The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"You wonder why sellers choose the families that they choose or the individuals that they choose to purchase their homes, and I hope it’s not based on biases. However, in the end, these letters create a bias no matter what.” DJ Bowser

Quote II

What we are seeing is that the Biden administration just handed the mullahs of Iran – as well as the Chinese, the Russians, the North Koreans and the Turks -- yet another victory as they all cheer the US failure in Afghanistan and celebrate the takeover of Central Asia by terrorists. Dr. Majid Rafizadeh

Quote III

“You have to understand the father did not even bring this issue before the court. So, it’s the judge on his own and making this decision that you can’t see your child until you’re vaccinated,” Attorney Annette Fernholz

Quote IV

You just killed my son with a dementia-ridden piece of crap who doesn’t even know he’s in the White House. He still thinks he’s a senator.” Kathy McCollum, mother of 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Rylee McCollum KIA

Quote V

“We put everything on the line while you sat around getting paid to pretend to be working for the people. Cut the crap with the “wannabe tough guy” lines, nobody is trying to be tough – except you. Keep banging the war drums, advocating for red flag laws, and voting in massive COVID spending bills"Ian Smith, the co-owner of Atilis Gym, New Jersey

Quote VI

“I expected this day was coming. And Twitter can’t touch my Substack (in fact, it reportedly tried to buy Substack last year, but Substack fortunately said no).”Alex Berenson

Gun control for you and me. The Taliban not so much. The US donated quite the arsenal to the 7th century religious zealots.

The Taliban has been bragging and taking photos with the vast trove of weapons and gear they now possess thanks to Joe Biden, as you know. But the extent of the news arsenal has been hard to grasp. Until now.

Biden has created an army. He’s turned the Taliban into a national armed force with advanced weaponry, armor, vehicles, and aircraft. How extensive?

A day that ends in Y. RINO Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) blames Trump for Sunsettin' Joe's failures.

While appearing on Sunday’s edition of CNN’s “State of the Union,” Sen. Mitt Romney, RINO-Utah, blamed former President Trump for cowardly Joe Biden’s failure in Afghanistan.

“Should there be a U.S. military presence in the Kabul airport until every American citizen and legal permanent resident and Afghan SIV applicant is gone, even if that means service members staying for weeks and months? Of course, there’s this real possibility of American casualties,” Jake Tapper asked.

“Leaving Americans behind and leaving our Afghan friends behind, who worked with us, would put upon us and will put upon us a moral stain. This is the result of very ineffective decisions by the prior administration and the current administration,” Romney said.

One day the consensus is no one wants to go back to the office. The next day is everybody wants to go back.

SAN FRANCISCO — Before the pandemic, Roya Joseph’s days at the office were defined by interaction. She looked forward to casual conversations with co-workers, mentorship sessions with managers and periodic, freewheeling chats — known as “teatime” — in the office kitchen.

All that was swept away when Joseph, a water engineer for Black & Veatch, an engineering firm, was sent home from her Walnut Creek, California, office along with the rest of her colleagues as the coronavirus began spreading through the United States last year. She jumped at the opportunity to return when her office reopened to some employees in June.

But two weeks ago, the rug was pulled out from under her again. Black & Veatch shut its offices as virus cases rose nationwide, driven by the contagious delta variant.

“It’s depressing,” Joseph, 32, said. “I feel like we’re being pushed back to that isolation bubble. I feel like, mentally, I’m not ready to face that again.”

Working with dangerous animals can be dangerous? Who knew?

German police are investigating a leopard attack on a model who suffered severe injuries during a photoshoot, Germany's dpa news agency reported on Thursday morning.

The focus is on the 48-year-old owner of the leopard involved in the attack, one of two she keeps along with other animals at a compound in the town of Nebra in eastern Germany, dpa said.

The 36-year-old model received injuries on her head during Tuesday's attack and was taken by helicopter to a specialty clinic.

The animal owner was being investigated on suspicion of negligent bodily harm, according to dpa.

