Soylent ONT Is People!

You people. You fun, wonderful Morons who make the nights fun. Ignore the help wanted sign over on CBD's food thread:

It's a good question. How do you stand when you're just standing around. I sometimes stand hands on hips, but more often than not I'm an arm crosser. How about you?

What do you call a parody that is indistinguishable from reality?

Anyone watch Practical Jokers? I do, sometimes, if I'm just channel surfing. The guys seem to genuinely like each other and lots of the gags are genuinely funny. However, I can't seem to watch more than maybe 2 episodes at a time before it starts wearing thin.

When I was in high school, a buddy of mine had a garage punk band they named Two Guns Each. They never got beyond playing in his basement, and I haven't thought of that in over 30 years, but this clip reminded me of that band.

Yeah, I'm pretty skeptical too. That image of Lincoln doesn't really track with eyewitness descriptions of his last hours, and there was someone with him all the time after he was shot, so it's hard to believe anyone would have had the opportunity to snap a picture, even if it didn't take like 20 minutes.

189 Ron Weasley saying fuck suppression.

One Summer I took my 5 year old son to Seattle for a grand day out. Little did I know it was Gay Day everywhere in Seattle. Eventually, after many deflected questions, we landed at a coffee shop not quite atop of Cap Hill. Shortly there after came the lesbian marching band with black tape over their tits. I quietly redirected said youth's attention.

Fast forward 20 years. This is the only thing my, now asshole kid, remembers from that summer. I am honored by this outcome. Suppression always owns now and never the future.

215 By the way, the bed and room that Lincoln passed away in was so tiny that I doubt that any could have set up a camera that they would need in 1865 for that shot. I was in it - the bed was about a foot and a half from a door way in the back of the house - upstairs. You'd have to climb the stairs with the photo equipment from the day and set up in a space barely big enough for the doctors to be in, much less those large cameras...

Its possible that the doctors requested a death photo, as a coroner from that time might have required it, but
it would have been tough to get. According to the historian we went with on the tour, they actually dug into Lincolns skull using instruments of the time in order to try and remove the bullet and relieve the pressure, unsuccessfully...the blood involved in that procedure would have left the room a mess regardless.

216 Trump:
As one nation, America mourns the loss of our brave and brilliant American service members in savage and barbaric terrorist attack in Afghanistan.

These noble American warriors laid down their lives in the line of duty. They sacrificed themselves for the country that they loved, racing against time to rescue their fellow citizens from harm's way. They died as American Heroes, and our nation will honor their memory forever. I want to express my deepest condolences to the families of those we have lost. Today, all Americans grieve alongside you. Together, we also pray that God will heal the other courageous American service members who were wounded in this heinous attack.

In addition, our hearts are with the families of all the innocent civilians who died, and with the many men, women, and children who were terribly injured in this act of evil. This tragedy should never have taken place. It should never have happened, and it would not have happened if I were your President.

Over the past few weeks, I know that many Americans have felt profound sorrow and even pain watching the events taking place in Afghanistan, and perhaps none more so than the veterans of that 20-year war.

Many of them answered the call proudly and without hesitation after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. Every American who served in Afghanistan has made tremendous sacrifices for our country.

On behalf of your fellow citizens, I want you to know that those sacrifices were not made in vain. We know what you did. We know how brave you were, and we thank you. We salute you and we honor you for all time. I hope that every American will join me in continuing to pray for the safe return of all U.S. citizens and soldiers from Afghanistan in the coming days. Thank you, God bless you, and God bless America.

The story goes, Marie Antoinette's hubby (I forget which one he is) was physically deformed, that it was painful for him, and that's why it took like 7 years for them to have a baby.

But then they say he spent lots of time with his mistress. So which is it? Was he physically incapable, or a typical royal? And I wouldn't be shocked if it turned out his heirs had some little Swede in them.

273 @202 It's like the way European royals used to marry each other for political reasons, bang enough to produce an heir, then spend the rest of their lives with their sidepieces.

---------

From what I've heard, the fall-out from this in the United Kingdom caused the (in public, at any rate) Victorian "prudishness". The story goes that all of the heirs of the reigning monarch died, leaving the extended royal family with no young heirs. The remaining male members of the extended family were ordered to ditch their mistresses, marry a respectable woman, and produce a non-bastard royal heir.

Victoria was the result. And the enforced "respectability" at the top apparently worked its way into the rest of the country, causing the notorious public Victorian prudishness.

