The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Before you set your hair on fire; yes, the author is a leftist. He also is reflexively anti-Trump, sounds like an anti-Semite, comes off as a smug academic, but also has some genuinely interesting interpretations of the current Woke malaise we find ourselves enduring.

Woke Institutions is Just Civil Rights Law

People have generally misunderstood wokeness as a purely cultural phenomenon. It does have a cultural component, of course, but it is important to also understand wokeness as something that has been law in the United States for the last half century.

The triumph of this ideology over the last 10 years in public discourse is simply culture catching up to law. To reverse what has happened, one needs to know a bit of the history, and how every major institution in the country came to act and think in the exact same way.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Griggs v. Duke Power Co. (1971) are obvious progenitors of the insanity of the last 10 years, but Hanania also blames presidential executive orders and most of all a federal bureaucracy that is entrenched and always expanding its reach into boardrooms. He links the rise of Human Resources (always the farthest left of anyone in business) in American corporations to the increase in regulations governing all facets of hiring and conduct. Since the government regulations are chaotic and ever changing, it behooves the typical corporation to follow the herd, and the herd has stampeded to draconian restrictions on what used to be private behavior. Hostile work environments, disparate impact, equal opportunity, affirmative action, and the rest of the litany of government-driven initiatives that have entered our culture as axioms.

The article is long, but worth a read, especially because the author suggests a way of this, and it doesn't include simply ranting and raving at every Woke insanity we are subjected to every day.

Taking apart disparate impact and repealing affirmative action executive orders should be litmus tests for Republican presidential candidates in the same way taxes and abortion are.

Why hasn't this happened already? Probably because the payoff to fighting wokeness is more long term. People seek immediate gratification; you can change the tax rate or how many immigrants you let in immediately, while it's hard to convince people to have a political fight today in the hopes of having an uncertain effect on culture years or even decades down the line. Moreover, it's hard work to go to war with an entrenched bureaucracy that has the media completely on its side, especially if you haven't explained to your voters why doing so is necessary. Nonetheless, I'm convinced there is no short-cut to changing the culture.

No, there is no short-cut. But there also isn't an option. We either fight back or cede this country to the left. And not the Woke left...I mean the real left of labor camps and state-sanctioned murder and misery and starvation.

The willing fools of the Woke left should read more communist history and fewer sociology textbooks. Trotsky and Kirov and Bukharin come to mind, but Stalin killed about 1/3 of the communist party to consolidate power during his "Great Purge," and the hysterical wokesters will surely be among the first victims in an American Great Purge.

It appears to me if a company stays smallish, about less than 2,000 people, HR does what it's supposed to do and stays inside it's lane, but when a company hits critical mass, they explode and become a huge pain in the a$$ for everyone involved. 35 He's wrong. He's assuming -- as unfortunately many people do -- that wokeness is a universal or near-universal phenomena. It's not. It's strictly limited to mostly East and West coastal blue cities, which include the media, advertising, and most corporate boardrooms. Unfortunately this cult wields incredible political, legal, and cultural power. Outside these leftist cults, however, the vast majority of normal Americans reject it. Even most minorities reject it. It's not "culture" catching up to law. It's a fetishistic counter-culture being forcibly imposed by on a mostly unwilling population. If indeed this was culture catching up to law on a wide scale, then the cult wouldn't have to be so iron-fisted in dealing with dissenters. You don't have to force medicine down people's throats if they are already willing to take it.

41 Affirmative action, disparate impact, all of it - don't exist because of HR or some vague thing like a big bureaucracy. They exist because the judicial system is a farce, with respect to its constitutional watchdog function.

And, crucially, because of race grifters quite happy to "benefit" from these and all kinds of disastrous, essentially racist absurdities. And the endemic racism and victimology of "minority""communities", and the inexhaustible supply of dumb faux-guilt-ridden suburbanites, and the tiny characters in public office terrified of these things.

52 Ten days ago, Jen Psaki estimated between 10-15,000 American citizens at risk of being left behind in Afghanistan. She said that number range had physically contacted the embassy in Kabul or contacted the American military directly. Since then, the administration says they got 6,000 out.

Forget the "several hundred" number the Centcom commander was referring to, because he might well have been referring only to those left at the airport itself.

