LAST SUMMER, WHEN clinics began to tentatively reopen, dermatologist Shadi Kourosh noticed a worrying trend—a spike in appointment requests for appearance-related issues. “It seemed that, at a time like that, other matters would be top of mind, but a lot of people were really concerned with feeling that they looked much worse than usual,” she says.
Kourosh, who is an assistant professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School, soon discovered that others in her field and related ones such as plastic surgery had noticed a similar phenomenon. And when she and her colleagues asked patients what was driving their decision to seek treatment, a lot of them cited videoconferencing. The pandemic had catapulted them into a world of Zoom calls and Teams meetings, and staring at their own face on a screen all day every day was wreaking havoc with their self-image. In the age of Zoom, people became inordinately preoccupied with sagging skin around their neck and jowls; with the size and shape of their nose; with the pallor of their skin. They wanted cosmetic interventions, ranging from Botox and fillers to facelifts and nose jobs. Kourosh and colleagues surveyed doctors and surgeons, examining the question of whether videoconferencing during the pandemic was a potential contributor to body dysmorphic disorder. They called it “Zoom dysmorphia.” Now, with the rise in vaccinations seemingly pushing the pandemic into retreat, new research from Kourosh’s group at Harvard has revealed that Zoom dysmorphia isn’t going away. A survey of more than 7,000 people suggests the mental scars of the coronavirus will stay with us for some time. Even before Covid, plastic surgeons and dermatologists were seeing a rise in patients coming to them with demands that were “unrealistic and unnatural,” Kourosh says. The term “Snapchat dysmorphia” was coined in 2015 to describe the growing numbers of people who wanted to look like they’d been put through a face-altering filter in real life, all big eyes and sparkling skin. Before that, a patient might turn up at a plastic surgeon’s office with photos of a celebrity they wanted to look like clipped from a magazine. Even before the rise of social media, psychologists found that people who stared at themselves in a mirror became more self-conscious.
But Zoom dysmorphia is different. Unlike with Snapchat, where people are aware that they’re viewing themselves through a filter, video conferencing distorts our appearance in ways we might not even realize, as Kourosh and her coauthors identified in their original paper. Front-facing cameras distort your image like a “funhouse mirror,” she says—they make noses look bigger and eyes look smaller. This effect is exacerbated by proximity to the lens, which is generally nearer to you than a person would ever stand in a real-life conversation. Looking down at a smartphone or laptop camera is the least flattering angle—as anyone from the MySpace generation will tell you, the best camera position is from above, hence the ubiquity of the selfie stick. We’re also used to seeing our own reflection when our faces are relaxed—the concentrated frown (or bored expression) you wear in a Zoom meeting jars with the image of yourself you’re used to seeing in the mirror. “Changes in self-perception and anxiety as a result of constant video-conferencing may lead to unnecessary cosmetic procedures, especially in young adults who have had increased exposure to online platforms including videoconferencing, social media, and filters throughout the pandemic,” write Kourosh, Channi Silence, and other colleagues. The term “Zoom dysmorphia” was picked up by international media, and Kourosh was inundated with emails from friends and strangers who it resonated with. In the new follow up study due to be published in the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology, the research group found that 71 percent of the 7,000 people surveyed were anxious or stressed about returning to in-person activities, and that nearly 64 percent had sought mental health support.

The U.S. citizens who were unable to get past Taliban checkpoints outside the airport will have to find other ways to escape Afghanistan. And the tens of thousands of Afghans who helped the United States – and in many cases saved the lives of American troops – are now totally defenseless against the Taliban, who have shown no desire to offer mercy.

American troops are due to leave Afghanistan on Tuesday, even though uncounted Americans are stuck in the country. And by stuck, it appears that our American government is deliberately denying them access to Kabul airport. This isn't a wild rumor. Instead, it comes from two eminently reliable reporters (Lara Logan and Emily Miller) and from Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL. On Saturday morning, a 2019 Tesla Model 3, reportedly on Autopilot, crashed into two parked cars in Orlando, Florida. According to FHP’s report, at the time of the incident, a trooper had stopped to help another driver whose 2012 Mercedes GLK 350 was disabled at the side of the Interstate 4 in Orlando. The highway officer had already stepped out of the police vehicle, a 2018 Dodge Charger, when the Tesla run into it. First, it hit the left side of the police car, and then it hit the Mercedes. Pretty sure the Taliban are at their high water mark right now, rhomboid. They are overstretched far beyond what they can physically control and are counting on cooperation from tribal leaders. When they don't deliver the goods, their remit fades away, especially the futher you get from Kandahar. If they'll let the Chinese and Pakistanis actually run the country behind the scenes, much like we did, they may have a chance. But my guess is that Dostum and Atta are running the north again within a year.