This much, at least, is true.

She was the only daughter of George III's fourth son. The three older ones failed to produce legitimate heirs.

There was also a fourth son who became King of Hanover (the rules of succession in Hanover did not allow female monarchs).

So George III, at least, did not fail to produce heirs. His sons fell down on the job rather badly.

Yeah, these took time to set up - note the extended and grotesque bloating of the dead bodies photographed in Pennsylvania, a result of time involved to setup and the heat. All are staged and taken at the usual distance that a standard daguerreotype camera would have needed - regardless of the development process (silver or tin type).

I rather doubt that the supposed photograph of Lincoln in that very tiny bedroom strewn with blood and mess, and also occupied by doctors and WH staff would have allowed for such a photo - but you just don't know...

------------

Victoria was the reigning monarch (her husband was the consort), which would have required her to be born into the royal line. Not every British monarch spoke English all that well. George I and II hadn't particularly cared about it (they'd been focused on their German holdings instead). But that ended with the king we know best here in the US, George III. Victoria was a couple of generations later.

it would have been tough to get. According to the historian we went with on the tour, they actually dug into Lincolns skull using instruments of the time in order to try and remove the bullet and relieve the pressure, unsuccessfully...the blood involved in that procedure would have left the room a mess regardless.

No one had a harder time with that than Mark Twain, who absolutely detested Charles Dickens like no other...he complained that Dickens found Christmas a tradition not as religious event but as a celebration of his fealty to the Monarchy of the time. Twain was the ultimate misanthrope...

the second part of that has some truth to it. I know many disagree, but slavery was the key issue. If you remove slavery, there would not have been a war. But calling it the war of White Privilege to me is way too modernist and ahistorical.

The Union states that stayed loyal to the USA were 98.8 percent white. They didn't fight to change that. They were pissed of at the Confederates for putting the union itself at risk. For sure many didn't like slavery, many were fired up about it. But that is not what caused the war. There were two sides, and they did not have the same reasons for fighting. Even within those sides there were many reasons.

410 @383 As kings go, George III wasn't particularly bad. Maybe a bit too distant from the affairs of his kingdom,

------------

For George III, it was the exact opposite. His father and grandfather had primarily focused on Hanover, and ignored the British Isles. George III took the throne, and decided to focus on the English-speaking holdings instead. Parliament had been used to more or less doing its own thing, and unsurprisingly wasn't too happy when the ruler of the United Kingdom started trying to exercise some royal authority. This caused some friction.

It also resulted in cleaning up some pretty noteworthy loopholes in the laws as the king exploited those loopholes, and Parliament was forced to shut them down in order to block his moves.

George III also happened to take the throne during the Seven Years War. We call the local part of it the French and Indian War. George III decided that the colonies should start paying money for the costs that the treasury had incurred defending them, but didn't give the colonists (who had largely been acting semi-independently until then) any say in the matter. And the rest is history.

I've suggested similar in the past. I don't think that the noble titles would have been necessary. But I'm of the opinion that if the colonists had been allowed to elect MPs, the war might have not happened.

I suggested that once on the forum of a company that happens to be located in England, and the locals noted that no colony had representatives in Parliament. I countered by noting the rather large size of the Thirteen Colonies in comparison to the other British overseas holdings of the era. Another commenter there agreed that there was some merit to that argument, as just a few decades later New York was the largest English-speaking city in the world.

Dad worked on the base newspaper on Fort Myers (VA) in the 50's and it got known that the "last surviving Confederate Veteran" in Virginia was upset because he didn't have a uniform to be buried in. According to dad the ladies in the office got a replica tunic based on R.E. Lee's tunic run up and they went down to interview him. Dad got the directions and the advice to bring along a fifth of peach brandy.
They presented him the tunic and trousers, which he modeled in his wheel chair, the photographer got the pic, and he told a short tale about how he had entered as a drummer boy
As they left back to the base he asked a couple of locals about the old gentleman, and Dad said he was told that to get a pension all you had to do was get two old soldiers to vouch for you and have it approved. They figured the old gentleman was in his 80's

A young officer during the French and Indian war who was particularly unimpressive was one George Washington. However, the fact that he had significant experience in war and knew British tactics help lead to his military command of the Army of the Revolution. He also was a significant Virginian land owner, and that counted for a lot.

