Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Hurricane Ida Batters Louisiana, Leaving New Orleans Without PowerSome rough days (hopefully not too many more) for our Louisiana morons. Rescuers set out in hundreds of boats and helicopters to reach people trapped by floodwaters and utility crews mobilized Monday after a furious Hurricane Ida swamped the Louisiana coast and made a shambles of the electrical grid in the sticky, late-summer heat. One of the most powerful hurricanes ever to hit the U.S. mainland weakened into a tropical storm overnight as it pushed inland over Mississippi with torrential rain and shrieking winds, its danger far from over. Ida was blamed for at least one death -- someone hit by a falling tree outside Baton Rouge. But with many roads impassable and cellphone service knocked out in places, the full extent of its fury was still coming into focus.Unfortunately they expect to find that more people died during the storm. ... The governor's office said damage to the power grid appeared "catastrophic." And officials warned it could be weeks before power is fully restored.Weeks. Egad. Winds reached speeds of 105 mph. Below, a roof blown off of a building, which then landed on a traffic light structure. Below, a historic music store -- literally blown down by the force of the hurricane.

I'm finding a lot of a suspicious things about how this storm was reported.
For example, to determine the category of a hurricane, winds need to be measured at 20 feet off the ground, which is how it was always done. Instead, the NOAA planes flying over the storm dropped instruments to measure the winds at TEN THOUSAND FEET, where the winds are always much stronger, then apparently reported that as the official number. WTF? So it's wholly possible for a hurricane to be category 4 at 10,000 feet up, but a category 1 at 20 feet, which is where it should realistically be assessed. So far this storm's winds hew more closely to a category 1 than a 4. Posted by: The Maskless Ranger at August 30, 2021 03:19 PM (hQVBP) 122

Winds reached speeds of 105 mph. Below, a roof blown off of a building, which then landed on a traffic light structure.
It made landfall at 150 mph, a strong Cat 4 -- Cat 5 starts at 157 mph sustained winds. One reason it's gonna take time to restore power to NO is one of those huge metal transmission towers collapsed. A new one will have to be erected first, I think. In a way, LA got a small bit of luck in that the eye path went midway between Baton Rouge and NO, so it wasn't a direct hit on either city. So it's wholly possible for a hurricane to be category 4 at 10,000 feet up, but a category 1 at 20 feet, which is where it should realistically be assessed. I believe they use the 10000 foot readings to estimate the ground level winds. For instance 120 knot winds at 10000 feet might indicate 100 knot winds at the surface. Ultimately, you need to rely on the anemometer near the surface. Problem is, they sometimes go out with higher wind gusts. Posted by: Tofer732 at August 30, 2021 03:25 PM (kUGet) 153

I think they drop instruments which then measure the profile all the way down as they fall. How? I have no idea. If they drop it, it will move with the wind, but maybe they use GPS or inertia to figure out how fast it is moving. Anyway, a profile like that would be a lot more accurate at determining accurate wind speed. If that is how they do it. Back in 2008, Hurricane Ike was the best thing to happen to Galveston Island since the WWII buildup of the shipbuilding industry.
Ike destroyed nearly every substandard structure, demolished all of the "projects", or caused what projects which remained to be condemned. Hood rats evacuated inland, as there were no more crackhouses or backyard shacks left in which to hide. Crime rates plummeted to near-zero for the next two or three years, but have crept back up as development and expansion returns. And of course, they've rebuilt some "projects", but you'd best be a high-earning ethnic professional to afford to live there, OR a high-earning SSI, Medicare and every other Federal Grift recipient from the Protected Classes. They've priced the hood rats right out of Projects 2.0 They need a series of CATegory D-11s in New Orleans. A Caterpillar D-11 can clear a LOT of derelict structures in seemingly no time at all. They've been laying groundwork for this for ages. Psucky has been repeating the line, "Everyone who wants to get out" over and over like a broken Furby. Other Biden spokesholes have been repeating the line that Americans have been warned since April they needed to get out. I want you to notice something that's deliberate. Every time the Pentagon spoke about us smoking some booger eater outside HKIA, they talked about our "over the horizon" capabilities. That's meant to be a substitute for us leaving Bagram and a subtle way to say we still have strike capabilities in the region. We largely don't. We also don't have SAR for any manned aircraft we may fly in-country. We also don't have a QRF to take out smellies on the ground in any fast, meaningful way. So expect a few more drones strike to show our "over the horizon" capabilities. You know, to justify surrendering Bagram to the enemy. Oh yeah, I bet the Tolly Bon are scared too. And this is gonna keep happening in NOLA.
Alongside the Bourbon Street area is a wall and from the top of that wall (there are steps up) you can see the Mississippi River and it's only a few feet from the top of that wall. Bourbon street is BELOW the level of the river. So it's going to always flood when a storm comes thru and pushes the gulf water up the river and rises 3-10 feet. It's not a disaster. A disaster is something that no one thought would happen. The people know it's going to happen. They have done little to abate the danger or the outcome when it does. This includes the Corps of Engineers, the mayor of NOLA, the Governor of LA and departments of the FedGov. Cure: Move the city/raise the wall.