Jen Psaki suggests the right number is between 4-9,000 people left to the mercy of the Taliban, who are even now conducting house to house summary executions, according to Lara Logan.

61 The Wokesters might be the first purged ... AFTER the effective America First legions are destroyed. There is already an active purging of Americanism Patriots ongoing in the few institutions that have some good people remaining (military and police).

The purge (from society and corporate level jobs) is also taking place in what they perceive to be a resistance ... those that won't be forced to get the jab. ...

The purge also took place decades ago in another sense ... those that depend on government for grants must bow to the global warming mantra, or they get fired and removed from academia, even removed from regular jobs.

But AFTER they get total control and have exiled or killed of "deplorable Christians", then there might be some purging of the useful idiots. We the deplorables will probably be cut off from alternative media by then, so won't get any joy in their demise.

Once you let an outside consultant in and get a list of recommendations, your natural instinct to protect against liability in employee disputes is to follow the recommendations. I mean, even if the law was just "You gotta have at least 13% black employees," then HR wouldn't have gotten so big since it's the uncertainty that matters.

But don't undersell the fact that HR is one of the few fields corporate executives in many type companies can hire attractive women fresh out college to hang around corporate HQ and no one will bat an eye. Dude executives at Tech Giants or mining companies or whatever don't get many opportunities for that otherwise.

73 Taking apart disparate impact and repealing affirmative action executive orders should be litmus tests for Republican presidential candidates in the same way taxes and abortion are.

Serious question - at this point, do "litmus tests" even matter? It is axiomatic that a Rethuglican will say anything to get elected, will refuse to do anything regarding the electorate's wishes and then, when up for re-election, vomit out a litany of excuses as to why abortion or lower taxes or "that danged fence" was blocked by the evil left, and if you'll only VOTE HARDER!, your candidate will run back to DC and "fight" for you.

Save for Trump, it's a shell game. I don't trust any GOP stooge to do anything outside the proscribed limits the CoC / CCP set down.

And Yes I agree with this. I was fortunate to get a job that I liked and was paid well for almost 20 years. It was during this time (late 80s on) that the HR dominance rose to its current heights.

Where the person who needs the help doesn't vet and interview the prospects but someone straight out of college who's major makes them unemployable in that field. So they get hired because of a degree and since more women get degrees (because of the way education is done and also special consideration given females) why of course they're mostly female. And some of them can be really really annoying. Arrogant youth after 4 years of college means they know everything and are always right.

When I tried to get work for the few years till retirement, I ran into HR people for the first time in my life. It did not go well.

Recycling plastics is a big thing, right? Unfortunately, any recycling takes them down a step in where they can be used.

Many years ago, I had the idea of just tossing them all into a refining process and break them back down to their constituent monomers. After all, they couldn't be worse than some of the heavy stuff refineries deal with.

I brought the idea to the big boys, who said, no, couldn't do it, it wouldn't work. Now I'm doing a search for a client on catalysts for taking big 'uns and busting them into small 'uns. What do I see among the results? Disclosure after disclosure on breaking down plastics in refining processes.

Premature innovation never pays. And it's not for the first time this has happened.

107 ... is simply culture catching up to law.

*****

It's not that simple though. In healthcare at least, there is an intricately interwoven network of effects in a sequence over 2-4 decades. It perhaps started with culture, but then was enacted into legislation (HIPPA, EMTALA, etc.), leading to a need for regulatory compliance that was tied to revenue (Medicaid, Medicare, etc.). This then combined with a concerted indifference from physicians who abdicated their role as decision-makers and deferred to the hospital administrators and bean counters. Once doctors realized what was happening, they had been relegated to even less than stakeholder status, and had become mere employees. Now they are being held hostage, with threat of losing licenses or being denied compensation for services if they don't toe the "woke" line. (see COVID protocols, puberty blockers, etc. etc.)

It used to be that hospital administrators' chief function was helping doctors provide better medical services. Now, administrators work within a government-industrial cooperative to maximize their revenue streams by offering "service lines" of care.

Posted by: Muldoon at August 31, 2021 10:32 AM (m45I2)

108 MPPP, a very good description of what's really broken in the "system" - the buttons and levers of representative government are generally no longer connected to anything. So when a desperate and furious majority, even, votes X - they rarely get any, or much, X.

Political integrity. Doing, or trying to do, what you say.