A public health officer visited the compound on Wednesday to check whether the animals were adequately kept and if the facility met regulatory standards, dpa said.

20 second orgasm? 2 charges and a Genius Award, 1st Runner-Up.

AUGUST 27--A woman arrested for masturbating with a vibrator on a Georgia beach told police that she did not think anyone witnessed her self-pleasure session “because it only took her 20 seconds to orgasm,” according to a police report.

Responding to a 5:30 PM report of a woman “performing a sexual act on the beach,” Tybee Island cops last month interviewed a witness who said the female suspect placed a towel on the sand and then opened her backpack and removed “what looked like a vibrator.”

The woman, the witness told police, began using the apparent vibrator to masturbate, adding that she “could hear her moaning.” After about five minutes, the woman gathered her belongings and departed.

The witness, cops noted, recorded the suspect’s actions. A review of the video showed the suspect--who was wearing a “one-piece green bikini--retrieve an unknown item from her backpack. The woman “then spreads her legs apart and puts both of her hands in between her legs,” police reported.

Saving the world through the voices of his mind. Yikes. Tonight's Genius Award Winner.

Law enforcement officers encountered a bizarre incident Wednesday morning as a Cookeville man led them on a two county pursuit from Dowelltown to Lebanon on Highway 70. What they learned was that the man, 39 year old Tyson Gilbert had severed his own penis and tossed it out the car window somewhere along the route either before or during the chase. Gilbert said he heard voices on his car radio telling him to commit the act in order to save the world.

Trooper Bobby Johnson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol was the first to come across Gilbert after spotting his Honda Accord parked partially in the roadway on Highway 70 at Dowelltown.

Breakthrough in the battle against Alzheimer's Disease? Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Clinical trials of a new precision, or functional medicine approach to targeting and reversing cognitive decline from Alzheimer’s has produced “unprecedented” and “far-reaching” results.

Called the MEND (metabolic enhancement for neurodegeneration) Protocol, it’s based on the oft-ignored, though universally understood preference, going all the way back to Hippocrates, for treating the cause—not the symptom—of a disease.

Developed by Dr. Dale Bredesen, an internationally renowned expert in neurodegenerative disease, it works to fix and fortify the underlying biochemical profile that gives rise to Alzheimer’s, rather than simply targeting, as pharmaceutical companies have tried to do, the tau protein called beta-amyloid that brings about the hallmarks of the disease.

Funny story about the younger of the 2 sons of Doof, who is nearly 18. First time I heard him drop an F bomb, he was 12. He played travel baseball and also played rec. Each rec team had 2 travel players. I was the coach of his rec team. One rec game, he was pitching, and I went for a mound visit because he was getting annoyed at several errors the fielder's were making. I went out to calm him down. I told him "you're a travel player, and these kids look up to you -- you're not setting a good example. If you don't get your attidue in check, I'm gonna pull you from the game.". He looked me dead in the eye and said "well if these kids could fucking field, I wouldn't be so annoyed."

I had to walk back to the bench quickly so he didn't see me laughing!!

179 Funny story about the younger of the 2 sons of Doof, who is nearly 18.

I was maybe 10 or 11, and was playing little league baseball. I was in center field and was using a new glove. I caught a huge fly ball and stopped a potential grand slam, then tossed the ball to the 2nd baseman who tagged a runner out. The coach was jumping up and down in celebration, and I yelled across the field " Thats some fucking glove". The coach burst out laughing.

----------

I typically see the term used to refer to swimsuits that stylistically look similar to a bikini, with a distinct bra and bikini bottom. But the two pieces are directly connected to each other in some fashion. One version uses straps to connect the two. Another version essentially takes a one-piece swimsuit, and removes most of the cloth in the middle, leaving a fully exposed midriff and back, but with minimal amounts of cloth running up the sides.

195 Pumps still have about half power in New Orleans ... lucky they did not get as much rain as expected. Some huge tower for power went down .. my friend in WestWego just said 6-8 weeks to repair.

