26 So sad:
This is likely a posthumous portrait commissioned by her parents after her death in 1878.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, nihilism is all fun and games with a Carpenter leading the way at September 01, 2021 08:32 AM (LvTSG)

Born in 1857, Julia Ward was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Seeley Ward. She is shown in three-quarter profile in richly embroidered classically-inspired garb: note the skillfully-rendered golden threads at her shoulders. This is likely a posthumous portrait commissioned by her parents after her death in 1878. The crown of morning glories may reference the brevity of her life: the flowers bloom and die within a single day.

41 the internet informs me Ward died at barely 21 years old and her parents commissioned this portrait after her demise, with the morning glory head piece likely signifying her short life span.

I was watching an episode of The Podcast of the Lotus Eaters, which is Carl Benjamin's new thing and they discussed the matter.

Women have been cleaning up downstairs for eons. The Egyptians hated body hair on men and women. I don't know about the men, but aristocratic Egyptian women were depilated.

It was also popular in mediaeval England, something I leaned from Liza Picard's Chaucer's People.

It was not, however, a widespread practice until the invention of the safety razor.

Yowza. That is a big miss.

For those who might not know, ADP is a major payroll and business services data processor. They maintain employment data and the ADP employment figures are often considered to be something of a "shadow stat" for the official unemployment data from the Department of Labor. They only track their own stuff so it isn't as longitudinal as the DoL data set, but it is an enormous and broad-spectrum data set. A miss this big is not a good sign.

And yeah, there is always variance and sometimes it is big. The ADP data set is different - absolutely and in terms of its statistical universe - from BLS. It is an interesting point to track, though.

And migration. As people from third-world hellholes with poor public health continue to flood the first world countries with good public health, TB and whooping cough spread easily. We're no longer very resistant to it (because we killed them both off through sanitation and treatment), and they spread like wildfire here.

There's a reason we used to do health screening on immigrants and send people home or put them in quarantine if they were sick.

As do I. There are three reasons for this:
1. I like the privacy of cash.
2. If they don't want to pay taxes, that's not my business.
3. The cash price is often lower than the listed price because they don't have to pay the vig on credit cards or it gives them a certain tax ... flexibility.

The more crazy, ridiculous it gets the harder people will support it and attack those who point out the reality. This is because it reflects on their own shallowness and stupidity. Every moment they don't denounce and admit their failure the proof of their incompetence and maleficence increases. They believe they are immune from the consequences of this due to the media always providing cover for the lies they've adopted. Covering lies and attacking enemies of the left is the media's whole job. So it will always get worse and worse, crazier and crazier until it all goes non-linear and there's a reckoning which will be bad for everyone but they don't care.

"Do I feel good right now?" <-- that's all they care about.

425 345 Social Security Trust Fund to be exhausted in 2036.

I remember back when Reagan and Tip O'Neil "fixed" social security. They "fixed" it by raising taxes. I had just gotten my first part time job and was too young to vote, but I realized they were bribing my parents with my money.

The plan was always for the fund to run out. They used to say 2037. It will run out sooner (than 2036). They'll "fix" it by raising taxes again because the precedent has been set.

Posted by: zmdavid at September 01, 2021 09:50 AM (xqRaG)

426 Unfortunately, Biden's Afghanistan immolation is going to make it hard for even some people in the 'let it burn' crowd (like me) to just let the Democrats win in 2022. At this point, the alternative is just too awful to contemplate. Now, I'm conflicted.
Posted by: Darrell Harris at September 01, 2021 09:42 AM (mdjgu)

I understand your feares, Darrell, but it's too late, IMO. The GOP as a national party must be destroyed. It's been said often on this blog that people don't revolt because the comforts of life still exist. If there is to be any meaningful change in the governance of America, it HAS to "let it burn."

At this point, letting the GOP get away with the "but the Dems!" wolf cry is akin to letting your wife come back home after she's spent the last year fucking the Paolo, running up your credit cards and emptying your bank account.

436 The company traditionally has converted combination aircraft, or combis, into full freighters. Combis are built with an extra-strength floor to allow them to haul passengers and freight on the main deck. Passenger models lack that reinforcement.

Conversion companies must show their designs for beefing up a passenger plane for cargo won`t over stress the wings or create flutter under extreme conditions, said Janice Elrod, a safety inspector in the airworthiness branch of the FAA`s aircraft manufacturing office in Washington.

Menachem Shimol, a test pilot for Israel Aircraft, reported that its test plane reached 0.98 Mach in an 18-degree dive from 36,000 feet Sept. 30.

Details of the test were not released until this month, however, after the FAA approved the Supplemental Type Certificate that Israel Aircraft need to begin converting passenger planes to freighters.

Pilots described the high-speed experience as ''a little frightening''

but said they were confident the plane would remain controllable.

Tom Cole, a spokesman at Boeing Commercial Airplane Co., said original flight tests of 747s conducted in 1969 and 1970 took 747-100 models to speeds of Mach 0.99.

MP4, that is a very funny analogy. It's also accurate. I suppose that if 47% of the electorate still thinks that Biden is doing an OK job, even at this point, that there's still a lot of ruination left to experience. That's a real shame.

That's very common. You will have to do flutter testing. You will have to decend into your flutter point at a specific alt Q Mach starting with a higher Mach and slowing down. You have to show you have margin for that analytically which often involves + Mach 1.00 even. Because if you hit an inversion at 0.99 there's a risk of +1.00 and so you have to show it. There's so much work load on the pilot and the ground crew, often using derated engines for an extra push as long as it doesn't break conformity.

But all those aircraft have to be put in steep dives for flutter testing and always hit very high fractions of Mach.

511 I became disillusioned with politics at an early age by watching the Social Security fix in the '80s. Reagan got praised for raising taxes, which is not what he campaigned on. Everyone talked about their undying love for social security and then turned around and said we needed taxes to be more progressive (Social Security is a regressive tax). None of it made sense.

I just figured there must have been some awesome propaganda to lay the groundwork for it before I was born.

Something I bet a lot of other teams did too. Which considering how the NFL has behaved on this can you blame them "Get vaccinated! Oh and if you have unvaccinated players and they get sick we might have to cancel your games." Which will lead to owners telling the coaches that they better not cost them any money because of cancelled games. And just keep rolling down that slope until you get to Urban Meyer admitting it out loud.

I get ya, but it's pretty bad. It's all white-knuckle high-risk testing and is high stress for everyone involved. Stall testing, and searching for Va, are about the only ones I've seen that are more high stress. Even engine restart tests don't seem as bad. You try to mitigate risks to achieve a common level of safety but some testing seems higher risk than others.
