Daily Tech News 24 August 2021

Top Story

  • Now that I've got that raise and can look at buying nice new PC it seems that video card prices are heading back up. I'm tempted to say fuck it and just get a 3090 so I don't have to worry about it for five years.

On the other hand, the 4TB Seagate Firecuda 530 is in stock locally, so I can quit pricing RAID configurations of WD Blue SN550s. Which - well, see below.

  • Over 1000 apps built with Microsoft's Power Apps tool have been busy leaking private data. (Thurrott.com)

Including minor things like job application forms, employee databases, and Bat Flu contact tracing apps, for everyone from Ford and American Airlines to the New York public school system.

Because someone forgot to tick a box to keep the data private.

    Oops.

Tech News

  • Trust no-one: Western Digital appears to have silently swapped the flash chips used in their popular Blue SN550 SSDs. (Tom's Hardware)

There's just one site reporting the benchmark data and I'll post an update if more news comes in either way, but it looks like the new version suffers from read speeds as much as 50% lower than the original once you fill the 12GB SLC cache.

  • In stark contrast to the GPU situation, AMD CPUs are now selling below MSRP. (WCCFTech)

Only 10% below MSRP, but a deal is a deal.

  • IBM's new Z-series mainframe CPU is a big chip with a lot of stuff. (Serve the Home)

Short on sleep and my eyes kind of glazed over reading the details, but the gist is that this is an 8 core chip with a base clock of over 5GHz (server CPUs usually run much slower than that) supporting up to 32 CPU chips in a single system.

An interesting design trick is that there is no L3 cache - as you would find on most chips - nor the L4 cache on previous IBM mainframes. Instead, each individual core has a huge 32MB L2 cache. (AMD's current CPUs by comparison share 32MB of L3 cache across 8 cores.)

And that 256MB of total L2 cache across the 8 cores per chip act as a virtual L3 cache. On an 8-socket system that scales out to 2GB of virtual L4 cache.

Since Someone Asked

  • Hololive debuted six new talents in their English branch yesterday, after delaying it for a day due to one of their PCs triggering its self-destruct just hours before launch. This was a minor surprise because they had only announced five.

The sixth announcement was buried in a video played during the last of the debut streams.

Two of the five talents who have streamed so far are Australian.

    Very, very Australian.

I haven't heard that flavour of the Aussie accent in twenty years. Where did they find her?

  • VOMS (home of Pikamee and Tomoshika) is preparing to launch their second generation next month.

  • PRISM Project (home of Pina Pengin and Araka Luto, another Aussie) just announced auditions for their Gen 4.

  • Cyberlive (home of Kaneko Lumi) just announced auditions for Gen 2.

  • Nijisanji is already holding auditions for Wave 3 and Wave 4 of female English-language talents, and the first wave of male talents as well. They have huge branches in Japan, Korea, and Indonesia, but their English-language push is new after their earlier attempts in India failed to gain traction.

  • What I call VMN - a loose affiliation of indies started by Indonesian artist and streamer Vyolfers - continues to grow, with three new talents joining their Minecraft server today.

Is it a bubble? Maybe. Hololive is the big fish in the pond and they've been playing it cool, and haven't added any new talents in Japan so far this year (and likely won't, given their lead time between audition and debut).

But Hololive's smallest and newest channels, subject to a YouTube shadowban and after having their subscribers deleted at least three times, still all have over 150,000 subscribers in the first 48 hours.

Wait, where's Omega's channel... Right, the sixth ranger of HoloEN Gen 2 only has 66,000 subscribers, but they weren't publicised, haven't streamed yet, and are still shadowbanned. Took me a couple of minutes just to find their channel to check the subs count, but that means 66,000 other people did that as well.

Disclaimer: Do not seek to ask for whom the VTuber streams, or Pixy might tell you.

2 Good morning morons.

I've awakened to the news that perverted Democrat hack Cuomo, in his last official act, gas freed the terrorist father of San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin from his 75-year sentence.

Why?

Because Democrats think their terrorism should be legal.

