First-World Problems...

GorillaGlue.jpg

Has anyone in the long and sordid history of glue ever finished a bottle without it solidifying, or setting into an impenetrable plug in the nozzle?

The number of different glues we have available to us is truly amazing. From the lightest paper glues (remember Elmer's glue from grade school?) to the amazing super glues we have today that can glue pretty much anything...unless the damned thing has cured in the tube just when you absolutely need to glue something.

The most frustrating thing is when the applicator is glued solid, and there is plenty of liquid glue left in the container. What to do? I usually punch a small hole into the tube and use it that way. it's even odds whether it will cure solid and I will have to toss it immediately, or I can get two uses out of it before it turns to shit.

But the worst ones? Check below the fold.

superglue.jpg

Yup. I can get a few uses out of those stupid tubes before it cures completely. And damn! They are expensive!

Big Glue is evil...

Maybe not as bad as Big Ice (their monopoly on clear ice should be unconstitutional), or even the cable companies, but they aren't too far behind.

5 I have this issue regularly with plastic cement. It's compounded by the fact that for what I need it for, the applicator hole has to be very small.

6 I have probably gone through 100 tunes of super glue as I use it to fasten my metal miniatures to my wood bases and mount metal to metal on horse riders and vehicle connections.
I get through them well unless a big down time of months.

9 Don't know about Gorilla glue, but cyanoacrylate typically has a 'Use By' date stamped on it. I mean, the stuff polymerizes in *air*, so it can't last long.

As an aside, why in the hell doesn't someone make a litter box/liner combination that fits smoothly?

10 I often have to get a longer pin to break through the dried tips, rarely cutting tip off to get to wider part of nozzle, but that's as bad as it gets.

11 Always buy super glue in the multi packs, because you will usually need a new one next time.

Also the thing you've been looking for in order to repair plastics is called "Plast-Aid"

You mix the two parts, stir, and it bonds with plastic. And can be worked and shaped with your fingers, and won't stick to non-plastics.

Which makes me wonder: I live in an area that averages probably 70% humidity, a LOT more in the warmer months. How long does GG last in west Texas??

Not so much the price, but the annoyance of having to go to the store in the middle of a project upon discovering the tube has sealed itself. It is a very minor thing, fer sure.

I wonder how often, while trying to uncap a sealed tube, folks burst the tube and spray their hands and work area with the stuff?

186 I'm sorry to hear that Ed Asner is gone. He may have been a serious commie -- but if so, why was he not working much since the '80s? -- but he was a very effective actor. He began as a character actor, usually playing villains and tough security guys. Only after about 10-12 years did he get the big break on Mary Tyler Moore. The producers' idea on that show was not to hire comedians, but to hire actors who could be funny, and they did (Ted Knight, Asner, Gavin MacLeod as Murray, etc.). After that, as Lou especially, Asner was thought of as the big grumpy teddy bear in most things he did.

262 You know those great food packaging designs that started a few years ago and have become near universal? The packages of cheese or nuts or whatever with the strip you tear off, and then the re-sealable pressure zipper?

Uh huh. Except for the major brands, and not in all cases - they've ceased "working". They still mostly re-seal, which is the main thing. But the tear strip? Ha! Fugettaboutit. Except with brands that I know still work, I just take a scissors and cut, don't even try to use the tear strip engineered in, because they don't tear properly.

Related, the clear tight plastic seals over items like hummus, or dips, or anything in a plastic tub. Many of those - even though they still have a clear "tab" at some point, intended to give you a grip to tear them off - don't work any longer either. You just have to take out a knife and cut around the inside edge.

And these things all used to work, they were a great advance in convenience, and storage/freshness. Where's Aetius? He's in the business. I'm guessing quality of plastic, glues, assembly process - some combo of declining QC has essentially ruined many of these designs.

263 The reasons why boomer era toys are so expensive now are actually two:
Boomers are old and many have money and nostalgia
That was probably the last generation where toys were not in abundance, and most were played with and then tossed once outgrown.
I had a set of the first gen Hot Wheels cars that are now worth tons as a kid. Like most of the other kids, I launched them off the tracks and they got chipped and the axles got bent. There weren't many adults buying them and carefully putting them away in the mint package. You would have have to have been a serious weirdo adult to do that.

My gf and I used to harvest stuff at garage sales and eBay it. She had a really good eye for stuff that would sell. She lamented all the junk she should have kept from the 1960s.

Truth of the matter is, she would have been better off buying and holding precious metals and common stock. If you have a sixty year(!) maturity period on your investment, forget about collectibles. Collectibles have to stored and insured, and you can't predict what the market will be when you are ready to sell.

Antiques and collectible heyday was stimulated by the Antiques Roadshow. It's over now. Antique malls stuffed with shit that nobody wants.

Another delightful characteristic of acetone is that it dissolves quite a few plastics. Don't use it as a cleaner w/o testing a surface first.

The statement notes the Taliban's public commitment to this in recent days.

Cue all the abuse and derision for relying on the Taliban. But, under the circumstances, not much more can be said.

Behind the scenes, of course, lots is and can be done, from lots of $$$ into the right hands, to exfil by small groups (also happening), to overland departures under the radar. These will be mostly for Afghan nationals. I still doubt the Talib want to borrow the trouble of "hostages" - though it's A'stan, their "coalition" is rather rough, so others who haven't received winks and nods about $$$ and diplomatic goodies might take a different approach.