And some big trees on soaked ground went down, big roots pulled up water lines ... so they have very low pressure on the water. And the sewage has to be pumped as well, so power outages are reducing that ability as well. ... a pretty big mess overall ... but nothing like Katrina.

There's a video game called 'Jurasic Park Evolution" that has you essentially building and running the infamous dinosaur park franchise across several islands. One of the things you need to do, of course, is send out expeditions to fossil fields to recover items of interest that might contain dinosaur DNA.

Coproliths are one of the things that sometimes get brought back.

To me it seems that the Biden Team is actually running enemy action against Americans in Afghanistan, as well as against America itself. ... They gave weapons and intel and our base of operations away to terrorists .. .it is astounding, the well planned malicious actions that are sabotaging our standing in the region ... giving up Bagram in the middle of the night .. a base which is improtant beyond whatever it means to Afghanistan itself. ... it looks like they are fighting for our enemies, very deliberately.

303 There were homes in DC that sold for $300,000 over asking. $100,000 over was common. Hundreds of buyers at open houses. People cashinig out 401 k's so they could make a cash offer, then taking out a mortgage and putting money back in 401k's. Buyers paying the full commission so not only paying their buyer's agent but also paying the sellers agent. So whatever the final price, add 6% additional.

Shit, I hope I have that problem. I just redid the entire house. Its move in mint. New HVAC, siding, garage door, entrance doors, windows, had all the hardwood floors sanded. Didn't really have to do most of it, but me and the wife felt we wanted to give it a nice send off.

Around here (central OH) - contracts are typically 5-7% over asking, no inspections and no remedies for any issues found after sale. Buyer to pay all realtor commissions. No contingent sales. Buyers to fork over the difference, if any, between the appraised value and the selling price.

It's crazy out there.

The holding company that owned Houston Lighting & Power also owned the cable company. They sold it to Time Warner for stock, which was restricted from sale for some period of time. Then the Time Warner stock had a run-up when they bought AOL, but the holding company had hedged their stock, so they had to book a $1.3 billion loss on the hedge but couldn't book the offsetting gain until the stock was actually sold. That was not good for the stockholders of the holding company, mostly insurance companies and little old ladies who bought 1 share a month and reinvested their dividends.

Well I'm assuming various scenarios for indirect fire were contemplated and planned for (unless the military is as incompetent as it might appear with respect to certain things). Cell phones are common in Afghanistan (and various other places with poor infrastructure) because it's easier to put cell towers all over the place than it is to run land lines out to the middle of nowhere. I remember at times reading about how the Taliban and their affiliates were actually going after cell towers (and pissing off the locals in the process due to interrupted phone service) because the locals would use their cell phones to call in and report sightings of jihadis.

The days of going to Sears or JC Penny to order items, waiting several days or more, then going back to the store to get them is only a dim memory. But it was routine. So was filling-out a paper order form, writing a check, and mailing them. And so was looking for a paper order form and hoping there was one in old catalog. Phone orders were much more convenient unless you ordered a long list of stuff. Ah, the good old days.

Life WAS simpler overall, and I always got what I wanted, from stores coast-to-coast and overseas. (I ordered a bunch of expensive history books from the UK in the mid-80's when the exchange rate was terrific.)

384 From Brietbart: According to a report from the Washington Post, as the Taliban began taking control of Afghanistan, senior U.S. military leaders met with Taliban political leader Abdul Ghani Baradar in Doha, Qatar, where an offer was made for the United States to have control of Kabul until all U.S. troops had withdrawn; the offer was declined.

---
So the greatest mind in foreign affairs in the last 50 years told the Taliban to go fuck themselves when he was offered to let the United States have complete control of Kabul until the US could extract everybody. And just like that we have 13 dead US service members with 15 more with life-changing injuries.

Every single second of this disaster belongs to Joe Biden and exactly nobody else but Joe Biden. And the mother fucker couldn't not stop looking at his watch today before the last casket was put in a truck.