The British monarchy made a ton of mistakes in the 1760's that lead up to them losing the colonies, most notably the arrogance of Parliament and King George III. They needed only to bend in the slightest and we'd be a British commonwealth to this day...but they wouldn't hear of it. It offended their sense of control and their notion that the American Colonialists were...deplorable? Sounds familiar.

In the states that of the North, the states that compromised "The Union" the demographics were 98.8 percent White. I know that one as a fact. Most blacks lived around New Jersey and New York.

The CSA had a much higher percentage of black people than ten percent. It was about 5mm to 3mm, or 5.5mm to 3.5 mm. But the percentage is pretty clear.

one odd thing, pretty much the richest state if you counted property wealth was Mississippi. Those guys had a lot to lose, and well, as we have seen, they did.

431 The big issue with the Civil War is there were two sides. You can't claim one reason for taking up arms when there are two sides coming from two different mindsets. And also of course, there were many variations within the sides.

I did say that slavery was the key factor, the one thing that if you removed it, would have likely prevented war. Some say it was not a factor. I get that, i know that has been passed on over the decades. And it is true many fought for other reasons. But I don't buy it when people say slavery didn't cause the war. I say read on, just study it more.

Woolson claimed to be born in 1847, but that appears to be just what he told the Army in an effort to get regular duty, but its since been shown in census records he was actually born in 1850. He never saw action and was discharged in late 1865.

498 @479 The USA said "On to Richmond, they were wrong about that".

---------

Well, that particular issue was more a matter of the generals involved than anything else. The Union was cursed with a succession of miserable generals in command of the Army of the Potomac.

On the other hand, losing Richmond early on probably wouldn't have been as bad for the CSA as losing DC would have been for the Union. The resulting humiliation for the Union might have caused foreign powers to take the CSA more seriously. And getting into the deep south - as Sherman did - where a second capitol would have been located wouldn't have been possible any sooner than Sherman did it.

this a a great example of where the Union (I call them the USA) had powers the CSA never had. No doubt losing Washington DC would have been worse in some ways. But they knew that. That is why they put a clamp down on MD that could never be recovered from. MD was pro CSA, Baltimore more than any other place is that can even be imagined. But the USA put a clamp down so hard that MD never had a choice.

Same with Northern Virginia. They took Alexandria and most of Fairfax and other counties because they simply had to do it. They had no interest in being surrounded. They took Lee's home at Arlington because they could.

In the end the CSA did very well from a military perspective. They never thought they would take over the North or even Washington DC. The plan was to inflict so much pain that the voting populace said enough, F them, to Hell with them. The high school history books don't teach this, but it almost happened three times. The CSA leaders, mainly Lee, tried their gambit and it failed.

---------

Yes, and no.

What happened to the Army of the Potomac - the largest Union army - over and over again was pretty brutal. But at the same time that Lee was exposing the incompetence of the Union generals commanding the most important Union army, Grant was inexorably working his way down the Mississippi.

In many respects, what Grant was doing was more important than what the Army of the Potomac consistently failed to do. The whole point of both the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia was to protect that army's own capitol, and threaten the enemy's capitol. Aside from that, there wasn't much immediate threat there. Grant, on the other hand, was tearing the Confederacy in half. And when he was finished, Sherman was in prime position to start his March to the Sea.

523 What were the quantities of materiel and vehicles *planned* to be left, when the US pulled out in good order, as was the plan/assumption? This would have been for the Afghan army that evaporated in June/July*, leading to this situation. I'd have guessed most of it, since by this point, with withdrawal planned initially for back in May and the draw-down the main activity since February of last year, you'd be well along with the exercise.

But it's hard to imagine we planned to leave the Afghans with 75K vehicles. I'd guess less than half that.

With no Congress and no press, more/less, we may never know.

* it wasn't one unbroken and uniform story, far from it - there was bitter fighting in some places, the collapse gained momentum when it became a self-reinforcing cascade, and traditional/practical dynamics kicked in - $$$, go with a winner, avoid retribution, your cousin guarantees you safety and a new gig under the new management

It is good info junior. I always want to learn here, and everything I have learned about history is because I have always been open to learn. I thing some miss that key feature.

Of course taking Washington DC would have made a difference. But it was never going to happen. The best chance was First Manassas but even that was a pipe dream. You can't make green troops veterans simply by wishing that were the case.

