Hurricane Ida Batters Louisiana, Leaving New Orleans Without Power
Some rough days (hopefully not too many more) for our Louisiana morons.
Rescuers set out in hundreds of boats and helicopters to reach people trapped by floodwaters and utility crews mobilized Monday after a furious Hurricane Ida swamped the Louisiana coast and made a shambles of the electrical grid in the sticky, late-summer heat. One of the most powerful hurricanes ever to hit the U.S. mainland weakened into a tropical storm overnight as it pushed inland over Mississippi with torrential rain and shrieking winds, its danger far from over. Ida was blamed for at least one death -- someone hit by a falling tree outside Baton Rouge. But with many roads impassable and cellphone service knocked out in places, the full extent of its fury was still coming into focus.Unfortunately they expect to find that more people died during the storm.
... The governor's office said damage to the power grid appeared "catastrophic." And officials warned it could be weeks before power is fully restored.Weeks. Egad.
Winds reached speeds of 105 mph. Below, a roof blown off of a building, which then landed on a traffic light structure.
"For the most part, all of our levees performed extremely well -- especially the federal levees -- but at the end of the day, the storm surge, the rain, the wind all had devastating impacts," Edwards said. "We have tremendous damage to homes and to businesses."

That was more money can go into local governments through increased economic activity, and then the local populace can influence their local governments to prepare for somewhat predictable events like hurricanes hitting the southeastern United States?

My brother was down there several times as part of State Farm's Disaster Team quick response, setting up offices etc. He said each time he'd see the same mess, nothing ever really got cleaned up, just kinda shoved over. So it's wholly possible for a hurricane to be category 4 at 10,000 feet up, but a category 1 at 20 feet, which is where it should realistically be assessed.
So far this storm's winds hew more closely to a category 1 than a 4.

It made landfall at 150 mph, a strong Cat 4 -- Cat 5 starts at 157 mph sustained winds.
One reason it's gonna take time to restore power to NO is one of those huge metal transmission towers collapsed. A new one will have to be erected first, I think.
In a way, LA got a small bit of luck in that the eye path went midway between Baton Rouge and NO, so it wasn't a direct hit on either city.
But yeah, it is going to be a long slow painful recovery process.

So it's wholly possible for a hurricane to be category 4 at 10,000 feet up, but a category 1 at 20 feet, which is where it should realistically be assessed.
I believe they use the 10000 foot readings to estimate the ground level winds. For instance 120 knot winds at 10000 feet might indicate 100 knot winds at the surface. Ultimately, you need to rely on the anemometer near the surface. Problem is, they sometimes go out with higher wind gusts.

I found this in a zerohedge comment thread of ALL places, so I thought it was alex jones level conspiracy, but then I tried to dig up more and the AP wires reported Ida's wind was classified as category 4 at 10,000 feet by NOAA planes, and I can't find anything that confirms they measured at 20 feet like they were supposed to, only mentions of the winds being measured at 10,000 feet.
The real clue will be if the damages of Ida turn out to be not nearly as bad as Katrina. A REAL category 4 hurricane would have wiped out NOLA like the hand of God swiping away a fly.

I think they drop instruments which then measure the profile all the way down as they fall. How? I have no idea. If they drop it, it will move with the wind, but maybe they use GPS or inertia to figure out how fast it is moving.
Anyway, a profile like that would be a lot more accurate at determining accurate wind speed. If that is how they do it.

One time when I was all set do interview a candidate, they disappeared on me. I got the call from the front desk that the recruit was on site, and I went to greet them. They were gone. I asked the desk person where they'd gone and she didn't know. She saw them with one of my co-workers.
I went to the interview room. No candidate. I called my co-worker, no answer. I started looking in all of the conference rooms and open offices. No candidate.
After about 30 minutes, my co-worker shows up and asks where'd I'd been. I'm angry, but I keep my cool and say I've been looking for my candidate. Co-worker says he took it upon himself to greet the candidate and take them to a room to be comfortable and wait. It didn't occur to co-worker to let anyone know where they were or what had happened.

I don't necessarily disagree. But there are a fair amount of people who didn't come directly into the country. Some transited in from other places like Pakistan, etc. and they were not tracked. Keep in mind the Afghan system of immigration (with all the records now in the hands of the Taliban) was less efficient then, let's say, our DHS, which is saying a lot. Irrespective, they should know now. All those people contacted the embassy, and then the embassy told them to F off. Or they left them outside the gate.

That's up to the Taliban, I think. If they either let American citizens escape (flee for a border) or quietly kill them, the story may go away in not too long. There iwll be lingering stories of family members who had people end up "missing" but those will be containable.
If the Taliban decides to kill them publicly, or to pull an Iran maneuver and hold them for ransom complete with hostage videos and social media, then this story never goes away.

Alongside the Bourbon Street area is a wall and from the top of that wall (there are steps up) you can see the Mississippi River and it's only a few feet from the top of that wall. Bourbon street is BELOW the level of the river. So it's going to always flood when a storm comes thru and pushes the gulf water up the river and rises 3-10 feet.
It's not a disaster. A disaster is something that no one thought would happen. The people know it's going to happen. They have done little to abate the danger or the outcome when it does.
This includes the Corps of Engineers, the mayor of NOLA, the Governor of LA and departments of the FedGov.
Cure: Move the city/raise the wall. This is the only two answers (well tear it all down but that's never going to happen.) I'm surprised you can get Insurance in the area. If you can that is. It's not a risk when you know it will happen. Then it's a cost of doing business.

More than that, they were instrumental in a years-long op against Trump. Spygate would never have gotten off the ground if it weren't for massive amounts of legwork by the GCHQ and British Intelligence. New Zealand and Australia were involved, too, but that was being fenced through the UK for almost everything.

Well, you could raise the city. Drive steel cofferdams down a hundred-odd feet into the muck. Divide the city's substructure into square or hexagonal cells. Within each cell, drill wellbores down to a permeable sand layer, and pump mud down the wellbores. The land surface within each cell ought to rise like piston in a cylinder.