Sorry about your knee. If you can do it and the weather where you are allows it, consider just going for a walk in some nice surroundings if you haven't been doing that. I've had a family with me, but over the past few weeks we've visited several arboretums and it's been great. There was one that also had fields with wildflowers and lots of golden finches and it was beautiful.
In the past I've also stayed at some convents for at least a weekend and they had nice gardens and it was nice t walk in the gardens or just sit in the chapels, but it does make it harder if you have young ones to look after.

I worked in an office that was supporting and granting out funds for survivors of sexual and physical violence.
part of my training was to read a book that had a narrative about emotional trauma for witnessing violence and how it makes you callous*, and had chapter head quotes of such humanitarian luminaries such as "Che" Guevara and Ho Chi Minh.

I have a couple/several cigars that have been sitting for months in one of my humidors. The variations in humidity in the house leave something to be desired with this process.
IIRC the biggest issue beginners have with this is mold. It will typically ruin all the sticks in the box. Final analysis IMO is this is a bit over rated. YMMV

I've mentioned an interview LASue linked, Kash Patel with the Epoch Times guy Jekeliek. Kash touched on, or referred to, almost every important element in the story, but didn't go into detail. Hoping somebody will pull the full, actual story together. I'm comfortable with the outlines of Kash's conclusions, and long ago knew what I thought of the main characters in the current debacle. But the real story is the one of historic note, not so much Afghanistan returning to mean.

If you keep it bundled up inside you, you run the risk of getting callous or weird. Both are reactions to the stress.

Yeah, and I've had it greatly improve some cigars from "cheap crap" to quite nice, indeed. And some Cuban cigars aged to sublime excellence, too.
Downside is if you don't recognize when the cigars have aged to their peak, with the exuded oils beginning to form a white-ish crystalline film, at which point they need to be put into the smoking rotation with no further delay. Wait three more months, and they'll have begun to resemble stale coffee in cigar form. Most premium cigars can bear at most, seven to ten years in an average humidor. Yeah, lab-grade hermetically sealed chambers might allow more, but I'm not going to spend that much on storage when I can just buy more and more varied cigars, instead.

What does a vaccine do? It causes your immune system to have an immune response as if you had the virus.
If you contract the virus and recover naturally, you will have the same and in many cases a better more enduring immunity, because you are exposed to the entire virus and not just the spike protein.
And the studies, which were never really necessary, are demonstrating this quite effectively.
Vaccine's aren't super soldier serums no matter how many corrupt government Drs and Scientists profer and it's becoming increasingly clear, they're junk or worse.

A vaccine against corona viruses, flu viruses was never going to work, they have huge host reservoirs in animals, and mutate readily.
By the time they came up with a vaccine, even an expedited one, we'd probably had 30 or 40 per cent immunity? And then there's the ADE issue, never mind side effects.

One one hobby forum, in the off topic sub forum people were practically doing cart wheels because they "won" the right to be first in line for the brandy new vaccine. I merely pointed out that it is very risky to take an experimental vaccine. They all went bat shit crazy, and claimed it was just like the annual flu shots, nothing experimental whatsoever about it. Then claimed I was "antiscience" and all the other usual passive aggressive feminine snark that has infected both sexes. It is really bizarre to see people lose all reason.

I read a article tracing that evolution at the WHO. Previously, the WHO used the traditional, decades long definition of herd immunity to include natural.
Then, they changed it to completely remove any mention of natural immunity.
They have now added natural immunity back in, but changed it to something about "vaccines are the preferred way" to get to herb immunity.

They need to look at the immune profile of an infected vaxxee after he recovers from infection. I'm not aware of any studies that look at that.
It will be very interesting to see what that does. Does that get you back to back to the more broad spectrum recognition of pristine natural immunity, or is it still inferior. I would expect there will be differences.

Yes, but the point still stands, vaccines are not better than a natural immune and recovery response and they don't confer anything over and above your natural immune system would provide.
The reason why we developed vaccines and vaccinate is because certain viruses are incredibly debilitating, such as polio or measles.
Fun Fact: If you had polio and recovered, well, you're now largely immune from polio, there are three strains, you might get another strain, but that's ridiculously rare, but there's a vaccine for polio, so yay.