When Lee outmaneuvered the Army of the Potomac (again) by stealing a march on them to Gettysburg, Hooker told Lincoln he could take Richmond. Lincoln was very clear about this one. The goal was Lee's army, not some city. Lee's Army was the Confederacy a that point, the Southerners thought so, and the Yankees though so.

no doubt taking a capital city is a big deal, I am not denying that. But it is not a game or Risk. Lee's Army is what kept Confederate hopes alive, and nothing else.

He won't fire anyone because he thinks it will look bad politically. Lincoln didn't give a shit about that, he knew his only charge was victory.

-------------

McClellan needs no mention, of course. Burnside was apparently a decent quartermaster, but even he knew that he had no business leading troops. Hooker was apparently a good subordinate, but froze up when he was put in charge. Meade was put in charge for Gettysburg, where he pulled off a win. But Grant was effectively calling the shots afterwards, so it's difficult to say how good Meade might have been compared to the earlier generals.

Lincoln would fire generals when he could. But Lincoln was also unable to fire some generals due to political reasons. One in particular, General Butler - who commanded the Army of the James, was left in place even though he was widely regarded as incompetent. He wasn't removed until after the 1864 election, when politics was no longer a concern.

I didn't say they would not fight in the North, I said they had no plans to take over the North. Those are two very different things. I respect Sherman for his abilities. Afghanistan's not really a place that we'd want to go back to. As Rhomboid noted, it's land-locked. So we don't have ocean access. And we're not chummy with any of Afghanistan's neighbors (one - Iran - is out and out hostile; three are in Putin's sphere; the last - Pakistan - isn't exactly trustworthy, and likes the Taliban more than us), so supply lines are always somewhat of a concern.

1. I had that Jesus "honor thy father and mother" switchplate in my house when I was a child. I never, ever thought of it that way.

2. I'm really doubtful about that Lincoln photo. Considering the bulky equipment of those days and the extremely long exposure time, the photo could only have been taken either when Lincoln was dying (in which case the room was full of people and the photo would be blurry from his breathing) or after his death, and there is no way Edwin Stanton would have left the body alone for the length of time it would have taken to get the shot. So color me skeptical.

Must I say it? As if Jesus was "aroused." Let's leave it at that.

And speaking of the Conqueror, by the time of his death, he was grossly fat. He died after his horse shied and he was thrown against the pommel (some sort of internal injury, I suppose). And when he was placed in his coffin, he was too fat for the lid to be closed. The chronicles tell us that, as the monks tried to close the lid, William's gut exploded and scattered purulent, disgusting liquid over people and filling the church with an unendurable stench.

It never occurred to him to reprobates of community would sexuality it, and when I pointed out the mockery online, he still didn't understand what I was talking about. So I had to explain further. Rather awkward conversation.

I gained the ultimate respect for him that day, the fact that he was oblivious to it showed me just how pure a heart he has.

Their innate immune systems haven't had much training, which is necessary to get them to adulthood and learn said immune system how to behave. So, RSV (which is something that can play havoc with chillins, unlike Coof) is running amok, because of our stupid public "health" policies.

a lot of people are good people in their own minds. They will rationalize anything. Those that had good parents are very lucky people. Even that doesn't mean everything is cheery. But no doubt it helps, no doubt it is a leg up in this world.

I know people who are so selfish they won't focus on their kids, they will focus on themselves. The same thing that likely messed them up, they will pass down. Others look at the mistakes of their parents and do the exact opposite. i think that group is pretty small, but that is the group we need to believe in.

In relative terms, first cousin humping looks bad in terms of genetic problems. However, in absolute terms, it ain't so bad. Now, what gets you with inbreeding, is successive inbreeding. That is, cousin humps cousin. Then their offspring inbreed, and so on again.

A few cycles of that, and you degenerate quickly. But one offs aren't that bad. Just don't compound it.

There's a common level of "consanguinity". That is, in given area, what's the average level someone is related to another random stranger. IIRC, it's about 3rd-4th cousin level.

It turns out, for genetic purposes there is an optimum "consanguinity" for breeding purposes. To close, and things go south, but too far apart, and things go south as well. I want to say it's about 4th cousin level, but I'm not sure.

RSV causes bronchiolitis and croup. The treatment has always been Tylenol and taking the kid into a small bathroom and running hot water to make the room steamy. Hot water vaporizers work too. Now parents are panicking and rushing kids to the ER, and doctors are admitting them to cold, dry, scary and germy hospitals. And hot water vaporizers can cause burns if the kid dumps one on its head, so they are deemed too dangerous to have in the house.