36 Just pulled the trigger on home network hardware upgrade.

New cable modem with a 2.3gb and a 1.5gb ethernet port, and two asus wifi routers to split the house into two subnets. I ran the cat 6e cables last year so every bedroom has a wired cat6 drop for roku streaming as well as the office for hardwired work. The routers each have 8 ethernet ports so that'll handle the two subnets nicely. The wifi are dual band so i dont have to upgrade my older tablet and all the cell phones in the family will stay off the mobile data plan everywhere in the house and outside on the property.

But I give those guys a lot of credit. At some point you need to do something and obviously they did. Why the name matters I am not sure. I recall the same name from the great film Glen Garry Glenn Ross.

But i am not Indian, I dont' get the totality of things that have nothing to do with me. But since we we are mentioning surnames, that one is a big one in this country.

Sounds cool, junior-ette has been whining about wifi service in her bedroom at the far end of the house, so that's what prompted me to start the planning. I waited until winter to run the cabkes so I wouldn't melt in the atic. Fishing the teunk line from the crawls space through the first and second floors was a little harder than i expected, but still doable. Plus i ran a conduit so i could isolate the cat 6e trunk from the power lines adjace t to it. Had to ground the conduit to ensure no emi leakage would affect data throuhput though.

This has really been a toy problem for me to mess with more than anything else.

Last project will be an arduino/pie mashup that runs the sprinkler system based off the rain gauge and soil moisture readings. Just something to do.

My first PC was one of the Compaq's suit cases. I had to have it though I had exactly zero idea why I needed it and even worse, zero experience with computers. So I went Sears, signed for it and Lotus 123, went home turned it on and saw a blinking green cursor glaring angerly at me. I broke out in hives and realized I just blew $3000 in 1980s money to be glared at. It went back the next day. And just like that is how my career with computers got started. Strange is so correcto.

I think this is why RTS games are dying out. You can invest over 120 hours a week in a game for months, and lose everything you built because you were offline for a few hours. We saw several players ragequit and never come back. I can't really blame them. Even the teams that won had high turnover because of burnout. So not a good game model.

I like Brave and Edge Dev (this is a Microsoft beta version that regularly gets updates without being whacky). They are both based on the same code base as Google Chrome but without the Google stink. Value proposition of both as I see it...Brave is by far the one that protects your privacy at the expense of convivence features. Edge captures substantial metrics but you get some very nice features and less issues with certain web sites. Both are good at syncing favorites/bookmarks across devices including cell phones. I like the both.

Other peeps swear by Firefox and Opera. I personally do not like the Opera interface and Firefox I have lost touch with.

Maybe so, but in the end it probably wouldn't change anything, just like those rifles won't change anything for the Taliban. That country is awash in small arms. They've got more triggers than people to pull the triggers.

And the M4 is a bit finicky about cleaning. They'll probably end up being sold off to other countries in favor of AKs, which still work okay even if you mistreat them.

i WENT with firefox years ago, probably four years or so. i also use the Duck Duck Go browser. I am not the brightest bulb, but i know I am giving up a bit. I know google is a better search engine, but the trade off is worth it to me. Duck has improved by leaps and bounds over the years, and I am happy to have gone along for the ride.

I know many don't like Firefox for some reason. But I switched on a dime years ago and never looked back. At least i don't owe anything to Alphabet.

I'd suggest brave, but be sure to immediately go to "settings" and click "search engine" to choose something besides google.

I know google is so accepted that it's the accepted term for searching for something online, but one would think a browser that claims to want to protect your privacy would not have that search engine as the default.

(also disable WebRTC if you're running a VPN)

You are making a good distinction here - the browser and the search engine. These are independent choices. I experimented with Google, Bing, and Duck Duck Go. All give you roughly the same results, for the most part the differences are not that different. People are locked into Google out out shear habit. The closest are Google and Bing both in results and result formatting features. Duck Duck Go is a much plainer result set but it claims not track your searches; from what I can tell I believe them.

I use as few Google products as possible - they are rotten to the core. The one thing I can't let go of is maps.

Being a former blue badge, I drank the kool aid, Bing is pretty nice product and I like using it for specific reasons. With that said Duck Duck Go does a good job. Start with these.