And while there's probably enough info to reasonably conclude these unfit idiots indeed are responsible for most of the debacle, I don't find the WaPo account to have anything close to the info or detail to really change the picture very much.

We didn't have/didn't plan to send the kinds or quantities of forces needed to actually secure Kabul, which (as we're seeing) is teeming with bad actors like ISKP. If we'd scrambled to do so, having accepted the Taliban's "offer", good chance of much more action and casualties than the total will be here.

It's gonna come down to leaving Bagram, AND not having (if they didn't) a Worst Case S**t-Storm contingency plan to evacuate the mission and most known groupings of amcits using airlift to Bagram. And any planning for evacing dispersed amcits, and green carders, and selected local allies.

412 "Remember, the Katrina levee break was the day after the storm passed. When it happened, everyone was busy congratulating themselves on having dodged a bullet."

The early reporting came from the middle of New Orleans, and yeah, they (CNN) thought things were mostly OK. I recall watching the water pour OUT from NOLA East into the Industrial Canal ... it was reported as water topping the levee and flowing into neighborhoods.

Truth was the Ninth Ward and Chalmette ... all that was flooded immediately ... but everyone (except sheltered reporters) were busy saving lives. The levees broke (was it the next day?) a little later ... there were several breaks ... few people died from that ... but a lot of my old friends lost their homes then. some places, (like where Brian Williams was and lied about seeing bodies float by) were above sea level.

446 The days of going to Sears or JC Penny to order items, waiting several days or more, then going back to the store to get them is only a dim memory.

Back in the early 80s I wanted a specific battleship book that was out of print. The Dalton's or whatever chain bookstore took a paper request for it and put it in their system and some 6-8 months later they found one. It was the popular (by the standards of battleship books) Breyer one that covered all of them up to 1970 in great detail. Still have it.

448 During the tail end of the Jimmy Carter crap ola phase of life the only way I was able to buy a home was to assume the mortgage debt of the principal loan holder. They sold it to me on the assumption that I would be responsible. Fortunately I was for them. To the best of my knowledge those clauses do not exist anymore. At least they don't exist in a contract I'm willing to sign.
Posted by: LostInSpace at August 29, 2021 10:58 PM (USmG/)

I was actually taking about an assignability clause. Like Mr A contracts to buy the house but Mr B acually shows up at the closing to buy the house. Personally, as long as Mr.B's money is green, don't GAF. The clause, I think, did not relieve Mr A from his contract obligation to the seller

Hmm, that's interesting. Want to make it clear to Blanco that I'm not necessarily throwing shade on that tweet, but it's an extraordinary claim, so my default is to disbelieve in the absence of corroborating evidence. However, there was a Michael Yon tweet that also seems related to this where he seems to want to quite urgently want to get in touch with Maj Gen Donohue, so maybe there is actually some fire behind the smoke. Like I did say, we'll know soon enough if this tweet is true. I'm hoping it's just a miscommunication or exaggeration of the situation.

The Taliban has said it will ban music in public in Afghanistan because it is forbidden in Islam, despite the assurances given by the insurgent group that it will be more tolerant than it was two decades ago.

n an interview with The New York Times, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid laid out the group's plans to rule Afghanistan. From 1996 to 2001, music in public in the country was taboo, while the Taliban ruled the country.

"Music is forbidden in Islam...the only exception to the ban during the Taliban's original governance in Afghanistan was for some vocal religious pieces with no musical accompaniment," Mujahid said in quotes by the Times.

480 Well, made a little more progress in my dune buggy project. Measured the body. Measured the floor pan. Rinse and repeat. Rinse and repeat. The required amount of shortening depends upon which benchmarks you measure to. Finally settled on two, 14 and 1/4 inches, and 15 inches. Since the long-established figure (50 years!) is 14 and a half inches, and bracketed by those two measurements, I went with 14 and a half.