First of all, flu shots are not that dangerous. And they induce sterilizing immunity for the strains they target. Note the part about strains they target. Their effectiveness is not that hot because of the variation in guesses about what strains are targeted.

There was a recent paper, one of the authors of which was from Clempson, my alma mater, looking at UK which found no effect of the flu shots on hospitalization and death rates from the flu.

Meta analysis of all studies produces a confidence interval that goes through zero. IOW, there could be anything from zero to a small positive effect of the flu vaccines.

But, the flu vaccines ain't dangerous. Oh, they kill a few every year from allergic reactions, but just some tiny fraction.

Also, there is some evidence mounting of an OAS with successive flu shots over the years. OAS = original antigenic sin, something I've learned about reading people who know their asses from holes in the ground and about all this coof-related stuff.

OAS has to do with successive "priming" of your immune system against antigens that are very close together. Your immune system tends to remember the old versions and not change to exactly match the new antigens.

So, there is some evidence that if you get successive flu shots every year for years on year, that OAS effect keeps your immune system from shifting to the new targeted strains properly.

So, efficacy of the response to the latest and greatest flu shot may wane over time.

Well, as I was talking to my pards earlier this evening, another friend and I were sorta kinda working on a grand strategic ACW game that would have involved the politics of the war. Say that generals had political ratings that forced you to give them important commands, like B. F. Butler, say. They'd be hard to get rid of and promoting other generals in their place, until they'd reach a certain status, would be difficult.

Me, and for me, I've decided from that latest study and the meta analysis and OAS stuff, that I'm not gonna bother with flu shots from now one unless and until some really bad flu might come along.

I've never had the flu since my early 20s. I've been getting flu shots every year since my late 30s. But, no more.

Funny you mention that. I was arguing that with my dear Miley just the other day. I said well, they may be useless, but they're not dangerous. She said I might to stop my parents from getting the flu shots 'cause they might try to sneak in the mRNA Coof shit in em. I said that would be a criminal act far beyond anything I could imagine anyone would try.

She gave me a look. What do you know now? And you still say that? My dear Miley may have a point, I must say.

I would recommend as the best single-volume history of the ACW McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom". Anything by Catton cannot go wrong. Gordon Rhea's four-volume study of the Overland Campaign is another good set. Anything by Stephen Sears is a good bet. Also, Fishel's "The Secret War for the Union" about the intelligence side of the war (and his conclusions about the Pinkertons and Little Mac may bring you up short).

Posted by: Captain Obvious, Laird o' the Sea at August 28, 2021 02:18 AM (LBiAf)

653 it is crazy how much politics played a part in that war. The Union army, the US Army, was very conservative politically. Back then it mean the highest ranks were mostly Democrats. Lincoln made sure enough Republicans got commands, and many of them were disdained at least in the AOP.

One thing that has always stood out to me is soldiers on both sides hated a general who was a political or religious zealot, that was bad at his job. They didn't care what your views were, they only cared if you used them properly and did not waste them in battle.

671 I am reading a book on Lee's last years right now. He didn't write much about those times, and he didn't last very long. That is why anyone who can gleam anything from them is doing a service to history.

yeah, that has it's own history. I am always open to learn, that is always the case. I have changed my views over the years but only because I have been convinced about what is the true history. I personally think Lee was as important during the war as he was made after the war. Sure some made him "The Marble Man", but that does not change the reality of his importance to his army and to the nation.

Today people fight over Lee that don't know anything about him or what he meant to this country. I don't say that lightly, it is not for me to tell people what to think. But I agree the Lost Cause was a thing, and it is likely the people who tried to control the history were the wrong people. Just like today, we have the wrong people trying to control history. Just my opinion here.

675 I saw a conservative today on a famous conservative site compare what happened the other day to Little Big Horn and Lee at Gettysburg. I think the guy meant well and he is likely quite educated. But I know he knows nothing about Lee and Gettysburg.

I don't call out people trying to do a gotcha because I studied something more. But that one bothered me. I know you focus on the West and for sure that is where the war was won. But what people think about Gettysburg and Pickett's charge astounds me.

Posted by: Quint at August 28, 2021 02:55 AM (/i32d)

676 the key about Pickett's Charge is Lee made a mistake. That happens in war all the time. Lee was let down by all three of his corps commanders. That is a rare event when all of your most trusted men let you down. He was also in ill health, that is a fact.

People say he was crazy to command a frontal assault, but his army did several of those and won during that war. The USA did frontal assaults and won too.

