The Saturday Night Joke

The Sierra Club and the U.S. Forest Service were presenting an alternative to the Wyoming ranchers for controlling the coyote population. It seems that after years of the ranchers using the tried-and-true method of shooting or trapping the predators, the Sierra Club had a "more humane" solution to this issue. What they were proposing was for the animals to be captured alive. The males would then be castrated and let loose again.

This was ACTUALLY proposed by the Sierra Club and by the U.S. Forest Service .

All of the ranchers thought about this amazing idea for a couple of minutes.

Finally an old fellow wearing a big cowboy hat in the back of the conference room stood up, tipped his hat back and said:

"Son, I don't think you understand our problem here... these coyotes ain't fuckin' our sheep... they're eatin' them!"

The meeting never really got back to order. (H/T Legally Sufficient)

Not only is it the center of the age long debate sandwich vs. not a sandwich, ketchup vs. no ketchup, The hotdog will shorten your life span.

Eating 1 hot dog takes 35 minutes off life, study suggests

Researchers released a nutritional index this week aiming to inform guidelines and help Americans achieve healthier and more environmentally stable diets. The index ranked foods by minutes gained or lost off healthy life per serving, with processed meats and sugary drinks among the biggest offenders.

Findings included over 5,000 foods in the US diet classified by health burden and environmental impacts.

“We use the results to inform marginal dietary substitutions, which are realistic and feasible,” authors wrote. “We find that small, targeted, food-level substitutions can achieve compelling nutritional benefits and environmental impact reductions.”

The foods studied ranged from 74 minutes lost to 80 minutes gained per serving. Sugary drinks, hot dogs, burgers and breakfast sandwiches were linked with most minutes of healthy life lost, whereas fruits, non-starchy and mixed vegetables, ready-to-eat cereals and cooked grains were associated with the largest gains.

More specifically, researchers found that consuming one 85-gram serving of chicken wings translated to 3.3 minutes of life lost, owing to sodium and harmful trans fatty acids, while a beef hot dog on a bun resulted in some 36 minutes lost “largely due to the detrimental effect of processed meat,” study authors wrote. What’s more, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were associated with an increase of 33 minutes.

I suspect the Twitter Warriors will be hashing this issue out for weeks.

All you can eat KFC. All you can drink booze. Morons of Japan rejoice!

KFC has just opened an all you can eat buffet and people are raving about it! This one of a kind KFC is located in Tokyo, Japan, and it is any KFC lovers paradise. For several years now, this giant restaurant chain has been exploring the idea at select locations around the world by test running temporary all-you-can-eat buffets. Tokyo happens to be the first city in the world to receive a permanent KFC buffet. The lucky residents of this city waited in preposterously long lines on opening week to get a taste of this juicy chicken. These long lines were to be expected though based on the huge amount of patrons KFC has in Japan. According to Japanese news agency Nari Nari, KFC is the fourth most popular fast food restaurant in the county!

IF you want to be a Greek god in the bedroom, follow the Mediterranean diet.

For years it has been hailed as the healthiest lifestyle.

Secondly: When in the great outdoors, watch out for these 12 problem insects.

Everything in nature has a place in the great tapestry of life—except ticks, which should be killed whenever and wherever they’re found. This is because ticks can infect us with a variety of pathogens: bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. And an individual tick can carry a bunch of different pathogens, making diagnosis and treatment more than a bit problematic. Our understanding of tick-borne diseases is still in its infancy. There are 16 such diseases, four of which have been discovered in the last seven years. Lyme gets the most attention, for good reason, but the deadliest is Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, which has a case-fatality rate of 30 percent in certain untreated patients. Even with treatment, case-fatality rates of 4 percent have been reported. Survivors can be left with lifelong complications. Incidentally, don’t be distracted by the name. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is most prevalent in North Carolina, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri. Its symptoms may look like other tick diseases—fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, muscle pain, etc. There is no vaccine, but it can be treated with antibiotics.

I'm not sure what your state bird is, but here in Wisconsin it is the Mosquito.

Last but certainly not least. Super glue, I repeat super glue is not a satisfactory birth control product.

A man had died after using strong glue ‘to seal off his penis’ in a drug-fuelled romp with his girlfriend because they didn’t have a condom.

Salman Mirza, 25, reportedly applied epoxy adhesive to his manhood as a substitute for protection to stop his fiancee from getting pregnant before having sex at a hotel in Gujarat, India.

