me, wasn't deliberate. Jeebus.

There really should hardly ever be stop-and-go traffic on big highways, if you think about it.
Theoretically, the fast lane/passing lane should be going full speed. Because eventually you get to a point a few miles up the road and the highway is wide open again. But enough people are driving like Slowpokes causing the heavy traffic to slow way, way down for everyone else.

And bikers and joggers will often do the same thing. That's a weird quirk of human nature. With a lot of car-related misbehavior, I blame the misbegotten sense of safety brought by the steel and glass enclosure.
But there's no such "protection" on a trail or path. Granted it's not as rampant as in cars, but as a frequenter of hike-n-bike trails, I see it quite a bit.

I'd seen someone propose an invention that would encourage people to speed up to 5mph, 10mph, etc. together so that the bulk of traffic would all start moving pretty much simultaneously.
Good idea but impossible without automation. Just think of how far back the ripple effect of one car putting the brake lights on goes back in the traffic behind him.

There is a 'crystallization' event like happens in a supersaturated liquid when dense traffic is moving at above 30 or so mph. One disturbance causes a wave of increased density that requires cars to move even slower or even stop. Once the density rises that high, it takes quite a ways for people to trust the flow again.

When I pass someone I don't give them the opportunity. I f they're going 60 , I pass at 75 and slow down to 69.99 when I'm well ahead of them. I don't pass very often. I'm in no hurry to get anywhere.

On side streets in Chicago, some idiot would always go to the right turn lane, then race the next lane to cut ahead before they piled into parked cars on that lane after the intersection. If they failed, they lost about 50 spots before someone let them in.
Next intersection, it would be someone else. I quit letting them into first very quickly.

What I hate are the people ahead of me in the slow lane, who pull out to pass the person in front of THEM, and then just sort of hang there, without actually doing the passing. It's as if their stock of courage has been exhausted by pulling out into the fast lane, and they can't do any more. That leaves everyone stuck doing the same slow speed. I suspect those people just want to drive with a completely clear highway in front of them.

I heard that. Cincinnati, Dayton, Toledo, Detroit, Columbus, Cleveland, Louisville, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Wheeling... And Chicago, which has its special variety of stupid highway layout, and stupid people to drive on it. All of them have some on & off ramps through town on the highways which are inadequate for the task, poorly sited, or both. All of them randomly add and remove lanes. All of them have corrupt road "maintenance" contracts that make the Orange Barrel bloom and further reduce speed and maneuvering room. And there has to be that one low-dip portion near the downtown section which turns to swamp off road driving when it rains heavily.

Part of it is a reliance on cruise control vs people not using cruise.
It is not even a macho thing, but you approach someone doing 70 on cruise control. You blink to pass them and get into the left lane. They speed up because they did not realize they were going slower than the speed limit (or flow of traffic) so they speed up. Now, if you are in a fast car, you can pass them no problem, but you may get eyeballed by the police and 'I was doing 90 to pass the guy who sped up' is not a great excuse. So, stay with cruise and merge back in behind them as they speed up? Speed up? Slow down?

Also, simply striking with your fist whilst holding a baton makes one's fist like a brick -- just like holding a roll of quarters.

I don't have issues with someone being slower than I like if they are predictable. I'll slow and match or look to get around when I can. Its unpredictability that is the mind-killer. To do well in high traffic, you need to project where everyone will be until you glance at them next.

As for changing to the left lane for a turn at the last moment ... nope. A stroke several years ago left me with no left-side peripheral vision, so yeah, I'll get in that lane when I'm sure it's clear, and stay there till my turn-off. So while I can understand impatient drivers, I'm more concerned with my safety than with them wanting to save a few seconds.

Generally they will speed up for the next person who tried to pass so you can wait for that. They will eventually slow down as the other car passes them and that is a good time to pass. If you can't wait for a nice open spot to punch past.

Some years back I was at a stop light. A car ran a red light and almost hit a cop making a left turn. I was amazed at the save that guy made. I happened to run into the cop a week later at the grocery store and went out of my way to tell him what a good save it was. Scary as shit.

Hi, Nurse! Yep, both Wolf and Chekov are here. Wolf slid out of his carrier and adjusted to the new circumstances in an hour. Chekov, the older cat, threw up a little in his carrier during the trip, and rolledi n it -- hardly his fault. So we bathed him in the hotel sink. He behaved fine for that. But now he's slid between the wall and the head of the bed and is hiding the way he did when he first came to live with me. I suppose he'll come out sooner or later.