On the national level, Trump has the highest score in that key respect of any figure for a very very long time. Hence his popularity and intensity of support - actually it's also important that what he stands for and did are popular, sensible, and successful.

There's a complicated mix, though, of levers being disconnected from actions, and voters who simply will not revolt, who will Vote Harder and remain locked in their mindless tribal/partisan framework. And a de fact two-party system simply traps many, no real choice.

I would be somewhat skeptical on this. I find it hard to imagine that, in its first week after taking on the responsibility of an entire country, the Taliban gets down to business doing experiments on animals. Also, there were several pictures of this sort released in the 2001-2003 era. I think I saw those on GP back then as well. Having said that, seeing the barbaric and sadistic treatment they are willing to impose on humans, I certainly fear for the animals.

Posted by: rickb223 at August 31, 2021 10:46 AM (OCTRt)

Apparently the lack was not bad enough to trigger the citizens.

Besides they're not allowed out much so they might not see the lack of stock on shelves or think that it's lack of employees to restock the shelves.

I'm just responding to the question about whether the truckies (aussie for truckers here) actually did what they said they will do.

Probably no enough independent drivers and/or the cops came and started ticketing and arresting. And all of that won't be on the news either.

This is why when the infotainment industry becomes cooperative or coopted by the Gov't the population is at a distinct disadvantage.

I think you are correct in that. Part of my point was that the process began gradually and incrementally. Doctors by and large want to practice medicine. So as the administrative regulatory compliance and complexities of getting reimbursed grew, doctors were more than happy to cede those functions to administrators. Somewhere along the way the roles flipped and the doctors became beholden to the administrators rather than the other way around. By the time most doctors realized it was happening, it was a fait accompli. This is why I use the term 'abdication'.

Is it reversible? I don't know. I do know that doctors under age 40 or so have no recollection of or first-hand experience of the alternative.

Handlers risk their lives to save and protect their dogs, they break rules and have rules bent for them to take their dogs with them when they leave service or are disabled in service - they're like children to these guys.

And none of it makes any sense. The "exfil" was completely permissive. There was plenty of space. Why the F would dogs be left behind?

It might be time to stop treating the GOP as a normal political party and its hateful rhetoric as just politics. The party and its echo chamber remain a threat not only to democracy but also to the safety and security of those they demean.

Hey, I know it *sounds* crazy, but maybe we should create a *legal* difference between two political parties.

Maybe the government, largely in the hands of the Democratic party, should discriminate between a political party like itself and its major opposition!

I know it sounds drastic, but this might be the time!

'As a father, you know, seeing that and the disrespect...'
Schmitz added: 'I leaned into my son's mother's ear and I said, I swear to God, if he checks his watch one more time - and that was probably only four times in.
'I couldn't look at him anymore after that.

We are reaping two different attacks on our culture. One is our patriotism and nationalism and the other is our education.

Our children have been/are being indoctrinated and at the same time being ill taught basic subjects of vital interest towards anyone wanting a basic understanding of how the human race got to where it is today. And also how other plant and animal life evolves and is modified.

There are always "shades of gray" and it can be useful to quote Maher bashing Wokeness ... but "we should take foreign cultures (Afghans) into our homes"? ... I don't need 100% agreement from anyone ... not even my patriot friends. But Maher is more like "controlled resistance" (or maybe just marginally less maniacal than some leftists) than like my ally.

I take exception to this comment.

Maher is not our ally in this fight, no matter what he says now. His issue is now how far wokeness and cancel culture is going, but there is zero evidence he objects to the underlying cultural shift that produced these facts. He has been increasingly vocal against extreme cancel culture and censorship, which I ascribe to self-interest an not ideology (as you imply).

As far as your offensive broad brush generalization about "the right" goes, I think it reveals more of your own prejudice than it does the perspective of someone actually arguing from the right.

And Home Schooling is soaring all over the country. This is good and will weaken the power the Teacher's union has over the country and of course it's education.

This is one way to walk the march of the left thru the institutions; discard the institutions and substitute others leaving the left controlling a useless shell that no longer can hold the local schools hostage.

Being a chemist, you know that plastic is basically just polymerized hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons are good fuel. Just shred the plastics up, and burn them to fuel power plants. One potential problem is PVC, because of the chlorine in the molecule. You'd need some sort stack scrubber to deal with chlorine combustion products.