The couple – both reportedly addicted to drugs – checked into the hotel in the Juhapura neighbourhood of Ahmedabad on June 22 before Mr Mirza was found outside unconscious the following day, police say.

After taking drugs, they decided to use strong glue to “seal off” his private parts during intercourse to avoid pregnancy, according to an unnamed senior Ahmedabad city police officer – who said the pair also mixed whitener with the epoxy to inhale it for a “kick”.

Traditional Stone-Pelting Battle Leaves 77 People Injured in Just 7 Minutes

Every year, hundreds of people from India’s Uttarakhand state engage in Bagwal, a brutal stone-pelting battle that often leaves dozens with severe injuries that require medical attention.

Bagwal literally means “fight with stones”, so it’s a pretty fitting name for a celebration that’s all about hurling big stones at the opposing side. Four clans gather in the Champawat district of Uttarakhand to take part in the unique event, despite the danger of getting seriously injured by the stones flying through the air. In fact, bloody wounds are the whole point of Bagwal as legend has it that the Hindu deity Barahi struck a deal with humans to rid them of demon invaders in exchange for a sacrifice in the form of blood.

Behind the scenes, baseball trading cards are a big business. MLB will end 70-year deal with trading card company Topps (H/T Doof)

Major League Baseball will abandon Topps as its partner for trading cards, ending a relationship that's been in place since 1952.

Fanatics, the company that makes sports apparel, is expected to get the trading card deal instead, according to two people familiar with the matter. Fanatics and MLB declined to comment.

What a mystery, what killed a family and their dog?

‘No One Knows’ How This Entire Family Suddenly Died In Sierra National Forest

There’s something so tragic about people passing away while adventuring. From the backpackers who travelled to Australia and then escaped from the Wolf Creek killer, to Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon who died mysteriously while hiking in Panama, and the tragic story of the “Death Valley Germans” — everything is a little bit more dangerous when you’re in an unfamiliar place. This is true because in some cases, predators look for the most vulnerable people to prey on. Tourists and travelers can be an easy target. For instance, Charles Sobhraj is a French serial killer who lived in South Asia and preyed on European and North American tourists. There are also a lot more dangers inherent to life on the road than life safe at home. “Van life” couples like Lindsay Cutshall and her fiancé Jason Allen and newlyweds Crystal Turner and Kylen Schulte have been killed just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. They simply are in the places where predators also tend to hang out.

In tonight's episode of "You Can't Make This Shit Up", the city of Naples, FL has an issue with itself.

‘Dangerous’ seawalls? Naples sues property owners, turns out, City owns them
Over the last three years, hundreds of thousands of tax dollars were spent by the City of Naples to sue property owners along seawalls they said were in disrepair. As it turns out, the City owned the seawalls all along and they ultimately settled.

It’s all about a question that dates back to roughly 2012, six years before it went to court: Who owns these seawalls along Gulf Shore Boulevard North in Naples?

WINK News Investigative Reporter Sara Girard asked people in the area if they could guess.

“The City,” said Anita Makar, a resident for more than 25 years. She and other visitors and residents said they thought it was obvious.

“Because they are maintaining all of the sidewalks, they’re maintaining the parking lot, they’re maintaining the street all the way to the seawall which gives it a sound foundation to better protect the waterways,” said Naples resident Doug Nykolaycuyk.

This is a "stick up"? Genius Award Winner.

A story on the lighter side of crime.

With guns being extremely hard to come by in Japan, armed robbers here usually resort to large kitchen knives for intimidating store staff into handing over money. But for some reason, some of them apparently can’t even get their hands on one of those and have to get really creative with “weapons” such as nose hair clippers.

Tomoharu Nakamura of Sapporo, Hokkaido, however, may have taken the cake for most absurd robbery weapon. The 41 year-old was arrested on multiple charges in addition to attempted robbery with a lighter.

The incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. on 21 August at a convenience store in Kiyota Ward. Nakamura allegedly entered the store, clicked on his lighter, and pointed it at the manager, saying: “Out with the money or I’ll light you up!”

83 I have never really looked into Lenny Bruce but the fact that I have never heard any funny jokes attributable to him makes me think he may be the Velvet Underground of comedians...sure, by not sounding or acting like the mainstream entertainment of the time and being "edgy" they broke ground and inspired others, but they weren't very good at actually entertaining.