The key to it is Lee moved on, he made one of the greatest retrograde movements in history the next day. Those tactics are still studied in war schools to this day.

The Overland campaign didn't start until almost a year later as I recall. But so many think Lee and Pickett's Charge lost the war. Hell, if anything, the surrender of Vicksburg the next day lost the war.

But the USA lost more men after Gettysburg than before it. I am not sure what other number can make this more clear. Pickett's Charge happened, and then they moved on. We still study it because it is interesting, they didn't have the time to worry about it because other issues were at hand.

Wey-ull, I actually am better versed in the East than I am the West. My pards in the Compuserve Civil War forum, back in the day, would jokingly say that the War was won in the West, after four years of heavy skirmishing in the East.

But in all seriousness, the beginning of the end of the war was Grant being given overall command and, especially, his friend Sherman given command in the southeast, that a coordinated effort could effect the final end of the war.

--------------
Lee believed that the fighting was so heavy on the flanks that the Federal center must be weak. That was his thinking at the time. He didn't know that Sixth Corps was up and ready to reinforce any place in the line.

The most haunting line I know from the ACW is in Longstreet's recollection of the start of the assault on July 3: "The men advanced with an elastic step, their eyes alight with hope."

no smoke blowing, but when I typed that I knew I went wrong lol. You know more about the West than I do, that is what I meant to say.

I agree about Grant and Sherman. Sherman always said he could never function without Grant and I believe that. I hold Grant in the highest esteem. It sucks that to many he is a punchline. To be honest, over the last hundred years, Lee has been more revered North and South.

Lee has been on five USA postage stamps. Lee's home at Arlington is a national shrine. I recall an interesting book about a liberal literature teacher at West Point around the time of 9/11. She was astounded the the cadets only wanted to learn about Lee. If you want the name of the book, I will pass it on.

681 The Civil War is the most important event in our history. It was the event that changed this country and impacted lives and memories more than any other event. Today most want to forget it. If the cost is people coming together, even a history lover like I would say it is wort it. The reality is destroying history is making things worse. So many Americans have no belief in America. While the rest of the world dreams of coming here, the people born and raised here think "meh".

I am grieved to have to say that we here in Oregon have had to give up the only reenactment that we were to have this year. Clatsop County Fairgrounds reports that, due to a blocked tide gate, we are flooded out of the place we were to be on Labor Day weekend. We were to host, among other people, Curt Fields, who is the premier U. S. Grant reenactor in the country. To say this is a tragedy is, for me, to understate the issue. I met Curt two years ago when he came out here, and a finder reenactor, who knows his stuff, there can never be.

Longstreet was a very able General. He was slow to act on day 2 and very reluctant on day 3. He was right about Picketts Charge, there is no doubt about that. But the problem is extrapolating from that. He was a poor army leader, he was best at corps command. When he got into politics it went poorly.

We both know Longstreet was never given his due. But I know for sure he was not a better leader than Lee, in fact, he was much worse and everyone who knew the two people would say that.

Posted by: Quint at August 28, 2021 03:24 AM (/i32d)

684 Jackson is one many Southerners pine about. A great battlefield commander, but no way could he command an army. Hell, he made Sherman seem placid. Jackson could never command a major army because he was too busy charging his subordinates with dereliction of duty.

Longstreet was an excellent subordinate. None better. He would hit your as hard as he possibly could, given the opportunity. I've run the Peach Orchard/Little

Southernors always pine about if Jackson were in command at Gettysburg in place of Ewell. It is funny, A.P. Hill gets a USA fort but not Ewelll that I recall. Hill did next to nothing at Gettysburg.. The theory is he had a major disease, the social kind.

They pine about Jackson and I see what they are getting at. The movie Gettysburg and the much greater book "The Killer Angels" gets at that.

but Jackson was a hot head. He was charging his own men with insubordination while going into battle. The same reason General Garnet rode a horse though he knew he would be killed. He was charged as a coward and that stain in the Confederacy was the worst one possible. Garnet died to prove what everyone knew was false, was untrue.

Posted by: Quint at August 28, 2021 04:26 AM (/i32d)

690 I am not anti Jackson. Just like I am not anti Longstreet. But Lee was a different kind of General.

It is the same reason people love Patton but think less of Eisenhower. They don't understand THe Peter Principle. Lee was to Jackson as Eisenhower was to Patton. Same with Grant and Sherman. Sheridan yes, same thing goes., but I will never love Sheridan.