So I got 14.5" cut from the frame tunnel just after of the parking brake fixture. Only snag was some retaining straps for cable tubes spot-welded to the inside of the tunnel. I was able to locate the spot welds, tiny divots on the sheet metal, and drill them out from the outside. Success! I then went ahead, and cut the various cable guide tubes free from the rear section of frame. Throttle, clutch, and the two heater control tubes. The parking brake guide tubes look like they would be more easily freed at the front; one is already loose there. There is a lot of grease and muck on the inner floor of the tunnel, but zero rust. This is a 60 year-old floor pan!

Got to see a crop duster making passes over the adjacent quarter, making high-banked turns over my shop. Kewl!

487 The Taliban charm offensive, which I noted here when it started, will likely end in tears.

There will only be substantial direct confirmed info from a few places - Kabul, maybe Kandahar, probably Mazar-e-Sharif and Jalalabad (these two cuz proximity to outside world, political/ethnic hostility to the Talib).

So a savvy propaganda approach will rein things in for those places, somewhat. But word/info will get out. Ditto for killings/retribution against US partners/former regime types. Refugees escaping will have info, just as with Vietnam, Cambodia, and decades of China and the USSR and Soviet bloc.

Wonder if the younger, more savvy and int'l elements in leadership will have an open break with the others. The charm offensive is their idea. I'd say they hope to get diplomatic mileage out of it, they don't want the pariah status of the first time in power (their fathers and uncles).

You know, for a rig like a plow truck, that will rarely see the highway, you can make a surprisingly strong floor repair by getting 1/4" mesh hardware cloth, hand-forming it to the desired shape, and then using pop rivets or sheet metal screws with washers to attach it to sound metal bordering the rusted area. Then slather both sides with "kitty hair" long-fiber patching compound. It sets up rock hard.

511 You know, for a rig like a plow truck, that will rarely see the highway, you can make a surprisingly strong floor repair by getting 1/4" mesh hardware cloth, hand-forming it to the desired shape, and then using pop rivets or sheet metal screws with washers to attach it to sound metal bordering the rusted area. Then slather both sides with "kitty hair" long-fiber patching compound. It sets up rock hard.

512 azjaeger, that book sounds fantastic. Good score. Was of course just joshing about the 1970 thing - and, of course, there were the Iowa re-activations.

Was lucky to spend half a day on the Iowa when she was active (in port, Norfolk). VIP tour, fair amount of time with the CO, including lunch in the wardroom on the nice china.

Was very very definitely *not* a "V" VIP, but as Hill staff had a one-star little card at my place for lunch (committee staff directors on the Hill have 3-star protocol rank - then again they often have real $$ power).

Need to get up to LA and visit her again. The story about the hit on turret 3 (?) is one of my favorites. The scar is a very small, don't think they know what it was, assumed to be a Japanese 6" projectile, something like that. Didn't know they'd been hit (!), torn up teak deck next morning was the first clue. Don't make 'em like that no more.

Don't knock unless you've tried it. With kitty hair slathered on both sides, that flimsy hardware cloth takes on properties like reinforced concrete. I doubt it would stop a bullet, but it's watertight, and won't give if you stand on it.

They decided to stay because of Covid-19 fears. Her mother was particularly fearful of catching Covid-19 if they fled to a state like Texas.

"She didn't want to evacuate," Cashman said. "We'd have to go to grocery stores and go out, and there's no mask mandates. I mean, it would be really unsafe. We're all vaccinated, but still."

520 azjaeger, you might be right - but I think several million $ was the price of an F-4U last time I checked (flyable).

Most depressing thing about Paul Allen is it appears whoever's in charge of the estate (daughter?) apparently has no interest in continuing the work of the ship, the R/V Petrel, which has been stellar in locating and documenting WWII sunken ships.

Literally the best use of billionaire bucks in decades. Absolutely and precisely the main thing I'd fund if I had the $$$. That, and similar documentation/preservation efforts.

Though to what end wouldn't be clear. The generations inheriting the miracles of WWII victory and the post-war period are largely unaware of them, and their progeny (or a material part thereof) seem fanatically bent on erasing not just the history but the actual progress it saw.