87 About the family that died on their hike. I have been following that story. I want to tell you that about 30 years ago, a similar thing happened. Near a lake, people found dead, a bunch of animals, I do not remember that exactly.
They could not figure it out. Turned out, that carbon dioxide had accumulated in the lake, perhaps from some kind of bacterial metabolism, I forget, and let us say under a dense (cold) layer of water, at the bottom of the lake. Somehow the CO2 accumulated. And then one day the lake sort of burped, and this CO2 was released, and these people/animals, along the lake, suddenly had no oxygen to breath, and they died.
These people on the hike, as far as I can tell, they were not near any bodies of water. So, I guess my story has no relevance. But still, it sounds very similar.

I guess. I can see the doggie and parents drinking from a tainted stream. But they gave it to the baby too? I guess, they thought pure stream water? And they would all drop dead so quickly. Or not have time quickly text something out? Also I think there were signs in the area about the algae.
Also, the thing is, many ways of dying, like carbon monoxide, they yield very distinctive patterns on the dead person (I think very pink lungs on autopsy? I forget). But carbon dioxide. I wonder if it be really hard to diagnose?

Then, no buffet because no one was going to it anymore. Shrugs.

219 OT - but tonight ABC spent a good portion of their national news screaming that COVID variants are taking our children! "Over 300 children were hospitalized in the US just Friday with Covid" wailed some sweaty handed ABC anchor...

Of course over 36,400 people were hospitalized in the US on Friday according to the CDC, of which ~3,000 were children under 12 - in fact nearly 100 children under age 12 died from CHOKING last week alone - probably on the chicken nuggets that their mom, Karen von Gestapo-ass gave them.

ABC breathlessly reports that the CDC says 900 Covid 19 deaths occurred in the US last Friday, but admits that's probably several days worth of data - meaning that Covid 19, or its Delta variant whatever, killed less people last week in the US than having non-skid in our bath tubs...this is all getting way too insanely childish at this point. Some adult has to step in and put a stop the stupidity - like soon.

but you have to delineate who is in charge. You have to state who is the leader. That is the first step in all of this. The one thing Biden, Psaki, et al have been adept at is never really saying who is in charge. Maybe not all people who are in charge are leaders. But if you never say who is, if you never make them accountable, the chance of judging leadership is next to nil.

279 At first, they thought they all may have died from carbon monoxide poisoning, as there a number of abandoned mines in the area. Then, they turned it into a murder investigation, but the autopsies showed no injuries.

Now they are waiting on a pathology report, as they may have gotten water from a toxic algae tainted stream. Remember AtC's words of wisdom -- Outside is always trying to kill you.
Posted by: GnuBreed, no circumstance at August 28, 2021 09:36 PM (F0YaR)

There is no reason that abandoned mines should have carbon monoxide issuing from them. Maybe if you went inside one with a fuel-burning lamp or generator. But some mines might be oxygen-deficient. In which case, if the lack of O2 got you, you'd drop right there, not outside.

Vmom, someone I served with correctly noted that they could indeed withdraw VA medical benefits and retirement benefits from Naval and Naval IC officers if they speak out against or indorse other political parties and/or candidates than the current CIC and chain of command. I don't think that would withstand US SCOTUS scrutiny as that suggests that to serve the US militarily or in the IC is to agree to give up your constitutional rights - but a lot of wounded vets who can't afford counsel might have to think about it, and that is what this is meant to do...

Mardi Gras should be seen, yes. Once is plenty. (I grew up nearly on a parade route and loved it; but I was 8 to 15 years old.) As for the food, it can be prepared anywhere; the seasoning can be ordered online, and there are shops that carry it. 318 Quint - check out a guy named David Paulides, he's a retired detective who was asked to investigate a disappearance in a park some years ago.

There are some jurisdictional issues, as in the FBI, national park rangers, state law enforcement etc. But Paulides found reporting requirements are different in federal land too.

Anyway he started drilling down into just how many people turn up missing on federal land. And then he started finding some really weird stuff. He wrote a book in it, and there are some good You Tube videos out there. Start by searching "National Park Disappearances" and "David Paulides" and that should get you started. As it is often difficult for peoples busy lives to get their schedules to work together I've often said "F it" and went alone, often days at a time, in very remote areas. Never felt weirded out too often. Seen some strange things, but wouldn't trade those times. North America has really stunning landscapes.

Yes of course we're well over the edge in many ways now, a farcical "administration" where the "president" disappears for nearly 2 days at the outbreak of an international crisis, and subsequently only makes brief weird appearances with staged interaction with the "press".

I think SecDef and CJCS have been invisible since the attack? Might have missed something.