Go way down to the supplemental, chart s7, and you'll see profiles of individual subjects. It lowers the total for all except one, but shifts all toward the spike.
Heavy spike recognition in the natural immune profile is associated with severe disease. The worse it hits you, the more spike recognition you're gonna develop.

Sure we stopped the Taliban but we didn't eliminate it. That had to come from the people of Afghanistan and they didn't step up for whatever reason and now they're going to pay. As I understand it (and this could change) Israel has put a time limit of 6 months before the booster. You will need to the booster after 6 months or you will not be considered full vaccinated.

Problem with color laser printers is that they have steganography embedded in them. Their firmware is programmed to encode the printer's maker and serial number into every page printed, in the form of a pattern of 0.1 mm dots repeated throughout the image. Purpose is to defeat the use of color lasers for counterfeiting, but they brand every page you print. Goodbye, privacy.

Those are the N-proteins. To get sterilizing immunity, you've got to have N-protein recognition as I understand it. That's what needed for "mucosal immunity".
There are several class of proteins with these coronavirus, S(spike), N(nucleocapsid), M(membrane), and E(envelope).

Thanks. They are promoting them as more durable than the ink cartridge printers. They sell el-cheapo "all in one machines" for $39, but two replacement cartridges cost you $40. And they put a "death gene" in the cartridges so they register "empty" after X number of months, regardless of how much use they had.
If I invest $300 in a tank-feed printer, i want it to last at least 10 years, and be supported for that long.

Depends on what you mean by "effects". The protection offered by them is gone after 6 months, looks like (some protection against "severe disease" may remain longer).

Suppose that with that escape variant, the original "Wuhan classic) spike antibodies become enhancing. ADE big time.
Now, if you've been jabbed, and you still have some spike response there, you're in trouble. Question is how long will you be in trouble. If there's much memory (B-cell and T-cell) spike response, you could be fucked for a long time.
There, you'll want a reformulated booster to try to get your system shifted to the new variant and kill the enhancing effect.
But you'll get diminishing returns there (OAS effects).
The much more broad spectrum natural immunity will likely protect there. If you get enough of that from a post-jab infection and recovery, you may be good.

Maybe it has some utility for some people, but on the whole it is not a good idea for people previously infected, either.

There is a T-cell test for immunity, called T-detect or something like that. Costs $150 IIRC. It will detect T-cell reactivity and confirm a previous infection even if antibodies have waned to nil.

The 'vaccine' test regimen they used was a double blind test, BUT they did not continuously test for Covid, UNLESS you exhibited symptoms, especially a fever.
The Vaccine apparently stops the virus from really infecting your lungs, so you don't get as sick, BUT still allows it to infect your nasal passages. Which means, you have a runny nose, and a HIGH virus load (so you can spread it) without any major symptoms.
thus, this is NOT a vaccine, as it does not stop you from getting the virus, this is a TREATMEANT for not getting it as bad.... Virus is here to stay.

Interesting thought Miklos. My Dad stepped up, aged 43, when his Dad, aged 79, died unexpectedly starting their winter vacation. Brought Grandma back and did a good job on the estate.
Lordy, now I'm 65 and sometime I'll have to deal w/ my Dad's stuff, he's 85. I'm too old to deal w/ all they had, Mom was an antique dealer, but will figure it out.

He's currently in the final year of his apprenticeship.
Financially, we'll be able to move easier, whether rent or own, dunno yet, but we'll be able to move out of IL.

Just saw the funniest thing and laughed my ass off (to keep from crying). It was a text exchange between two nurses arguing over the vaccine.
One went mentioned that using a non-sterilizing vaccine in the middle of a pandemic was a very bad thing to do.
The other nurse replied, you're stupid, every needle we use to inject the vaccine is sterilized! It says so on the package!

Stainless steel, of the 300 series is austenitic (you can look that up). It consists of a solid solution (yes, solids can be in solutions with other solids) of iron, chromium, nickel, and carbon.
When one is a-weldin' that shit, one gets the surrounding metal what don't melt very hot close to the puddle of weldin' one is a-doin. Now, when that temperature gets above a certain point, that there carbon wants to form a molecule with dat dere chromium.
When it does, it just hauls off and precipitates itself out that there solid solution and makes hard-ass black crud around the bead. If'n you let too much of that chromium precipitate out, you fuck up the corrodin' resistance 'round that there weld bead you's a doin'.
But ya always gonna get some.