I suspect that the reason Americans are being turned away is that the remaining flights going out are full. I don't know that, but at some point if they are going to be out by the 31st they have to stop loading planes with evacuees and start loading planes with soldiers and Marines. If that's true, the artificial deadline of the 31st is the culprit.

North Korea appears to have restarted the operation of its main nuclear reactor used to produce weapons fuels, the UN atomic agency said, as the North openly threatens to enlarge its nuclear arsenal amid long-dormant nuclear diplomacy with the United States.

The annual report by the International Atomic Energy Agency refers to a 5-megawatt reactor at the North's main nuclear complex in Yongbyon, north of Pyongyang. The reactor produces plutonium, one of the two key ingredients used to build nuclear weapons along with highly enriched uranium.

What was brilliant about those radios especially to a teenager is I could be anywhere at any time listening to the radio. The only cost was a few batteries which died quickly. I remember driving in the back of a 65 Ford station wagon listening to Sandy Koufax slaying opponents or the Indianapolis 500. We now live in a world of ubiquitous communications while at that time in the past I was in a place where such communication while on the move was something akin to Black magic.

Bill Gates probably doesn't do what he does out of malice, he just got consumed by his own mystique.

You're posing some very existential questions about these personalities. My experience having lived in the Redmond area during that period is they had a profound sense of civic responsibility. When I worked for Microsoft at the tail end of Bill Gates years we were expected to contribute to the community. Nobody ever demanded that of you but it was really clear you had to give something back in return for the great privilege to work for Microsoft. Microsoft gets all kind of crap over the years for their ethics. In some cases this is quite fair but really where it matters they're one of the most ethical corporations I've ever worked for. Now I'm ready to be roasted.

This is something I never did and that leaves me at a loss at times how to speak with credibility about the last week's events. With that caveat out of the way, the events of the last week have ripped my heart to pieces. I keep iterating over all the jackass is in this country, the 20 somethings, that pitch fits over not having their pronouns respected while at the same time we send exactly the same 20 somethings to a a place like Kabul where they end up getting blown to pieces. If I'm hurting this bad, I can't even imagine where that leaves you. For what meaningless words are worth, I care.

594 Good evening Horde, question for you all. Family is going on about how much the CA recall is going to cost. I googled it to see what the actual cost is (and why) and just got a bunch of links that are basically complaining about it. As I don't trust most of what I read, does anyone have any links about the recall that might actually break it down without a leftist spin?

Thanks in advance!
Posted by: Where're my ping pong balls? at August 29, 2021 09:14 PM (m3XFr)

Think the CA voter guide and/or the materials that came with the ballot listed the official cost estimate. Don't think it was broken down at all though.

The only reason you're hearing about costs is because Newsom made the cost the top line of his Vote No argument. In reality, CA has elections nearly every year anyway and the lefties always claimed to love it "democracy in action" and whatnot.

If they've suddenly taken an interest in responsible fiscal choices with taxpayer money, you should ask them how many bond measures they've actually voted against. Even when a municipal sewer trunk extension gets voted down, they just throw it right back on the ballot year after year until it finally gets a yes.

595 594 Good evening Horde, question for you all. Family is going on about how much the CA recall is going to cost.

If you are happy with the governance the cost are extraordinary justified. If you are extraordinarily dissatisfied with the governance the costs will always be far less than what you're oppressor makes you pay.

632 The days of going to Sears or JC Penny to order items, waiting several days or more, then going back to the store to get them is only a dim memory. But it was routine. So was filling-out a paper order form, writing a check, and mailing them. And so was looking for a paper order form and hoping there was one in old catalog. Phone orders were much more convenient unless you ordered a long list of stuff. Ah, the good old days.

Just after I left Thule, I heard a story that the base was updating the kitchen in one of the officer barracks. Somehow the order to Sears got doubled. So they replaced the kitchen in the Danish Liaison Officer's quarters with the extra mid grade Kenmore appliances. I expect his wife was pleased (IIRC, it was an accompanied tour for the Danish Navy).