Anyway, in this context (no regular flow of KIAs stateside, no ongoing conflict with lots of casualties) to not even have senior DOD or military present seems .... inappropriate.

there is a very old joke about who is buried in Grant's Tomb. If you are over 29, you have heard it. But the joke came about for a reason, it didn't make itself up out of nowhere. My understanding is they planned to bury him but there where long delays, delays that lasted many years. I won't look it up because anyone could do that and try to act like some expert.

I do know many don't like that Grant is buried in a place rarely visited and maybe not the fanciest place in the city. It is odd Lee and Grant have been buried so far apart. At least Lee had a good reason. Today, even the people who chose his college would likely not care if he were there or not.

I still don't fully understand why Grant was buried in New York. I do know every student and visitor should go there to learn something and pay homage.

True, not everyone gets the VIP treatment, especially during OIF/OEF when IEDs were racking up the body count.
But like you said earlier, since that hasn't been the case until a few days ago, the optics of no one from the admin are horrible, but it would have taken someone of amazing intestinal fortitude to return the accusing glares of uniformed personnel at Dover, much less answering very uncomfortable questions from those troops.

460 SMH, exactly what I was getting at. While I saying I didn't know the recent pattern. GnuBreed says Trump was there for many such arrivals.

As with so much these days, I fear the horrendous "optics" of no senior representation present (if true) will only make the rubble bounce. That is - those who know or suspect low capability and character in the idiots now in power will be the only ones who know/care about it, and it will only deepen and confirm their low regard.

Though I think there will be significant (though ultimately unimportant) political hit for them.

472 I recommend Grant's autobiography to those who haven't read it. Well-written with a fair amount of dry humor. All the dude wanted was a free education so he could be a math teacher.

Sample (from memory, not an exact quote):

My father's politician friend told him the West Point appointee could not accept, and offered the appointment to me.

Grant: "I'm not joining the Army."

Grant's father: "Oh, I think you are."

Another one was where he got put in charge of the mules, only to discover that the mules were unbroken and the "teamsters" had no skills whatsoever (why did they lie? Because teamsters got to ride on the wagons instead of humping a pack, of course).

Hilarity ensued.

Flambeing can be done with regular booze like 80 proof rum or Cognac. the key with it is to heat the booze up in a pan, you can do it with the rest of the sauce. It is the combo of booze, heat, and fire. It works every time once you learn the trick. Sure it is a waste of booze, but is an entire other thing.

The penetration of our so-called government by the PRC/CCP is wide and deep.
During a local evening "conservative" talk show the other night, a former military and present "expert" theorized that what is happening now in Afghanistan was predicated on agreements between Joe as VP in 2015 and the Chinese. This present fiasco is Joe's payoff to the Chinese.

Denatured ethanol has about 5% gasoline added to it. Gas forms an azeotrope with ethanol, just like 5% water does. This means that you cannot distill away 'the bad stuff'. The gasoline components become permanent parts of the admixture, and cannot be separated by regular distillation.

Thus, by normal means, you cannot purify ethanol to drinkable levels of purity once gasoline has been added to it.

In one phase of my squandered youth, I worked for a Hi-Fi shop. One of our products, which we bottled ourselves, was 'Professional Tape Head Cleaner'. This was contained in a very nice 4 oz. pharmaceutical bottle, which bore a very well produced label. The liquid was a pale green.

The label was something you do not see anymore, in that the back of the label could be read through the bottle. Thereon was printed the ingredients, 'Contains denatured alcohol and GFC'. The GFC? Green food coloring.

Well, Pug, not AT ALL in the sense you're talking about, which is correct (the incessant propaganda everywhere one turns), but ........

Though we don't understand it, there's little doubt that, in fact, the weather (actually the season) DOES have a huge amount to do with propagation of influenza-like illnesses. A British scientist named Hope-Simpson spent his life in the 20th Century documenting the patterns, which turned out to be strongly and reliable seasonal, and geographic. His major work on it is a free online book.

Hope-Simpson himself would marvel, probably not even believe, what he would've seen since March 2020. All of the established wisdom, observational and empirically tested actual science on the topic just thrown out, from lockdowns to masks.

Yes, but it has less heat in it, and it burns really sooty.

If you want to save the everclear for drinking either get marine stove alcohol (denatured and it was about $5 a gal last time I saw it) or those gas treatments like Heet that are methyl alcohol (don't drink or wash in it)

Likely a dumb question, so what's to stop one from cutting the Denatured to a 50/50 water mix, throwing it all in the still, and let the process run?