It's a hard game. If everyone saved something, the supply will meet the demand and the price will be low. A few things will always be valuable but their prices will never really drop. If I was trying to make money, I would try to think of semi disposable, popular items that were about 20 years old that were usually owned by the upper middle class that the less fortunate kids probably wanted but couldn't afford. 355 for some reason, I know not why, I was gifted with the ability to buy antiques that rich people wanted at the age of 10

It led me on a meteoric monetized ascent and left all other pursuits behind

I kind of see that sort of antique business as separate from the norm. Like the difference between car collectors who have a couple GTOs and those who deal in vintage Ferraris.

I know I might never see the answer but a relevant first question here is how much of this materiel was slated to be left for the Afghan regime/army when/if we had an orderly withdrawal? I'd think quite a bit of it.

Only point being that there'd be no removal plans for most of it, nor need for any.

One of the many ?s I had listening to Kash Patel's interview was his seeming implication that Bagram was key to removing equipment. But I don't think air was the primary method for moving bulk materiel. Could be wrong, but we didn't fly most of that stuff in, came in by surface transport.

368 Two things to do with anything that air cures or humidity cures (like RTV) in a tube or a bottle. If in a bottle, always store upside down. It'll last quite a bit longer (also store paint cans upside down). If in a tube, put the cap over the end and hold it, then squeeze a big glob of the stuff, while holding the cap in place, so a decent sized glob comes oozing out around the cap. Then push the cap all the way on and tighten it. Clean up the goo that oozed out. This purges all of the compound that may have been exposed to air or humidity so that the cure reaction can't get started. The tube will last almost as long as an unopened one.

Quick-set polyurethane products like Gorilla
Glue deteriorate when exposed to light. It may be one of the strongest glues available, but it darkens and crumbles pretty fast after it sets if exposed to light. I tend to use epoxy, and the epoxy putty with the consistency of modeling clay is particularly useful.

That yellow expanding insulating foam in a can is also polyurethane based, and it deteriorates under light exposure very fast.

Anyone who believes a fucking thing they see or hear from the news media - ANY news media - ever again is a submoron of the lowest fucking order.

They literally get everything wrong. And when you know the truth about something - even the most benign seemingly nonpolitical shit - all you ever hear from them is the opposite.

They obfuscate, cover up, lie, cheat, misreport, misinterpret, misunderstand, mislead and insult. And that's on a *good* day.

There also needs to be a complete redo of political terminology for people to truly get it. Once the "left" aged into being the establishment, we got the strange sight of Authority pretending to have the ideals of outsider rebels. The world is topsy turvy when a straight Christian patriotic male is your actual countercultural rebel by society's standards. The "anti-fascists" are textbook fascists. 386 I don't understand electricity or wiring. Here's my dilemma, I have a kind of old house, about 80 years old. The wiring is all original, never been upgraded. Some kind of solid copper wrapped with what looks like paper but might be something else. Doesn't look like plastic. So, old.

The house has 2 prong outlets as would be expected but also 3 prong. That surprised me so I took an outlet checker by Klien that came with a multimeter and plugged it in to the outlet. It said all good, hot, neutral, and ground all good. It has a code for open ground and that was off. Ok interesting. I also have a power strip that has a ground checker and it also said the ground was good.

Well, the outlet was upside down. Contractors will do that now days to signal the outlet is connected to the room switch but this wasn't the case. So I powered down the house, to take it out and flip it and I see the ground is open. Only two wires neutral and hot as would be expected in an old house. So how can I have a ground there? Magic? I'm sorry for my ignorance I'm stumped. Shouldn't they have put a gfi there? Is it really grounded? Maybe at the panel? What does that all mean?

389 Gorilla Glue:
1. Purchase absolute smallest container you can. I bought the .75 oz "Pen" version.
2. When finished dispensing, point tube up and squeeze tube to expel as much air as possible. This also pushes excess glue out of the tip.
3. Screw cap onto tube.
4. Store upright so glue does not flow into tip.

Pro Tip: Gorilla Glue sets up in the presence of water. Expelling air expels any moisture too, giving the glue a longer life.

390 Super Glues:
I found keeping them upright in the refrigerator extends their life by years.

Posted by: Dan at August 29, 2021 07:22 PM (+NG5U)

391 Also Super Glues:
Buy a bunch of tiny tubes of the stuff at Harbor Freight. You'll get perhaps two uses out of them before they set up.

Posted by: Dan at August 29, 2021 07:23 PM (+NG5U)

392 Gorilla glue sets up in the presence of moisture, so if you can re cap it BEFORE you release the squeeze, that may help to keep from sucking humidity back into the bottle. Easier said than done.

As to the cured plug in the applicator neck, you can twist in a #6 drywall screw a ways, and usually the plug will pull out with a little effort.

But it will eventually turn into a semi liquid glop in the bottle. Damned strong glue, though. Ya gotta take the bad with the good!

Posted by: boynsea at August 29, 2021 07:36 PM (cx155)

393 Dont let air into the bottle when you use it, squezze the air out before you cap it...

You are welcome.