Might have to repeat that process a time or three, but I'd imagine in the end, the poisons would be all gone out the relief valve, with nothing but pure liquor (or close enough to it) coming out the worm?

Because the alcohol and the denaturant form an azeotrope, which is a molecular bond that won't break upon distillation. Water does the same thing with alcohol, too. You cannot exceed 95% pure grain alcohol by distilling alone.

Look into Sunbeam phones, if you're inclined. Flip phone, neither iOS nor Android. Does voice and text. Clumsier texting than a smartphone, but that's how it goes. Three models, higher-end includes navigation (like a Garmin or TomTom; all the maps are stored on the device and don't sync to the mothership). Higher models have the crappy 2007-era camera you remember. None of them can browse the web (so no HQ) or do email. OS is written in-house, not farmed out to China like KaiOS on most carriers' flip-phones. Made for sale to the Mennonite market, like Amish only they will drive or use phones so long as it is within the bounds of their doctrine (don't let it take over your life, I imagine). I've had one since the beginning of the month and as long as you realize it'll never be a smartphone, it's pretty easy to get along with.

565 One way you might be able to purify denatured alcohol would be to add the alcohol to a container with both water and light mineral oil (white petrolatum) in it. The denaturants ought to be more soluble in the oil than in the water, while the alcohol would mix perfectly with the water.

I would not want to drink any alcohol that was treated this way, though, without careful testing for any denaturants that might remain.

Nokia's still making flip phones, but they're loaded with whatsapp and browsers and all the other shit their market wants, just on a tiny screen with a lousy interface. They're also running Android or KaiOS. Some of the Kyocera stuff looks nice - jobsite-grade sturdy, and you can operate it with work gloves - but it's KaiOS too, so it has their app store and little games and all that. I ended up getting a phone that's made for a market that doesn't want distractions, so: Amish-ish. There are similar phones marketed to Hasidic Jews too, but my Yiddish is for shit.

I first researched home-brew lubricants after I'd been using the wax for a while. But then I noticed that ...... properly used, the wax looked like it would last another 10 years. Just touch one finger to it about every third or fourth case for 9mm or 30 carbine (more often for 30-06).

I'll repeat in the gun thread tomorrow if I'm around, but on-topic reloading, got delivery of 2 lbs of H110 today. Easily 75% above "normal" price - but it's the only one I'm low on, and the boss loves her the M1 carbine (as do I), so, need to feed it. Bought directly from Hodgdon. As I haven't bought ammo in many years, or components in several, the sting is moderate.

594 Likely a dumb question, so what's to stop one from cutting the Denatured to a 50/50 water mix, throwing it all in the still, and let the process run?

Might have to repeat that process a time or three, but I'd imagine in the end, the poisons would be all gone out the relief valve, with nothing but pure liquor (or close enough to it) coming out the worm?

Inquiring minds, and etc.

Jim

Because azeotropes form their own unique boiling point. So distillation 'cutoff points', based on bp values, won't work to segregate. You can cheat, of course, by varying the pressures or running that shit thru certain selective absorption filters, but that costs and takes a bit of tech knowhow.

Yep. There is a 195 (97.5% ethanol) proof 'everclear' for sale on the internet, based on vacuum distillation. You've varied the pressure for the azeotrope boiling point, allowing for less water in the distillate.

You can make 100% ethanol, but it usually made by synthesis involving no water molecules present in the process. No water present, no azeotrope.

Removed the front axle, engine, and transaxle from a '61 VW floorpan I had sitting around, and flopped the denuded pan up onto a large work table in order to cut 14.5 inches out of it. Just for the Hell of it, I started up the 40-horse 1200 engine. Had to repair a burned-out ground braid in the distributor, first. It ran for half a minute or so, with a periodic dry bearing screech coming from the transmission or clutch area. I wasn't planning on using that transmission, anyway. I have better ones on hand.

Thanks. Now, suppose we take that mixture, on the right side of the azeotrope mixture, bring it back to 1 atm, or even higher (lower the azeotrope ratio?) and then start distilling that. Wouldn't we now be boiling off more water than ethanol, and thus leave the "bottoms" with more ethanal content?

I imagine something would mess that up, maybe moisture in ambient atmosphere coming in and fucking everything up?

631 AOP - a while back, I asked you about advice for jittery power windows on my 2006 Highlander. Both passenger side windows are doing a thing where they only move a little bit each time when I try to lower or raise them. I have to wait a while, then try again - then the window will move some random distance up or down. Usually ranges from 1/4 inch to 2 inches each time. It can take 5 mins to raise a window - and it takes several instances of trial and error. Even when they don't move, you can hear a light click where the motor is. Like it's trying to engage. Driver's side windows lower and raise with no problems.

Based on your suggestion and YouTube vids, I tried spraying silicon lubricant generously into the side tracks for each window. Made no difference. Any other thoughts??

Ethanol and water have a lot of the same affinities to adsorption columns, but yes, that is one approach to 'dehydrating' ethanol.

Incidentally, this is one reason that separating out rare earth element ores is so tough. The various elements are chemically quite similar, so you need to rely on esoteric differences to isolate the pure elements. They aren't all that rare, but hard to purify.

Well, the body I have is a Manx clone, I think. Doubt it's the real thing. But it looks the part. I have a 1970 transmission that I plan to use. A 1600 engine will fit that. The older six volt engines had a slightly smaller flywheel ring gear, and the I.D. of the bellhousing was a hair smaller. The ring gear of a 12-volt 1600 engine won't fit in it. I have seen people start the 1600, and then slowly push it into the older bellhousing, and let the ring gear teeth mill away a few thou of magnesium alloy. It's that close. But using the later transaxle obviates the necessity of doing that.

I figured I would use the old 40 horse engine for a while. I do have a 1600 dual-port. Swapping engines is easy.

Well, it could still be some torque-limiting device, (intended to prevent the window closing on a child's neck firmly enough to choke it). If the device itself has shifted calibration, or if drag in the system exceeds its setting, you could have that.

Got any Pick and Pulls in your area? For about $25, you could get a used motor. And there are probably EweToob vids that will show you how to re and re a window motor. They can be tricky, but at least you can mostly work from a sitting position. Carry a folding chair with you!

Before I hit the sack, I want to reiterate what that paper about I linked to is showing: "Vaccinating" the mass population with a non-sterilzing (leaky) vaccine during an epidemic, not to mention a global pandemic is a weapons grade stupid thing to do.

It drives the virus to escape the single epitope spike immunity these inferior vaccines confer. It's child play for the virus to mutate around this. Luckily, natural immunity does not depend on this single spike epitope. The virus is nowhere near escaping natural immunity. Your immune system know far better how to do it than Pharma and the Top. Men.

But just as Vanden Bossche warned over 6 months ago, you are actually thwarting "herd immunity", which the human immune system at the population level is getting us to. The mass vaccination program has thwarted that. Stop this foolishness right now, and we'll be out of it soon (albeit with more deaths than we otherwise would've had to take).

Keep this shit up with reformulated boosters and all that, and we're just going to keep making it worse.

I tried to type 'courses', but curses seems so much better.

Curses it be.

657 Summer lasts from March to December. January or February are the only tolerable months, and they can have warm spells too.

I hate to admit it, but you belong in the North. I lived there 18 years, and heah in the deep South about the same.

To me, there are only 3 bad months for heat here -- June-August. Whereas in Shitcagoland, there are 6 months of winter. Oct-March blows Democrat dick. April ain't that much better. Fuck that noise.

Gimme 3 months of sweating.

If it were only 3 months here --! Personally I think I want something in the West, but at a higher elevation, so it's not only drier but there are 4 seasons.

658 Mornin', all,

It's raining lightly here. The storm is a cat 4 and is expected to hit land around lunchtime. Of course the winds will be howling ahead of that for a while. I'm having a little breakfast and will shower, etc., as I may not be able to later. Then I'll pack my bag, or get it started, for the bugout on Monday, as it looks like I'll need to.

I probably should have reserved the Birmingham room for longer, and then canceled if I didn't need it. It's possible 2 days may not be enough. . . .

661 Taking a break from the endless coverage of the storm, and watching an episode of The Invaders from '67 or '68. The guest star is Joanne Linville, the famous Romulan Commander from "Enterprise Incident."

662 Welp, Hurricane Ida is now a Cat 3, winds 115 mph, pressure 955 mb (bad), still tracking west of Nawlins, which is about to be fucked over big time.

Still expected to hit Cat 4 by landfall. The best way to run is northwest imho, using backroads only. I-10 and I-12 are parking lots.

If you try to go NW, you'd be driving into and across the width of the storm.

663 Tried to call the B'ham hotel just now. Got somebody who sounded drunk or high who told me to call back after 9 am when the manager would be in. What do they have answering the phone, the janitor?
